For her 2021 solo show at Meyer Gallery, Natalie Featherston presents a new body of work that is a continuation of the artist’s clever realism and whimsical subject matter. FAUX SHO: Trompe L’Oeil Double Visions opens on Friday, October 22nd with an opening reception at the gallery from 5-7pm. “For my show this year, I decided to do pairs of trompe l’oeil paintings inspired by the same idea: double visions,” states Featherston. “I explore this idea of double visions through my favorite trompe l’oeil series: Young Artist Shows Promise crayon drawings, ‘box’ paintings, back of the canvas pieces, comics, and boxes with broken glass.” These themes have been mainstays and collector favorites for the Rhode Island artist, who begins planning her exhibitions nearly a year in advance with scribbled notes, thumbnail sketches, and song lyrics on inspiration boards in the studio. “Once I have a title in mind to unify ideas, a theme gradually emerges for the body of work,” she says. “It’s not unusual for me to see several ways of composing a piece germinating from a single idea— this year I thought it would be fun to show two ways of popping the same kernel of inspiration.” Featherston’s show consists of painting pairs in which the viewer can see the artist’s ideas evolve. In her “Young Artist Shows Promise” paintings, the same young female character dreams of a magical tea party with dinosaurs in one scene, and an enchanted garden party in the other. Featherston’s paired comic paintings are similar in style, composition, and satire, yet allow the artist to expand her witty narrative in different ways. These “double visions” create an exhibition and visual experience that showcases the creative voice and signature themes that Featherston’s collectors know and love. Featherston has received numerous awards for her paintings; most recently, she received the Best Trompe L’oeil Award in the 15th International Art Renewal Center Salon competition for her painting “Nesting Instinct.” She also received the Award of Excellence in the National Online Juried Show by American Women Artists for her piece, “The Truth is Out There.” Her work has appeared in publications such as The Artist’s Magazine, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, the Santa Fean Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, the Chicago Sun Times, Hyperallergic, and others. Her work is in private and public collections worldwide including that of Toni Morrison, Danielle Steele, J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, and Alice Cooper. She currently lives and works in Rhode Island.
