Jesus said: ‘I am a servant of God. He has granted me the Scripture; made me a prophet; made me blessed wherever I may be. He commanded me to pray, to give alms as long as I live, to cherish my mother. He did not make me domineering or graceless. Peace was on me the day I was born, and will be on me the day I die and the day I am raised to life again. Such was Jesus, son of Mary, [This is] a statement of the Truth about which they are in doubt:

The Most Remarkable Birth in History Relate in the book [the story of] Mary and how she withdrew from her family to a place in the east, where she kept herself in seclusion from them. We, then, sent to her Our Angel, who appeared to her in the shape of a well-made human being. She said: May the Most Merciful protect me from you. [Do not come near me] if you fear God.’ ‘I am but an emissary of your Lord,’ he said, [and has come] to give you a son endowed with purity. ‘She said: ‘How shall I have a child when no man has ever touched me and I have never been a loose woman?’ He answered: ‘thus did your Lord speak: This is easy for Me. We will make him a sign for mankind and an act of grace from Us. It is a matter [We have] decreed.’ (Verses 16-21)
ﻣِﻦ ﻬ اﻟْﻜِﺘَﺎبِ ذ ﺷَ ﻗِْﻴًّﺎ َِاذْﻛ ﺮُْ ﰲ ﺎ ﻣََﺎﻧًﺎ ﺮ ﻣَ ﱘََْ إِِ اﻧﺘَﺒَﺬ تَْ ْ أَ ﻠﻫَِْ ﻜ ﺮ ِﻢ ﺣِﺠ ًا ﺳَ ﻳ (19:17) ًِّﺎ َﺎﲣﱠَﺬ تَْ ﻣِﻦ دُو�ِْ َﺎﺑًﺎ ﻓَﺄَرْﺳَﻠْﻨَﺎ إِﻟَﻴـْﻬ َﺎ رُ ﻨ وﺣََﺎ ﻓـﺘََﻤ ﺜَﱠﻞَ ﳍََﺎ ﺑَﺸ ﺮَ ﻮ َﺎﻟَﺖْ إِﱐﱢأَﻋُﻮذُ ﺑِﺎﻟﺮﱠﲪَْﻦ ﻣِﻨﻚَ إِن ﻛُﻨﺖَ ﻴ (19:18) ﺗَﻘًِّﺎ ﳕ (19:19) ﻛِﻴًّﺎ َﻣً ز َﺎلَ إِﱠَﺎ أَﻧَﺎ رَﺳُﻮلُ رَﺑﱢﻚِ ﻷَِﻫَﺐ َ ﻟَﻚِ ﻏُﻼ ﺎ (19:20) ﺑَِﻴًّﺎ َِﺎﻟَﺖْ أَﱏﱠ ﻳَﻜُﻮنُ ﱄ ﻏُﻼمٌ ﱂوََْ ﳝَْﺴَﺴ ﲏِْ ﺑَﺸ ﺮٌَ ﱂوََْ أَكُ ﻐ ﻗَﺎلَ ﻛَﺬَﻟِﻚِ ﻗَﺎَ رَﺑﱡﻚِ ﻫُﻮَ ﻋَﻠَﻲﱠ ٌﱢوَﻟِﻨَ َﻠَﻪُ آﻳ ً ﻟِﻠﻨﱠﺎسِ وَ ًْ ﻣﱢﻨﱠﺎ وَﻛَﺎنَ أَﻣْﺮًا ﻣﱠﻘْﻀ ﻴ (19:21) ًِّﺎ رَﲪ َﺔ ﻫَﲔ ﺠْﻌ َﺔ (19:16)

“So she conceived him, and retired to a far-off place. And the throes of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree. [In her anguish] she cried: ‘Would that I had died before this and passed into complete oblivion!’” (Verses 22-23)
َﺤََﻠَﺘْﻪُ ﻓَﺎﻧﺘَﺒَ تَْ ﺑِﻪِ ﻣََﺎﻧًﺎ ﻗَﺼ ﻴ ًِّﺎ ﻤ ﻜ ﺬ ﻓَﺄَﺟﺎء ﺎ ﺨﺎضُ إِﱃَ ﺟِﺬْعِ اﻟﻨﱠﺨْﻠَﺔِ ﻗَﺎ ﺎ ﻟَﻴْﺘَﲏِ ﻣِﺖﱡ ﻗـَﺒْﻞَ ﻫَﺬَا َُﻨﺖُ ﻧَﺴًْ ﻴ (19:23) ﻣﱠﻨﺴًِّﺎ َ ََ َﻫَ اﻟْﻤ ﻴﺎ َﻟَﺖْ ﻳ ﻛ (19:22)

How Jesus Was Born But [a voice] from below cried out to her: Do not give in to grief. Your Lord has provided a brook running beneath you. And if you shake the trunk of the palm tree towards you, it will drop you fresh ripe dates. So eat and drink and be happy. Should you see any human being,

just convey this to him: I have vowed a fast to the Most Merciful and will not speak today to any human being.’ (Verses 24-26)
ﻚِ ﺳَِﻳًّﺎ َْ ﻓـَﻨَﺎدَاﻫَ ﺎ ﻣِﻦ ﲢَْﺘِﻬَ ﺎ أَﻻ ﱠ ﲢﺰَﱐِ ﻗَﺪْ ﺟَﻌَﻞَ َﺑﱡﻚِ ﲢَْﺘَ ﺮ ﻂ (19:25) ِﺬْعِ اﻟﻨﱠﺨْﻠَﺔِ ﺗُﺴَﺎﻗِْ ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻚِ رَُﺒً ﺟَﻨِﻴًّﺎ َِﻫُﺰﱢي إِﻟَﻴْﻚِ ﲜ ﻃﺎ ﺪًا ﻓـَﻘُﻮﱄِ إِﱐﱢ ﻧَﺬَرْتُ ﻟِﻠﺮﱠﲪَْﻦِ ﺻ ﺎ ﻓـَ ﻠَﻦْ ُﻛَﻠﱢﻢَ اﻟْﻴـَ ﻴ ﻮْمَ إِﻧﺴًِّﺎ ﻓَﻜُﻠِﻲ وَاﺷْﺮَ ﰊ ًَﻮْﻣ َِ وَﻗـَﺮﱢي ﻋَﻴـْﻨًﺎ ﻓَﺈِﻣﱠ ﺎ ﺗـَﺮَﻳِﻦﱠ ﻣِﻦَ اﻟْﺒَﺸَﺮِ أَﺣ (19:24)

As Mary Confronts Her People “She went to her people carrying the child.” “Mary, you have indeed done a mighty thing! Sister of Aaron, your father was not a wicked man, nor was your mother a loose woman!” “But she pointed to the child.” Again we are left to imagine their amazement, anger and fury at this young woman, virgin as she was, carrying her child openly in her arms, and then refusing to answer their questions, only pointing to the child and indicating that they should ask him. “They said: How can we talk to a babe in the cradle?” (Verse 27-29)
ﻗَﺎﻟُﻮا ﻳَﺎ ﻣَ ﱘَُْ ﻟَﻘَﺪْ ﺟِﺌْﺖِ ﺷَﻴْﺌًﺎ ﻓَﺮِﻳًّﺎ َُﺄَﺗَﺖْ ﺑِﻪِ ﻗـَﻮْﻣ ﻬََﺎ ﲢَْﻤِﻠُﻪ ﺮ (19:28) َﺎﻧَﺖْ أُﻣﱡِ ﺑَِﻴًّﺎ ﻳَﺎ أُﺧْﺖَ ﻫَ ﺎرُونَ ﻣَ ﺎ ﻛَ ﺎنَ أَﺑُﻮكِ اﻣْﺮَأَ ﺳَﻮْ ٍء وَﻣَ ﺎ ﻚ ﻐ (19:29) اﻟْﻤَﻬْﺪِ ﺻَﺒِﻴًّﺎ َِﺄَﺷَﺎرَتْ إِﻟَﻴْﻪِ ﻗَﺎﻟُﻮا ﻛَﻴْﻒَ ﻧُﻜَﻠﱢﻢُ ﻣَﻦ ﻛَﺎنَ ﰲ (19:27)

Whereupon he said: I am a servant of God. He has vouchsafed to me revelations and made me a prophet, and made me blessed wherever I may be. He has enjoined on me prayer and charity as long as I live. He has made me kind to my mother, not haughty or bereft of grace. Peace was on me on the day when I was born, and [will be on me] on the day of my death and on the day when I shall be raised to life again.’ (Verses 30-33)
َﺎلَ إِﱐﱢﻋَﺒْﺪُ اﻟﻠﱠﻪِ آﺗَﺎﱐَِ اﻟْﻜِﺘَﺎبَ وَﺟَﻌ َﻠَﲏِ ﻧَﺒِﻴًّﺎ (19:31) اﻟﺰﱠﻛَﺎةِ ﻣَﺎ دُﻣْﺖُ ﺣًَّﺎ َﻨﺖُ وََوْﺻَﺎﱐِ ﺑِﺎﻟﺼﱠﻼةِ و َﺟَﻌ َﻠَﲏِ ﻣُﺒَ ﺎ ﻴ ﺎرَﻛً أَﻳْﻦَ ﻣَﺎ ﻛُ أ ﻴ َﺑـﺮًَّا ﺑِﻮَاﻟِ َﺪﰐ (19:32) َﺒﱠﺎرًا ﺷًَِّﺎ ِِ وَﱂَْ ﳚَْﻌَﻠْﲏ ﻘ (19:30)

ﺣًَّﺎ َاﻟﺴﱠﻼمُ ﻋَﻠَﻲﱠ ﻳـَﻮْمَ وُﻟِﺪتﱡ وَﻳـَﻮْمَ أَﻣُﻮتُ وَﻳـَﻮْمَ أُﺑـْﻌ ﺚَُ ﻴ

Such was, in the words of truth, Jesus the son of Mary, about whose nature they still dispute. It is not conceivable that God should beget a son. Limitless is He in His glory! When He wills a thing to be, He only says to it, be,’ and it is. God is my Lord and your Lord; so worship Him alone. That is a straight path. (Verses 34-36)
َذَﻟِﻚَ ﻋِﻴﺴَ ﻰ اﺑْﻦُ ﻣَﺮْﱘََ ﻗـَﻮْلَ اﳊَْﻖﱢ اﻟﱠﺬِي ﻓِﻴﻪِ ﳝَْﺘـَﺮُون ٍ (19:35) ُﺎﻧَﻪُ إِذَا ﻗَﻀَ ﻰ أَﻣْﺮًا ﻓَﺈِﳕﱠَﺎ ﻳـَﻘُﻮلُ ﻟَﻪُ ﻛُﻦ ﻓـَﻴَﻜُﻮن َﻣَ ﺎ ﻛَ ﺎنَ ﻟِﻠﱠﻪِ أَن ﻳـَﺘﱠﺨِﺬَ ﻣِﻦ وَﻟَﺪ ﺳُﺒْﺤ (19:36) ٌٌ ﻣﱡﺴْﺘَﻘِﻴﻢ وَإِنﱠ اﻟﻠﱠﻪَ رَ ﰊﱢ وَرَﺑﱡﻜُﻢْ ﻓَﺎﻋْﺒُﺪُوﻩُ ﻫَﺬَا ﺻِﺮَاط (19:34)

The Full Truth about Jesus This is the whole truth about Jesus. It has nothing of the claims advanced by those who assign to him a divine nature, or those who make false accusations against his mother. What God states here is the complete truth, giving details of his origin and birth. There is no room for doubt or argument. It is not for God to take for Himself a son. Most sublime is He in His glory. He needs no son, because offspring are only needed by mortals, so that their line of existence is continued. Alternatively, offspring are needed by the weak so that they have the support of their children against their enemies. But God is immortal, and able to do what He wills, having power over all things. All creatures come into existence when He says to them, ‘Be’. This means that He accomplishes any purpose of His merely by willing it to take place, not by having help from a son or partner. Jesus concludes his words by declaring the truth that God is his Lord and the Lord of all mankind. Hence, they must worship Him alone, assigning to Him no partners: “God is my Lord and your Lord; so worship Him alone. That is a straight path.” (Verse 36) With this statement made by Jesus himself, and with this account of his birth there is no room left for legend or myth in the whole affair. This is the full import of his statement and the way it is phrased.

Preparation for a Special Event The angels said: ‘Mary, God has chosen you and made you pure, and raised you above all the women of the world. Mary, Remain truly devout to your Lord, prostrate yourself [to Him] and bow down with those who bow down in worship. This is an account of something which remained beyond the reach of your perception We now reveal to you. You were not present with them when they cast lots as to which of them should have charge of Mary; nor were you present when they contended about it with one another. (Verses 42-44)
ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ﲔ َ اﺻﻄََﻔﺎك َﻋﻠَﻰ ﻧ َﺴﺎء اﻟْ َﻌﺎﻟَﻤ ْ اﺻﻄََﻔﺎك َوﻃَ ﱠﻬَﺮك َو ْ َ• َوإِ ْذ ﻗَﺎﻟَﺖ اﻟْ َﻤﻼﺋ َﻜﺔُ ﻳَﺎ َﻣ ْﺮَﱘُ إِ ﱠن اﻟﻠﱠﻪ ِ ﻚو ِِ ِ ِ ِ (3:43) ﲔ َ اﺳ ُﺠﺪي َو ْارَﻛﻌﻲ َﻣ َﻊ اﻟﱠﺮاﻛﻌ ْ َ • ﻳَﺎ َﻣ ْﺮَﱘُ اﻗْـﻨُِﱵ ﻟَﺮﺑﱢ ِ ِ ُﺐ ﻧ ِ ِ ﻚ ِﻣ ْﻦ أَﻧﺒَﺎء اﻟْﻐَْﻴ ﻨﺖ ﻟَ َﺪﻳْ ِﻬ ْﻢ َ ﻮﺣ ِﻴﻪ إِﻟَْﻴ َ • َذﻟ َ ﻼﻣ ُﻬ ْﻢ أَﻳـﱡ ُﻬ ْﻢ ﻳَ ْﻜ ُﻔ ُﻞ َﻣ ْﺮَﱘَ َوَﻣﺎ ُﻛ َ ﻚ َوَﻣﺎ ُﻛ َ ْﻨﺖ ﻟَ َﺪﻳْ ِﻬ ْﻢ إ ْذ ﻳـُْﻠ ُﻘﻮن أَﻗ ِ َإِ ْذ َﳜْﺘ (3:44) ن َ ﺼ ُﻤﻮ (3:42)
A Miraculous Birth The angels said: ‘Mary, God sends you the happy news, through a word from Him, [of a son] whose name is the Christ, Jesus, son of Mary, honored in this world and in the life to come, and shall be among those who are favored by God. He shall speak to people in his cradle, and as a grown man, and shall be of the righteous.” Said (she: “My Lord! How can I have a son when no man has ever touched me?”)[The angel] answered: “Thus it is. God creates what He wills. When He wills a thing to be, He only says to it be, and it is. He will teach him the book and wisdom, and the Torah and the Gospel, and will make him a messenger to the Israelites. I have brought you a sign from your Lord. I will fashion for you out of clay the likeness of a bird. I shall breathe into it and, by God’s leave; it shall become a living bird. I will heal the blind and the leper, and bring the dead back to life by God’s leave. I will announce to you what you eat and what you store up in your houses. Surely, in all this there is a sign for you, if you are truly believers. (Verses 45-9)

Jesus Endorsing a Message And [I have come] to confirm that which has already been sent down of the Torah and to make lawful to you some of the things which were forbidden you. I have come to you with a sign from your Lord; so remain conscious of God and obey me. God is indeed my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him alone. That is the straight path. (Verses 50-1)
ِ ِ ِ • وﻣﺼ ﱢﺪﻗًﺎ ﻟﱢﻤﺎ ﺑـﲔ ﻳ َﺪ ﱠ ْﺾ اﻟﱠ ِﺬي ُﺣﱢﺮَم َﻋﻠَْﻴ ُﻜ ْﻢ َوِﺟْﺌﺘُ ُﻜﻢ ﺑِﺂﻳٍَﺔ ﱢﻣﻦ ﱠرﺑﱢ ُﻜ ْﻢ ﻓَﺎﺗﱠـ ُﻘﻮا َ ي ﻣ َﻦ اﻟﺘـ ْﱠﻮَراة َوِﻷُﺣ ﱠﻞ ﻟَ ُﻜﻢ ﺑَـ ْﻌ َ ََْ َ َ ُ َ ِ ِ َﻃﻴﻌ (3:50) ﻮن ُ اﻟﻠﱠﻪَ َوأ ِ ِ (3:51) ط ﱡﻣﺴﺘَﻘﻴﻢ ْ َ• إِ ﱠن اﻟﻠﱠﻪَ َرﱢﰊ َوَرﺑﱡ ُﻜ ْﻢ ﻓ ٌ ْ ٌ ﺎﻋﺒُ ُﺪوﻩُ َﻫ َﺬا ﺻَﺮا An Appeal for Help When Jesus became conscious of their rejection of the faith, he asked: “Who will be my helpers in the cause of God?” The disciples replied: “We are [your] helpers in God’s cause. We believe in God. Bear you witness that we have surrendered ourselves to Him. Our Lord, we believe in what You have bestowed from on high, and we follow the messenger, so write us down among those who bear witness [to the truth].” (Verses 52-3)
ِ • ﻓَـﻠَ ﱠﻤﺎ أَﺣ ﱠ َﻧﺼ ُﺎر اﻟﻠﱠ ِﻪ َآﻣﻨﱠﺎ ﺑِﺎﻟﻠﱠ ِﻪ َوا ْﺷ َﻬ ْﺪ ْ ﺎل َ ََﻧﺼﺎ ِري إِ َﱃ اﻟﻠﱠ ِﻪ ﻗ َ َﻴﺴﻰ ِﻣْﻨـ ُﻬ ُﻢ اﻟْ ُﻜ ْﻔَﺮ ﻗ َ اﳊََﻮا ِرﻳﱡﻮ َن َْﳓ ُﻦ أ َ ﺎل َﻣ ْﻦ أ َ َ ﺲﻋ (3:52) ن َ ﺑِﺄَﻧﱠﺎ ُﻣ ْﺴﻠِ ُﻤﻮ ِِ ِ (3:53) ﻛﺘُﺒـﻨَﺎ ﻣﻊ اﻟﺸﱠﺎﻫﺪﻳﻦ َ ﺖ َواﺗﱠـﺒَـ ْﻌﻨَﺎ اﻟﱠﺮ ُﺳ ْ َْﻧﺰﻟ َ • َرﺑـﱠﻨَﺎ َآﻣﻨﱠﺎ ﲟَﺎ أ َ َ ْ ْ ﻮل ﻓَﺎ َ 2

Full Heavenly Reward They schemed, and God also schemed. God is the best of schemers. God said: ‘Jesus, I shall gather you and cause you to ascend to Me, and I shall cleanse you of those who disbelieve, and I shall place those who follow you above those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me you shall all return, and I shall judge between you with regard to everything on which you used to differ. As for those who disbelieve, I shall inflict on them severe suffering in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to help them. But to those who believe and do good works, He will grant their reward in full. God does not love the wrongdoers.” (Verses 54-7)
ِ ﻳﻦ َ • َوَﻣ َﻜ ُﺮواْ َوَﻣ َﻜَﺮ اﻟﻠﱠﻪُ َواﻟﻠﱠﻪُ َﺧْﻴـ ُﺮ اﻟْ َﻤﺎﻛ ِﺮ ِﱠ ِِ ﱠ ِِ ﱠ ِ ِ • إِ ْذ ﻗَ َ ﱠ ﻳﻦ َ ُﻳﻦ اﺗﱠـﺒَـﻌ ﻚ إِ َﱠ َ ُﻴﻚ َوَراﻓﻌ َ ﻴﺴﻰ إِ ﱢﱐ ُﻣﺘَـ َﻮﻓﱢ َ ﻮك ﻓَـ ْﻮ َق اﻟﺬ َ ﻳﻦ َﻛ َﻔ ُﺮواْ َو َﺟﺎﻋ ُﻞ اﻟﺬ َ ﱄ َوُﻣﻄَ ﱢﻬ ُﺮَك ﻣ َﻦ اﻟﺬ َ ﺎل اﻟﻠﻪُ ﻳَﺎ ﻋ ِ ِ َﻛ َﻔﺮواْ إِ َﱃ ﻳـﻮِم اﻟْ ِﻘﻴﺎﻣ ِﺔ ﰒُﱠ إِ َﱠ (3:55) ن َ ﻴﻤﺎ ُﻛﻨﺘُ ْﻢ ﻓِ ِﻴﻪ َﲣْﺘَﻠِ ُﻔﻮ ْ ﱄ َﻣ ْﺮﺟﻌُ ُﻜ ْﻢ ﻓَﺄ َ َ َْ َ َﺣ ُﻜ ُﻢ ﺑَـْﻴـﻨَ ُﻜ ْﻢ ﻓ ُ ِ ِ ِ ِِ ﱠ ِ ً ُﻋ ﱢﺬﺑـُ ُﻬ ْﻢ َﻋ َﺬاﺑًﺎ َﺷﺪ (3:56) ﺎﺻ ِﺮﻳﻦ َ ﻳﻦ َﻛ َﻔ ُﺮواْ ﻓَﺄ َ ﻳﺪا ﰲ اﻟ ﱡﺪﻧْـﻴَﺎ َواﻵﺧَﺮة َوَﻣﺎ َﳍُﻢ ﱢﻣﻦ ﻧﱠ َ • ﻓَﺄَﱠﻣﺎ اﻟﺬ ِ ِ • وأَﱠﻣﺎ اﻟﱠ ِﺬﻳﻦ آﻣﻨُﻮا وﻋ ِﻤﻠُﻮاْ اﻟ ﱠ ِ ِ ﺎت ﻓَـﻴـﻮﻓﱢﻴ ِﻬﻢ أُﺟﻮرﻫﻢ واﻟﻠﱠﻪ ﻻَ ُِﳛ ﱡ (3:57) ﲔ ََ َ َ َ ﺐ اﻟﻈﱠﺎﻟﻤ ُ َ ْ ُ َ ُ ْ َ ُ َﺼﺎﳊ َ (3:54)
A Challenge to Stop All Argument This which We recite to you is a revelation and a wise reminder.” The case of Jesus in the sight of God is the same as the case of Adam. He created him of dust and then said to him: “Be” and he was. This is the truth from your Lord: be not, then, among the doubters. If anyone should dispute with you about this [truth] after all the knowledge you have received, say: “Come. Let us summon our sons and your sons, our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves; then let us pray humbly and solemnly and invoke God’s curse upon the ones who are telling a lie. (Verses 58-61)
ِ ِ ﻚ ِﻣﻦ اﻵﻳ اﳊَ ِﻜﻴ ِﻢ ْ ﺎت َواﻟ ﱢﺬ ْﻛ ِﺮ َ • ذَﻟ َ َ َ ﻚ ﻧـَْﺘـﻠُﻮﻩُ َﻋﻠَْﻴ ِ َ • إِ ﱠن ﻣﺜَﻞ ِﻋﻴﺴﻰ ِﻋ ٍ آدم َﺧﻠَ َﻘﻪُ ِﻣﻦ ﺗـُﺮ (3:59) ن َ َاب ﰒُﱠ ﻗ ُ ﺎل ﻟَﻪُ ُﻛﻦ ﻓَـﻴَ ُﻜﻮ َ َ ﻨﺪ اﻟﻠﱠﻪ َﻛ َﻤﺜَ ِﻞ َ َ َ َ ِ (3:60) ﱰﻳﻦ ْ • َ اﳊَ ﱡﻖ ِﻣﻦ ﱠرﺑﱢ َ َ ﻚ ﻓَﻼَ ﺗَ ُﻜﻦ ﱢﻣﻦ اﻟْ ُﻤ ْﻤ ﻚ ﻓِ ِﻴﻪ ِﻣﻦ ﺑَـ ْﻌ ِﺪ َﻣﺎ َﺟﺎءَ َك ِﻣ َﻦ اﻟْﻌِْﻠ ِﻢ ﻓَـ ُﻘ ْﻞ ﺗَـ َﻌﺎﻟَ ْﻮا ﻧَ ْﺪعُ أَﺑْـﻨَﺎءَﻧَﺎ َوأَﺑْـﻨَﺎءَ ُﻛ ْﻢ َوﻧِ َﺴﺎءﻧَﺎ َوﻧِ َﺴﺎء ُﻛ ْﻢ َوأَﻧ ُﻔ َﺴﻨَﺎ َ • ﻓَ َﻤ ْﻦ َﺣﺎ ﱠﺟ ِ ِ (3:61) ﲔ َ ِوأَﻧ ُﻔ َﺴ ُﻜ ْﻢ ﰒُﱠ ﻧَـْﺒﺘَ ِﻬ ْﻞ ﻓَـﻨَ ْﺠ َﻌﻞ ﻟﱠ ْﻌﻨَﺔَ اﻟﻠﱠﻪ َﻋﻠَﻰ اﻟْ َﻜﺎذﺑ (3:58)

When There Is Nothing More to Say This is indeed the truth of the matter. There is no deity save God. Indeed, it is God Who is the Mighty, the Wise. And if they turn away, God has full knowledge of those who spread corruption. Say: ‘People of earlier revelations Let us come to an agreement which is equitable between you and us: that we shall worship none but God, that we Āl `Imran (The House of `Imran) shall associate no partners with Him, and that we shall not take one another for lords beside God. “And if they turn away, then say: “Bear witness that we have surrendered ourselves to God.” (Verses 62-4)
ِ ْ اﳊ ﱡﻖ وﻣﺎ ِﻣﻦ إِﻟٍَﻪ إِﻻﱠ اﻟﻠﱠﻪ وإِ ﱠن اﻟﻠﱠﻪ َﳍﻮ اﻟْﻌ ِﺰﻳﺰ ﻴﻢ ُ َ َُ َ َ ُ َ • إِ ﱠن َﻫ َﺬا َﳍَُﻮ اﻟْ َﻘ ْ َ َ َْ ﺺ ُ ﺼ ُ اﳊَﻜ ِ ِ ِ ِ• ﻓَِﺈن ﺗَـﻮﻟﱠﻮا ﻓَِﺈ ﱠن اﻟﻠﱠﻪ ﻋﻠ (3:63) ﺴﺪﻳﻦ َْ ٌ ََ َ ﻴﻢ ﺑﺎﻟْ ُﻤ ْﻔ ِ ﺎب ﺗَـﻌﺎﻟَﻮا إِ َﱃ َﻛﻠِﻤ ٍﺔ ﺳﻮاء ﺑـﻴـﻨَـﻨَﺎ وﺑـﻴـﻨَ ُﻜﻢ أَﻻﱠ ﻧَـﻌﺒ َﺪ إِﻻﱠ اﻟﻠﱠﻪ وﻻَ ﻧُ ْﺸ ِﺮَك ﺑِِﻪ َﺷﻴﺌﺎ وﻻَ ﻳـﺘ ِ ِ ﱠﺨ َﺬ ُْ َ َ ًْ ْ َ َ• ﻗُ ْﻞ ﻳَﺎ أ َْﻫ َﻞ اﻟْﻜﺘ ْ َْ َ َْ َ َ َ ََ ِ ﻀﺎ أَرﺑﺎﺑﺎ ﱢﻣﻦ د (3:64) ن َ ون اﻟﻠﱠ ِﻪ ﻓَِﺈن ﺗَـ َﻮﻟﱠ ْﻮا ﻓَـ ُﻘﻮﻟُﻮاْ ا ْﺷ َﻬ ُﺪواْ ﺑِﺄَﻧﱠﺎ ُﻣ ْﺴﻠِ ُﻤﻮ ُ ﺑَـ ْﻌ ُ ً َ ْ ً ﻀﻨَﺎ ﺑَـ ْﻌ (3:62)
The controversy surrounding religious beliefs (the Jews, Christians, and the Muslims) People of earlier revelations! Why do you argue about Abraham when both the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed till after him? Have you no sense? (65) You have indeed argued about that of which you have some knowledge; why then do you argue about that of which you have no knowledge at all? God knows, whereas you do not know. (66) Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian; but he was wholly devoted to God, having surrendered himself to Him. He was not of those who associate partners with God. (67) The people who have the best claim to Abraham are those who followed him and this Prophet and those who are true believers. God is the Guardian of the believers. (68) A party of the people of earlier revelations would love to lead you astray; but they lead astray none but themselves, although they may not perceive it. (69) People of earlier revelations! Why do you disbelieve in God’s revelations when you yourselves bear witness [to their truth]? (70) (3:65)

ِ• ﻫﺎأَﻧﺘﻢ ﻫﺆﻻء ﺣﺎﺟﺠﺘﻢ ﻓِﻴﻤﺎ ﻟَ ُﻜﻢ ﺑِِﻪ ِﻋ ْﻠﻢ ﻓَﻠِﻢ ُﲢﺎ ﱡﺟﻮ َن ﻓ ﻴ ﻟ ﺎ ﻴﻤ َ َﺲ ﻟَ ُﻜﻢ ﺑِِﻪ ِﻋ ْﻠ ٌﻢ َواﻟﻠﱠﻪُ ﻳَـ ْﻌﻠَ ُﻢ َوأَﻧﺘُ ْﻢ ﻻ َ َ ٌ ْ َ َ ْ ُْ َ َ ُ َ ْ ُ َ َ (3:66) ن َ ﺗَـ ْﻌﻠَ ُﻤﻮ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ (3:67) ﲔ َ • ﺎ ﻛَﺎنَ إِﺑـْﺮَاﻫِﻴﻢُ ﻳـَﻬُﻮدِﻳًّﺎ وَﻻَ ﻧَﺼْﺮَاﻧِﻴًّﺎ َوﻟَﻜﻦ َﻛﺎ َن َﺣﻨﻴ ًﻔﺎ ﱡﻣ ْﺴﻠ ًﻤﺎ َوَﻣﺎ َﻛﺎ َن ﻣ َﻦ اﻟْ ُﻤ ْﺸ ِﺮﻛ ِ ِ ﱠﺎس ﺑِِﺈﺑـﺮ ِاﻫﻴﻢ ﻟَﻠﱠ ِﺬﻳﻦ اﺗﱠـﺒـﻌﻮﻩ وﻫ َﺬا اﻟﻨِﱠﱯ واﻟﱠ ِﺬﻳﻦ آﻣﻨُﻮاْ واﻟﻠﱠﻪ وِ ﱡ (3:68) ﲔ َ ﱄ اﻟْ ُﻤ ْﺆﻣﻨ َ َ ُ ُ َ َ َ َ ْ ِ • إِ ﱠن أ َْوَﱃ اﻟﻨ َُ َ َ َ َﱡ ِ ِ ﻀﻠﱡﻮﻧَ ُﻜﻢ وﻣﺎ ﻳ ِ ﺎب ﻟَﻮ ﻳ ِ ِ (3:69) ن َ ﻀﻠﱡﻮ َن إِﻻﱠ أَﻧ ُﻔ َﺴ ُﻬ ْﻢ َوَﻣﺎ ﻳَ ْﺸﻌُُﺮو ُ ََ ْ ُ ْ َ• َوﱠدت ﻃﱠﺎﺋ َﻔﺔٌ ﱢﻣ ْﻦ أ َْﻫ ِﻞ اﻟْﻜﺘ ِ ﺎب ِﱂ ﺗَ ْﻜ ُﻔﺮو َن ﺑِﺂﻳ ِ ِ (3:70) ن َ ﺎت اﻟﻠﱠ ِﻪ َوأَﻧﺘُ ْﻢ ﺗَ ْﺸ َﻬ ُﺪو َ ُ َ َ• ﻳَﺎ أ َْﻫ َﻞ اﻟْﻜﺘ
People of earlier revelations! Why do you cloak the truth with falsehood, and knowingly conceal the truth? (71) A party of the people of earlier revelations say [to one another]: “Declare at the beginning of the day, that you believe in what has been revealed to the believers, and then deny it at the end of the day, so that they may go back on their faith. (72) “But do not really trust anyone except those who follow your own faith” — Say: “All true guidance is God’s guidance — that anyone may be given the like of what you have been given. Or that they should contend against you before your Lord.” Say: “Grace is in God’s hand: He bestows it on whom He wills. God is Munificent and All- Knowing.” (73) He singles out for His mercy whom He wills. And God’s grace is great indeed. (74) Among the people of earlier revelations there is many a one who, if you trust him with a treasure, will return it to you intact; and there is among them many a one who, if you trust him with a small gold coin, will not return it to you, unless you keep standing over him. For they say: “We have no obligation to keep faith with Gentiles.” Thus they deliberately say of God what they know to be a lie. (75)
ِ ِ ِ ِ اﳊ ﱠﻖ ﺑِﺎﻟْﺒ اﳊَ ﱠﻖ َوأَﻧﺘُ ْﻢ ﺗَـ ْﻌﻠَ ُﻤﻮ َن ْ ﺎﻃ ِﻞ َوﺗَ ْﻜﺘُ ُﻤﻮ َن َ َْ • ﻳَﺎ أ َْﻫ َﻞ اﻟْﻜﺘَﺎب ﱂَ ﺗَـ ْﻠﺒِ ُﺴﻮ َن ِ ْﺎب ِآﻣﻨُﻮاْ ﺑِﺎﻟﱠ ِﺬي أُﻧ ِﺰَل ﻋﻠَﻰ اﻟﱠ ِﺬﻳﻦ آﻣﻨُﻮاْ وﺟﻪ اﻟﻨـﱠﻬﺎ ِر وا ْﻛ ُﻔﺮوا ِ َ• وﻗَﺎﻟَﺖ ﻃﱠﺎﺋَِﻔﺔٌ ﱢﻣﻦ أ َْﻫ ِﻞ اﻟْ ِﻜﺘ آﺧَﺮﻩُ ﻟَ َﻌﻠﱠ ُﻬ ْﻢ َ ْ َ َ ُ َ َ َْ َ َ َ (3:72) ن َ ﻳَـ ْﺮِﺟﻌُﻮ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ﻨﺪ َ َﺣ ٌﺪ ﱢﻣﺜْ َﻞ َﻣﺎ أُوﺗِﻴﺘُ ْﻢ أ َْو ُﳛَﺎ ﱡﺟﻮُﻛ ْﻢ ِﻋ َ • َوﻻَ ﺗـُ ْﺆﻣﻨُﻮاْ إﻻﱠ ﻟ َﻤﻦ ﺗَﺒِ َﻊ دﻳﻨَ ُﻜ ْﻢ ﻗُ ْﻞ إ ﱠن ا ْﳍَُﺪى ُﻫ َﺪى اﻟﻠﱠﻪ أَن ﻳـُ ْﺆﺗَﻰ أ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ْ رﺑﱢ ُﻜﻢ ﻗُﻞ إِ ﱠن اﻟْ َﻔ (3:73) ﻋﻠﻴﻢ ٌ َ ﻀ َﻞ ﺑﻴَﺪ اﻟﻠﱠﻪ ﻳـُ ْﺆﺗﻴﻪ َﻣﻦ ﻳَ َﺸﺎء َواﻟﻠﱠﻪُ َواﺳ ٌﻊ ْ ْ َ ِ ﻀ ِﻞ اﻟْ َﻌ ِﻈﻴ (3:74) ﻢ • َﳜْﺘَ ﱡ ْ ﺺ ﺑَِﺮ ْﲪَﺘِ ِﻪ َﻣﻦ ﻳَ َﺸﺎء َواﻟﻠﱠﻪُ ذُو اﻟْ َﻔ (3:71)

ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ َ• وِﻣﻦ أ َْﻫ ِﻞ اﻟْ ِﻜﺘ ﺖ َ ﻚ َوِﻣْﻨـ ُﻬﻢ ﱠﻣ ْﻦ إِن ﺗَﺄْ َﻣْﻨﻪُ ﺑِﺪﻳﻨَﺎ ٍر ﻻﱠ ﻳـُ َﺆﱢدﻩ إِﻟَْﻴ َ ﺎب َﻣ ْﻦ إِن ﺗَﺄْ َﻣْﻨﻪُ ﺑِﻘﻨﻄَﺎ ٍر ﻳـُ َﺆﱢدﻩ إِﻟَْﻴ َ ﻚ إِﻻﱠ َﻣﺎ ُد ْﻣ ْ َ ِ ِ ِ ِ َ ﻚ ﺑِﺄَﻧـﱠ ُﻬﻢ ﻗَﺎﻟُﻮاْ ﻟَْﻴﺲ َﻋﻠَْﻴـﻨَﺎ ِﰲ اﻷُﱢﻣﻴﱢ (3:75) ن َ ب َوُﻫ ْﻢ ﻳَـ ْﻌﻠَ ُﻤﻮ َ َﻋﻠَْﻴ ِﻪ ﻗَﺎﺋِ ًﻤﺎ َذﻟ َ ﻴﻞ َوﻳَـ ُﻘﻮﻟُﻮ َن َﻋﻠَﻰ اﻟﻠﱠﻪ اﻟْ َﻜﺬ ْ ٌ ﲔ َﺳﺒ َ Indeed those who fulfill their pledges and guard themselves against evil [enjoy God’s love]; for God loves the righteous. (76) Those who barter away their covenant with God and their oaths for a trifling gain will have no share in the life to come. God will neither speak to them, nor cast a look on them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He cleanse them of their sins. Theirs will be a grievous suffering. (77) There are some among them who twist their tongues when quoting the Scriptures, so that you may think that [what they say] is from the Scriptures, when it is not from the Scriptures. They say: “It is from God”, when it is not from God. Thus, they deliberately say of God what they know to be a lie. (78) It is not conceivable that any human being to whom God had given revelation and wisdom and prophet hood would subsequently say to people: “Worship me instead of God.” But rather: “Be devoted servants of God, by virtue of spreading the knowledge of the Scriptures and your constant study of them.” (79) Nor would he bid you to take the angels and the Prophets as your gods. Would he bid you to be unbelievers after you have surrendered yourselves to God? (80)
ِ • ﺑـﻠَﻰ ﻣﻦ أَو َﰱ ﺑِﻌﻬ ِﺪ ِﻩ واﺗﱠـ َﻘﻰ ﻓَِﺈ ﱠن اﻟﻠﱠﻪ ُِﳛ ﱡ ﲔ َ ﺐ اﻟْ ُﻤﺘﱠﻘ َ َ َْ ْ ْ َ َ ِ ِِ ِ ِِ ﱠ ِ ﻼق َﳍﻢ ِﰲ اﻵﺧَﺮِة َوﻻَ ﻳُ َﻜﻠﱢ ُﻤ ُﻬ ُﻢ اﻟﻠﱠﻪُ َوﻻَ ﻳَﻨﻈُُﺮ َ ِﻳﻦ ﻳَ ْﺸﺘَـ ُﺮو َن ﺑِ َﻌ ْﻬﺪ اﻟﻠﱠ ِﻪ َوأ َْﳝَﺎ� ْﻢ َﲦَﻨًﺎ ﻗَﻠﻴﻼً أ ُْوﻟَﺌ ْ ُ َ ﻚ ﻻَ َﺧ َ • إ ﱠن اﻟﺬ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ (3:77) ﺬاب أَﻟﻴﻢ ٌ ٌ َ إﻟَْﻴﻬ ْﻢ ﻳَـ ْﻮَم اﻟْﻘﻴَ َﺎﻣﺔ َوﻻَ ﻳـَُﺰﱢﻛﻴﻬ ْﻢ َوَﳍُ ْﻢ َﻋ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ َﺎب وﻣﺎ ُﻫﻮ ِﻣﻦ اﻟْ ِﻜﺘ ِ ِ ِ ﺎب َوﻳَـ ُﻘﻮﻟُﻮ َن ُﻫ َﻮ ِﻣ ْﻦ َ َ َ َ َ• َوإ ﱠن ﻣْﻨـ ُﻬ ْﻢ ﻟََﻔ ِﺮﻳ ًﻘﺎ ﻳَـ ْﻠ ُﻮو َن أَﻟْﺴﻨَﺘَـ ُﻬﻢ ﺑﺎﻟْﻜﺘَﺎب ﻟﺘَ ْﺤ َﺴﺒُﻮﻩُ ﻣ َﻦ اﻟْﻜﺘ ِ ِ ِ ِِ ِ ِ ِِ (3:78) ن َ ب َوُﻫ ْﻢ ﻳَـ ْﻌﻠَ ُﻤﻮ َ ﻋﻨﺪ اﻟﻠﱠﻪ َوَﻣﺎ ُﻫ َﻮ ﻣ ْﻦ ﻋﻨﺪ اﻟﻠﱠﻪ َوﻳَـ ُﻘﻮﻟُﻮ َن َﻋﻠَﻰ اﻟﻠﱠﻪ اﻟْ َﻜﺬ ِ ِ ِ ِ ﱠﺎس ُﻛﻮﻧُﻮاْ ِﻋﺒﺎدا ﱢﱄ ِﻣﻦ د ِ ﻮل ﻟِﻠﻨ ون اﻟﻠﱠ ِﻪ َوﻟَ ِﻜﻦ ْ ﺎب َو َ اﳊُ ْﻜ َﻢ َواﻟﻨﱡﺒُـ ﱠﻮةَ ﰒُﱠ ﻳَـ ُﻘ ُ ًَ َ َ• َﻣﺎ َﻛﺎ َن ﻟﺒَ َﺸ ٍﺮ أَن ﻳـُ ْﺆﺗﻴَﻪُ اﻟﻠﱠﻪُ اﻟْﻜﺘ ِ ِ ُﻛﻮﻧُﻮاْ رﺑﱠﺎﻧِﻴﱢ (3:79) ن َ ﺎب َوِﲟَﺎ ُﻛﻨﺘُ ْﻢ ﺗَ ْﺪ ُر ُﺳﻮ َ َ َ َﲔ ﲟَﺎ ُﻛﻨﺘُ ْﻢ ﺗـُ َﻌﻠﱢ ُﻤﻮ َن اﻟْﻜﺘ ِ ِ (3:80) ن َ ﲔ أ َْرﺑَﺎﺑًﺎ أَﻳَﺄْ ُﻣ ُﺮُﻛﻢ ﺑِﺎﻟْ ُﻜ ْﻔ ِﺮ ﺑـَ ْﻌ َﺪ إِ ْذ أَﻧﺘُﻢ ﱡﻣ ْﺴﻠِ ُﻤﻮ َ • َوﻻَ ﻳَﺄْ ُﻣَﺮُﻛ ْﻢ أَن ﺗَـﺘﱠﺨ ُﺬواْ اﻟْ َﻤﻼﺋ َﻜﺔَ َواﻟﻨﱠﺒِﻴﱢ (3:76)
God made a covenant with the Prophets: “If, after what I have vouchsafed to you of the Scriptures and wisdom, there comes to you a messenger confirming the truth of what you have in your possession, you shall believe in him and you shall help him. Do you,” said He,

“affirm this and accept the obligation I lay upon you in these terms?” They answered: “We do affirm it.” Said He: “Then bear witness, and I am also a witness with you.” (81) Then those who turn away afterwards are indeed transgressors. (82) Do they seek a religion other than God’s, when every soul in the heavens and the earth has submitted to Him, willingly or by compulsion, and to Him they shall all return? (83) Say: “We believe in God and in that which has been bestowed from on high upon us, and that which has been bestowed on Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and their descendants, and that which has been vouchsafed by their Lord to Moses and Jesus and all the prophets. We make no distinction between them. To Him do we surrender ourselves?” (84) He who seeks a religion other than self-surrender to God, it will not be accepted from him, and in the life to come he will be among the lost. (85)

Arguing About Jesus Whenever the son of Mary is cited as an example, your people raise an outcry, saying: 'who is better: our deities or he?' They cite him only to challenge you. They are contentious people. (Verses 57-58)
ِ ﻚ ِﻣْﻨﻪ ﻳ ِ ﺼﺪﱡو َن ُ َوﻟَ ﱠﻤﺎ َ ﺿ ِﺮ َ ُ َ ب اﺑْ ُﻦ َﻣ ْﺮَﱘَ َﻣﺜَﻼ إ َذا ﻗَـ ْﻮُﻣ ِ ِ ﻚ إِﻻﱠ ﺟ َﺪﻻً ﺑﻞ ﻫﻢ ﻗَـﻮم ﺧ (43:58) ن َ ﺼ ُﻤﻮ َ َوﻗَﺎﻟُﻮا أَآﳍَﺘُـﻨَﺎ َﺧْﻴـٌﺮ أ َْم ُﻫ َﻮ َﻣﺎ َ ٌ ْ ْ ُ ْ َ َ َ َﺿَﺮﺑُﻮﻩُ ﻟ (43:57)

He was but a servant of ours whom we had favored and made an example to the Children of Israel. Had it been our will, we could have made you angels, succeeding one another on earth. He is a portent of the Last Hour. Have no doubt about it, but follow Me: this is a straight path. (Verses 59-61)

Let not Satan debar you; for he is your sworn enemy. When Jesus came with clear signs, he said: 'I have come to you with wisdom, and to make clear to you some of that on which you differ. Therefore, fear God and follow me. (Verses 62-63)

God is my Lord and your Lord: so worship Him alone. This is a straight path. Yet are the sects at variance among themselves. Woe, then, to the wrongdoers for the painful suffering that will befall them on a grievous day. (Verses 64-65)

Waiting for the Last Hour What are they waiting for other than the Last Hour, which will come upon them all of a sudden and take them unawares? On that Day, friends will become enemies to one another, except for the God-fearing. You, servants of mine, no fear need you do not have today, nor shall you grieve. You, who have believed in our revelations and surrendered yourselves to Us. (Verses 66-69) (43:66)

A Long List of Contradictions “We gave Moses the Book and caused a succession of messengers to follow him. To Jesus, son of Mary, We gave clear proof and supported him with the Holy Spirit. Why is it that every time a messenger comes to you with a message that does not suit your fancies, you glory in your arrogance, charging some (messengers) with lying and slaying others?” (Verse 87)

The Argument Is Finally Settled They say, ‘Follow the Jewish faith — or, follow the Christian faith — and you shall be rightly guided.’ Say, ‘No. We follow the faith of Abraham, who was truly devoted to God, and was not of those who associated partners with God.’ Say [all of you], ‘We believe in God and in what has been revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and their descendants, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what all prophets have been given by their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to God we have surrendered ourselves. ‘ If they come to believe in the way you believe, they will be rightly guided; but if they turn away, they will be in schism, but God will protect you from them; He hears all and knows all.’ (Verses 135-137)

A Middle Community and a Pure Faith The weak-minded among people will say, ‘What has turned them away from the direction of prayer which they have so far observed?’ Say, ‘To God belong the east and the west. He guides whomever He wills to a straight path.’ Thus We have made you the community [Ummah] of the middle way, so that you may stand witness against the rest of mankind, and the Messenger shall be a witness against you. We appointed the direction of prayer which you formerly followed in order that We might distinguish those who follow the Messenger from those who turn on their heels. It was indeed a hard test except for those whom God has guided. God would never have let your faith be in vain. God is Compassionate and Merciful to mankind. (Verses 142-143)

The Ranks of God’s Messengers Those are the Messengers! We have exalted some of them above others. To some God spoke directly, and some He raised in rank. We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear signs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Had God so willed, those who succeeded them would not have fought against one another after the clear proofs had come to them? But they differed with one another: some of them accepted the faith and some rejected it. Yet had God so willed, they would not have fought one another. But God does whatever He wills. (Verse 253)

The Truth about the Crucifixion “They did not kill him, and neither did they crucify him, but it only seemed to them [as if it had been] so. Those who hold conflicting views about him are indeed confused, having no real knowledge about it, and following mere conjecture. For, of a certainty, they did not kill him. No! God raised him up to Himself. God is indeed Almighty, Wise.” (Verses 157-158)

Truth and Falsehood in People’s Beliefs People of earlier revelations! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say about God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger from God and His Word which He gave to Mary and a soul from Him. So believe in God and His messengers and do not say, “[God is] a trinity!” Desist, for that will be better for you. God is only One God. Infinite He is in His Glory! [To imagine] that He may have a son! To Him belong all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth. Sufficient is God as a guardian. (Verse 171)

Was Jesus Too Proud? Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God’s servant, nor do the angels who are near to Him. Those who feel too proud to worship Him and glory in their arrogance will He gather all together before Him, (Verses 172)

The Origins of Enmity among the Christians “Likewise, from those who said, ‘We are Christians’, We have accepted a firm covenant, but they, too, have forgotten much of what they had been told to bear in mind. Therefore, We have given rise among them to enmity and hatred to last until the Day of Resurrection. God will make clear to them what they have done.” People of earlier revelations, Our Messenger has come to you to make clear to you much of what you have been concealing of the Scriptures, and to forgive you much. There has come to you from God a light and a clear Book, through which God guides those who seek His good pleasure to the paths of peace. By His grace, He leads them out of darkness into light and guides them to a straight way. (Verses 14-16)

False Claims Leading to Disbelief
Unbelievers indeed are they who say: “God is the Christ, son of Mary.” Say: Who could have prevailed with God in any way had it been His will to destroy the Christ, son of Mary, and his mother, and everyone on earth? To God belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them. He creates what He wills and God has power over all things. (Verse 17)

Now after an interval during which no messengers have appeared, Our Messenger has come to you to make things plain to you, lest you say: ‘No one has come to give us good news or to warn us.’ Now there has come to you a bearer of good news and a Warner. Clear Order and Perverse Response The Jews say: ‘Ezra is the son of God,’ while the Christians say: ‘The Christ is the son of God.’ Such are the assertions they utter with their mouths, echoing assertions made by the unbelievers of old. May God destroy them! How perverse they are! “They make of their rabbis and their monks, and of the Christ, son of Mary, lords besides God. Yet they have been ordered to worship none but the One God, other than whom there is no deity. Exalted is He above those to whom they ascribe divinity.” (Verse 30-31)

A True Promise
“They want to extinguish God’s light with their mouths, but God will not allow anything but bring His light to perfection, however hateful this may be to the unbelievers. (Verses 32) (9:32)

We sent other messengers to follow in their footsteps. After these We sent Jesus, son of Mary. We gave him the Gospel and put compassion and mercy in the hearts of those who truly follow him. As for monastic asceticism, We did not enjoin it upon them. They invented it themselves out of a desire for God’s goodly acceptance. Even so, they did not observe it as it should properly be observed. So We gave those of them who truly believed their due reward, but many of them were transgressors. (Verse 27)

Denounced Attitude
And also Jesus, the son of Mary, said: ‘Children of Israel! I am God’s messenger to you, [sent] to confirm the Torah revealed before me, and to give news of a Messenger that will come after me, whose name shall be Ahmed.’ (Verse 6)
ِ ُ ﺎل ِﻋﻴﺴﻰ اﺑﻦ ﻣﺮَﱘ ﻳﺎ ﺑ ِﲏ إِﺳﺮاﺋِﻴﻞ إِ ﱢﱐ رﺳ ٍ ي ِﻣﻦ اﻟﺘـﱠﻮر ِاة وﻣﺒﺸﱢﺮا ﺑِﺮﺳ ِ ﻮل ﻳَﺄِْﰐ َ ْ ﺼ ﱢﺪﻗًﺎ ﻟﱢ َﻤﺎ ﺑَـ َ ﻮل اﻟﻠﱠﻪ إِﻟَْﻴ ُﻜﻢ ﱡﻣ ُ َ ً َُ َ َ ْ َ ﲔ ﻳَ َﺪ ﱠ ُ َ َ َ ْ َ َ َ ْ َ ُ ْ َ َ ََوإ ْذ ﻗ ِ ِ ِ ُ َﲪَ ُﺪ ﻓَـﻠَ ﱠﻤﺎ ﺟ (61:6)◌ٌ ﺳﺤﺮ ﱡﻣﺒِﲔ ْ اﲰُﻪُ أ ْ ِﻣﻦ ﺑَـ ْﻌ ِﺪي َ ٌ ْ ﺎءﻫﻢ ﺑﺎﻟْﺒَـﻴﱢـﻨَﺎت ﻗَﺎﻟُﻮا َﻫ َﺬا

Denounced Attitude Believers! Be helpers [in the cause] of God; just as Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples: “Who will be my helpers in God’s cause? The disciples said: ‘We shall be [your] helpers in God’s cause.’ some of the Children of Israel came to believe whereas others denied the truth. But We have given those who believed strength over their enemy and they were the ones to prevail. (Verse 14)

Guidance and Light Given in the Gospel “We caused Jesus, the son of Mary, to follow in the footsteps of those (earlier prophets), confirming what had already been revealed before him in the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, containing guidance and light, confirming what had already been revealed before it in the Torah and giving guidance and admonition to the God-fearing. Let, then, the followers of the Gospel judge in accordance with what God has revealed therein. Those who do not judge in accordance with what God has revealed are indeed transgressors.” (Verses 46-47)

Alliances That Cannot Survive O Believers do not take the Jews and the Christians for your allies. They are allies of one another. Whoever of you allies himself with them is indeed one of them. God does not bestow His guidance on the wrongdoers. (Verses 51)

Finding Fault with Dedicated Believers Say: People of earlier revelations! Do you find fault with us for any reason other than that we believe in God [alone], and in that which has been revealed to us as well as that which has been revealed previously, while most of you are transgressors? (Verses 59)
ِ َﺎب ﻫﻞ ﺗَ ِﻨﻘﻤﻮ َن ِﻣﻨﱠﺎ إِﻻﱠ أَ ْن آﻣﻨﱠﺎ ﺑِﺎﻟﻠّ ِﻪ وﻣﺎ أُﻧ ِﺰَل إِﻟَﻴـﻨَﺎ وﻣﺎ أُﻧ ِﺰَل ِﻣﻦ ﻗَـﺒﻞ وأَ ﱠن أَ ْﻛﺜَـﺮُﻛﻢ ﻓ ِ ِ ﺎﺳ ُﻘﻮ َن ََ ْ ََ َ ْ َ َُْ ُ ْ َ َﻗُ ْﻞ ﻳَﺎ أ َْﻫ َﻞ اﻟْﻜﺘ

Advance Results of Implementing Divine Law If only the people of earlier revelations would believe and be God- fearing, We should indeed efface their [past] bad deeds, and bring them into gardens of bliss. If they would observe the Torah and the Gospel and all that has been revealed to them by their Lord, they would indeed be given abundance from above and from beneath. Some of them do pursue a right course, but many of them are of evil conduct. (Verses 65-66)
ِِ ِ ﻷدﺧ ْﻠﻨَﺎﻫﻢ ﺟﻨ ﱠﺎت اﻟﻨﱠﻌِﻴ ِﻢ َ ْ ُ َ ْ َوﻟَ ْﻮ أَ ﱠن أ َْﻫَ اﻟْﻜِﺘَﺎبِ آﻣَﻨُﻮاْ وَاﺗـﱠﻘَﻮْاْ ﻟَﻜَﻔﱠﺮْﻧَﺎ ﻋَﻨـْﻬُﻢْ ﺳَﻴﱢﺌَﺎﻬﺗ ْﻢ َو ِ َﻟَﻮْ أَﻧـﱠﻬُﻢْ أَﻗَﺎﻣُﻮاْ اﻟﺘـﱠﻮْرَاةَ وَاﻹِﳒِﻴﻞَ وَﻣَﺎ أُﻧﺰِلَ إِﻟَﻴﻬِﻢ ﻣﱢﻦ رﱠﻬ ﱢﺑِﻢ ﻷ َﻛﻠُﻮاْ ِﻣﻦ ﻓَـﻮﻗِ ِﻬﻢ وِﻣﻦ َْﲢ ٌﺖ أ َْر ُﺟﻠِ ِﻬﻢ ﱢﻣْﻨـ ُﻬ ْﻢ أُﱠﻣﺔ ْ َْ ْ ِ َﱡﻣ ْﻘﺘ (5:66) ن َ ﺼ َﺪةٌ َوَﻛﺜِﲑٌ ﱢﻣْﻨـ ُﻬ ْﻢ َﺳﺎء َﻣﺎ ﻳَـ ْﻌ َﻤﻠُﻮ (5:65)

A Vital Proclamation to Deliver God’s Message Say: People of earlier revelations! You have no ground to stand upon unless you observe the Torah and the Gospel and that which has been revealed to you by your Lord. That which is revealed to you by your Lord is bound to make many of them even more stubborn in their arrogance and disbelief. But do not grieve for unbelieving folk. (Verses 68)
ِ ﺎب ﻟَﺴﺘُﻢ ﻋﻠَﻰ َﺷﻲ ٍء ﺣ ﱠﱴ ﺗُِﻘﻴﻤﻮاْ اﻟﺘـﱠﻮراةَ وا ِﻹ ِ ﻳﺪ ﱠن َﻛﺜِ ًﲑا ﳒ َ ﻴﻞ َوَﻣﺎ أُﻧ ِﺰَل إِﻟَْﻴ ُﻜﻢ ﱢﻣﻦ ﱠرﺑﱢ ُﻜ ْﻢ َوﻟَﻴَ ِﺰ َ ْ ْ ِ َﻗُ ْﻞ ﻳَﺎ أ َْﻫ َﻞ اﻟْﻜﺘ َ َ َْ ُ َ َ ْ ِ ِ (5:68)ﻜﺎﻓ ِﺮﻳﻦ َ ﻚ ِﻣﻦ ﱠرﺑﱢ َ ﱢﻣْﻨـ ُﻬﻢ ﱠﻣﺎ أُﻧ ِﺰَل إِﻟَْﻴ َ َ ْس َﻋﻠَﻰ اﻟْ َﻘ ْﻮم اﻟ َ ْﻚ ﻃُ ْﻐﻴَﺎﻧًﺎ َوُﻛ ْﻔًﺮا ﻓَﻼَ ﺗَﺄ

Misconceptions Leading to Disbelief Unbelievers indeed are those who say: “God is the Christ, son of Mary.” The Christ himself said: Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord. Whoever associates partners with God, God shall forbid him entrance into Paradise and his abode will be the Fire. Wrongdoers will have no helpers. Unbelievers indeed are those who say: “God is the third of a trinity.” Of certain, there is no god save the One God. Unless they desist from so saying, grievous suffering will surely befall those of them who are unbelievers. Will they not, then, turn to God in repentance and seek His forgiveness? God is Much-Forgiving, Merciful. The Christ, son of Mary, was but a Messenger: other messengers have passed away before him. His mother was a saintly woman. They both ate food [like other human beings]. Behold how clear We make [Our] revelations to them and behold how perverted they are. Say: Would you worship in place of God anything that has no power to harm or to benefit you? It is God alone who hears all and knows all. Say: People of earlier revelations! Do not overstep the bounds of truth in your religious beliefs, and do not follow the vain desires of those who have gone astray in the past, and have led many others astray and are still straying from the right path. Those of the Children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by David and Jesus, son of Mary. That was because they rebelled and persisted in their transgression. (Verses 7278)

Who Hates the Believers Most? “You will certainly find that, of all people, the most hostile to those who believe are the Jews, and those who associate partners with God.” “And you will certainly find that the nearest of them in affection to the believers are those who say, `We are Christians.’ This is so because there are priests and monks among them and because they are not given to arrogance.” (Verse 82)
ِﱠ ِ ِ ِ ﱠﺎس ﻋ َﺪاوًة ﻟﱢﻠﱠ ِﺬﻳﻦ آﻣﻨﻮاْ اﻟْﻴـﻬ ﱠ ِ ﻳﻦ ﻗَﺎﻟَُﻮاْ إِﻧﱠﺎ َ ﻟَﺘَﺠ َﺪ ﱠن أ َ ُ َ َُ َ َ َ ِ َﺷ ﱠﺪ اﻟﻨ َ ﻳﻦ َآﻣﻨُﻮاْ اﻟﺬ َ ﻳﻦ أَ ْﺷَﺮُﻛﻮاْ َوﻟَﺘَﺠ َﺪ ﱠن أَﻗْـَﺮﺑَـ ُﻬ ْﻢ ﱠﻣ َﻮﱠد ًة ﻟﱢﻠﱠﺬ َ ﻮد َواﻟﺬ ِ ِ ِ َ ِﻧَﺼﺎرى ذَﻟ (5:82)ن َ ﲔ َوُرْﻫﺒَﺎﻧًﺎ َوأَﻧـﱠ ُﻬ ْﻢ ﻻَ ﻳَ ْﺴﺘَ ْﻜِﱪُو َ ﻚ ﺑِﺄَ ﱠن ﻣْﻨـ ُﻬ ْﻢ ﻗ ﱢﺴﻴﺴ ََ

A Hard Confrontation God will say: ‘Jesus, son of Mary! Remember the blessings which I bestowed on you and your mother: how I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit, so that you could speak to people in your cradle, and as a grown man; how I instructed you in the Book and in wisdom, in the Torah and in the Gospel; how, by My leave, you fashioned from clay the figure of a bird and breathed into it so that, by My leave, it became a living bird; how, by My leave, you healed the blind man and the leper, and, by My leave, restored the dead to life; how I prevented the Children of Israel from harming you when you came to them with all evidence of the truth: when those of them who disbelieved declared: ‘This is plain sorcery.’ And when I inspired the disciples to have faith in Me and in My Messenger; they said: ‘We believe; and bear you witness that we have surrendered ourselves [to God].” (Verses 110-111)
ِ ﱠﺎس ِﰲ اﻟْ َﻤ ْﻬ ِﺪ ِ ﱡﻚ ﺑُِﺮ َ ﻚ إِ ْذ أَﻳﱠﺪﺗ َ ِﻚ َو َﻋﻠَﻰ َواﻟ َﺪﺗ َ إِ ْذ ﻗَ َﺎل اﻟﻠّﻪُ ﻳَﺎ ِﻋﻴﺴﻰ اﺑْ َﻦ َﻣ ْﺮَﱘَ اذْ ُﻛ ْﺮ ﻧِ ْﻌ َﻤ ِﱵ َﻋﻠَْﻴ َ وح اﻟْ ُﻘ ُﺪ ِس ﺗُ َﻜﻠﱢ ُﻢ اﻟﻨ ِ َ ُوَﻛﻬﻼً وإِ ْذ ﻋﻠﱠﻤﺘ ِ اﳊِ ْﻜﻤﺔَ واﻟﺘـﱠﻮراةَ وا ِﻹ ِﳒﻴﻞ وإِ ْذ َﲣْﻠُ ُﻖ ِﻣﻦ اﻟﻄﱢ ﲔ َﻛ َﻬْﻴﺌَ ِﺔ اﻟﻄﱠِْﲑ ﺑِِﺈ ْذِﱐ ﻓَـﺘَﻨ ُﻔ ُﺦ ﻓِ َﻴﻬﺎ ﻓَـﺘَ ُﻜﻮ ُن ﻃَْﻴـًﺮا َ َﻚ اﻟْﻜﺘ َْ َ َْ َ َ َ َ ْ َ َ ْ ﺎب َو َ ِ َﻨﻚ إِ ْذ ِﺟْﺌﺘَـﻬﻢ ﺑِﺎﻟْﺒـﻴﱢـﻨ ِ ِ ِ ِِ ﺑِِﺈ ْذِﱐ وﺗُـ ِْﱪىء اﻷَ ْﻛﻤﻪَ واﻷَﺑْـﺮ ﺎت َ ﻴﻞ َﻋ ُ ِج اﻟْ َﻤﻮﺗَﻰ ﺑِِﺈ ْذِﱐ َوإِ ْذ َﻛ َﻔ ْﻔ َ ُْ َ َ َ َ ُ َ ُ ص ﺑﺈ ْذِﱐ َوإ ْذ ُﲣْﺮ َ ﺖ ﺑَِﲏ إ ْﺳَﺮاﺋ ِﱠ ِ ِ (5:110)ﻣﺒِﲔ ٌ ﻳﻦ َﻛ َﻔُﺮواْ ﻣْﻨـ ُﻬ ْﻢ إِ ْن َﻫـ َﺬا إِﻻﱠ ﺳ ْﺤٌﺮ ﱡ َ ﻓَـ َﻘ َﺎل اﻟﺬ (5:111)

Favors Granted to Jesus’ Followers The disciples said: “Jesus, son of Mary! Can your Lord send down to us a repast from heaven?” He answered: “Fear God, if you are truly believers.” Said they: “We desire to eat of it, so that our hearts are reassured and that we know that you have spoken the truth to us, and that we may be witness of it.” “God, our Lord,” said Jesus, son of Mary, “send down upon us a repast from heaven: it shall be an ever- recurring feast for us — for the first and the last of us — and a sign from You. And provide us our sustenance, for You are the best provider” God replied: ‘I am sending it down to you. But whoever of you disbelieves after this, I shall inflict on him suffering the like of which I have not inflicted on anyone in the world.” (Verses 112-115)

Did Jesus Claim Divinity? And God will say: Jesus, son of Mary! Did you say to people, ‘Worship me and my mother as deities beside God? ” [Jesus] answered: “Limitless are You in Your glory! I could never have claimed what I have no right to [say]! Had I said this, You would certainly have known it. You know all that is within me whereas I do not know what is in yourself. Most certainly, it is You alone who fully knows all that lies beyond the reach of human perception. Nothing did I tell them beyond what You bade me [to say]: `Worship God, who is my Lord and your Lord.’ I was witness to what they did as long as I lived in their midst. Then when You took me to Yourself, You have been watching over them. You are indeed a witness to all things. If You punish them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, You are indeed Almighty, Wise.” (Verses 116-118)
