Industry News Hyster® lift truck series earns 2014 Silver Product of the Year award Hyster Company announces its Fortis® S80-120FT lift truck series has won a 2014 Silver Product of the Year award from Plant Engineering in the material handling systems category. The series was selected for its ability to boost performance and reduce downtime in heavy duty applications. While Plant Engineering’s editorial staff oversees the nomination process, the final award recipients are determined based on voting from the magazine’s readers. The Fortis® S80-120FT lift truck series offers features designed to increase engine cooling capabilities and productivity, allowing customers extended runtimes and superior dependability. The optional on-demand cooling system helps boost performance and nearly eliminates the likelihood of engine overheating. It matches cooling fan speed directly to engine temperatures, regardless of engine speed, while allowing more cooling at idle speed to maintain proper engine and transmission temperatures. When the need for cooling is low, the fan speed reduces significantly, even at wide-open engine throttle, allowing trucks to run an entire shift without having to stop and cool off. The cooling fan significantly extends radiator cleaning intervals, and with proper truck and facility upkeep, can reduce the need to clean debris from the radiator and under hood

areas. The cooling fan deploys automatic reversal cycles every 20 minutes, preventing radiator buildup and reducing cleaning frequency, which can result in higher productivity and a higher return on investment. To enhance oil flow, the on-demand hydraulic system featuring a variable displacement pump is available. This system supplies the right amount of oil as needed, reducing fuel consumption by up to 22%. The series includes a Kubota 3.8L spark ignited LPG powertrain designed for tough applications with high load duty cycles. An advanced feature that comes standard with the engine is Hyster® Variable Power Technology™, which provides adjustable performance modes allowing customers to maximize productivity or fuel economy to fit their specific application requirements. “At Hyster, we work closely with customers across a wide range of industries to address the need to increase performance and uptime while enhancing fuel economy and efficiency,” said Bill Pfleger, Vice President of Counterbalance Solution. “This award is evidence of the market need this product fills and confirms the value end-users receive by choosing Hyster® products.” In its 27th year, the Plant Engineering Product of the Year award competition allows readers to select the outstanding new products that help them do their jobs smarter, safer, more efficiently and more productively. www.hyster.com

Industry News Q3 forecasts 5% Growth in equipment and software investment Investment in equipment and software is expected to grow 5 percent in 2015, according to the Q3 update to the 2015 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook released today by the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation. As the U.S. economy rebounds from a disappointing Q1, the report predicts that business confidence will improve, which should encourage greater investment over the second half of 2015. The outlook for 12 individual equipment and software verticals tracked in the report is mixed, with some sectors outperforming others. The Foundation’s Economic Outlook, which is focused on the $903 billion equipment leasing and finance industry, forecasts 2015 equipment investment and capital spending in the United States and evaluates the effects of various industry and external factors likely to affect growth over the next 12 months. William G. Sutton, CAE, President of the Foundation and President and CEO of the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association, said, “Despite a weak start to the year and remaining obstacles to growth, the Foundation’s Outlook reports that a strengthening U.S. economy bodes well for the second half of the year for equipment and software investment. Data from the Foundation’s Monthly Confidence Index and ELFA’s Monthly Leasing and Finance Index also reflect positive trends in equipment investment. In addition, expectations of a Fed rate increase later this year could encourage households and businesses to ‘pull forward’ investments in the coming months. The Outlook report also predicts that a steady increase in new business volume and a rising propensity to finance will drive positive growth for the equipment finance industry in 2015.”

• The Foundation-Keybridge U.S. Equipment & Software Investment Momentum Monitor, which is included in the report and tracks 12 equipment and software investment verticals, forecasts the following equipment investment activity: • Agriculture machinery investment growth will likely remain weak or negative over the next three to six months. • Construction machinery investment growth should remain steady over the next three to six months. • Materials handling equipment investment growth could slow over the next three to six months. • All other industrial equipment investment growth may decline further over the next three to six months. • Medical equipment investment growth is expected to remain strong over the next three to six months. • Mining and oilfield machinery investment should remain weak over the next three to six months. • Aircraft investment growth may remain steady or moderate slightly over the next three to six months. • Ships and boats investment growth may moderate in the next three to six months. • Railroad equipment investment growth rates may decline over the next three to six months. • Trucks investment growth could ease somewhat over the next three to six months. • Computers investment growth rates should remain steady over the next three to six months. • Software investment growth will likely remain stable over the next three to six months.

Highlights from the study include:

The Foundation produces the Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook report in partnership with economics and public policy consulting firm Keybridge Research. The annual economic forecast provides a three-to-six month outlook for industry investment with data, including a summary of investment trends in key equipment markets, credit market conditions, the U.S. macroeconomic outlook and key economic indicators. The Q3 report is the second update to the 2015 Annual Outlook, and will be followed by one more quarterly update before the publication of the 2016 Annual Outlook in December. Download the full report at www.leasefoundation.org/research/eo/.

• Investment in equipment and software is expected to grow 5 percent in 2015, down from 5.8 percent in 2014. Following a weak fourth quarter of 2014, equipment and software investment growth picked up modestly from 1.6 percent in Q4 2014 to 3.8 percent in Q1 2015. The struggling manufacturing and energy sectors are obstacles to growth, yet an improving economy should provide a lift to business investment and equipment finance activity during the second half of 2015. • GDP is expected to grow 2.6 percent in 2015. After 2.2 percent growth in the fourth quarter of 2014, the U.S. economy contracted 0.2 percent in Q1 2015, driven largely by harsh winter weather on the East Coast, a port strike on the West Coast, and a strong dollar that harmed net exports. Mirroring 2014, the disappointing first quarter is expected to hold back annual growth in 2015. Growth drivers expected to fuel faster growth for the rest of 2015 include a strengthening labor market, momentum in housing, and improved consumer spending. • Credit availability and demand continue to gradually rise. The weak first quarter presented a short-term headwind to borrowing, but stronger growth over the remainder of the year should encourage greater borrowing from businesses in the second half of 2015.

Industry News How to quote a pallet rack pallet flow system A Pallet Flow Pallet Rack System works on a FIFO (first in first out) inventory rotation with pallets placed on wheel tracks or rollers that are set on an inclined rack. A pallet is loaded onto the pallet rack from one end and moves at a controlled pace until it reaches the stops at the other end. When the front pallet is removed, the next pallet rolls forward. A Pallet Flow Rack System is great for a high volume inventory turnover and for products with timely expiration dates. This system can be configured from two to twenty pallets deep and utilizes maximum warehouse floor space by storing the pallets back to back, minimizing the need for additional aisles. Another advantage of the Pallet Flow Rack System is that pallets can be removed from the front as others are being loaded from the back, making the inventory accessible at all times. Following is the standard information we ask our customers when quoting a pallet flow rack system: • What is the layout? How many pallets deep by how many pallets wide by how many pallet high?

• What is the minimum and maximum weight of the pallet? What is the size of the standard pallet: depth, width and height, and what is the size of the pallet with any overhanging product: depth, width and height? The pallet height should always include the load and the pallet. • What type of pallets are the customer using and are they in good condition? There are many different pallet styles. The preferred pallet for a Pallet Flow Rack System is a standard 48" deep x 40" wide GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) pallet. • What is the building clear height? • What type of warehouse environment will this be used in? Freezer, cooler or ambient temperature? Will it be placed outdoors or in a wet area? This will tell us if we need to quote galvanized or standard painted pallet rack. At WPRP Our Goal is to Help You, and that includes quoting engineered pallet rack systems. www.wprpwholesalepalletrack.com

Industry News Fair market value or $1 buyout lease? By William G. Sutton, CAE, President and CEO, Equipment Leasing and Finance Association

Smart business owners and managers know preserving capital is an important financial goal. Particularly if you’re a small or start-up business, it’s often the case that you don’t have the access to capital that larger or better established businesses do. When you’re looking to preserve or access capital, equipment financing is an attractive option that offers these and numerous other benefits when acquiring equipment. With leasing, knowing the factors that go into deciding whether to enter into a fair market value (FMV) lease or $1 buyout lease will enable you to make the right financing choice for the equipment you need to operate your business. To begin, it’s useful to have an understanding of the definitions of an FMV and a $1 buyout lease. An FMV lease is an operating lease to use equipment while a $1 buyout lease is a capital lease to own equipment, which essentially acts as a loan. With an FMV lease you use the equipment for a certain period, and typically you use it at a lower cost than if the equipment were purchased outright or with borrowed capital. That’s because the equipment has a residual value at the end of the lease which the financing company can expect to realize through the sale or re-lease of the asset. With an FMV lease, you’re not paying for the full cost of the equipment. Should you decide at lease end that you’d like to continue to use the equipment, you may have the option to buy the equipment at a negotiated fair market rate or use it at a reduced rental, depending on the lease terms. There are multiple reasons to use an FMV lease. Your business can realize significant benefits from the following: • Accurate budget planning • Reduced cost of use of the equipment • Elimination of equipment obsolescence • Outsourced cost and responsibility of equipment management and disposal • Bundled services, such as a lease tracking system to alert the user to the end of the lease in order to plan for replacement or return of the equipment, and maintenance. Long life equipment types—aircraft, construction, manufacturing, etc.—are suitable for FMV leases since they typically maintain relatively higher residual values. It is also more economically beneficial to enter into an FMV lease for equipment used in projects, common in construction, and for seasonal needs, such as in agriculture. Some shorter useful life equipment types, such as technology and office equipment, are also appropriate for FMV leases since they help end users avoid owning obsolete equipment at the end. $1 buyout leases are often entered into when obtaining financing through equipment manufacturers, and they are frequently offered as a sales incentive. Since end users typically prefer to hold onto their capital, if their objective is to own the equipment in the future, a $1 buyout lease offers 100 percent financing and no down payment which enables them to preserve cash. A $1 buyout lease also gives ownership of the equipment to the end user for tax purposes so bonus depreciation and interest expenses can be claimed.

Often the choice between an FMV lease and a $1 buyout lease depends on the predisposition of the end-user company. To help make an objective business case, consider the following:

Five key questions to consider in an FMV or $1 buyout lease decision: 1. How long will your business need to use the equipment? Generally speaking, if the length of time the equipment is expected to be used is short term (which usually means 36 months or less), an FMV lease is likely the preferable option. Equipment expected to be used longer relative to its useful life or that you know you will want to keep at the end of the term is appropriate for a $1 buyout lease. 2. How soon will the equipment become obsolete in the future? Most equipment will become obsolete at some point, some faster than others. The sooner it is expected to become outdated, the better suited it is for an FMV lease so you don’t get saddled with old technology, and can upgrade with new equipment that can give your business a competitive edge. 3. Does your business have the resources to manage assets throughout their lifecycle? Equipment management is a function that requires resources and expertise that are beyond the scope of most businesses. Selling or disposing of the asset, maintenance, repair and other aspects of asset management become the end-user’s responsibility at the end of a $1 buyout lease. With an FMV lease, you outsource the asset management function to the equipment leasing company so you can focus on your core business. 4. Do you anticipate the need for additional equipment? If your business is planning for growth, you’ll want your equipment to be able to scale. An FMV lease will enable you to get the right type and amount of equipment your business needs in the future, and not be forced to mix and match newer with older assets. 5. Will the equipment be used for a new venture? When embarking on an untested business venture, there may be uncertainty of when or if it will be successful. An FMV lease will enable you to mitigate the risks of uncertainty and hedge against ending up owning a piece of equipment you may not need in the future. Whether you choose an FMV lease or a $1 buyout lease, the most important thing to keep in mind is that both will enable your business to enjoy benefits you can’t attain when purchasing equipment with cash. www.equipmentfinanceadvantage.org

To compete in today's watered-down travel marketplace you need to become an "Authority Figure." This is more true today than ever before. (Yes, I said "need.") People listen to authority figures and they rely on them for their opinions and recommendations. Examples include pilots, ship captains, doctors, lawyers, priests, and rabbis, just to name a few. The fastest way to position yourself as an "authority" is to begin sharing your expertise in writing. Of course it helps if you know a little bit about your specialty. This brings me to today's message. You know a lot more than you give yourself credit for. It is your duty (responsibility) to share this information with others to help enhance their travel experiences. Get started this week. "Ah, the blank slate. So pretty. So blank. You can change all that and more... all it takes is one word.” Think about writing that first word this week. It does not have to be a thing of beauty. Just start ... with a single word. You can then add to it and edit it to make it worth sharing. People have a tendency to doubt the spoken word, yet they have a tendency to believe the written word. The ball is in your court. Industry News Synchronizing two hoists eases handling of long loads Hoists operate simultaneously with stepless variable speed control to ensure safe and efficient material handling. Lifting and moving long and bulky loads can often present a problem in industrial or manufacturing material handling applications but member companies of the Hoist Manufacturers Institute (HMI) have overhead solutions based on simultaneous operation of hoists. Typically when two independent hoists are operated in parallel, the differences in starting and stopping times causes the hoist lift or trolley travel to loose synchrony. As the operator tries to rectify the situation they have to turn one hoist on to move the load back to the level position or reposition the hoist or trolley. This slows the process and if the operator does not manually perform the required leveling it can lead to uneven lifting and possibly load slipping, which can cause damage to loads or property and can put personnel in danger. A solution recently demonstrated by an HMI member company takes advantage of encoder feedback on the hoist and trolley and CANbus communication between the hoists to ensure that when the units are in simultaneous operation, lifting and traveling are always synchronized.

We Will Solve Your Mobility Problems

In addition, with other solutions using conventional controls without feedback, one hoist overload may trip, turning the hoist off, while the other hoist continues to lift. If the operator does not recognize this situation, it could lead to further overloading of the hoists or tipping of the load. With this particular solution, the internal communication ensures that if one hoist is overloaded, then both hoists will stop. HMI, an overhead lifting equipment product group within MHI, provides end users with access to manufacturers which produce the best hoists on the market. The units chosen for this application come standard with stepless variable speed control. Similar to the accelerator in a car, the harder the driver pushes, the faster the car will go. This feature gives the operator full control and is very helpful when lifting and positioning long materials. The standard controls on many new hoists are ideal for lifting applications that require simultaneous and independent lifting with the two hoists. They provide standard features and benefits that are not available from conventional parallel connection of two hoists. The result is increased throughput and improved operator safety. The Hoist Manufacturers Institute members are the industry’s leading suppliers of hoisting equipment including hand chain hoists, ratchet lever hoists, trolleys, air chain hoists, air wire rope hoists, electric chain hoists, and electric wire hoists for the manufacturing and distribution sectors. www.mhia.org/hmi

Creamer’s Corner Symbols: An Exercise of Definitions #124 Mike Creamer

Recently, I am reminded how important symbols are to our society, past, present and future. I remember seeing the symbols on the walls of the ancient Anasazi Indians in Arizona. Some symbols were easily recognizable and others were not. I am not sure even if the experts know the meaning of all of them. Their living quarters were canyon homes built into the side of rock walls. We can only assume they built them in this way for protection from the elements of weather, animals of prey or perhaps their enemies. So, they disappeared around 1,000 a.d., but even today symbols are always part of our daily lives as well. This leads me into the meaning of my article “an exercise in symbol definitions.” These symbol definitions are all about sweeper/scrubber symbols. There are symbols that are very distinct with this industry. Not long ago, I received a phone call from one of my customers. He’s responsible for a Tennant Model T20 Scrubber. As he stated, we have a new trainee operator taking charge of this machine. And guess what? He is unfamiliar with many of the symbols on the dash and needs to learn them quickly. I have misplaced my machine manual. Mike, can you supply some kind of “cheat sheet” to help him? Of course I can as I replied to his request. I will e-mail this info. You may or may not think Tennant has a monopoly on symbols. If one were to own a Nilfisk-Advance Model captor 4800, for example, you would see similar symbols on their machine as well. So let’s go over some of these symbols, and reme mop a floor with no water. The end result is not good. Look over these symbol definitions and see what you know. Symbols have been around for thousands of years and will be for thousands in the future. As always, I appreciate that you read my articles. If you have a comment or questions, shoot me an e-mail. Creamer's Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear's Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber.

This new product is an innovative system engineered to instantly assemble, link, disassemble and rearrange conveyor lines to make loading, unloading and sortation processes faster and more efficient. BestConnect is the most versatile conveying system available that is easily configured and re-configured to suit customers’ current and future warehouse management requirements. “FMH Conveyors developed this system to provide growing customers with a more cost-effective solution to improve the efficiency of their fluid loading and unloading processes,” says Kurt Huelsman, Sr. Vice President & General Manager of FMH Conveyors. “Many distribution centers are engaged in both e-commerce fulfillment directly to customers as well as store replenishment. There’s a growing need for speed and efficiency for these DCs to optimize multiple operations while minimizing setup times and space requirements of conveying equipment.” BestConnect also provides automation at a lower cost entry point with the flexibility to reconfigure loading areas for changing product dimensions and volumes. This concept serves customers who want simpler systems without large hardware investments,” says Huelsman. FMH Conveyor’s BestConnect units are available in two standard widths, 24" and 30", and have straight sections that can be ordered in 5, 7.5, and 10-foot lengths. The BestConnect line also includes 90 degree tapered roller

curves and 30 & 45 degree merges. The entire system locks together solidly with similar characteristics of a bolted rigid conveyor, but offers much more flexibility with its ability to move on casters. All conveyor sections operate on 110V electrical current and are married together with easy-latching connections that reduce complexity and minimize on-site engineering activities. This allows warehouse activities to be back up and running quickly and efficiently. BestConnect rigid reconfigurable conveyors can easily be combined with any NestaFlex or BestFlex products for complete and versatile system solutions. Automated flow controls deliver added efficiencies including improved ergonomics, reduced labor costs, and improved service life. Business Profile SpaceGuard Products celebrates 25 years! SpaceGuard Products, manufacturer of wire mesh safeguarding and secure storage enclosures, is proud to announce that July 2015 marks its first quarter century in business. Going beyond the products, SpaceGuard is a growing second-generation family business located in southern Indiana. To celebrate this milestone, a new logo and website (www. fordlogan.com) was created for their flagship product line, FordLogan woven wire. In commemoration, SpaceGuard also unveiled a new Mission Statement: To create superior safety solutions and secured storage enclosures, ensuring value with exceptional customer support before, during and after a sale. Over the course of the past 25 years, SpaceGuard has expanded its steel product offerings to include welded wire and expanded metal cages, robotic enclosures, military and tenant storage lockers, pallet rack guarding and industrial guard rail. Since opening its doors, SpaceGuard has played a vital part in keeping people, products and equipment safe and secure. As a trusted source of guarding and storage solutions, their products can be found in national bank chains, postal sorting facilities, hotels, casinos, data centers, military bases, manufacturing facilities, distribution centers, schools, law enforcement buildings, national retailers and even in many of your favorite restaurants. Whether securing a restaurant’s bar supplies or creating a 30’ tall highly customized enclosure that meets DEA specifications, SpaceGuard has been providing solutions through its network of distributors from Guam to Puerto Rico…and everywhere in between.

“SpaceGuard, much like the material handling industry, has drastically changed over the past 25 years and I am proud of where we’re from and where we’re headed. As many manufacturers shift their focus on how to cheapen their brands, we have stood our ground and focused on producing high quality products backed by unrivalled customer support,” said Eddie Murphy, SpaceGuard President. “We are excited about the culture that exists at SpaceGuard and we’re invested in continued growth.” In its last 25 years, SpaceGuard Products has successfully traversed over 40 thousand projects! Vice President of Operations and 25-year team member, Hauris Lewis, expressed, “To be a successful U.S. manufacturer despite continued domestic and foreign competition says a ton about the products and people we have. Thank you to all of our loyal dealers and customers for the 25 years of support.” www.spaceguardproducts.com

Safety Corner Summer safety tips By: Kevin Hildebrandt, Director of Risk Management at Miron Construction.

After a long winter, most people celebrate the coming of summer and its longer days and warmer temperatures. For some, however, while these conditions may be ideal for recreation, they can make the workplace more dangerous. The body rids itself of excess heat by circulating blood to the skin and by perspiring. If the body cannot get rid itself of enough excess heat, it has no choice but to store it, causing the body’s core temperature to rise and heart rate to increase. Excessive exposure to heat can cause several different medical issues that range in severity, from heat rash and heat cramps to the more serious heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Signs of heat exhaustion • Dizziness • Nausea or vomiting • Chills • Paleness • Staggering, feeling dazed • Loss of consciousness • Weak pulse and low body temperature

Signs of heat stroke • High body temperature • Altered mental state or behavior • Nausea and vomiting • Flushed skin • Rapid breathing • Racing heart rate • Headache

If you or one of your coworkers shows any of these symptoms, it’s important to act quickly. Seek medical attention, keep the victim lying down with their head lower than their feet. Loosen the victim’s clothing and administer fluids, if possible. Avoid ice water, as it can cause shock to the system. Working in extreme heat also increases the risk of other injuries due to sweaty palms, fogged-up safety glasses, or burns from hot surfaces or steam. With this in mind, it’s important to know several ways to prevent overexposure to heat and mitigate heat-related accidents. • See a doctor immediately if you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above • Stay hydrated—drink plenty of cool liquids throughout the day to replace body salts lost through perspiring • Wear light, loose clothing • Always wear protective equipment, such as gloves • If your work environment is enclosed, but not air conditioned, ensure that there is ample ventilation • Rest when you feel dizzy or fatigued When warm—and hot—weather rolls around, be prepared. Have a plan in place to deal with heat-induced injuries and respond quickly when you experience symptoms. Acting quickly can save lives!

The Level Lift System is a fully configured and assembled system, which includes a ZE4 pump, hoses, gauges and cart. Each cylinder must have the same effective area. www.enerpac.com
