MHA General Surgeon Accepting Referrals Dr. Vipan Jain performs colonoscopy and endoscopy procedures as his full general surgery practice, specializing in Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques. SMGH Wait times for oncology breast, colorectal, digestive-gallbladder and hernia procedures are significantly shorter, by one to three months for the majority of patients (90th%ile), depending on the type of surgery. Surgeon and Provincial wait time targets are shorter and patient priority is higher with a possible diagnosis of cancer.

Diabetes Education Centre The Diabetes Education Centre (DEC) of the Middlesex Hospital Alliance serves a rural catchment area; the prevalence rate for the area ranges from lower to greater than the provincial rate of 8.3. An estimate of the number of people with diabetes in our service area is 5760-7040 based on a catchment population of 80,000 and 7.2 and 8.8 rates in LHIN 1 and 2 respectively; along with a prevalence of 8%. Potential undiagnosed diabetes is approximately 4000 when calculated at 5%. DEC currently employs 9 certified diabetes educators, teams of dietitians and nurses, who offer individual counselling and group classes. Diabetes classes are held at both hospital sites as well as some off site clinics. Satellite clinic locations include the Strathroy Medical Clinic, Strathroy Family Health Organization, Southwest Middlesex Health Centre, Thamesville Medial Clinic, Dutton Medical Clinic, Ilderton Medical Clinic, Moraviantown Health Centre, Babcock Nursing Home, Search Mental Health Services, and Middlesex Community Living. DEC sees patients within 2 weeks of referral. Classes cover label reading, CHO counting, diabetes medications, physical activity, food demonstrations, weight control, walking groups and more. As a result of building partnerships and patient referrals, attendance to program classes has increased as demonstrated: 2005/06
