2021 ANNUAL REPORT 1
CREATING MOMENTUM FROM A MOMENT IN TIME “The future is completely open and we are writing it moment to moment.” -Pema Chodron
The new environment has challenged us all. While unrelenting change can take a toll on our bodies, minds, and spirit, it also presents an opportunity to look at things differently. The magnetic pull of change is a unique moment in time that opens a door for true momentum to take hold. At Mental Health Connecticut (MHC), we are thinking, and rethinking, how to best meet the needs of the individuals and communities we serve. We are winning awards and accolades for our innovative work and persistence. We are building systems and pathways to keep a line of sight on addressing the Social Determinants of Health. We are becoming detectives of everything around us, sliding once-accepted norms under the microscope to examine and deconstruct what we once knew to be true. In parallel to stepping into new ways of being and approaching our work, our values and beliefs help us stay the course. Ensuring safety in our programs, in our conversation, and in our actions, has become the throughline for everything we do. Now, more than ever, we are spending less time convincing businesses, legislators, families, municipalities, academia, and members from all areas of our community to make mental wellness a priority. The conversation has solidly shifted to “how,” not “why,” and we are grateful for the shift. A foundation of 113 years of creating environments that support long-term health and wellness allows us to continue to evolve and expand our reach. MHC’s ability to serve Connecticut is only possible through the support of dedicated individuals. Together, it’s our staff, partners, volunteers, funders, families, and community that make the difference by doing their part to keep mental wellness as a goal for all. We are grateful for your support and partnership.

HIGHLIGHTS FY 2020-2021
PLATINUM LEVEL CERTIFICATION RECEIVED FOR THE BELL SEAL This year, MHC was awarded a Platinum level rating, the highest offered, for Mental Health America’s Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health. The Bell Seal is a certification that recognizes employers of any size and industry who strive to create mentally healthy workplaces for their employees. The rigorous evaluation is now a part of MHC’s new initiative, The MHC Collaborative. Read the full blog post here.
NEW DONOR LAUNCHES #TOURFORLIFE CONCERT SERIES Local musician Kenny Mercer approached MHC in 2019 with his vision of producing a concert series featuring hip-hop and punk artists from across the country. Kenny wanted to honor his close friend Alex Jamieson, who had died by suicide, by bringing the community together in a big way. Even though plans were stalled during the Coronavirus pandemic, Kenny didn’t slow down, raising funds and holding pop-up shows and mini events when he could. The #TourforLife 4-day traveling concert that was eventually held in August 2021 was so successful, Kenny has decided to make it an annual event! Read the full blog post here.
FUNDER SHOUT OUT: MACY’S GIVES Thanks to generous support from Macy’s, MHC has expanded its Write On!, Employment, and Homeless Diversion programs. Thanks to Macy’s we have been able to help participants secure housing and transportation, and purchase home appliances and clothing that they otherwise would not be able to afford. A participant that has been with MHC for some time and who recently started living at BLOOM House in Waterbury recently received gift cards to help purchase items of clothing for a job search. He was able to work with an employment specialist and gain employment opportunities because of this. Staff also continue to assess and work with participants as the need arises to get them ready for job interviews.

RECOGNITION AT MENTAL HEALTH AMERICA’S 2021 ANNUAL CONFERENCE In June 2021, MHC staff attended and received recognition at Mental Health America’s 2021 Annual Conference, “From Resiliency to Recovery.” MHC’s homeless outreach team received the 2021 “Innovation in Programming Award” for accelerating the process of connecting unhoused individuals to the services and support they need to defeat homelessness. The award is the result of MHC’s IT services and program teams working with Connecticut’s Department of Housing (DOH), Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), and 2-1-1 call center/info-line to create a system that will serve as the model across the state.
Three of MHC staff were selected to present at MHC’s affiliate pre-conference. DEI & Engagement Coordinator, Jackie Davis, presented, “Turning Ideas into Action: MHC’s Equity, Social Justice & Antiracism Advisory Committee.” Chelsea Thornton, Organizational Performance Manager, presented, “How Business Intelligence Paves the Way to Success.” Suzi Craig, Chief Strategy Officer, co-presented, “Workplace Mental Health: Best Practices in Practices” alongside MHA’s Director of Workplace Mental Health, Taylor Adams. Read the full blog post here.
OUR COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL JUSTICE CONTINUES MHC created the DEI & Engagement Coordinator position to ensure our internal efforts to cultural humility and equity continue. MHC’s Equity, Social Justice & Antiracism (ESJA) Advisory Committee, created in 2020, continued its efforts to identify and create solution-based recommendations to improve our work culture through social justice, cultural humility, and equity for staff, program participants, and the communities we serve. The committee educates themselves and staff through a monthly collaborative learning series, encouraging a productive dialogue among staff that allows for safe and brave spaces to be part of the MHC work environment.
ADVOCATING FOR ACCESS AND PARITY With the 2021 legislative session completely virtual, public hearings and advocacy happened from home offices across the state. MHC staff, board members, and program participants testified in over 25 public hearings, advocating for the rights of individuals and calling for much-needed funding to support our frontline staff. MHC also joined many others in the Peer Support Work Group to elevate the importance of creating pathways for recovery support specialists, continued efforts to close the gap on the health insurance parity, and launched a research effort that is studying the impact of systemic racism on access and recovery services in behavioral health.

MOMENTUM IN OUR PROGRAMS
The virtual world has helped MHC expand our thinking on program delivery and outreach. Here are some highlights: With the help of grants from the United Way, the Connecticut Community Foundation, and Creating Healthier Communities, MHC’s Independence Center (IC) in Waterbury continued its food delivery program into 2021. Since the inception of the program in April 2020, IC staff have shopped for, prepared, packaged, and delivered 21,347 meals, 8,477 snacks, and 1,338 food bank bags to IC members! When the IC reopened for in-person programming and meals, members shared with our IC staff that having access to wholesome, nutritious food made a big difference in their health. For that reason, the IC now continues the meal delivery plan for certain holidays and celebrations. See a video of MHC delivering food to our members here.
During the thick of the pandemic in 2020, MHC expanded its community education programming to support the staff of many organizations from across industries. The work led to the creation of a dedicated effort, “The MHC Collaborative.” Through The MHC Collaborative, we are equipping the Connecticut workforce with the tools they need to create a mentally fit, thriving work environment. MHC is bringing the content expertise of our frontline, training, HR, and organization teams together with MHA’s Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health to help employers expand on efforts to make mental health a priority. We aim to help employers prevent stress and workplace fatigue, improve employee engagement, lower health care costs, and increase access to services.
Our Mending Art program has continued to reach individuals and artists across the state. Classes continued remotely and staff have settled in to their new home base at Five Points Art Center in Torrington. MHC’s Mending Art Artists were spotlighted as the Emerging Artists for the Torrington

Civil Rights Mural, a part of “MLK39: Racial Equity Mural Tour,” which aims to install 39 murals across Connecticut, one honoring each year of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life. Mending Art members also attended the first ever Litchfield Hills Creative Festival in 2021, as well as attending many other outdoor community events. Learn more about Mending Art here.
Our Write On! program has broadened its program to accommodate for virtual learning. The shift to the online world has allowed us to expand offerings, begin building a train the trainer model, and reach more individuals. Program participants living in MHC’s residential programs across the state joined Write On! cohorts and alumni groups. We created the “Discovering Your Inner Writer” as an online course for direct-to-consumer purchase, and for educators to incorporate in their classrooms.Custom Write On! webinars and workshops were also offered. Learn more about Write On! here.
The GROW program continues to serve program participants through many different opportunities at MHC’s residential facilities, as well as the Independent Center in Waterbury. At three greenhouses in Bridgeport, Danbury, and Stamford, and a large garden in Torrington, program participants assist with planting and maintenance. Our yields increased significantly this year, allowing us to provide program participants with fresh vegetables and herbs, as well as sell to local residents at the Torrington’s farmer’s market. During the late fall and winter months, we sent over 40 kits per week to MHC residential facilities, with activities such as: creating bird feeders, painting vases, planting seeds, using recyclables for planting, and much more! Discover more about GROW here.

MOMENTUM IN OUR PROGRAMS As a part of the Waterbury-Litchfield Coordinated Access Network (CAN), MHC assesses the housing needs of all individuals experiencing housing insecurity through a technology tree that removes the barriers of an inperson intake process. The result is increased numbers of individuals and families obtaining everything needed to get housed, and during unprecedented times. As the COVID-19 Assistance for Community Health (COACH) program location for Fairfield County and Northwestern CT, our team provided support to 2,380 people. The need was so great, “COACH 2.0” was created and continues to effectively assist those in need with community/statewide resources, recovery supports, substance use treatment, mental health treatment, housing resources, social supports, and transportation resources. A new initiative, Connecticut Housing Engagement and Support Services (CHESS) covers supportive housing benefits under Medicaid by combining both Medicaid services and nonMedicaid housing subsidies. Learn how MHC is addressing housing insecurity here.
Our Information & Referral line continues to assist residents across the state for a variety of inquiries. We received calls or emails daily, resulting in multiple referrals. Over 63% of inquiries were for individuals seeking information on available community services and support. Other frequent inquiries included individuals and families seeking information on Connecticut’s Mental Health Waiver Program (which provides extensive options for Medicaid beneficiaries to live in the community and avoid institutional care), support groups, advocacy support, and housing assistance.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT:
CONNECTICARE HELPS MHC RAISE OVER $72,000 FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH During Mental Health Awareness Month in May, ConnectiCare, a leading health plan in Connecticut for 40 years, signed on as MHC’s primary sponsor of MHC’s #31DaysofWellness Campaign and helped us to double the impact of the $31,000 fundraising goal. As a longtime partner of MHC, ConnectiCare chose to support the campaign in celebration of its 40th anniversary and its ongoing commitment to creating healthier futures for Connecticut residents. With the generosity of ConnectiCare as our Double the Impact Sponsor, the support of 17 community fundraisers (totaling hundreds of donations), and 8 corporate sponsors, this year’s #31DaysofWellness campaign totaled $72,446 in 31 days! “We’ve been giving back to the community since we were founded 40 years ago; that sense of service is who we are as a company. We decided to celebrate our anniversary by focusing our support where it’s needed most as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and mental health is a top priority. We’re delighted to help further MHC’s fundraising during the #31DaysOfWellness campaign,” said Eric Galvin, President, ConnectiCare. The money raised helped launch the MHC@Home Fund to support MHC’s residential facilities throughout Connecticut. As a CARF-Accredited organization, MHC sets and maintains high standards of care for the appearance, function, and warmth of our residential facilities, which are also MHC’s second highest expense. To show our gratitude for their support, members of Mental Health Connecticut (MHC) joined our friends at ConnectiCare and unveiled a custom-made handcrafted Tiki complete with a dedication plaque. The gift was created by Senan Gorman, a local artist who creates wooden sculptures to support charities and other local groups through his organization, Tiki Task Force.

VISION We envision a future where wellbeing is rooted in respect for the condition of being human.
MISSION Mental Health Connecticut partners with individuals, families, and communities to create environments that support long-term health and wellness.
VALUES Safety
Respect
Trust
Support
Accountability
PHILOSOPHY In our world, “environment” has many meanings, from creating a welcoming, safe, physical place to making room in a conversation for others to be seen and heard. We see amazing possibilities realized when an individual is supported for who they are and how they see the world, instead of the diagnosis or limitations that can become so intricately tied to someone’s identity.
