MICHAEL GRAVES ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

WE BELIEVE HUMANISM IS THE SOUL OF DESIGN AND ENABLES TRANSFORMATIVE RESULTS. WE VIEW EACH DESIGN OPPORTUNITY AS AN UNFOLDING STORY – AND THE PERSON OCCUPYING THE SPACE OR USING A PRODUCT – AS THE CENTRAL CHARACTER. BY FOCUSING ON THE INDIVIDUAL, WE HUMANIZE DESIGN. AS A RESULT, PEOPLE EXPERIENCE OUR WORK SPATIALLY, VISUALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.

INTERIOR DESIGN

ARCHITECTURE

PLANNING

We believe interior design should reflect each client’s culture and communicate their values while meeting both their functional and aesthetic goals. Our projects range from company headquarters to international hotels to interiors for public institutions. Working in conjunction with MGA&D’s product designers, our interior designers often custom-design furniture and artwork that complement the character of the firm’s architecture and interiors.

We believe that architecture is inextricably tied to use, place, client aspirations and cultural traditions. We also believe that the greatest buildings are those that cannot be imagined anywhere else in the world. Thus, it is our mission to provide clients around the globe with highly functional, intuitive design solutions that are sensitive to an ever changing built environment in both scale and context. We bring design excellence to all building types.

We see planning as a vital part of the built landscape, a process that begins with the development of a hierarchical organization of spatial relationships between buildings and the surrounding built or natural context. Our master plans impart a distinct sense of community and place, while establishing a framework for current and future decisions. Throughout the world, we have created award-winning designs that are functional, efficient, site specific and sustainable.

RESIDENCES

CEDAR GABLES HOUSE MINNETONKA, MN This house was designed for, and exhibited in, the 1999 “Parade of Homes” show house tour in Minneapolis. Its name, “Cedar Gables,” refers to its distinctive symmetrical three-gabled cedarshingled roof, that faces the street. The windows are framed with deep trim, and the roof and second floor overhang the main level, creating shadows and strong forms and massing that distinguish this house in its suburban neighborhood. Cedar Gables has two levels of living space, a three-car garage, and a walkout basement. The plan features a centrally located doubleheight stair hall that opens up the middle of the house. A two-story maple-paneled Great Room adjoins an eat-in kitchen with a deck overlooking a pond. Other rooms are an office/study, three children’s bedrooms, a master bedroom suite, two full and two half baths, and a second floor laundry room.

PURA WILLIAMS MANCHESTERBY-THE-SEA, MA This 3,500 square foot family home is located on a bluff along the rocky New England coast, approximately 60 feet from the Atlantic Ocean. The program called for individual pavilions containing a residence, an office, guest quarters, swimming pool, pool house, and garden elements. The architectural design was responsive to its oceanfront context, and the casual nature of the composition in plan is reminiscent of other New England compounds which were developed over time.

INDIAN HILL PRIVATE RESIDENCE Located on a three-and-a-half acre lot adjacent to heavily wooded public parkland and overlooking the Little Miami River, this residence is arranged in an L-shaped configuration to engage the surrounding landscape. The house’s massing consists of ten distinct pavilions carefully arranged within a building area constrained by numerous zoning requirements. Formally individualized through their distinctive, shapes, colors, and materials, the pavilions evolved from varied programmatic uses. Outbuildings include a studio and a large garden structure with attached greenhouse.

THE WAREHOUSE MICHAEL GRAVES RESIDENCE Graves’ private home known as “The Warehouse,” serves as a showpiece for the architect’s broad array of interests and influences. The 7,000 square foot home, a former storage facility, is carefully furnished with his extensive collections of books, art, furniture and objects, combining antiques with his own designs. A former rental warehouse, constructed in a Tuscan vernacular style in the 1920s by Italian stonemasons working on Collegiate Gothic buildings at Princeton University, the design takes the structure’s original 1920s artisanal design and adds exquisite touches — from the Italian poplars lining the driveway to the thousands of books in a two-story library.
