For his 2022 Solo Exhibition, Robert LaDuke presents a new series of paintings that are a continuation of his nostalgic illustrative style, with imaginative landscapes and open-ended narratives. Imagined Memories opens on September 23rd with an Open ing Reception from 5-7pm. New work can also be seen online at meyergalleries.com.

“Every painting has partial elements based on reality, memories, and a healthy dose of imagination,” says LaDuke of his latest work, which is heavily influenced by New Mex ico and scenes from the southwest. “I’m trying to capture the magic that is New Mexi co; the state just fascinates me.”

Adobe, for example, is a roadside view of a Santa Fe home at dusk with classic adobe architecture and a blue door. Parked in front is a vintage truck, as LaDuke continues his interest in painting 1930s, 40s, and 50s-era transportation. Other roadside pieces with similar compositions include Tuesday, featuring a 1950s diner with a classic car, and Deco, depicting a yellow art deco home with a green Corvette zooming by.

This exhibition will also include rarely seen interior views of the buildings and houses that are featured in LaDuke’s paintings. “There’s something about seeing just a tiny bit of interior that satisfies the voyeur in me,” he says.

For Imagined Memories, LaDuke continues to blend imagery from his dreams, past experiences and real environments. As a result, idyllic depictions of American culture and westward travel are nostalgic and familiar, yet often surreal and unpredictable. The artist lives and works in Huntington Beach, California; he attended the School of Art Institute of Chicago and has been painting and exhibiting his work professionally for over 20 years.
