Brad Price: “The Spirit of Place” “When I paint, I am transported back to a place where I have been. I am there again and through my work, I invite others to be there with me and enjoy the spirit of that place.” Brad Price’s solo exhibition, “The Spirit of Place” features a new body of southwestern landscapes that convey the artist’s spiritual and emotional connection to the land, particularly his favorite locations and landmarks in Northern New Mexico. The Oklahoma artist is drawn to the culture of the southwest, and returns to the area each year to photograph and make sketches in Taos, Abiquiu, Santa Fe and more, which he then translates into expressive paintings back in his home studio. Price’s signature pieces for this year’s solo show are larger than the artist’s typical canvas, with each one measuring 36” x 48”. Titled “Cuymungue Vista” and “Nambe Winter,” they are both light-filled snowy scenes along the High Road to Taos that have been imprinted in the artist’s memory. Their shared winter color palette and visual presence easily make them the focal point of Price’s show, drawing the viewer in and setting the mood for the exhibition. Additional works in the show depict some of Price’s favorite places to paint, including scenes from the Chama wilderness, Taos Pueblo, Ghost Ranch and more. Price also explores portraiture in his close up view of Georgia O’Keeffe, as he likes to pay homage to New Mexico’s cultural icons. Read Price’s descriptions of several pieces in the show below, and learn what inspiration and importance the subject matter holds for him.

“This little painting is called “Tesuque Hoodoo.” It is better known as Camel Rock and is a fixture on the highway north out of Santa Fe. It’s been on many postcards about New Mexico and has a kind of “tourist postcard” reputation. I don’t recall seeing another painter paint it, I think because they think it’s too touristy. So I thought I’d give it a shout out in my show.”

“There was an old adobe building that I had seen other artists paint. I searched for it for several years without finding it. This year I realized that this eroded adobe next to the little church in Ojo Sarco, is the adobe I had been looking for. The roof is gone, but finally I get to paint it.”

“This painting of Ranchos de Taos is made through the front gate of the wall that surrounds the church. I love the way the opening frames it and casts a long shadow on the pathway.”

“The Chama wilderness, where the Chama River flows down from the monastery, is a beautiful place. The afternoon sun was backlighting a grove of cottonwoods on the flats of the valley just west of the river. There is a bridge that crosses the Chama at that point.”
Fall at Taos Morada oil

“This painting is once again a return to the Morada in Taos on Penitent Road. It is one of my favorite buildings in New Mexico. It’s set against Pueblo peak and is a magical place. The Spirit of this place is amazing. When I’m standing next to the building looking at the view, I can almost feel the air vibrate.”
Kitchen Mesa Chamisa oil

“This painting of Kitchen Mesa with the chamisa in the foreground is one of my favorite places. I have hiked up into the canyon at Ghost Ranch many times. One year, I hiked into the canyon and stayed until I watched the moon rise over Pedernal Peak.”
