Industry News Positive picture continues for the equipment rental industry The equipment rental industry revenue forecast for the next five years continues to paint a very positive picture for the future in the United States, with growth rates exceeding 7 percent through at least 2018, according to the latest projections released by the American Rental Association (ARA). The U.S. industry also remains on track to reach record revenue of $38.3 billion in 2015. The recently updated ARA Rental Market Monitor™ five-year forecast remains strong, despite slower demand for rental equipment from the mining, oil and gas sector, as commercial and residential construction spending have started to pick up steam this year and are expected to grow faster over the next few years. Overall, total equipment rental revenue in 2015 for the U.S. is expected to grow 7.3 percent with growth of 7.8 percent in 2016, 7.3 percent in 2017, 7.4 percent in 2018 and 6.5 percent in 2019 to reach $50.6 billion. In Canada, equipment rental revenue is forecast to increase 2.6 percent in 2015 to reach $4.04 billion. The growth rate is projected to increase 3.1 percent in 2016, 3.9 percent in 2017, 6.4 percent in 2018 and 4.5 percent in 2019 to reach $4.83 billion. For North America, with the U.S. and Canada combined, total equipment rental revenue is forecast to be $43.3 billion in 2015, up 6.8 percent, reaching $56.6 billion in 2019. “The equipment rental industry continues on an upward trajectory and is expected to show significantly strong growth through 2019. Some specific market conditions may change, but rental companies are agile and can adapt their inventory and fleet to fit what the market demands,” says Christine Wehrman, ARA’s executive vice president and CEO. “Customers from large construction companies to contractors, homeowners, corporate event planners and families celebrating milestones likes weddings and graduations also continue to learn that renting equipment is a smart move, both economically and environmentally, leading to more organic growth for rental companies,” Wehrman says. The new quarterly ARA forecast from the ARA Rental Market Monitor subscription service has been modified slightly compared to the first quarter’s forecast, reflecting the rapid change in market conditions, the economic dip related to the harsh weather earlier this year and the volatility in the energy markets. U.S. construction and industrial equipment rental revenue, according to the forecast, is now expected to grow 7.6 percent in 2015,

7.9 percent in 2016, 7.7 percent in 2017, 7.8 percent in 2018 and 6.5 percent in 2019. U.S. general tool rental revenue now is expected to grow 7.5 percent in 2015, 8.5 percent in 2016, 7.6 percent in 2017, 7.8 percent in 2018 and 7.8 percent in 2019. U.S. party and event rental revenue now is projected to grow 4 percent in 2015 and 4.3 percent in 2016, with growth slowing to 1.9 percent in 2017, 2.0 percent in 2018 and 1.8 percent in 2019. While total rental revenue increased 3.8 percent in the first quarter, ARA estimates revenue growth for the industry at 7.2 percent in the second quarter, 8.4 percent in the third quarter and 9.9 percent in the fourth quarter, compared to the same time periods in 2014. IHS Economics, the respected economic forecasting firm that compiles data and analysis for the ARA Rental Market Monitor, said U.S. expansion is back on track as growth resumed in the second quarter, led by a pickup in consumer spending, but tempered by a slowing in inventory investment. In addition, IHS Economics said consumer spending is currently support by gains in employment, real disposable income and asset values, and that housing markets should steadily recover in response to rising employment, easing credit standards and pent-up demand. “In general, we are seeing positive economic forces favoring the equipment rental industry that outweigh any negative market forces. That leads to rental companies showing more confidence and increasing investments in fleets that will support the growth of the industry,” Wehrman says. Rental companies, according to the ARA Rental Market Monitor, are forecast to invest nearly $12.6 billion this year in equipment, increasing to $13.5 billion in 2016 and $14.1 billion in 2017. Investment as a share of revenue is expected to be more than 32 percent for each of the next three years. Adverse weather and the slowdown in oil and gas industry investment also impacted Canada in the first quarter of 2015 as the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) declined at a 0.6 percent annual rate. Lower oil prices are particularly impacting Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland while Ontario and Quebec are benefitting from gains in consumer purchasing power and export competitiveness. In addition, the Bank of Canada lowered its policy rate to 0.5 percent in mid-July to help revive economic growth. As a result in Canada, construction and industrial revenue is forecast to grow 2.5 percent in 2015, 3.1 percent in 2016, 3.9 percent in 2017, 6.8 percent in 2018 and 4.7 percent in 2019. General tool’s growth rates over for 2015-2019 in Canada are projected to be 3.0 percent, 2.9 percent, 3.5 percent, 5.3 percent and 4.1 percent while party and event’s growth is forecast for 3.5 percent, 3.9 percent, 4.6 percent, 3.5 percent and 2.4 percent.

Industry News NACCO restructures dealer networks NACCO Materials Handling Group, Inc. (“NMHG”) announced that pending the completion of the proposed transactions between Gregory Poole Equipment Company, Dougherty Equipment Company, Inc., LiftOne LLC, VBS Inc. Material Handling Equipment, andBriggs Equipment, Inc. and execution of dealer agreements, the Company will have successfully completed a major restructuring of the dealer networks for its Hyster® and Yale® brands across six states. Some time ago, Dougherty Equipment Company Inc., a Yale dealer, advised NMHG of its intent to sell its dealer operations, located in portions of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia, upon the retirement of its Owner and Chief Executive Officer, Michael Dougherty. Over the past year, NMHG has worked with Dougherty to develop a viable succession plan and to help facilitate the sale of its material handling operations, while ensuring continuity for customers and associates. NMHG is pleased to announce that a letter of intent to acquire Dougherty’s operations has been executed by Gregory Poole Equipment Company, headquartered in Raleigh, NC. At closing, expected around October 1, 2015, Gregory Poole will sell a portion of the Dougherty assets to LiftOne, LLC, a dual-brand dealer of Hyster and Yale lift trucks headquartered in Charlotte, NC. Also, in related transactions, Gregory Poole has executed letters of intent to acquire operations of VBS Inc. Materials Handling Equipment, a current Hyster dealer with six branch locations across Virginia, West Virginia

and North Carolina, and certain assets and facilities of Briggs Equipment, Inc., a dual-brand Hyster and Yale dealer. Subsequent to the completion of the transactions, Gregory Poole will become the Yale dealer in portions of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, and the Hyster dealer in most of Virginia and in portions of North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia. Gregory Poole will transition from existing competitive supplier relationships when appointed to represent the Hyster and Yale brands. LiftOne, LLC, a subsidiary of Carolina Tractor and Equipment Company (“CTE”), is the current Hyster dealer in portions of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Virginia and Kentucky, and the Hyster and Yale dealer in portions of Tennessee. Once the transactions are completed, LiftOne will also represent Yale in portions of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The Company is excited and looks forward to welcoming Gregory Poole to its authorized dealer network and believes the complexity of the transactions is mitigated by the talent, experience and leadership provided by Dougherty, VBS, and Briggs associates that are expected to become an integral part of the Gregory Poole enterprise and culture. The Company is pleased that its U.S. dual-brand dealer network will be expanded through both Gregory Poole and LiftOne upon completion of the proposed transactions and execution of dealer agreements for the assigned territories. We are also pleased to announce that in an unrelated transaction, Briggs Equipment, Inc. will be appointed as the dual-brand dealer in South Florida effective July 1, 2015. Briggs Equipment is the current Yale® dealer in portions of Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas and the Hyster dealer in portions of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee and a dual-brand dealer in portions of Georgia and Alabama. “Representing over 10,000 units per year, across five states with four eastern United States marine ports (Norfolk, Wilmington, Charleston and Savannah), the market presently serviced by Dougherty Equipment, VBS and Briggs is critically important to both Hyster and Yale,” said NMHG Vice President Dealer Business Development, Bob Sattler. Network re-engineering and competitive conversion activity are important in securing our position as industry leaders in independent distribution. We are delighted to welcome Gregory Poole as our newest dealer and believe that their commitment to excellence and record of performance representing competitive brands will quickly translate into success with Hyster and Yale customers. The customer base in this re-engineered territory includes a diversified group of paper, pulp and wood processors, light and heavy manufacturing, conversion and assembly plants, as well as regional and national distribution centers requiring the complete range of material handling equipment and services that Hyster Company and Yale Materials Handling Corporation can uniquely support.” www.hyster-yale.com

Health Nudge Lifelong learning benefits health Mary Strickler, TVH

When you think about living a healthy lifestyle, it’s no surprise that many tend to think about eating right or staying physically active. The mind is probably one of the last areas that you focus your efforts. However more and more studies are showing that when it comes to your health, the mind is one of the most powerful muscles to train in order to see long term results. But how do you train your brain? The answer is through lifelong learning. Whether you read a book or take a class, learning has been linked to improving your mental acuity, boosting your self-esteem, and enhancing your career path. In today’s dynamic economy, adaptation has become essential in the workplace. Workers who are lifelong learners can master new skills and maneuver outside of their comfort zone to keep their career moving forward. However many find it difficult to make time in their busy schedules to expand their knowledge or skillset, especially those with stable jobs. Because of this, organizations have started to invest in Learning Management Systems to bring the classroom directly to their workforce. A Learning Management System has several benefits to both employers and employees. First, the training administrators can streamline the training process to plan, share, and evaluate results to determine the overall success of the training. Secondly because people learn in different ways, the LMS allows employers to offer a variety of learning approaches including face to face, online, and mobile to a large number of learners at any location. Training is no longer limited to seating capacity, location, or department. This means learning can be more consistent and standardized. Employees benefit from the Learning Management System because they now have flexible training programs available anytime, anywhere. They are no longer hindered by time or location restrictions. These trainings can be offered in a variety of media formats including HTML courses, videos, and podcasts which can offer an engaging learning experience to each user. Finally employees now have the ability to gain access to a wealth of learning modules to boost their knowledge base, making them far better candidates for being promoted within the company. TVH implemented a Learning Management System in 2013, with the goal of focusing on three major areas: consistent on-the-job training, expanding curriculum offered, and succession planning. In the first year alone, more than 500 employees took advantage of the new system TVH Connect, and participated in at least one of the curriculum available. Today, TVH Connect boasts more than 400 programs at all 10 locations across the Americas, but the benefits don’t stop there. The performance cloud also includes other useful tools that help you expand your career perspectives. Just by keeping an employee profile up-to-date, the user strongly increase the visibility of their career aspirations. It is a quick and easy way to display personal goals on a professional level, which allows TVH to promote within and continue succession planning for the future. So as you continue to concentrate on a healthier lifestyle and workforce, don’t forget the benefits of focusing on lifelong learning for yourself and within your organization. You can master old hobbies, renew old passions, hone your skills and improve the richness of your life. This in turn creates a happier, healthier, more well-rounded and engaged you. If you’d like to learn more about these programs or health and wellness at your workplace contact Mary Strickler at mary.strickler@tvh.com for more information.

Industry News LogFire WMS creates first 100 percent cloud-based supply chain solution LogFire, the leading cloud-based provider of supply chain fulfillment solutions, announced today the successful integration of its flagship Warehouse Management System with Oracle Transportation Management, creating the industry’s first 100 percent cloud-based supply chain execution convergence solution. Inspirage leading global consulting firm, successfully leveraged its Rapid Start for Oracle Transportation Management Cloud process to integrate the two solutions. “One of the most important trends in logistics management is a concept that Gartner calls supply chain execution (SCE) convergence, which refers to the need for supply chain organizations to better orchestrate and synchronize execution processes across functional execution domains,” wrote Dwight Klappich, research vice president, Gartner. “In Gartner's 2013 SCM User Wants and Needs Survey, we found that more than 40 percent of respondents said that the inability to orchestrate and synchronize end-to-end business processes was one of the top three barriers to meeting their SCM goals and objectives.”1 The joint solution will provide best-of-breed warehousing and transportation functionality while leveraging the benefits of a 100 percent cloud-based solution. What this means to the end-user is: • Digital Fulfillment Network: Manage, track and visualize inventory across fulfillment centers, 3PLs, store shelves and inventory in-transit with real-time data. Companies will gain speed and reduce fulfillment costs by connecting networks in real-time.

Become the Exception Do what works ... again and again and again Mike Marchev

I was reminded of this simple yet profound truth on a tele-seminar I conducted not long ago. This one is important my friends, and very deep. Tune in. And listen to what I am about to share with you. As I always do, I asked my coaching students for their recent good news / bad news stories. I do this so we can all learn from each other, both good and bad. The topic was distribution, and more specifically, how we can increase our service distribution path. I offered an idea and one “student” immediately shared the fact that she had done exactly what I was talking about ... and that it worked to perfection. I applauded her positive efforts before asking her when she enjoyed her marketing success story. Remember, this was on a seminar conducted recently. Her reply was met with disbelief and more than a modicum of chagrin. “2007” was the year she last performed this “successful” marketing gambit. 2007! I suggested that she forget everything she has ever read about sales and marketing since that day in 2007 and simply do what she did back then. I meant it. People (you and me) study, read, buy books, go to seminars, attend conferences and go to church on Sundays to pray for ideas that just might work. Then, on a good day, something we do does work. Then, for some unexplained phenomenon, we sign up for another seminar. My mind drifted back to my days as a collegiate football quarterback. We had a play book with at least 3000 plays inside its threeinch tomb. You have probably noticed on television one play being called after another ... seldom looking or unfolding in a similar fashion. This never made much sense to me. If I called a play and it worked for more than three and a half yards, I would call the same play until the defense wised up and stopped our forward motion. “Why try numerous plays when one would do the job?” The same holds true for marketing. When you stumble across some idea, strategy, tactic or gambit that works, do it again ... and again ... and again. Do it until it stops working. I truly hope my coaching student returns to 2007 and does whatever it was she did back then. I doubt that she will. Apparently it is more fun to fail at a new challenge than to benefit continuously from former behaviors. Have another great week by making it another great week. Mike Marchev is a marketing humorist who has the skill to motivate. He shares his personal experiences and lessons in a fun, light and refreshing fashion through his monthly articles. Industry News Akro-Mils introduces Universal Hanging Bin

NEW!

Akro-Mils, a North American leader in storage, organization and transport products, introduces the Universal Hanging Bin. This uniquely designed bin can be hung from any of its four sides, creating different bin profiles. An Akro-Mils exclusive! One bin does it all! The Universal Hanging Bin’s patent-pending design allows bins to adapt to users’ changing storage needs. The bins feature a full-rim hanging cleat design that allows the bin to be hung from a louvered panel by any of its four sides, and from rails by two sides. In addition, the bins are sized to fit evenly across standard-size wire and steel shelving units, providing added utility for optimizing storage spaces. Other features and benefits of the Universal Hanging Bin include: • Hanging the bins from the back creates a sloped picking bin, keeping parts visible and accessible. The combined utility of a hanging bin and the convenience of a pick rack! • Hanging the bins from the side on louvered panels minimizes protrusion into the work area. • Hanging the bins from the front creates a standard bin profile, and the bin can be filled to capacity. • The rear hanglock allows bins to tilt out on steel or wire shelving units. • Users can convert their storage space from a hanging-style bin to a shelf bin-style setup without having to purchase additional bins. • Bins nest when empty.

Creamer’s Corner The Tennant Scrubber – Uniqueness of 3-in-1 Michael R. Creamer

Before the Tennant Model 5700, there was the 480 walk-behind scrubber. The 480 was one of three series models that began production around 1991. The three series models were as follows: Model 465 which is 26" scrub path Model 480 32" scrub path Model 490 36" scrub path These were the beginning of Tennant scrubbers and the uniqueness with which they were produced. All three machines were initially the same, the body, frame and electrical. What made the difference was the front scrub deck and the rear squeegee assembly. So, if you purchased a Model 465 you would receive the basic machine with a 26" scrub deck and 26"squeegee assembly. If you purchased a Model 480, the scrub deck and rear squeegee assembly would be 32" and the Model 490 would be 36" width. The uniqueness of this idea was that it would, 1) lower Tennant’s manufacturing cost by making the same basic machine and 2) increase convenience to the customer with the ability to change machine widths by simply changing out the scrub deck and squeegee assembly. Where this idea became very popular was the rental houses and cleaning companies. If you went to a rental house and a 36" width scrubber won’t fit through your door, no problem, they could switch out the scrub deck and squeegee assembly and “Wa La”, you now have a 32" or 26" width depending on what you needed. And, of course, one could scrub floors in the warehouse with scrub brushes or by installing pad drivers you could now polish your office floors. Enough said about the history of these models. Trouble shooting some of these machines can become an art form with years of experience. After receiving this particular phone call he stated that he recently purchased a Tennant model 480 walk-behind scrubber. He said that the unit will not move forward and wanted an opinion. Okay, this unit has a transaxle with an electric drive motor. Below are the items I would recommend you check. At least it is a good starting place.

1) The Batteries. You don’t know how long the machine has been sitting or how old the battery is. He said, that was the first item I replaced. I said, good then we are on the same page. Check these other items and advise if I can further help. 2) Drive Motor: Check for worn and sticking motor brushes. 3) Drive Motor Overload: Check circuit breakers. You may just want to replace because they are relatively inexpensive. 4) Extreme Brush Pressure: Believe it or not however the heavy brush pressure can actually hold back a scrubber from moving at all. So I would advise raising the brushes off the ground until you have this movement thing resolved. 5) Drive chain: There is a drive chain from the drive motor to the transaxle. Make sure it is still there and/or not damaged. 6) Wiring: And of course inspect the wiring and connectors for fraying or damage. Repair as necessary.

Do these things and I am sure your machine drive problems will come to a conclusion. Good Luck. About two weeks went by before I received an e-mail. It said: Mike, motor brush and circuit breaker bad. Thanks. Machine works great. This concludes my article this month. As always, I appreciate you reading. If you happen to have any questions and/or comments contact me at creamerscorner@hi-gear.com Creamer's Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear's Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber.

Business Profile J.W. Speaker Corporation, founded in July of 1935 by John W. Speaker, began as a manufacturer of automotive repair parts; including, radiator fronts, car mirrors, repair kits and automotive lighting. In the early 1940’s, J.W. Speaker developed the Heatab® miniature portable stove and the “P38” GI can opener. Both were widely used during World War II and for several decades after by the U.S. military. In 1960, under the leadership of John’s son Jack, J.W. Speaker Corporation shifted its focus to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) vehicular lighting, expanding the product offering to include vehicular lighting for lawn & garden and golf & turf tractors. Since then, J.W. Speaker has evolved into a major lighting manufacturer specializing in quality lighting products for OEMs and aftermarket customers around the world. Today, J.W. Speaker Corporation is still a family-run business and is led by John’s grandsons, Tim and Jamie Speaker. The company now serves a variety of industries including: agriculture, construction, onroad commercial, material handling, mining, motorcycle, recreation, and aviation markets. Their success is derived from putting the customers’ need first, focusing on new and emerging technologies alongside quality production. "As we celebrate 80 years, it's exciting to think about how far the business has come. J.W. Speaker has progressed from a small parts automotive manufacturer into a global manufacturer of cutting edge lighting technology," said Tim Speaker, J.W. Speaker's Co-President and Co-Owner. J.W. Speaker serves both OEM and aftermarket customers, taking pride in meeting the unique needs of both large manufacturers and end users, by providing innovative and high quality lighting products. Jamie Speaker, J.W. Speaker's other Co-President and Co-Owner, added “We are committed to continually evolving to meet the needs of our customers, just as we’ve done for the past 80 years.”

Industry News How to prepare for access equipment rental when emergency strikes Whilst it is important to have an action plan in place for when emergency strikes, preparing for access equipment rental in such a situation involves a host of challenges and considerations. It is important that workers have access to the machines they need to do their jobs in the event of an emergency damaging or otherwise making their usual ones unavailable. By identifying your workplace’s rental needs, you can ensure that it continues running at all times.

Know Your Requirements

Emergencies will fall into one of two categories – natural events (which includes fire, flood, storms, tornadoes or hurricanes) and unscheduled outages (which includes breakdowns). All of these situations can lead to the unanticipated need for rental equipment. The action plans that you implement for either type of emergency can be similar, as both are generally unforeseen – you just need to ensure that the safety and wellbeing of your employees comes first.

Make A Recovery Plan

To ensure the success of your recovery (or action) plan, there are a number of steps that you need to take and considerations to keep in mind. We have only covered some of the more important aspects in the list below, so ensure that you have considered all areas of your business when crafting your plan. • Have your site evaluated by trained professionals, as this will enable you to create an action plan that has been customized to your workplace. The most important part of the evaluation is an inventory of the equipment that you currently own and use.

• Find a rental company in the nearby area and determine whether they have the sort of replacement equipment that you need. • Consider how your workplace is powered – do you need to put fuel into the machine, charge its battery or plug it into an outlet? Remember that, in the case of an emergency, electricity may be cut off to your workplace – do you have an alternative way of powering access equipment rentals? • One such way to ensure that electrically powered equipment can still run is to invest in a generator. It is important to note that you will need an adequate supply of fuel (such as gas, diesel or petrol) to ensure that the generator can be kept running for an extended period. • An automatic transfer switch can easily allow you to switch to an alternate source of power should an emergency knock out your usual one. As you can see, preparing for access equipment rental when an emergency strikes is actually quite simple once you know what you’re doing. The best piece of advice that we can offer is to have an action plan. Whilst having one for each of the emergency categories that could occur is the best way to proceed, having a single plan that will tackle the issues raised by both should be sufficient. At the end of the day, having any sort of plan is better than having none. Andrew Mark has been working as a writer for Liftech. Liftech Handling & Access is offering all type of forklifts and scissor lift since 1990 and presently based in central Dandenong and servicing all areas of greater Melbourne & country Victoria. Business Profile NORD DRIVESYSTEMS celebrates 50 years in motion This year the NORD DRIVESYSTEMS Group is celebrating its 50th anniversary! More than 300 industry representatives joined for the celebration at the German headquarters on June 12, 2015. Many others visited the company’s booth at Hannover Meese in April – including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Narenda Modi, Prime Minister of India. Since its beginning in 1965, NORD has grown from a small local gear manufacturer in Germany to one of the world’s leading drive technology suppliers. The company continues to be family owned to this day. Early on, the company established pinion and shaft production facilities, laying down the foundation for the company’s reputation for quality. As NORD continued to grow, the capacity to build in-house gearboxes, motors and vector drives developed, becoming one of only a handful of full-scale drive system manufacturers with a global sales and service network. In addition to being recognized as a leading provider of quality gear units, NORD is a leader in the field of integrated power electron-ics, offering a comprehensive range of motor starters and vector drives that offer a cost effective solu-tion to customer requirements.

Today NORD employs over 3,200 employees in subsidiaries in 36 countries around the world. Drive engineers provide customer support in 20 languages. Highlighting the continued success, NORD has constructed a new administrative building and extended the production facilities at the German head-quarters with a large new paint shop and logistics center and has made many additions and improve-ments at several other locations around the world. While 2015 marks the 50th anniversary for NORD Drivesystems in Getriebebau Germany, the month of June marked 36 years for NORD Gear Corporation in the United States. After 36 years, NORD in the US has grown to 330 employees in 3 locations; Waunakee, WI, Charlotte, NC and Corona, CA. Industry News FLEET TUNE introduces a cloud-based battery optimization system BattRecon stuns the Promat 2015 Attendees with new and exciting cloud-based warehousing battery servicing products - and a new product called Fleet Tune. FLEET TUNE is an automatically applied battery optimization process that keeps warehousing batteries in a fully optimized condition. Fully optimized batteries use about 25% less re-charging electricity, on average, and are always at their optimum performance increasing lift truck productivity. Optimized batteries use less charging and discharging cycles per week to accomplish the same workload, thus extending their life cycles about 25% on average. The automatic application feature reduces or eliminates technician labor and training. The cloud-based system means that a centralized operator can be located thousands of miles away and scan, command and control the battery charger, the BattRecon process or perform a load discharge test upon the batteries. The heart of the battery optimization process is a new technique referred to as Eco-Pulse which is an electronic signal automatically applied to the battery before and after a normal battery re-charging cycle. To operate, simply connect your charger to the FLEET TUNE System, thereafter, connect your battery to the FLEET TUNE System when re-charging the battery. Once a battery is connected to Fleet Tune, it senses the battery and first applies a patented five-minute ECO-PULSE process to the battery, followed by the normal battery charge, then a final five-minute ECO-PULSE process. Once the cycle is completed, the battery is considered optimized. FLEET TUNE is a commercially viable method of increasing battery service profitability and expanding your existing geographical client

base. Conventional battery service requires the movement of batteries to and from a service facility, incurring transportation, labor, training, insurance and other facilities expenses. FLEET TUNE by contrast, can be shipped to the client using low cost commercial shipping service, then installed by the client in a few minutes and controlled by the service company using a standard internet connection and a web based browser. FLEET TUNE expands your service offering, increases your quality control and product efficiency, while slashing your operational costs! A unique marketing plan is offered exclusively through select dealers, and consists of a one-time, low cost delivery placement fee, followed by an affordable monthly or annual payment plan. The placing dealer will make an initial profit on the delivery, plus share in the repeating cash flows. A single FLEET TUNE System should easily optimize three batteries per 24 hour period, with the recommended battery repetition rate of once every 30 days. The system is ideal for forklift operators, forklift dealers with remotely located clients or equipment leases, or entrepreneurs looking to start a remote battery service company. A telecom modified system has endured years of extensive testing and was recently approved for installation into a major telephone company’s cell tower network. www.battrecon.com

Safety Corner 10 Forklift operator training requirements Jeff Ord, Forklift Safety Training Services, Inc.

The most frequent asked question that FORKLIFTSAFETY. COM receives in their office on a daily basis is, “What Do We Need To Do To Become OSHA Compliant?” Contrary to the many confused interpretations that we hear, our answer is simple and by the book as defined by the OSHA Federal Regulation 29CFR1910.178, paragraph L, “Operator Training”. 1. It is THE employer’s responsibility to Train, Test, Evaluate and Authorize every one of their forklift operator’s. 2. Training and Evaluation(s) are the employers responsibility, regardless of previous experience or prior training. 3. All training must be site and equipment specific. 4. Driving evaluation tests must be completed and filed for each forklift operator for every forklift that they operate to include loaners, rentals or any new or used forklift’s acquired. 5. OSHA clearly states; “Certification. The EMPLOYER shall certify that each operator has been trained and evaluated as required by this paragraph L”. 6. The employer is certifying to OSHA that they are in compliance with OSHA’s training requirements and that every operator has been trained, tested, evaluated and Authorized. 7. Forklift operator’s are not certified, they are Authorized. 8. Daily Safety Inspection Report Forms must be filled out on every forklift at the beginning of every shift.

9. Training shall consist of a Complete video review of the entire OSHA Federal Regulation 29CFR1910.178, Powered Industrial Trucks, Operator Workbook, pre-shift Safety Inspections, Written Test and Driving Evaluation Test(s). After each operator has successfully completed OSHA’s training requirements and for those forklift operator’s that can demonstrate safe driving skills and practices on a daily basis, Authorization Cards and Certificates of Completion can be issued by the employer to the forklift operator(s). 10. From a liability standpoint, we recommend that the employer takes two hours every year to re-certify their forklift operator’s by providing classroom instruction and driving evaluations. Forklift operator safety training does not need to be boring or lengthy. Our simple to present and easy to understand OSHA compliant training materials require a two hour classroom instruction which is video based instruction that is interactive with the operator’s handbook. A 15 minute safety meeting that OSHA refers to as a “Lunch Box” session does not qualify or meet the OSHA training standard for forklift operator training. Good record keeping of your training and testing materials is imperative in the event of an OSHA audit or demand is made in the event of a liability lawsuit. FORKLIFTSAFETY.COM is the “Nations Leader” with one of the most informative websites relating to forklift operator safety and training. Call or log on today: 800/494-3225 or www.forkliftsafety.com

Product Preview Dialight introduces new stand-alone wireless occupancy sensors

Mast-style platform lift is compact and maneuverable

Dialight unveiled its new wireless occupancy sensor, a unique battery-powered plug-and-play sensor that speeds and simplifies installation to provide maximum lighting control flexibility and energy savings in industrial applications. Designed to integrate seamlessly with any Dialight smart lighting system, the new wireless sensor can be placed virtually anywhere within a facility, without the need to install or move cabling, for nearly unlimited lighting control options. A single sensor can be programmed to control multiple lights and groups of lights, eliminating the need to install a sensor on every light.

Presto Lifts announces the expansion of its popular LiftStik line of lifter transporters. The Model PLS53-150 features compact design, unmatched maneuverability, and powered lift making it ideal for stockrooms, assembly areas, laboratories, offices, retail stores, food manufacturing and pharmaceutical facilities. The LiftStik’s mast-style configuration places the platform and load directly over the four wheels to provide maximum stability. Using the fingertip control switch, operators can position loads at any height from 4.5" up to 53". Lift controls are conveniently mounted on the push/steer handle and can be accessed when transporting loads. Lifting speed is a fast 4.75" per second. The lift mechanism consists of a steel reinforced cam belt. There are no hydraulics, so there is no chance for messy fluid leaks.

WEPCO SmartLifter innovative vacuum lifter is now patented ™

WEPCO, Inc. announces the successful patent of its SmartLifter™ automated vacuum lifter. The SmartLifter idea was born in response to a customer’s need, leading to a unique solution and a new technology. “Our team solved the problem in a way that was so unique that is was patentable,” says Chris Paulsen, WEPCO’s CEO. There is nothing else available with this now-patented combination of side lifting, self-balancing, force-sensing handle, and other features. This ergonomic lifting tool enables the user to grip, balance, and stack heavy items with fingertip pressure — from the side only, not from the top. It can handle any pallet configuration, and even short operators can easily stack tall pallets with greater safety and productivity. www.wepcoinc.com

Raymond introduces new Walkie Pallet Truck The Raymond Corporation has introduced the new Raymond® Model 8210 walkie pallet truck featuring AC technology, which offers superior maneuverability and speed control, the flexibility to adapt to extreme environments and easy service and maintenance. When working in tight areas, such as trailers or lift gates, the Model 8210’s unrivaled maneuverability and speed control give the operator superior handling. Its exclusiveClick2Creep™ technology automatically reduces maximum travel speed while also providing a tighter turning radius for pin-wheeling or right-angle turning. And Raymond’s ACR System™ technology and static torque control provide superior speed control and transitions, especially at low speeds. www.raymondcorp.com

Hamilton crushes downtime with new no-maintenance casters

Fairbanks Scales, Inc. announces the release of its new Yellow Jacket U-Shaped floor scale, which decreases weight times by up to 50% in applications utilizing pallet jacks. This scale is an ideal alternative to traditional floor scales in manufacturing and warehouse applications where floor space is at a premium. The Yellow Jacket U-Shaped floor scale allows material handlers to capture the weight of standard and non-standard pallets and skids without removing the pallet jack. Operators can simply move the pallet into place over the scale, lower the pallet jack so the load is resting on the scale, capture the weight, and then raise the pallet jack to easily move the pallet or skid to its next location. This innovative scale reduces weight times by eliminating the time-consuming step of pulling the pallet jack out from underneath the pallet, a difficult task with traditional ramped floor scales.

Hamilton Caster is proud to introduce Spinfinity™ – a new line of heavy duty maintenance-free casters. Incorporated into the swivel kingpinless construction is special cnc-machining to host a large internal seal. The seal is made from Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and is completely enclosed inside the swivel assembly. With no outside exposure, the swivel assembly is well suited to keep grease in and contaminants out. As is customary with Hamilton, the Spinfinity casters boast extra thick forgings and proven kingpinless swivel technology for superior durability over the life of the casters. The top plate and inner raceway are one forged steel piece, not a weldment, providing unmatched strength for shock conditions. The raceways are CNC-machined and then hardened to a uniform depth. These processes assure a smoothly swiveling caster under heavy loads. All of this adds up to Spinfinity® carrying the industry’s best three-year product warranty.

Winco’s clamp mounting units in series GN 473, GN 477 and GN 480, and can easily be assembled together via the tapped holes in the magnet assembly. www.jwwinco.com

Pallet truck attachment improves ergonomics of order picking The PalletPal Walkie from Southworth Products mounts to any standard electric walkie or walkie/rider pallet truck to make order picking faster, safer and easier. Built on the proven design of PalletPal Level Loaders, the PalletPal Walkie uses a calibrated spring mechanism to automatically adjust the height of a pallet load as boxes are added or removed. The top layer of the load is always at a comfortable, convenient working height allowing employees to load or offload items with no bending, stretching or awkward posture. No tools are required to mount the PalletPal Walkie on a pallet truck. The specially designed reinforced baseframe has generous flared openings at the end of each fork channel to receive the forks of all standard electric walkies for easy pickup and drop off without binding. www.southworthproducts.com

Vacuum operated box or bag lifter is ergonomic and portable American Sales Development announces the availability of a vacuum operated jib crane lift system for boxes and bags up to 185 lbs. The system uses an articulating arm with up to 13 feet reach diameter allowing the operator to load or unload across a large work cell and lift as high as 9 feet 4 inches with little effort. The arm can be mounted to the building’s structural beams or a gantry crane. If portability is desired a portable beam mounted to a circular steel base plate is available. Tech Talk What’s that engine noise? John Gelsimino Jr., All Industrial Engine Service

Have you ever had an engine with a noise that you just couldn’t diagnose? Different engine designs have different characteristics that can cause an engine noise that is not necessarily an indication of a pending failure. The following is a quick guide that will cover the majority of engine noises and their causes.

Knock occurring at half engine RPM or camshaft speed: Hydraulic valve lifters are a common source of engine noise. New lifters may take a few minutes to pump up with oil and will be noisy until they are pressurized. A bad lifter can stick or simply be defective from the manufacturer. A faulty lifter can be isolated by listening to each rocker pivot point with a stethoscope while the engine is at idle. Also, a similar noise can occur if you have a damaged valve spring, pushrod, rocker arm or even excess valve lash. Even mechanical fuel pumps can make a similar noise at valve train speed.

Deep metallic knock:

Light metallic rap at idle and at low speeds: This type of noise is caused by excessive piston pin clearance. Similar to excessive rod clearance noisy piston pins are isolated by grounding spark plugs. However, the affect is different than too much rod clearance. Noise from a loose piston pin will actually increase in frequency with the spark grounded. This noise typically occurs after piston rings are replaced due to the additional drag on the loose pin. While these are some of the most common noise sources, remember that noises can come from areas other than internal engine parts. Drive belts, alternators, compressors, air pumps, and fuel pumps all make noise. This is why it is good practice to first disconnect the accessories and run the engine to determine if the noise disappears. To prevent overheating be sure to only run the engine for a short period of time.

This noise is caused by excessive main bearing clearance. The noise is most audible when the engine is under load, accelerating or when it is just started. Low oil pressure always accompanies excess main bearing clearance because naturally as clearance increases oil pressure decreases. This noise must be addressed quickly because failure to address the issue early can result in a spun main bearing. If this occurs the engine block will need to be align bored and this is an additional charge at any engine remanufacturer.

Material covered in this article came from various engine manuals and handbooks. All Industrial Engine Service is not responsible for any damage or failure caused by the techniques mentioned in this article. If you have any questions regarding this or any other forklift related issue please feel free to give us a call 877/303-LIFT (5438).

Sharp metallic rap when releasing or engaging manual transmission clutches:

Tube Connection Components

If crankshaft endplay is beyond the factory specifications this is the noise you will hear. This can be diagnosed by placing a dial indicator at either end of the crankshaft. Carefully pry the crankshaft from one side to another recording the total limits of travel. It’s as simple as comparing that number to the factory specification and if it exceeds then there is a problem with the thrust of the crankshaft.

Metallic rap when the engine is running under a light load: This is caused by excessive connecting rod clearance. The noise will become louder and will increase in frequency as the engine speed increases. You can isolate the defective connecting rod bearing by removing spark from one cylinder at a time. When spark is removed from the defective cylinder the metallic rapping will noticeably decrease. The combustion is what thrusts the piston and rod downward causing this engine noise.

Dull metallic rattle heard at idle and under light engine load: Piston slap is the noise associated with excess piston-to-cylinder wall clearance. On some engines the noise can disappear when the piston expands during warm-up. In this case the noise will not affect the engine’s reliability. However, if the slap remains after warm-up, piston or ring failures are possible. In this case, grounding a spark plug will not affect the noise.

Industry News How to quote a drive in/drive thru pallet rack system A Drive In/Drive Thru Pallet Rack System is an excellent solution for high density storage that can be adapted for either FIFO or LIFO inventory flow and designed to suit your customer’s needs. A Drive In Pallet Rack System is a LIFO (last in, first out) configuration which uses the same point of entry and exit for loading inventory. Drive Thru is loaded from one side and unloaded from the opposite side utilizing FIFO (first in, first out) inventory retrieval which allows forklift entry from either side.

Drive in pallet racks A Drive In/Drive Thru System is great when you have a high volume of inventory and minimal SKUs. This system consists of rails running the depth of the rack for pallet placement and allows for pallets to be stored back to back and floor to ceiling. This decreases the need for multiple aisles, increasing your customer’s storage space. Following is the standard information we ask our customers when quoting a drive in/drive thru pallet rack system: • We need to know the system required. Do they need Drive In or Drive Thru? A Drive In system only allows entry and exit on one side of the system. A Drive Thru system allows entry and exit from both sides of the system. • What is the layout? How many pallets deep by how many pallets wide by how many pallet high?

• What is the minimum and maximum weight of the pallet? What is the size of the standard pallet: depth, width and height, and what is the size of the pallet with any overhanging product: depth, width and height? The pallet height should always include the load and the pallet. • What type of pallets are the customer using and are they in good condition? We need to know this to make sure the pallet will be able to support the load while sitting on the Drive In Rails. There are many different pallet styles. The preferred pallet for a Drive In/Drive Thru System is a standard 48" deep x 40" wide GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) pallet. • What is the building clear height? • What type of warehouse environment will this be used in? Freezer, cooler or ambient temperature? Will it be placed outdoors or in a wet area? This will tell us if we need to quote galvanized or standard painted pallet rack. At WPRP, Our Goal is to Help You and if you have additional questions about how to quote a Drive In/Drive Thru Pallet Rack System, do not hesitate to contact us. Our Pallet Rack Specialists are happy to help you through the quoting process.

Industry News U.S. forklift manufacturer expanding operations Hoist Liftruck Mfg., Inc. announced plans to expand its manufacturing operations into Indiana, creating hundreds of new jobs by 2022. Hoist Liftruck will make a multi-million dollar investment to purchase, renovate and equip an approximately 550,000 SF building at 4407 Railroad Ave. in East Chicago, expanding its manufacturing operations from Bedford Park, Illinois. Originally designed for Blaw-Knox to manufacture M-60 Patton tanks for the U.S. Army, the facility has been vacant for more than 10 years. The new site will allow the company to expand its production to accommodate a significant increase of new unit orders that have resulted from several strategic contracts Hoist Liftruck has been awarded. The company, which currently employs more than 300 associates, expects to close on the property late this summer. The expansion will allow Hoist Liftruck to create additional new jobs in Indiana in the coming years. “Our East Chicago expansion represents a significant investment in Hoist Liftruck in order for us to meet our growing demand,” said Marty Flaska, President and CEO of Hoist Liftruck. “We are excited to partner with East Chicago, IEDC and the state of Indiana on this project that will be integral to our growth.” www.hoistlift.com

Industry News Toyota expands manufacturing plant Toyota Industrial Equipment Manufacturing (TIEM) recently announced a new $16 million dollar expansion and building renovation at its forklift manufacturing plant in Columbus, Indiana. Toyota plans to expand its new product development capability in the U.S.A. to improve support for the North American market. The 50,600 square feet addition will increase the total facility to 1.1 million square feet of manufacturing and support space. The new building and renovation will provide room to support human development activities, new manufacturing technology development, new product development, along with the company’s Vision 2020 strategic initiatives. The expansion includes a two-story office building, a new cafeteria, a new storm shelter & locker room and expansion space for Toyota’s on-site medical center for Associates and their families. The new building will also serve as headquarters for Toyota Material Handling North America, the North American division of Toyota Material Handling Group. Since the first forklift rolled off the line 25 years ago, Toyota Associates have built more than 500,000 forklifts. The majority of all Toyota forklifts sold in North America are produced at TIEM. Toyota will hold a ground-breaking ceremony next month and a grand opening ceremony when construction is complete next year. www.toyotaforklift.com
