Milt Kobayashi’s solo exhibition features an intimate collection of new figurative paintings by the New York artist, who continues to explore his distinct modern aesthetic while remaining rooted in realism. Kobayashi’s latest work consists of gestural paintings with singular female figures that fill the canvas, surrounded by abstract color fields or bold patterns. His attractively aloof figures have a casual presence, glancing quietly toward the viewer as if catching our eye in a crowded room. The intrigue draws us closer while cultivating an emotional connection. “What I want to do with my paintings is bring people in,” says Kobayashi. “I want you to stick your nose in and get personal with it.” Kobayashi’s current work is a continuation of his recent exploration with thematic elements – such as his whimsical strawberry paintings – and bolder, more saturated color. “My palette is typically a secondary palette,” the artist explains, “I use purples, greens, orange – muted colors. Very rarely do I paint with a primary palette of red, yellow and blue. When I recently decided to do red paintings, the strawberry theme came naturally from that.” Kobayashi’s unexpected use of color has always set his work apart, and continues to reflect his expressive and explorative style in his most recent paintings. Born in New York City, Kobayashi is a third-generation Japanese-American who lived with his family in Oahu, Hawaii and Los Angeles, California, where he spent many years working as an illustrator before returning to New York in the late 1970s. Here, he was strongly influenced by museum visits to the Met and other New York institutions and ultimately shifted his career from illustration to painting. Ironically, it was his fascination with artists such as Velasquez and Whistler that lead him to discover Japanese art, specifically print masters of the 16 th and 17 th century. Now, his work reflects a distinct combination of both Western and Eastern techniques.
