Love children’s fashion and am inspired by my own children. I love that I am able to involve my children in my work and make it fun for them too. I am always grateful for everyday and consider my family my first priority, everything else is a bonus!

Being creative has been a passion of mine since very early on. I was very crafty, constantly drawing, painting and making collages about the world around me. I’m lucky to be hands on with all the creative team here at Orange Central.

Has always enjoyed observing people’s style, warm winter jumpers summer dresses, “the way people put together outfits always fascinates me”. From the streets of Melbourne & Sydney, to Montreal & New York, are the core of her observations. Lulu’s aim is for blogging to be, daring & inspirational.

Most of my career has been in banking and whilst I have always loved and enjoyed my role, I always felt like there was something missing. I am loving every minute of my role as Internet and Marketing Manager as well as a hands on mum whenever I’m needed here at Orange Central!

Letter from

the editor

We are fast approaching the end of 2011, another year almost gone and I’m certain I am not alone when I say how quickly the years go by. Maybe because being a mum means we never really stop. I think once we grow up and adulthood ensues, life just changes and goes a whole lot faster. If only I knew then what I know now, I am certain I would have spent many more days lazing in the grass with not one care in the world. We are so lucky to be blessed with children, weather as a parent a relative or a friend we are all so fortunate to have them around us. One thing is for sure, this stretch of the year is the best part by far for adults and children alike. There is the hint of summer in the air; the days are longer, beach, sand and play, pools, ice cream and fun in the sun. There is something about the lead up to Christmas and the festive season that makes us all a little bit Giddy. I would like to personally welcome you to our first edition of Purple Orange our e-magazine, I hope you enjoy the fun surprises, tips, recipes, ideas, interviews from our gorgeous brand owners and so much more. Enjoy and don’t forget to write us and let us know thoughts and ideas

Crawford FATHER OF TWO, AFL CHAMPION, TELEVISION PERSONALITY, WORLD RECORD HOLDER, CHARITY WORKER & MOST RECENTLY THE CO-FOUNDER OF THE NEW CHILDRENS CLOTHING LABEL KINIKI Congratulations to all the Kiniki team on a fun, quirky and fresh, new label, we love the Brand name, the style and we really do think its best on the playground. Kiniki is very much a personal favourite here at Orange Central and we would love to know... What is the real inspiration behind the amazing creations and designs for Kiniki? Thanks we are proud of what we have achieved with the label so far. Our Australian Culture is Kiniki’s inspiration. When we design a collection, we keep it real by picturing the lifestyle our Aussie kids lead. Do your sons Charlie and Benjamin help to inspire the designs ? do they love wearing the clothes mum and dad make for them? They sure do love wearing them, as well as receiving so many new clothes so often. Ben especially always wants to wear his ‘Niki’ (as he calls Kiniki) clothes. Both boys are very active so I always keep this in mind when I look at the designs – is it comfy to wear all day? Can I climb at the park in those jeans? Etc How do you manage to juggle the busy football career, all the things in between and being a cool dad and husband? I try to be really organised so I can be home as much as possible, especially at the times I know Olivia needs my help the most. The boys love it if I can pick them up from kinder, so

when I can I work that into my day. Most of the year I have a busy schedule that includes weekends but I am lucky to have a lot of time off over the summer months so it evens out over the year. You’ve managed to niche a market that caters many designs in unisex, something not easily done with kids clothing. How have the designers managed to do this without compromising the quirky styles? The denim works so well for both genders. Kids shape’s are similar, no hips for girls and usually not much ...... for boys. When you put a black skinny leg on a little girl, with a girly top, she looks right on trend. And boys look great in colours, and love wearing colour. My boys really love pink at the moment too. We would love to see some tees in adult wear would you ever consider doing an adult range? At the moment we are enjoying the children’s market too much. It has been discussed, but just for print tees, singlets and sweats. We also like the idea of the “maybe adult” range giving a bit back to the environment. (Or BCNA) Some say husband and wives working together can be disastrous. I don’t agree at all and love working with my husband. He has an amazing sense for something different and often balances out my emotions when we are buying

for next season. I appreciate that he has the ability to see what I don’t always see and consider this the key to a successful future together.

trampoline, bike riding or swimming, that’s when the boys are most happy, when they have my full attention doing some sort of activity.

What is one of the key differences between yours and Olivia’s ideas that make you successful together?

What’s your all time favourite children’s animation? How about your favourite show as a child?

Although we do clash sometimes, our strengths are in different areas & we both recognise that. I am more into the bigger picture stuff, where as Olivia can follow a job from start to finish with all the details in between. Olivia has a marketing background, including 15 years in advertising agencies so I leave that stuff to her.

I loved the Smurfs so it’s been great with the new movie coming out as now the boys are into them too. Charlie thinks I’m pretty cool when I actually know their names & talk about what I liked when I was his age.

What’s your favourite piece from this season? I think the board shorts are so cool. Plus now we have the long sleeved rash vests to match it is very sun smart for the long hot Aussie summers. Besides the obvious what’s your ideal father son time? We all love just being at home with no distractions. We recently moved to a place with a much bigger backyard. Playing outside on the

We have to ask oranges or lemons? Definitely Oranges, they remind me of growing up in the country when mum would bring them to the footy to have at half time... Great memories from a simple Aussie childhood

MOTHER TO THREE CHILDREN, WIFE TO SWIMMING CHAMPION MICHAEL KLIM, A PRINCESS, SUPER MODEL, DJ, CHARITY WORKER & MOST RECENTLY THE CREATIVE MIND BEHIND THE BEAUTIFUL ORGANIC RANGE, MILK BABY. You have said in the past that your inspiration behind MILK BABY was primarily because you wanted a safe and organic range for your own children, especially for the sensitive skin of a newborn. The oils and the beautiful scents such seem to have transpired perfectly into MILK BABY and clearly speak for themselves. However for those who don’t know much about Milk Baby... How would you best describe the inspiration and the range of new products to a mother of a newborn baby? Milk Baby is an all organic skincare range made in Tasmania for your little one. Not only is it a great organic product it looks stylish in the home. I have also just created a Milk Baby essentials range, this range is all natural and made In Tassie but contains a range of product that you will need to use every day. Released early Dec, so stay tuned. What makes Milk stand out from other organic ranges on the market? We have three room sprays in our Milk Baby Signature range, Snotty Grotty, Nighty Night and Stinky Winky which are unlike any other on the market to date. We also find that our stylish packaging and the high organic content set us apart from other brands in Australia. Michael has a men’s range available, and just in case you don’t have enough to do, would you ever consider a women’s range? Definitely it’s on the cards – Milk by Lindy Klim, is in development and we hope to launch sometime next year! What’s your favourite Milk Baby product and why? Snotty Grotty is definitely one of my favourite products (although I have a few) as it actually works! If your baby has the sniffles simply spray around the room and the Chamomile and Eucalyptus will help clear them up instantly – also great for adults!

In the past you have made reference to how hard it was growing up in Australia coming from a family of mixed cultures. What advice would you give to children who may be in similar situations and may be bullied as a result? With my daughter Stella we try and instil in her mind that everyone is different and that this is a good thing – she is beautiful no matter! What advice do you give to working mums trying to find the perfect balance - whilst juggling careers, children and life? Always take time for yourself – it makes you a better mother when you are there. Live in the moment, if you at work, you think about work and the same goes with home life, there is no point worrying about other things whilst with your family. It will only ruin the time that you have with them. I know how much dedication love and support has gone into opening my own business and how important having a loving family is. Although along the way, there have been times when I have thrown my arms in the air and asked myself, what on earth you are doing! What advice would you give to mums wanting to open their own business whilst raising a family? Always start small, everyone has good and bad days it’s not always going to be perfect. Like all small business you must be passionate and surround yourself with people who have like minded goal and willing to support you the entire way!

potty training tips Sing her praises

Read together

Surprise, surprise!

We made up a little song that we sang every time our daughter sat on the potty. She loved it. When she finished, we would sing a different song saying what she had done. It wasn’t too long before she used the potty every time! // Christie

Lucy and I went to the bookshop and she chose three picture books she really liked. We called these the potty books, and she could read them only when she sat on the potty //Amy Watson

Our daughter wasn’t very consistent with potty training until we introduced the surprise bag. We got a load of inexpensive toys and stickers and put them in a colourful gift bag. Every time she used the potty, we would clap and let her pick one surprise out of the bag. We kept it up for about a week and a half, and when the surprises ran out she just kept on using the potty. We kept up the clapping and praise, and she quickly forgot about the surprise bag. I can honestly say that potty training was painless and quick, and I plan to use this method again with my next child //Lottie

Boxers, please! My son was fully potty-trained at three, except he wouldn’t do a poo in the toilet. I tried everything, and asked everyone. Finally one day we were shopping and he asked for boxers. I told him that if we got these he would have to use the toilet or it would get all over the place. That seemed to be the magic thing, because ever since then he has had no more accidents. //Sasha

An untraditional one My 28-month-old really loved my nail polish. I found some in a toy shop that would come off when she washed her hands, so I let Meriel paint her fingernails every time she weed in her potty. I told her that when she did a poo she could have some of Mummy’s polish, which wouldn’t wash off. Ten days later, she was completely potty-trained! // Dawn Lister Read more:http://www.babycenter.com.au/toddler/pottytraining/parentstips

The coloured water trick

Give up to get results

We dyed the toilet water with red or blue food colouring; it changes to orange or green and they love knowing that they did this. // Anna Rice

Our daughter Rachel was two and a half when we finally got her trained. We tried everything in the book. She wanted to wear knickers, but not go to the potty. Finally we said, “Go ahead and do what you want”. Two days later, she started using the potty on her own, with no encouragement from us!//Nat Benson

Magical potty My second child caught on in two weeks. Her potty had a square in the bowl, which turned into a star every time fluid hit it. That was her big challenge, to make a star, and it became a game for her. //Angela Cooper

read di’s winning entry below: Children don’t need to be pressured into potty training and will generally tell us on their own when they are ready. When that times comes as parents we need to be calm and excited. We should except accidents to happen and still praise our little one. Have a chart placed in the bathroom with each day of the week with stickers as a reward for each time we have a successful potty run. And a special treat or prize for every 10 successful goes. Generally if children are ready to go to the toilet alone they will be excited and the prospect of treats for doing well is often a good technique. If it all goes well they should be nappy free within a couple weeks!! Yay no more nappies ... www.orangesandlemonsboiutique.com.au

the benefits of reading for kids We’re always telling children that books and reading are good for them but do we know why we are even saying this to them. Reading to children from an early age is important because it inspires key developmental skills. Books will help children develop important language skills; reading is something that is vital in every single person’s life. It’s the key component required in every part of our lives and is an essential ingredient in all aspects of life. Think about how often we read throughout the day. The cereal box, the street sign, a magazine the TV everything is centred on knowing how to read.

The more children read the more they will be interested in, and they will eventually become better readers. Reading should be viewed as fun and entertaining - that’s why finding books on your children’s current interests is the key to success. If we make reading a chore for kids or become frustrated when they make mistakes, then it takes away the fun and children will lose interest quickly. As teachers to our children we must not make reading feel like something we must do, rather it should be viewed as a fun leisurely time together. 32

www.orangesandlemonsboiutique.com.au

Reading out loud and using expressions, proper grammar will only enhance the way children speak and it will help develop language skills and correct verbal use. Reading enriches our children’s imaginations and they will often hear words they don’t know or understand yet. That’s ok though because with repetition and correct use of these words they will eventually learn. Reading opens the doors to many new topics about parts of the world, different cultures, different people and different ideas in general.

Reading enhances children’s life skills in many different ways; picture books create imaginative thinking and when children are older novels will capture imaginative thoughts and ideas created in our mind. Reading is and should be a soothing escape; with proper guidance reading will create a wealth of knowledge in our children’s minds and create pathways for the future in a truly magical way.

Renewal through meditation BY DEEPAK CHOPRA, M.D. ONLY A FEW DECADES AGO, Western medicine viewed the body as a machine whose parts would inevitably break down until they could no longer be repaired. Medical students were taught that random chemical reactions determined everything that happened in the body, the mind and body were separate and independent from each other, and our health and lifespan were largely determined by genes. Today scientific research is arriving at a radically different understanding, albeit one reached by ancient wisdom traditions thousands of years ago: The body and mind are inextricably connected in a network of energy and intelligence that is in constant, dynamic exchange with the world around us. With every breath we take, every mouthful of food we swallow, every sound we hear, and every sensation we feel, our body is changing. Furthermore, we are the only creatures on the planet who can change biology through our thoughts and feelings. Our cells are constantly eavesdropping on our thoughts and being changed by them. If we experience a happy thought or a feeling of love, our body is directly influenced as messenger molecules course through the bloodstream, delivering the positive energizing effect to trillions of cells. Dark thoughts and feelings of depression suppress our immune system, leaving us vulnerable to illness.

The Ripple Effect Even the smallest changes in energy, such as just a few words, can lead to large-scale disruptions in the body. If we find out that our spouse is filing for divorce or that our entire bank account has been wiped out, our thoughts and feelings can instantly trigger a stress response in our body. Also known as a fight-or-flight response, the physiological changes include increased heart rate and blood pressure, sweating, the production of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, suppressed immune functioning, and accelerated breathing and oxygen consumption.

Cultivating Restful Awareness The opposite of the fight-or-flight response is the restful response, which includes restful sleep and the restful awareness experienced during meditation. When we’re in a state of restful awareness, our body is resting deeply while the mind is awake though quiet. Research has found that people who regularly experience restful awareness develop less hypertension, heart disease, anxiety, and depression. They find it easier to give up life-damaging addictions to cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol. People who meditate regularly also experience wide-ranging health benefits and a reversal in many of the biomarkers of aging. In short, meditation is the perfect vehicle for renewing the body, mind, and spirit. By its very nature, meditation exposes your brain to a less active state. Through repeated exposure, your brain adapts to that stillness and silence and works gently to stem the fight-or-flight stress response. Meditation is a vital way to purify and quiet the mind, thus rejuvenating the body.

Getting Started with Meditation I usually recommend that people learn a traditional meditation practice from a qualified instructor. That way, you know exactly what to do at any point in meditation and with any experience that comes along. Often when people try to learn on their own or from a book, they learn incorrectly and soon give up in frustration because they aren’t experiencing the expected benefits. When you begin to meditate on a regular basis, you will start to notice that thoughts and feelings that may have been building up inside of you are gently released and you reach the quiet place that was always there, waiting for you – the place of pure awareness. It is there that you will experience peace, healing, and true rejuvenation. Known as the prolific author of over 55 books with eighteen New York Times best sellers on mind-body health, spirituality, and peace, Times Magazine heralds Chopra as one of the top 100 heroes and icons of this century. Visit: www.Chopra.com. Passage taken from http://www.healyourlife.com

Prolonged stress can make us sick and accelerate aging. Over time, the stress response can lead to high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, cancer, insomnia, depression, and autoimmune diseases.

health & wellbeing tips to rejuvenate mums Experience Your Good Now! BY LOUISE L. HAY. Welcome to the world of affirmations! By choosing to use affirmations, you’ve made a conscious decision to heal your life and move forward on the path of positive change . . . and the time for that positive change is now! There is no time like the present for you to take control of your thoughts. Join the countless numbers of people who have changed their lives for the better with affirmations. Doing affirmations is not hard work. It can be a joyous experience as you lift the burden of old negative beliefs and release them back to the nothingness from whence they came. Just because you’ve believed something negative about yourself or about your life does not mean that there is any truth to it. As children, we hear negative things about ourselves and about life and we accept these ideas as if they’re true. Now, we’re going to examine the things we’ve believed and make a decision to either continue to believe them because they support us and make our life joyful and fulfilled, or make the decision to release them. I like to imagine that I’m letting go of old beliefs by dropping them into a river, and they gently drift downstream and dissolve and disappear, never to return again. Come into my garden of life and plant new thoughts and ideas that are beautiful and nourishing. Life loves you and wants you to have the very best. Life wants you to have peace of mind,

inner joy, confidence, and an abundance of self-worth and selflove. You deserve to feel at ease at all times with all people and to earn a good living. So let me help you plant these ideas in your new garden. We will nourish them and watch them grow into beautiful flowers and fruits that will in turn then feed and nourish you all of your life. Let’s affirm: Life brings out the best in me today. Passage taken from http://www.healyourlife.com

Gratitude BY LOUISE L. HAY. “I have noticed that the universe loves gratitude. The more grateful you are the more goodies you get. When I say “goodies”, I don’t mean only material things. I mean all the people, places & experiences that make life so wonderfully worth living. You know how great you feel when your life is filled with love & joy & health & creativity, & you get the green lights & the parking places. This is how our lives are meant to be lived. The universe is a generous, abundant giver, and it likes to be appreciated.” Passage taken from page two of Louise Hays – Gratitude

Welcome to the first edition of FashionTrics for Purple Orange where you will get to see some of the best fashion advise from around the globe and nationally. I have come to love and understand the similarities in kids style v’s adult style in recent years and there isn’t much different at all. This month we are looking at the luscious color red. Don’t be afraid to sport head-to-toe red this Spring/Summer all the way till Fall. The Spring Runway was littered with all-red ensembles from some of Fashion’s key Houses including Gucci, Prada and Burberry.

KEY TREND Team a red pair of cropped jeans with a white slouch tee and a pair of point stilettos. Tuck one side of the tee in and accessorize with a saddle handbag. OR if your deciding to dress your little one in the color red this summer, try the same combo, but drop the stilettos and accessorize with a pair of ballet Mary Jane’s available at www. orangesandlemonsboutique. com.au The Tric is- don’t be afraid to dash a bright accessory in the mix xx

gifts

Choosing the right goodies is an important step. Buy your basket items first, you don’t want your actual gifts to be restricted by the suitcase size you choose ahead of time. When you’re considering what things to buy, try making your gifts as personal & practical as possible.

don’t forget your

manners Children Inspire Design is a product line of modern, eco-friendly and culturally diverse wall art, wall cards and posters, full of whimsy, and designed to help children learn compassion for our earth and all who inhabit it. Artist, mother and social entrepreneur, Rebecca Peragine, has combined her passion for global design with her desire to inspire children to celebrate ecoconsciousness and the beauty of different world cultures.

children inspire design - 5 x 7 manners cards

$35.00

Environmental education is at the heart of each design. Every image literally starts out as a pile of scrap papers from old magazines and other post-consumer paper sources. Rebecca then creates her signature art piece by piece by tearing the pieces of paper, assembling them according to their vibrant colors and drawing inspiration from her imagination and the “life” that each piece embodies. Many of the magazines she uses are written in other languages, thereby imbuing the art with the spirit of that language and the people it represents. Through this

78

www.orangesandlemonsboiutique.com.au

approach, the concepts of recycling and world appreciation are ever present. Rebecca firmly believes that if we teach the importance of global responsibility at a young age, carrying that responsibility into the future will be second nature for our children. Inspire children. Change the world. Every parent wants their child to understand and practice good manners. Why not teach your child the importance of manners and respect with these vintage modern wall cards. Designed for the child’s eye, these cards can be framed or used as flash cards. Included are 8 cards: •

teaching our children clever green solutions Our child and we might find that most of our children have already taken the lead in the home and tell us how to be recycling and be sustainably eco friendly.

Here are some extra tips to help you along:

of recyclables and then show kids how to separate plastic, paper, aluminium and glass. Then explain how these items can be reused and not to throw them in a regular garbage bin

4. How about getting old school creative and making toys out of old containers and boxes

5. Encourage children to plant and take care of the garden

6. Why not try your hand at composting. Collect all kitchen scraps from fruits, veggies, tea/coffee grounds & newspaper in a container. Plant these scraps outside, which will help create better soil and reduce landfill waste.

7. When out shopping remember to switch from plastic/paper bags to reusable bags and totes.

my goals for 2012 YOUR MIND IS A POWERFUL AND CREATIVE TOOL FOR CHANGE. WHAT WILL YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IN 2012

The new year is the traditional time to stop and ask yourself: Am I leading a well-balanced life? It’s easy to get bogged down in the details, in setting goals that relate to how you think you want to look, act or be in this world. But why not bypass all these norms. (The numbers on the scale, the bank account balance, the stopping of old habits) and search for a deeper approach that can reshape your whole life in a positive way.

As the end of this year approaches, I cant help but think back to the start of this year. It was my turn to eagerly anticipate the first day at school for my son. I remember very clearly thinking... Was my little boy going to be okay, would he make friends, would he be hungry, would he miss me, would he know where the toilet was. Over and over I would ask myself a million questions, had I prepared correctly for this, would he be safe, would he use his manners, would he know how much I love him and would he know how fast the years had gone by already. Yes he would know - on his first day of school my little boy looked back at me, ‘its okay mum I’m going to be fine, kissed me and walked away’. I had done everything right, it was the first time I had to let go of my little boys hand and set him free into the big world. I embrace this next chapter of my life...

delicious & tasty SPINACH & RICOTTA GNOCCHI Serves 4 + 800 grams ricotta + 80g plain flour + 80g parmesan cheese + 1 egg + 1 cube frozen spinach 1. Gently mix all the ingredients together. 2. Once all the ingredients are combined, roll spoon fulls of the mixture into small balls (just like meat balls). 3. Bring a pot of water to boil and place the rolled balls into the boiling water . In a couple of minutes they will begin to float to the top. When this occurs, remove from the pot using a drainer but do not drain as this will squash and ruin them, instead place them in a baking tray. 4. Once in the baking tray, apply your Neapolitan plain tomatoes sauce (well cooked) over the gnocchi and sprinkle with parmesan cheese. 5.When this is done, pop the tray into a preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes at 180 degrees. Remove and serve
