For her 2022 solo exhibition, Avifauna – A World Within, Jhenna Quinn Lewis presents a new series of paintings that reflect the beautiful interdependency between humans, flora, and fauna, rendered in a Japanese-inspired aesthetic. Her paintings move the viewer to acknowledge and appreciate our place in nature, while inspiring us to do our part in protecting it. Lewis’ subject matter is still dedicated to songbirds in still life, however, for this exhibition, she also presents each of those subjects individually with quiet still scenes focused around a single piece of fruit, or a detailed image of a bird against solid or patterned backdrops. Lewis brings more focus to her singular subject as it fills the canvas, asking us to pause and consider its beauty and presence. Subtle symbols represent the subject’s connection with nature; Garden’s Gift, for example, shows a single stemmed pear with two green leaves as if it were just harvested from a tree. It sits on a red surface that is patterned with butterflies – representing the insect that assist with orange tree pollination to produce this “garden gift.” Still I Wait depicts a Golden-crowned Sparrow who carries a jeweled earring in its beak, a memento from a human environment. The background design is a soft image of morning glories that vine down to frame the avian subject, who sits on floral painted surface. This whimsical scene is, according to the artist, “a representation of how our worlds are connected.” Other pieces in the show inspire us to take an even closer look into the natural world with an insect series titled Bug Collection, featuring smaller, hyper-detailed paintings of beetles and butterflies.
Across the exhibition is the artist’s commitment to a minimalist aesthetic that evokes an “eloquent silence,” as Lewis describes it. “I think my paintings have a spirit of simplicity,” she says. “I think people are taken by them because of their reflective quality that is meditative and calming.”
