e our guest as we take a look back on the many exciting events of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009. This short retrospective provides an interesting insight into what we have learned, experienced and achieved in partnership with you, devoting a separate page to each month. The central theme that pervades the MFG Review of 2009 is “Collaborative Design” – the joint accomplishment of creative tasks. Twelve hand-picked designers, fine and commercial artists and illustrators from BadenWürttemberg have been allotted space in which to present their ideas. Different creative disciplines are combined and interspersed with references to our work. The outcome of this experiment is truly remarkable: It shows the huge potential that can be unleashed when creative professionals from a variety of fields collaborate to produce something new. If you would like to find out more about the people responsible for the illustrations, graphics and installation art, please turn to page 20. The Creativity World Forum, which took place in December, was a special highlight of our activities. In cooperation with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, we
succeeded in bringing together 2000 leading creative minds from 29 industries and 28 countries in two days. The result was a unique “Creative Lab” for new ideas. With the KarlSteinbuch Scholarship, we provided targeted support to talented young people in the ICT and media world and helped them realise a series of innovative projects. And because of our cluster initiatives and networks, we were able to match Baden-Württemberg enterprises with partners not only from the local region but indeed from all over Europe. We are particularly proud of the numerous awards received in the last year for our excellent processes, projects and publications. The eDemocracy Award for our eParticipation project VoicE, and the Customer Excellence Award for our customer relationship management are just two examples. Our knowledge management was likewise honoured – with the award “Excellent Knowledge Organisation” from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). We would like to usher you in the New Year by inviting you to experiment and formulate new ideas in collaboration with us and with other businesses, research institutes and training providers in Baden-Württemberg and throughout Europe. We look forward to more exciting projects as your partner!

o mark the start of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009, MFG – as a “trusted partner” of the European Union – announces a highly attractive programme of actions. Numerous events at regional, national and European level give creative industry representatives an opportunity to increase their knowledge, explore strategies for innovation fostering and to forge international contacts. Parallel to this, the MFG Akademie kicks off the year 2009 with a new seminar programme. Not only issues of the future are on the curriculum, but also practice-proven knowledge which is relevant to business success in the ICT and creative industries.

Seminar participants are taught how to leverage innovative technologies more effectively by pioneers and experienced experts. Considerable interest is likewise attracted by so-called webinars which can be flexibly integrated into everyday work routines because both students and tutors interact in a live online session. Other innovative learning forms are tested by MFG within the EU project VoiceS, where a serious game dealing with the EU’s legislative processes is being developed since the beginning of the year. This is especially true of “Kreativraum Stuttgart” – a whole week combines prestigious media events like the International Festival of Animated Film Stuttgart (ITFS) and fmx, the Conference for Computer Animation, with new formats like the European Creativity Dialogue. Around 100,000 creative doers and decisionmakers take advantage of this unique opportunity afforded by MFG and its regional and international partners to participate in a mutual exchange and apply creative potential to business relationships. With 200 participants and a waiting list of 50 would-be attendees, the MFG info event “Twitter in corporate communication” in the evening of October 13 is completely sold out. The event is Germany’s number one topic on Twitter that day. MFG also tests new communication forms for clusters and landmark initiatives. Thanks to this unique immediacy and the high attendee motivation, the “participatory conference” confirms its reputation as a trend barometer for Web 2.0. Facebook marketing, Twitter as an election campaign instrument, Open Innovation and Enterprise 2.0 are just a few of the top topics.

penness and a willingness to take risks are basic prerequisites of creativity and innovation. Bosch chairman Franz Fehrenbach and director Doris Dörrie are in total agreement on this question at the Creativity World Forum 2009 in Ludwigsburg. MFG CEO Klaus Haasis likewise appeals for more openness with his plea “Combining the Unexpected”. Hartmut Esslinger, too, is driven by a love of experimentation. However, the star designer – one of the masterminds behind brands like Apple – also knows that creative excellence demands tremendous efforts. The former Prime Minister of Finland and Nokia manager Esko Aho concords with this opinion. He is convinced
that “at least 10,000 hours of hard training” and even more passion form the bedrock of success stories. The inspiring influence of an exchange that transcends both national borders and industry boundaries is also evident at the “Creativity Think Tank”. Instead of the estimated 100 ideas, an impressive total of 130 concrete ideas and suggestions were developed during the 100 minutes estimated for this session. The five future trends identified by the EU project CReATE under the leadership of MFG Baden-Württemberg, formed the basis for the workshop. visual effects: at the “Creative Talent Pitch” young software researchers and media artists – all of them Karl-Steinbuch Scholarship holders – totally justify the faith placed in Baden-Württemberg’s creative new blood. T
he central theme that pervades the MFG Review of 2009 is “Collaborative Design” – the joint accomplishment of creative tasks. Twelve hand-picked designers, fine and commercial artists and illustrators from Baden-Württemberg have been allotted space in which to present their ideas.
