PREPARATIONS LECTURE: “Measuring Space” (1hr)

SEMINAR (2HR) Your design tutor will present three chosen objects in your first tutorial and will discuss the relation of each object to the different material systems introduced in the lecture.
(12 hrs - individual)
1.1 Choose one of the objects presented in this weeks tutorial. Scan or photocopy the object, overlay with trace paper and using a scale ruler produce a measured drawing set; plan, section, and elevation of the object OR produce one isometric drawing of the object using the grid template provided. Add key dimensions to drawings. Read 300 years of Industrial Design/Jensen and descibe how you measured your object. Refer to research link on LMS for completed example and Ching and Yee reference readings as required. (3.5h) 1.2 Read How to layout a croissant/Miralles Action this through your drawing. Abstract the rule or material logic in the found object. Explain this in sketches and drawings (2h)

Save as a PDF presentation and upload to your blog page. Review InDesign tutorials as needed on the LMS or sign up to the Adobe Tech session to be held in Wk 2. (3 h)

WORKSHOP 1: MAKING(1hr) The aim of the workshop is for you to experience making your material system. In this workshop students will explore their material system and consider how this can create volume and space. Your task following the workshop is to re-configure your own material system to create a self supporting structure that contains or describes a volume; maximum size 500mm x 500mm x 500mm. You can use the technique explored in the workshop as well as drawing inspiration from your object.
1.7 Learning from the workshop, students will reconfigure their given object using the object itself or new material to describe/ explore a volume. Produce one model that is self supporting . (refer to LMS research link for examples)(3h) 1.8 Read Personal Spaces/Sommer. Taking inspiration from the reading and the material model you produced in 1.7, explore 3 sketch designs idea of your second skin. Diagram the concept using the provided template (download from LMS) You should consider how your material system allows you to produce an envelope to show or defend your personal space. (3h) 1.9 Produce your Module One student journal. Incorporate this weeks tasks along with tasks from Wk1 into an A4 landscape presentation using the module journal template format. If necessary reformat/edit the presentation to describe your idea development. Export file as a PDF and upload to ISSUU. Embed the link to your groups blog. (1h)
