(2011) — Each year, Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) recognizes outstanding part-time faculty for their contributions to teaching and learning – one of MHCC’s core values, along with community engagement and resource development. Yoko Sato is a part-time instructor of Japanese who has been serving the College for more than 15 years. Comments from her students and peers describe her “high level of professionalism, dedication to students and teaching, collegiality, intelligence and hard work.” Another comment lauds Sato as an “outstanding instructor whose careful lesson preparedness, patience, kindness toward students and effective explanations make her a stand-out.” Besides her numerous accomplishments in the classroom, Sato has worked hard to build MHCC’s study abroad program in Japan. MHCC Dean of Humanities, Eric Tschuy, credits her with growing the program and building valuable relationships with faculty at MHCC’s sister college in Kyoto, Japan. Erika Hoffmeister Ruhl is in her sixth year at MHCC an now teaches a relatively new program that prepares students for careers in video game development. Hoffmeister Ruhl’s educational background, along with her experience in the local game industry, make her a perfect fit to teach the College’s 3D graphics class. But it is far more than her content knowledge and background that make her an outstanding instructor: She is a driving force in creating curriculum for the degree and makes the course material relevant within the game industry.
