This year marks our 13th year of the free public tour which showcases the wonderful art of Gorge artists and provides an insight into the environment in which art is created. GORGE ARTISTS This year, we’ve numbered our tour starting at the “TOP”! Consider starting at our northern-most studio in Trout Lake q and then travel south, through BZ Corners w to White Salmon and other Washington studios e-1). Then work your way to our eastern-most studio on the Oregon side in The Dalles 1!-1^ and continue west through Mosier 1&1*. After reaching Hood River, travel all the way to our southern-most studio 1(-2^ and enjoy some spectacular views of Mt Hood (weather permitting) along the way. Wander north through the downtown Hood River studios 2&-4& and wrap up your visit by traveling to our western-most studio in Cascade Locks 4*.

I started painting twelve years ago. I was raised in the forest and on occasion I have made the mistake of leaving. I am now firmly planted here where I paint the plants and animals that surround me. My work is available at Art On Oak in Hood River. Directions: Drive through White Salmon on the main street that runs through town (Jewett). Stay on that street which will turn into HWY 141 and just keep driving... and driving for 11 miles. When you get to BZ Corner, drive past The Logs a little ways and you will see the BZ Corner Launch Point on your right. I am located across Highway 141 from the launch point.

From my log cabin in the woods, I draw inspiration from the nature around me. The materials I carve are of the earth and sea, as are the totems and jewelry I make from fossil walrus, mammoth, and corals.

I will showcase and discuss the process behind my one-of-a-kind creations in paint & clay and my renowned paintings of pomegranates. Overlooking 3 Mile Lagoon, my two-level studio provides river views and a close up look at The Pit, an earthen hole filled with wood shavings and bisque ware, then set on fire, covered with metal sheeting and left to burn three to five days. Life demanded my full attention: I continued to notice the beauty that is light, line, and color around me. Those images are yearning to be set free. A strong printmaking history translates well to multilayered glass where light plays in the spaces.

I started in the 1980’s with free handing my art on clothing. I had before created a clothing line with knits and lace, dying my custom colors. Adding my drawings, I made the byrkitwear line. I paint primarily wet-in-wet, as I love the look of transparent watercolor. I do my own matting and framing, but also mount some of my paintings on birch panels (no mats or frame). I live in the forest zone, off grid. I am continuously inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds me. I paint “scenes” that span the visual scope and find beauty in everything from cloud formations to landscapes to forest mist, foliage, fruits, flowers, birds, and butterflies. I am a member of the local artist co-op, 301 Gallery, downtown Hood River. Directions: Take I-84 Exit 64 and turn south to Hwy 35. Continue on Hwy 35 about 17 miles.
