For his solo exhibition, Déjà vu, William Hook presents a collection of new representational southwest paintings alongside his latest modern abstracts. His inspired landscapes include sunsets over the Sandias, red rock cliffs in Chama, aspen groves, and more New Mexico scenes. His increasingly organic abstract paintings are built from a similar color palette, giving the exhibition an enticing local feel. Hook has spent the majority of his career splitting time between Carmel and Santa Fe, allowing the two locations as well as international travel to inform his subject matter. His southwest emphasis for this show may stem from the artist’s recent decision to move to New Mexico full time, as Hook and his wife decide to leave their California residence and call the Land of Enchantment their permanent home. In addition to his new southwest work, Hook is revisiting past pieces for Déjà vu that were created and sold earlier in the artist’s career yet have made their way back into his studio and current collection. Hook brings these pieces into the present by making slight changes to their composition, lighting or color palette. The resulting paintings become unique encapsulations of the artist’s career from past to present. “It’s this idea that people may feel like they’ve seen the work before, but that they’re also experiencing it for the first time,” says Hook of these revisited paintings. A similar sentiment can be felt when viewing Hook’s New Mexico landscapes; familiar local imagery such as a hollyhock flower or Ghost Ranch mesa feels inspired and new when seen through the artist’s eyes. Hook’s precise yet expressive painting style features broad brushstrokes, vivid color and subtle lighting effects, as the artist aims to capture his own sense of wonder and emotional connection with his subject matter. Déjà vu opens with a reception on Friday, August 6 th from 5-7pm. New work can be seen in person at the gallery and online at meyergalleries.com/show/meyer-gallery-william-hook.
