ARCHITECTURE
PLANNING
INTERIOR DESIGN
We believe that architecture is inextricably tied to use, place, client aspirations and cultural traditions. We also believe that the greatest buildings are those that cannot be imagined anywhere else in the world. Thus, it is our mission to provide clients around the globe with highly functional, intuitive design solutions that are sensitive to an ever changing built environment in both scale and context. We bring design excellence to all building types.
We see planning as a vital part of the built landscape, a process that begins with the development of a hierarchical organization of spatial relationships between buildings and the surrounding built or natural context. Our master plans impart a distinct sense of community and place, while establishing a framework for current and future decisions. Throughout the world, we have created award-winning designs that are functional, efficient, site specific and sustainable.
We believe interior design should reflect each client’s culture and communicate their values while meeting both their functional and aesthetic goals. Our projects range from company headquarters to international hotels to interiors for public institutions. Working in conjunction with MGA&D’s product designers, our interior designers often custom-design furniture and artwork that complement the character of the firm’s architecture and interiors.

51º SPA RESIDENCES & HOTEL LOECHE LES BAINS, SWITZERLAND 51º Spa Residences and the Kempinski Hotel create a new paradigm for resort living. By using the famous thermal waters that emerge from the ground at 51º Celsius, luxury and nature combine in ways never before imagined. Replacing a traditional pre-development phase, the architect and a real estate advisor jointly conducted an innovative “envisioning” session with the client, where big design ideas combined with thorough market analysis to create a realistic, economically sound project.

Surrounded by some of the most picturesquely iced peaks in Switzerland’s famed Valais region, 51º stands at the northern edge of the Leukerbad Valley, on the crest of a gentle grade where the streets of the old town reach a natural open space adjacent to the Lindner Hotel and the historic train station. From this location, the view opens up to the mountain range.
1. T he Spa Residences occupy two linked five-story buildings to one side of the central plaza, and contain 10 for-sale apartments, 18 serviced apartments operated by the hotel, a restaurant and nightclub. The Kempinski Hotel, in three linked buildings, contains 50 hotel rooms, and 41 serviced apartments. A large world-class spa occupies the lower level of both buildings. 2. T he open space, flanked by the Residences on one side and the Hotel on the other, becomes a town center; a lively plaza with large-scale outdoor fireplaces and water features, which will function essentially as the town’s “living room.”

1. As with the exterior of the buildings, the interiors of the for-sale apartments incorporate natural materials such as stone and wood, reinforcing the experience of indoor-outdoor living. The hotel guestrooms and serviced apartments have a similar interior tone, look, and feel. 2. Thermal water is provided to private spas in the apartments, which feature plunge pools on wraparound balconies that open fully to the interiors, creating an exhilarating indoor-outdoor experience that is echoed in the project’s world-class spa, a portion of which is an authentic Russian banya.

TATA HOUSING DEVELOPMENT COLOMBO, SRI LANKA TATA Housing development’s One Colombo Heritage is a mixed-use development in Sri Lanaka. Inspired by the scale and significance of the historic buildings and streets of Colombo to create a unique new destination in the city, this contemporary interpretation of the essential qualities of Sri Lankan architecture and urban fabric is used to generate a dynamic environment where people, place, and context come together. The project is meant to establish a new standard for sustainable urban living in Colombo with well sited towers and façade shading to offset the effects of the tropical sun. Balconies and terraces at the residential floors will extend the living area while natural ventilation will take advantage of the prevailing breezes and help to offset energy usage. The combination of conservation, community, and sustainability is unique when identifying other market offerings in the area.

KEY URBAN DESIGN PRINCIPLES 1. A CRITICAL INTERSECTION The project is located in an important urban intersection. The proposal seeks to create a civic space at the corner of Justice Akbar and Malay St. This new open space will provide a foreground to the new development, creating an urban landmark as the city approaches the sea.
