Digital Design + Fabrication BRIEF: Second Skin The brief calls for innovative design of a second skin; a

design critera

material systems

The second skin project must address the following design criteria:

During this semester, we will explore the following material systems:

1.

volume or surface that uses the body as it’s site/ landscape. The second skin will explore, measure, and/or negotiate the

2.

The second skin must explore the nature and boundries of personal space.

3.

The design must create a sensoral effect (Kinetic, Spatial, Aural, Lighting, Emotional) These effects will be showcased in a 30 second video performance at the end of semester.

Volume; project must address the 3 dimensionality and the volumetric nature of the body. The design must create an envelope or volume using developable surfaces; a twodimensional solution is not acceptable.

4.

The final object must be fabricated with care and well crafted.

5.

Material choice is up to you. Paper, fabric, ready made objects, plastics, timbers, metals – all materials must be negotiated with your design tutor.

Your design tutor will present to you with an object created with each of these systems in your first tutorial. You are to choose one to analyse, this will be the material system you will work with this semester.

Note: Each tutorial group will have a different sets of objects

WEEKLY TASKS

PREPARATIONS LECTURE: “Measuring Space” (1hr)

Purchase, download and install all required software and purchase items on the required materials list (See required resources on the LMS)

Lecture covers course content and design brief, representation, rule systems in material and nature, geometry and Rhino modelling +

Create a blog entry in your tutorial group, include a photograph of yourself and some introductory information. (See Tutorial Groups on the LMS)

examples of measured drawings

SEMINAR (2HR) Your design tutor will present three chosen objects in your first tutorial and will discuss the relation of each object to the different material systems introduced in the lecture.

(12 hrs - individual)

1.1 Choose one of the objects presented in this weeks tutorial. Scan or photocopy the object, overlay with trace paper and using a scale ruler produce a measured drawing set; plan, section, and elevation of the object OR produce one isometric drawing of the object using the grid template provided. Add key dimensions to drawings. Read 300 years of Industrial Design/Jensen and descibe how you measured your object. Refer to research link on LMS for completed example and Ching and Yee reference readings as required. (3.5h) 1.2 Read How to layout a croissant/Miralles Action this through your drawing. Abstract the rule or material logic in the found object. Explain this in sketches and drawings (2h)

Measured Drawing of an Umbrella

Tutors will demonstrate measured drawings and identifie reference resources on orthographic drawing. Tutor will present the readings and task 1.2

Introduction to Module Journal Template. There are optional Adobe tech workshops running in Wk 3. Schedule groups for weekly reading presentations: Wk2 presentation will be on Jensen - 300 years of Industrial Design (2000) Sketches of Hinge Logic of Umbrella

A measured drawing set; plan, section, and elevation OR one isometric drawing of the object. Dimensioned and annotated

Description of how you measured your object following the examples given in the reading

Analytical sketches/drawings of chosen object following the example given in the reading

1.3 Read Inside Rhinoceros/Cheng Complete Intro Rhino Webinar Tutorials (See LMS under Module 1). Follow along and upload screen grabs of completed exercises to the group blog (2.5h) 1.4 Scan your drawings and layout your images using the Module journal template. Add text. Save as a PDF presentation and upload to your blog page. Review InDesign tutorials as needed on the LMS or sign up to the Adobe Tech session to be held in Wk 2. (3 h)

You will recive an introduction to the LMS and blog tools. Demo example blogs and how to use ISSUU for submissions.

LECTURE: “Material Systems” (1hr) Lecture 2 covers the three categories of material systems, geometry of surface and volumes and transformation operations + what is sketch design

1.5 Digitally model the object from the measured drawings in Rhino. Review Rhino tutorial http://vimeo.com/49953944 as an example approach to modeling from orthographic images. Watch additional Rhino Webinar tutorials (on the LMS) as needed. (3h)

SEMINAR (2HR) Review of Wk 1 tasks and reading presentation. Intro to the Sketch Design template (45 mins) Reminder that optional Adobe workshop will also be held next week - sign up on LMS. WORKSHOP 1: MAKING (1hr 15)

2nd Skin, Hao Cheng Huang

WORKSHOP 1: MAKING(1hr) The aim of the workshop is for you to experience making your material system. In this workshop students will explore their material system and consider how this can create volume and space. Your task following the workshop is to re-configure your own material system to create a self supporting structure that contains or describes a volume; maximum size 500mm x 500mm x 500mm. You can use the technique explored in the workshop as well as drawing inspiration from your object.

1.7 Learning from the workshop, students will reconfigure their given object using the object itself or new material to describe/ explore a volume. Produce one model that is self supporting . (refer to LMS research link for examples)(3h) 1.8 Read Personal Spaces/Sommer. Taking inspiration from the reading and the material model you produced in 1.7, explore 3 sketch designs idea of your second skin. Diagram the concept using the provided template (download from LMS) You should consider how your material system allows you to produce an envelope to show or defend your personal space. (3h) 1.9 Produce your Module One student journal. Incorporate this weeks tasks along with tasks from Wk1 into an A4 landscape presentation using the module journal template format. If necessary reformat/edit the presentation to describe your idea development. Export file as a PDF and upload to ISSUU. Embed the link to your groups blog. (1h)

SUBMIT: Printout of your Module One Student Journal ready to be pinned up for review at start of Wk 3 tutorial. Electronic copy uploaded to group blog. Both electronic and hard copy submissions are required. Student must submit and present ideas in person during tutorial or your assignment will not be marked 4
