The unveiling of the Chelsea
GLORIOUS GARDENS BY RANDLE SIDDELEY IN FULL BLOOM AT CHELSEA WATERFRONT
With summer in full swing, the beautiful landscaped gardens at Chelsea Waterfront are now in bloom, providing a green sanctuary on the river banks of west London. The unveiling of the gardens coincides with the reopening of the sales and marketing suite at the landmark residential development by Hutchison Property Group. Chelsea Waterfront, designed by internationally renowned architect Sir Terry Farrell, overlooks a part of the River Thames which was previously inaccessible. The luxury development comprises 10 buildings including a 37 storey tower, the tallest residential building in SW10, a 25 storey tower and the conversion of the historic Lots Road Power Station, which powered the London Underground for almost a century.
Chelsea Flower Show Inspiration
The gardens at Chelsea Waterfront are inspired by the works of the annual Chelsea Flower Show and Chelsea Physic Gardens. Acclaimed landscape practice, Randle Siddeley, combined creative flair for a classic yet contemporary landscape. Water gardens are seamlessly connected by three stunning bridges over the creek, while green space and planting create an oasis of nature with breath-taking views along the river to Battersea and Chelsea Bridge.
Landscaping to reconnect the local community
The landscaping forms a procession of public spaces that celebrates the historic power station and the scheme’s unique location beside Chelsea Creek, whilst reconnecting the local community to the previously inaccessible section of the River Thames. From the entrance on Chelsea Harbour Drive a tree lined promenade leads through to a central park that overlooks the power station façade. Several routes from the park lead to the water gardens that include serene water features, discrete seating areas and an elevated open lawn that provides panoramic views of the river. Generous stone steps lead from the water gardens down to the riverside pathway and provide informal places for sitting and watching the river in the sun.
Planting influenced by water
The palette of the planting was influenced by the scheme’s proximity to water, with intertidal terraces planted with reeds and black alder forming an avenue along the Creekside promenade. As an ode to the site’s industrial heritage, the tree species gleam with autumnal rust and sit alongside tulip trees planted adjacent to the central park and China trees planted within the water gardens. Structure is created in the planting beds with native shrubs as well as clipped hedges, which are synonymous with the public spaces of Chelsea. Between these structural forms, herbaceous species are interspersed with grasses and hardy groundcovers, creating a naturalistic character that provides year round colour and encourages wildlife. Herbaceous species include several varieties of sage, coneflower, scabious and ornamental grasses such as feather reed grass and tufted hair grass.
The Lord Kenilworth, Chairman of Randle Siddeley, said: “At Randle Siddeley we are immensely proud of how the landscape is maturing at Chelsea Waterfront. When we originally designed the gardens we wanted to create spaces that were not only visually beautiful and inviting for residents, but also responded to the context of the site.
We were particularly inspired by the scheme’s unique location on the River Thames and its location in the heart of Chelsea. Planting throughout the site reflects this from the neat, clipped hedges commonly associated with Chelsea to the serene water features and aquatic planting. Having been involved in the project for over 20 years, it is wonderful to see it come to fruition each summer and it only gets better year on year”.
Marketing suite returns Hutchinson Property Group have also re-opened the doors to its marketing suite offering prospective buyers the chance to book appointments to view the completed two, three and four bedroom apartments available within Tower West, the tallest of the two glass buildings. A number of the homes available also have their own private garden. Residents benefit from a wealth of amenities including 24 hour concierge, underground car parking and a health and fitness club complete with swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gymnasium and spa treatment rooms.
