ARCHITECTURE
PLANNING
INTERIOR DESIGN
We believe that architecture is inextricably tied to use, place, client aspirations and cultural traditions. We also believe that the greatest buildings are those that cannot be imagined anywhere else in the world. Thus, it is our mission to provide clients around the globe with highly functional, intuitive design solutions that are sensitive to an ever changing built environment in both scale and context. We bring design excellence to all building types.
We see planning as a vital part of the built landscape, a process that begins with the development of a hierarchical organization of spatial relationships between buildings and the surrounding built or natural context. Our master plans impart a distinct sense of community and place, while establishing a framework for current and future decisions. Throughout the world, we have created award-winning designs that are functional, efficient, site specific and sustainable.
We believe interior design should reflect each client’s culture and communicate their values while meeting both their functional and aesthetic goals. Our projects range from company headquarters to international hotels to interiors for public institutions. Working in conjunction with MGA&D’s product designers, our interior designers often custom-design furniture and artwork that complement the character of the firm’s architecture and interiors.

OUR DESIGN PROCESS Today’s buzz word in healthcare is “Evidenced Based Design.” Over ten years ago, Michael Graves became the reluctant healthcare expert when he became paraplegic. Since then, he and his companies have focused on leveraging the evidence he has collected, in order to improve healthcare experiences and accessibility – by design. In 2009, MGA&D and Stryker Medical formed a meaningful partnership to focus on “the last frontier” of hospital design, the patient room experience. The Michael Graves-Stryker furniture collection is rooted in ethnographic hospital research. Designed as a comprehensive collection with all stakeholders in mind, each piece has functional innovation. The collection successfully provides solutions to the challenges of the patient and caregiver experience.

CAN PATIENT ROOM FURNITURE BE DESIGNED TO: HELP CONTROL INFECTION? PREVENT FALLS? REDUCE CAREGIVER BACK STRAIN?
RESEARCH DRIVEN SOLUTIONS On the overbed table and the bedside stands, certain “passive” and “active” strategies for mitigating the spread of infection were designed into the products. The form and color distinction on the top of the overbed table teaches patients to keep the main area clear, so food service can leave a patient’s food tray without

We also streamlined the overbed table and bedside stands to make them easier to disinfect. On the overbed table there is no split top,
there are not cavities, there are no outboard bins. The stand assist armrests on the patient chair make it easier for patients to safely get into and out of the chairs. This innovation reduces nurse and patient injuries common with these transfers.

MICHAEL GRAVES FOR STRYKER PRIME TC TRANSPORT CHAIR Hospitals are constantly evolving to improve patient outcomes, yet a key piece of equipment that is ubiquitous has gone unaltered since it was patented in 1933. And it was never designed for use in the hospital. We’re talking about the wheelchair! Prime TC is the result of a thorough product development process undertaken to transform seated patient transport in the hospital. Discoveries have turned into real solutions to problems that go beyond the patient experience.

YALE-NEW HAVEN HOSPITAL CENTER FOR RESTORATIVE CARE NEW HAVEN, CT Yale-New Haven Hospital offers one of the oldest and most comprehensive geriatric assessment programs in the United States and the hospital’s geriatric services is ranked #18 in US News and World Report’s 2014 Best Hospital rankings. Previously housed on an older med/surg patient floor, the new unit incorporates architectural elements and signage specifically designed to support the care of patients 65 and older. As part of the design, MGA&D developed a unique signage system to alert clinicians and visitors of precautions and protocols that needed to be followed. The signage was designed to be easily maintained to reduce risk of infection.

YALE-NEW HAVEN HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT RENOVATION NEW HAVEN, CT The 13,000 SF renovation to the Emergency Department at the St. Raphael Campus of Yale-New Haven hospital will benefit the entire New Haven community. The design was developed in conjunction with clinicians to support a “Split Flow” operational model that streamlines the patient intake, registration and triage process to ensure that higher acuity patients are seen immediately while at the same time reducing the waiting time for lesser acuity level patients. The layout of the new emergency department allows the space to “flex up” or “flex down” to support clinical operations based on patient volume. The design supports immediate assessment upon checkin resulting in significantly reduced waiting times and patient flow congestion. Additionally, patients not assigned to a bed may wait for test results in a comfortable lounge area intended to free up available exam rooms.

ST. COLETTA OF GREATER WASHINGTON WASHINGTON, D.C. St. Coletta of Greater Washington is a nonprofit charter school in the District of Columbia, serving individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and various physical disabilities. Guided by the philosophy that all children are special, MGA&D addressed formal, functional, social and ecological concerns in the design, and created a facility with such success that St. Coletta promotes it as a national model. The 99,000 sq.ft. school serves 168 students Kindergarten age through young adulthood and has two adult day care programs for 50 participants. The various elements of the building program are distinctly articulated in the plan and on the exterior of the building, where the massing and facades also respond to the scale of adjacent neighborhoods.

WOUNDED WARRIOR HOME PROJECT FORT BELVOIR, VA In November 2010, MGA&D was commissioned by Clark Realty Capital to design the Wounded Warriors Home Project. The project calls for the design of single family prototype homes intended to serve the needs of wounded soldiers and their families as they continue to serve on active duty at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The design of these prototypes is intended to provide for the needs of a varied group of people who have been injured and/or adversely affected by their military service.

SHORE ORTHO SOMERS POINT, NJ In a competitive market for orthopaedic services, Shore Ortho sought a building that would be attractive to patients and communicate the quality of the physicians’ practice. By using lean design principles, MGA&D also streamlined daily operations, and thereby made treatment more cost

effective and faster, with obvious benefits for both the medical practice and its patients. MGA&D’s graphic design strengthened Shore Ortho’s brand identity. MGA&D’s client, the developer Scarborough Properties, paired MGA&D with a contractor early in
the design process, resulting in the equivalent of integrated project delivery. Ongoing cost and schedule analysis of systems and materials allowed high-quality but economical development and a construction period of a mere 6 months.
The floor plan is organized by a clear circulation system of 5-foot wide corridors that differentiate the patient and staff zones, and ensure privacy (exceeding HIPAA standards) and efficiency for both. Natural light throughout the building conveys a sense of transparency and openness. Controlled views to the outside, especially to a private semienclosed garden, create a sense of wellbeing. Physical therapy facilities feature large windows with a view to the garden and an outdoor therapy terrace.
