MHCC Recognizes Outstanding Support Staff (2012) — Each year, Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) employees select three colleagues to receive the Outstanding Support Staff Award. This award recognizes those who demonstrate dedication, professionalism, leadership and enthusiasm in their work at the College and within the community. The winners of the 2012 Outstanding Support Staff Award are Eric Manarang, Arnita Tucker-McFarland and Paula Wilson. On the pretense that Michael Hay, MHCC president, needed some assistance in his office, Manarang, from the custodial staff, looked stunned when he arrived to the cheers of his many fans with whom he works at the College. The award recognizes Manarang for his natural leadership abilities, competence, strength of character and excellent communications skills. Hay presented him with balloons and a chocolate cake inscribed, “Eric is a Winner!” Tucker-McFarland, workforce development specialist, received the good news while in a staff meeting at Worksource East, to the delight and cheers of her co-workers. Tucker-McFarland visits worksites that are laying off workers and counsels them about training, job searches and offers help through Worksource East and MHCC. She
created a series of workshops to help workers stay engaged, motivated and develop their networking skills. A colleague submitted the following about Tucker-McFarland: “Our work here can be stressful. All day long we see people who are unemployed and worried. Arnita not only provides exceptional and compassionate customer service, but she encourages and inspires all of us to do the same.” The Outstanding Support Staff selection committee unanimously chose Wilson, administrative assistant for the Nursing program at The Bruning Center for Allied Health Education, based on her relationships with students and employees. “Paula is always calm and patient in the most challenging times,” they wrote, “and she goes out of her way to help even when she is buried!” Numerous students recalled how they looked to Wilson for encouragement, guidance and support because “she wants us to succeed.” The MHCC District Board of Education recognized Manarang, Tucker-McFarland and Wilson at the February board meeting. The MHCC Foundation will provide a $500 check for their excellent service to the College and recognize them at the March board meeting.
