The theme for the 7th Edition of Bangladesh Denim Expo was TRANSPARENCY, and through product displays, presentation of information and a series of seminars and group discussion sessions the Expo highlighted the benefits to be gained by adopting transparent business practices and the duty that befalls us in the denim industry (whether it be suppliers, manufacturers or buyers) to promote these initiatives for the welfare of the workforces and the environment.

In line with the TRANSPARENCY theme for the 7th Edition of Bangladesh Denim Expo, it was our privilege to highlight the advances that have been made within the Bangladeshi RMG industry over the last 4 years to achieve more transparent business practices. Highlighted in our seminar sessions and displays were a number of key improvements made within the RMG industry, including:

IMPROVING WORKER / MANAGEMENT RELATIONS: • • • • •

LABOUR LAW WAS AMENDED IN 2013 AND LABOUR RULES PROMULGATED IN 2015 MAKING THESE MORE FAVORABLE FOR WORKERS. • ELECTED WORKERS PARTICIPATION COMMITTEE AND SAFETY COMMITTEE ARE MANDATORY. • THE AMENDED LABOUR LAW SPECIFIES HOW SUCH COMMITTEES SHOULD BE FORMED AND FUNCTIONS. • THE LABOUR LAW ALSO STIPULATES COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGENT AND ITS ROLE. MINIMUM WAGES INCREASED BY 223% SINCE 2010. WORKERS WELFARE FUND CREATED BY THE GOVERNMENT (US $10 MILLION FROM RMG). BANGLADESH GOVERNMENT UPGRADING FACTORY INSPECTION AND MONITORY CAPACITY. GOVERNMENT OF BANGLADESH HAS RECENTLY FORMED THE TRIPARTITE CONSULTATIVE COUNCIL (TCC) FOR THE RMG SECTOR TO ADDRESS LABOUR AND WORKPLACE RELATED ISSUES IN RMG SECTOR. A SUBSTANTIAL STEP TOWARDS FORMING A COLLABORATIVE AND ALL INCLUSIVE ENTITY TO DEAL WITH ALL UNRESOLVED OR DISPUTED ISSUES. BGMEA DEVELOPING CENTRAL DATABASE FOR WORKERS OF ITS MEMBER FACTORIES WHICH WILL BE REQUIRED TO ASCERTAIN WORKERS ELIGIBLE FOR THE WELFARE. 2 FESTIVAL BONUSES EVERY YEAR MADE MANDATORY.

GOVERNMENT APPOINTED 45 LOCAL ENGINEERING FIRMS TO SUPPORT THE FACTORIES ON CAP DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTATION. 6 DIFE ENGINEERS ARE DEDICATEDLY MONITORING REMEDIATION ACTIVITIES. Bangladesh Denim Expo was proud to display a trend zone area, offering a snapshot of product being shown by exhibitors at the event. A range of product covering the latest in developments for fabrics, finishes and styling were displayed, with a focus on transparent and sustainable techniques, echoing the theme of the 7th Edition. Visitors were able to gain a valuable insight into the vast variety of product being displayed at the Expo and appreciate both upcoming trends and the potential capabilities available within Bangladesh, plus the advances that had been made in fiber developments, dyestuffs and finishing processes to achieve greater sustainability in the denim industry.

THE MAKING OF THE VR VIDEO
I
(from fiber to a finished pair of jeans) without having to leave the Expo ground. It was a daunting task to make the video as it was a totally new concept for Bangladesh, and most of the equipment required to produce the perfect VR experience was difficult to find. But, as the saying goes, where there is a will there is a way, and with great effort and expertise we were able to take visitors on a virtual tour of denim mills, factories and laundries – the experience of which was very well received!

We came to think how best to present the advances made within the Bangladesh apparel industry towards achieving greater transparency, and how to promote the achievements, and educate an d i n sp i re t h e vis ito rs to th e Ex po by highlighting all aspects of transparency within the denim industry. We chose to produce a 360° Virtual Reality (VR) Tour, focusing on transparent initiatives – a first for such a venture in Bangladesh! The objective behind making the VR was to show to the visitors the transparent practices of our denim mills, factories and laundry facilities

For each edition of Bangladesh Denim Expo there is a theme focusing on various aspects of sustainability. For the 7th Edition, we decided to highlight the issue of supply chain transparency, because, without transparency, the cause of sustainability cannot be promoted and understood. Thus, the theme for the 7th Edition of the Expo was TRANSPARENCY, with a focus on promoting sustainable and socially conscious work practices and improving the opacity of the whole supply chain.
The process took nearly six months for a team of 15 people to complete the necessary tasks, from initial concept development, through to procuring the necessary equipment and undergoing the rigorous post-production processes. The story behind the making of the VR footage would be incomplete if we did not mention two names – Ananta Group and Square Denim. The VR video was shot at these two factories. The team of Bangladesh Denim Expo visited the two factories numerous times and were always warmly welcomed by the factory authorities who offered their unconditional support during the shooting of the VR footage, and extended that support during the post production activities providing information for the writing of the script, and working many late hours – This dedication and support was truly inspirational, and reflected the genuine feelings felt for the country by those involved. We thank you all! At the end of the process the opening day of the Expo was upon us, and we set up a hand-built VR booth at the Expo ground. The overwhelming interest and positive feedback of the visitors regarding the VR made all our efforts worthwhile, and we look forward to the next challenge!

For the evening of 8 th November PACIFIC JEANS, the largest premium level jeans wear manufacturer in Bangladesh, hosted a Denim Innovation Night, organized by Bangladesh Denim Expo. The evening featured a pulsating fashion extravaganza, showcasing a spectacular display of denim product, finished using the latest in sustainable laundry techniques and showing the depth of creativity available within Bangladesh for the global market.

I personally feel that Bangladesh Denim Expo is a good platform for sourcing of denims because most of the suppliers and merchandisers are based in Dhaka. They have very limited scope to travel and gain knowledge of fashion trends that are going on in the market. So I think this is a good platform to gather the knowledge about the future fashion trends. 39

The expo has contribution to the development of Bangladesh apparel industry by promoting the country internationally. Many exhibitors from China, Pakistan, Italy and from all over the world come to this expo. It is a good way to understand how this country is growing.

This is Aycan Gumus, Head of Washing at Epic Group. We are working in many countries. Bangladesh is our flagship country for denim and non-denim production and we have six plants here. We are proud of being in Bangladesh and also attending this expo. This kind of expo is very useful for the development of Bangladesh and its garment industry. I believe in next 15 – 20 years Bangladesh will be the most popular hub for garment production as well. There are many talented entrepreneurs in Bangladesh who have been working for European and American markets. So I believe Bangladesh garment industry will reach a new height in next 20 years.

This is Arif Mohammed Labu, working for Bestseller as a Product Manager for denim and looking after Bangladesh market and some part of Pakistan, Dubai and Cambodia. This fair is one of the most important expo in Bangladesh because it’s actually making us more transparent which is also the theme of this show this time. And it’s a place to have all innovations in one place. It’s like one-stop mall where we can have fabrics, accessories, everything. As we can see this is a very big show, everybody is here and everybody is ready to do business. So I think this show is very important for us as it creates a huge value for everyone. How’s it helping us all? The country’s young generation, I mean new comers who are working in the apparel industry do not always get opportunity to travel all around the word to see all the innovations in the fashion industry. When we have a show like Bangladesh Denim Expo then our youngsters get a great opportunity to have huge experience from this exhibition. We can say that it’s a reunion of the denim industry for Bangladesh, an exposure to the world that how much efficient we are in denim industry.

This is our third time we are joining Bangladesh Denim Expo and we are really happy to be here again and be welcomed by such a good organizer. We would like to continue to join this expo every year. Most of the brands that we work with have their own office in Bangladesh and their staffs are visiting the expo every here. This is a big opportunity for everybody who is in denim industry to meet their vendors or customers or suppliers. I can see the expo is growing and expanding each year. I hope next year more people will discover the denim expo and more people will come from different places of the world.

I’m Oguz from Turkey. We are participating in the 7 th edition of the Bangladesh Denim Expo. Bangladesh is a great country for sourcing denim garment and this kind of exhibition really means a lot in the denim market. What Mr. Mostafiz and his team have been doing is really inspiring. We have been in the expo since its 1st edition and so have seen its gradual improvement. It’s improving a lot. By now it has become an international exhibition. I am very happy to be here and to be part of this. A good part of this exhibition is that so many young people are visiting this exhibition and getting to know them and collect their ideas. And of course this young generation will soon replace the senior and they will be in charge also. I wish the expo all the success.

I am Alice Tonello, R & D Manager of Tonello Company. This exhibition for sure is an amazing place. It’s becoming a gathering place to find our friends from Bangladesh, our customers, brands and designers. I think it’s helping a lot. This exhibition plays a great role in promoting what Bangladesh is doing and the way this country is growing. I saw a huge difference in this country over the years. We started to sell 25 years ago in Bangladesh. Now the country is completely different. I really believe this exhibition for sure can help the country to improve its image and develop the textile industry.

PROMOTING BANGLADESH – THE EXPO IN NUMBERS 7 TH E D I T I O N
The November 2017 Edition of Bangladesh Denim Expo marked our 7th event since our first Expo in November 2014. Each subsequent Edition has grown in stature and has gained wide international recognition as the leading denim trade fair in the region.
I
With every Edition of the Expo it has been the objective to both promote the Bangladesh denim industry to a global audience and to introduce visitors to the vast potential available within the country, whilst offering a forum where interested parties can connect with leading members of the denim community, form new business relationships and gain insight into the vast scope of opportunities that Bangladesh has to offer in the fields of fabric development, garment manufacturing and finishing techniques. Operating as a non-profit organization, Bangladesh Denim Expo is proud that over the seven Editions we have been able to promote topics of international relevance. The most recent theme of the event was TRANSPARENCY, highlighting the importance of adopting transparent business practices, and the social and environmental benefits that can be gained by all. Below is a graphic representation showing how the Expo has grown over the last 3 years, and we would like to thank all our visitors, exhibitors and contributors who have helped in making this possible – without your continued support the Expo would not be the established international institution that it has become today.

Visitor numbers and exhibitor numbers have steadily increased since our inaugural event, and the November 2017 Expo played host to in excess of 5000 visitors and 65 exhibitors, 18 of those being leading Bangladesh denim mills and manufacturers; truly cementing the event as an important date in the international denim calendar, and promoting the Bangladesh denim industry to a broad international and local audience.
