Industry News WPRP expands with East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania location WPRP Wholesale Pallet Rack Products, a Maple Grove, Minnesota-based wholesale pallet rack distributor, is expanding its East Coast operations with a new location in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The new warehouse will carry a complete inventory of both new and used pallet rack, wire decks and pallet rack accessories exclusively for dealers, and will be one of the company’s primary quick ship locations. The new warehouse, which is minutes away from what was once the United Steel Products factory, is expected to open August 24 and begin shipping product at the beginning of September. With locations already established in Maple Grove, Minnesota and Elgin, Illinois, the impetus of WPRP’s new location is the development of a pallet rack shipping hub centrally located within the nation’s northeast region. Five miles from the Delaware River and Pennsylvania-New Jersey border, East Stroudsburg is geographically positioned in the heart of the Mid Atlantic, less than 200 miles from New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Hartford. In comparison to WPRP’s former Pennsylvania warehouse location in Erie, the East Stroudsburg warehouse will offer a significant freight advantage, particularly when shipping to the Northeast’s major metropolitan centers.
WPRP’s new warehouse will itself display some significant changes from the previous warehouse in Erie. The East Stroudsburg location will have more on-site staff, and will have a greater total available storage area than WPRP’s Erie warehouse. In addition to being larger and better manned than the existing warehouse, the East Stroudsburg location will have more shipping and receiving docks than its predecessor, allowing for a higher volume of product movement. The move is expected to provide a more accessible destination for most freight carriers. Founded in 2000, WPRP is a wholesale distributor for a number of the nation’s leading pallet rack, shelving and wire decking manufacturers, providing racking to forklift and material handling dealers. Along with its Minnesota, Illinois and Pennsylvania locations, WPRP has several quick ship points located throughout each region of the United States. www.wprpwholesalepalletrack.com

Industry News Hoist Liftruck enters into private label agreement with TMHU U.S. forklift manufacturer will provide private label pneumatic tire forklift trucks to Toyota Material Handling U.S.A, Inc., under an exclusive 5 Year Agreement. Hoist Liftruck Mfg., Inc., a manufacturer of high-capacity material handling equipment, announced it has entered into an exclusive agreement with Toyota Material Handling U.S.A., Inc., (TMHU) to manufacture pneumatic tire forklifts under a private label agreement. Hoist Liftruck will manufacture to TMHU’s specifications pneumatic tire products ranging from 22,000# in capacity to 72,000# in capacity under a private label agreement with its first orders expected to be delivered later this year. “Toyota has consistently demonstrated the ability to produce results with the products it distributes and we feel our pneumatic tire trucks will be an excellent addition to their product line up,” said Stu Jacover, VP Strategy and Development of Hoist Liftruck. “We are excited to partner with TMHU on this project and we are confident this will be integral to our mutual growth.”
“The high capacity forklift market is an important segment of the material handling industry in North America,” said TMHU President Jeff Rufener. “We are committed to our role as a full line supplier and we are proud to partner with Hoist to offer Toyota dealers and customers a broader selection of high capacity forklifts made in the U.S.” Hoist Liftruck, who recently announced their pending manufacturing expansion into 550,000 SF building in East Chicago, IN has experienced an influx of activity and business over the past few years thanks to strategic positioning in the marketplace, continuing growth of the economy and booming industries. www.hoistlift.com

Industry News Yale named to green supply chain list For the fifth consecutive year, Yale Materials Handling Corporation has been selected by Inbound Logistics for its list of 75 Green Supply Chain Partners (G75). The publication chose Yale for its leadership in sustainable and innovative materials handling equipment. Inbound Logistics' 75 Green Supply Chain Partners profiles companies that demonstrate a commitment to sustainable supply chain, logistics and transportation practices. Companies are selected based on criteria of measurable green results, sustainability innovation, continuous improvement and industry recognition. “This acknowledgment further validates Yale’s ongoing commitment to green initiatives,” said David McNeill, Manager of Product Strategy, Yale. “Our newest green initiative, an Advanced Performance Power System (APPS) powered by lithium-ion battery technology, offers a battery solution that is not only environmentally friendly, but provides an efficient and productivity enhancing option for our customers.” Earlier this year, Yale made headlines as the first commercially available Underwriters Laboratories (UL) recognized lithium-ion battery pack in the forklift industry. The new lithium-ion option is designed to last up to five times longer than traditional lead acid batteries, does not contain toxic acid and is environmentally friendly. With an extended run time, excellent charging capabilities and a small footprint, the lithium-ion battery provides an efficient and productive power alternative for retail, beverage and food delivery applications. www.yale.com

For years, manufacturers and brands have worked to reduce CoM as the means to reducing their net landed cost of goods to compete and succeed in increasingly competitive marketplaces; as this strategy reaches its limits, companies increasingly turn to the often more rewarding yet complex opportunity to reduce CoD.
Some of the world’s top brands are putting Eyefreight’s Saas TMS in place to boost shipping efficiencies. Utilizing Eyefreight’s patent-pending algorithms for optimizing inventory allocation and distribution planning, these companies are rapidly achieving as much as 30% reductions in net landed cost of goods without renegotiating carrier rates.

Forklift accidents can be traced to two causes – operator error, which is due to a lack of training, and defective equipment. In both cases, the employer can be held liable in a lawsuit when an employee sustains injury from a forklift regardless of cause. It is the responsibility of the employer to be certain that all lift trucks are safe, free of repair or defect, and that all operators are “trained and authorized”, as required by the OSHA Federal Regulation 1910.178. Operator training does not necessarily have to represent a major expense. It should be viewed as a means to control costs since defending even a single unjustified lawsuit would easily outstrip the expense required to provide the appropriate safety training at the outset. Safety training courses should focus on those areas of greatest risk. One of the most common causes of forklift accidents involves the operator driving too fast, particularly when moving a heavy load. This is an example of the type of accident that can be avoided by clearly establishing a comprehensive operator training program that complies with the elements of the Federal Regulation. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has reported that there were over 34,000 injuries requiring emergency room treatment as a result of lift truck accidents in 1985 alone. Many of these injuries resulted in severe, incapacitating injuries and some in the death of the operator (documented in the Journal of Safety Research. Vol. 18, pp 179-190, 1987). The overwhelming majority of these accidents resulted from operator error and could have been avoided. An earlier NIOSH report indicated that better trained lift truck operators reduced their rate of error by 70% (documented in the Journal of Safety Research, Vol. 15, pp 125-135, 1984). Factory Mutual Engineering and Research reviews the statistics of one major commercial property insurance company, reporting 86.8 million dollars of damage over a 10 year period to warehouses and plants due to the improper, careless operation of lift trucks. The most effective means to hold down insurance costs is by preventing losses from happening in the first place. The notion that loss control only means more regulations, and that accidents resulting in injury or damage are an inevitable part of business, is wrong and could be expensive to accept. Conversely, working to prevent accidents will boost employee productivity and morale, increase profit margins and hold down insurance costs. Creamer’s Corner Back to the future Mike Creamer
Long, long, long ago and far, far, far away there was a factory that made corrugated boxes. Inside this large factory was a sweeper with amazing power. At that time when I was in this factory, I saw a man walk up to this machine and climb aboard. It appeared as if he turned an ignition key. Without making a sound, this machine drove away to my astonishment. I was utterly surprised and thought to myself, that thing must be electric. As it made its way down the aisle, it turned around and made its way back towards me. On front of the hopper was a name encircles by an oval. The name inside this oval was Tennant. Tennant 240EH

That was the first encounter with any type of sweeper. The model of this machine: 240 EH, rider sweeper. EH stood for electric-hydro. That was 1975, some 40 years ago and a world away. Remember, in 1975 we, the United States, as a nation just left Vietnam. Gerald Ford was president and trying to reunite the country. And, we just felt the results of an oil embargo. Often I think that would have been the time to start developing the electric car. But the technology wasn’t right I suppose. Remember, at that time, there were only three ways to correspond with your customers. 1) By landline telephone as today, not much different. 2) In person, make an appointment or just go unannounced. That was very common for its day. Or, 3) by mail or snail mail as it is known today. There were no fax machines (at least for the average person.) There were no computers (again a dream for the common place.) So, with no computers, there were no e-mails, texting and so forth. Personal or cell phones weren’t developed yet as well. I am pushing these facts because we did have an electric sweeper and thought that was too cool. So, anyway we should get back on the subject: Tennant 240EH. This sweeper was a full size sweeper with a hopper that would handle roughly 1,000 pounds of debris before you had to dump it. Equipped with a 42 inch main brush and a 13 inch side brush it had a very acceptable 53 inch sweeping path. It also was equipped with 2, 18 volt Exide batteries as standard equipment. Its full speed sweeping with around six miles per hour was very fast indeed for its day. Today, Tennant equivalent would be the Tennant Model S20/Battery. Let’s compare these two. If you ever have questions or comments about sweeper/scrubbers, email me at creamercorner@hi-gear.com Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber.

Industry News New recruit runs into dream role at Straightpoint Inc. Camarillo, Ca.-based force measurement, load monitoring and suspended weighing load cell manufacturer Straightpoint Inc. has named Tressie LaBass customer and sales support administrator. LaBass, who recently graduated from California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo with Bachelors in Science of Business, joins a company destined to achieve 20-30% annual growth over the next five years. She said: “My mantra is work hard, never give up, which seems to synergize with that of the key individuals at the company and culture of the business itself. I was looking for an opportunity to use and develop my knowledge and skills whilst contributing to a growing company. It looks like I have been given a chance to do that.” In addition to administrative and sales duties, LaBass will take responsibility for leveraging existing operational systems and implementing new procedures to enhance the way the company and its staff utilizes workspace and equipment as a business in aggressive growth mode. “I am looking forward to getting to know the systems and current processes so that I can get to work on refining and organizing the workload for the rest of the team,” she added. Having achieved an Associates Degree and gained experience in a variety of roles before most recently returning to California from Houston, Tx., LaBass completed her studies and built a support network to help her achieve career ambitions. However, the recruitment process at Straightpoint was somewhat opportune. 2011 Raymond 445-C40TT 4,000# Price $7,850 FOB Dallas

She said: “I always run in the mornings—at least five days a week—and a business management consultant I know, who happens to be working with Straightpoint, stopped me one morning to ask how my latest recruitment campaign was developing. When I explained what it was I was looking for, he immediately thought I'd be a good match for Straightpoint.” John Molidor, the general manager of Straightpoint’s North American business, first interviewed LaBass. “I must have made a good impression because I was then offered a Skype interview with Mr. Loadlink [the pseudonym by which company director David Ayling pens his monthly blog] himself,” she said. LaBass alluded to her experiences in hotel and retail management, while referencing the importance of fitness in her life—and one recent morning run in particular. Ayling said: “We are excited to have Tressie on board. Someone with her back-ground and qualifications takes the business to another level as we gear up to grow further. Much about her suggests she will embrace our company culture and play a key role in our development in the short and long term future.” LaBass concluded: “I see great potential in Straightpoint Inc. and I am excited to join the team. I would love to be able to visit the UK and take advantage of any and all training opportunities to improve my skill set. Everyone has been so welcoming and I'm glad to be a part of the Straightpoint family.” www.straightpoint.com

Health Nudge TVH launches on-site health clinic Offering Convenient Primary Care Services, Screenings and Tests Studies are showing on-site health clinics have the most potential for positively impacting and improving health while cutting healthcare expenses. A growing trend among businesses today, the focus is now on health promotion, wellness, and an array of primary care services conveniently located at the work site. Some of the most common visits include preventative care, managed care of chronic conditions, blood pressure checks, sports physicals, and flu shots. By offering these services at onsite clinics, companies see a boost in employee productivity and a reduction in absenteeism.
Clinic Management Models
Organizations considering workplace clinics have three options: hiring third-party vendors to operate a clinic, employing all clinic staff and management, or contracting with external health care providers to manage and/or staff the clinic. Most employers are outsourcing clinic operations to vendors that provide comprehensive staffing and management because this is not their area of expertise. Predominately we see two different combinations of services offered at these onsite clinics. The “wellness model”, which typically includes wellness, preventive care and often disease management, or the “primary care model” which includes acute care, preventive care, disease management and some or all aspects of wellness. On-site clinics go beyond the acute and episodic health care visits. They offer a holistic approach from preventive to lifestyle modifications. What generates savings for both employees and employers is the ability to change patterns, such as drug prescribing, ordering of tests and procedures, and specialist referrals, along with the potential for early diagnosis and treatment to avoid emergency department visits, hospitalizations and other costly downstream complications.
New Partner: HealthStat
In 2015, TVH opened the doors of an on-site health clinic for employees at the headquarters in Olathe, Kansas. They partnered with HealthStat to serve as the on-site health clinic with appointments made either the same or next day. This on-site workplace clinic model offers much shorter appointment and in-office wait times and much
longer clinician-patient encounters. With longer clinic visits, the clinician is able to listen to patients, diagnose their conditions and discuss different treatment options with them. In addition, the clinician has time to screen for other problems unrelated to the immediate visit. TVH strongly encourages clinic use not only for employees, but for their immediate family members’, children ages 2+ up to 26 years old, at no out of pocket cost. Another additional benefit, employees can schedule appointments during their work hours, so they no longer have the added stress of trying to figure out how they can fit in a health assessment, well visit, or appointment. Employees can choose the on-site clinic as their primary care provider, which for some personnel with numerous family members, the annual savings can amount to hundreds, even thousands of dollars. This provides a strong incentive for our employees to utilize the clinic.
“In the first 13 days of opening HealthStat within TVH, we saw 110 patients. I have been involved with other on-site clinics and am impressed with such an extremely large number. This shows TVH is committed and has communicated the benefits to the employees prior to the opening of the clinic.” Kari Liggett, APRN HealthStat. We know employees want to be appreciated and TVH values our employees. Offering an on-site health clinic is just one more way we show our appreciation – providing convenience and saving both time and money for employees. If you would like to learn more about this program and health and wellness at your workplace, contact Lucy DelSarto, TVH Health and Wellness Coach at lucy.delsarto@tvh.com.

Only days after celebrating 75 years on this earth, Gary has gone to be with his Lord and savior Yeshua/Jesus. For those that knew him (or heard of him,) the variations could have been one of the many different versions of Gary Selman. No matter the version or time period you knew of him, his everlasting impact will be in our hearts for an even longer time than 75 years. In our material handling industry, his tenure of almost 50 years, the variation could have been the newbie salesman at Vogels in Brooklyn, NY in the 60’s, or as the World’s Smallest Wholesaler during his Gary K Selman Enterprises decades of the 70-80’s. Or it could have been during his renaissance of Genesis Lift in NJ, which also happens to be my entry to this beloved (and sometimes beleaguered) industry. Regardless of the company(s) he founded, or corporation he worked for, the daily lessons he taught to me and others in this industry will be forever remembered with tremendous fondness. He always sold very well, but it didn’t matter to him. It wasn’t the selling he was concerned with. I can remember lesson after lesson he would tell me. “Buy right, it won’t matter what happens next, as the right sale will come when you need it to.” If you did happen to buy or sell to Gary over the last 20 years, he would always have a plethora of forklift toys. It was his thing to give them away, and it has somewhat rubbed off on me amassing a huge collection of toys. I view them as a historical lesson, and a fascinating history too. But his reach was far beyond what this industry had to offer. Did you know he was an Elvis fanatic? Some of you do, and some might even recall his abilities to even impersonate Elvis. I remember as a kid at home, Dad would have similar outfits to the flashy Elvis of the 70’s and perform local, live concerts at our dining room area, singing the best of Elvis. The neighbors were invited! I might be biased here, but from what I remember and what I’ve heard…he was good. The scarves, belts, and the TCB (taking care of business) necklace all were present. Lest I forget about the “Elvis Car” that he purchased from Lowel Hayes in 1978. Lowel happened to be Elvis personal jeweler in Memphis and was gifted this 1977 Lincoln Mark V Bill Blass edition in April of 1977 only months before Elvis’ death. Speaking of musical talents, Gary was an accomplished guitar player and piano player – always wowing our guests during parties or family get togethers. He could always get people swaying, singing, and smiling when he started playing the piano. Late in the 70’s, he was born-again and saved in Yeshua/Jesus. Finding the Lord for him was an earth shattering event and forever changed what he would do for himself, family, and for thousands (if not millions) of people around the globe. In what has become a large ministry – Hope of the World Ministries, and Beth Israel congregation in NJ, it all started in the den of our home in NJ. A couple of chairs, a couch, some prayer & bible verses spoken and interpreted, Gary founded what has become a world outreach ministry spreading the gospel regardless of your background in religion, with Beth Israel. The humble beginnings have been replaced with a larger proper facility (the 3rd such move since its founding,) with thousands of people coming for services throughout the week. Gary would regularly minster to anyone within earshot and interest, consistently asked people where they were from to learn about culture & religion, and spread the word of hope through believing. The joy, counseling, and mentorship he gave to many can never be replaced, and I know that the congregation will be missing my father greatly, as we all will. But wait! There’s more. He was an accomplished Radio talk show host for three decades, also spreading the gospel. Once a week, he and his pastor at the time would perform for 2 hours each week on 970AM, later
being broadcast online as well. Two Nice Jewish Boys was the name of the radio broadcast, and was always interesting to listen to. Born Again Jewish & Christians talking about the bible, Jesus, and overall religion on an open forum. He even let me open the show when I was just a kid, sit on his lap and talk into a huge microphone to announce my dad’s name. There are so many more other facets to this great man (devoted husband, little league coach, provider and father of 4 kids, community church leader, etc.,) but for me, he was Dad. Growing up in those first 17-18 years, the chance of getting away from the parents, being free on your own, was the #1 goal. Yet, here, I find myself trying out some part-time jobs from when I was 15, to eventually working with my Dad in some crazy wholesale forklift business. He came down the hall of our house, gave me a hand written list (no computers, no smartphones, etc.) and said, “start making some calls to these people. I haven’t heard from or spoken to them in a long while.” I had no idea what to do, how to say it, what to say, etc. I had a small list of forklifts he had in stock (some with prices, some without,) and I was just plain nervous. My first call was to Buck Caldwell. I can still remember how bad I was. But I went through the list, gave Dad my notes (to which he gave me an entire history of right and wrong,) and that is what started me (and apparently now stuck with,) in this crazy, roller coaster industry that we call Materials Handling Equipment. At my age currently, and my introduction to this business in 1994, I shouldn’t know what a Waukesha engine is, a Pettibone Mercury is, or why CLARK made a C20P in the 60’s. But I do, and the reason I do is because of my Dad. He taught me not only the various in-and-outs of a sales process, but the actual guts of the industry as well. The history, the specs, the why, etc. ,came from him. It has been polished over time throughout my career with other accomplished managers and owners I worked with, but it was my Dad that gave me the joy and happiness in this business. It was the war-stories of deals, or arguing which is worse (2 stage mast, 4,000lbs. capacity, 4wheel electric, OR, well…nothing else is really worse than that in wholesale…) or just reviewing what’s going on in our industry. He always remained in wholesale, while I transcended into retail and operations. It allowed for many great conversations about the struggles between rental/sales dept. and service. Should you have family in this business, or be in business together, cherish it. He wanted me to take his company over and build it, but I didn’t have the wherewithal that he did. Only Gary Selman could be a wholesaler in my family, and he was amazing. Why you ask? Because almost every month over the last 4-5 years, he would call me 2/3rd’s into the month and tell me he’s having the worst month ever, not sure if he can continue, etc. Most of the time, he called back sometime weeks later and would tell me he had the best month ever. He always turned it around, figured it out, and made it happen. Regardless of the business you are in, it’s an amazing accomplishmentto take something from nothing, and have fun doing it. Love you, Dad. We will ALL miss you, but continue to celebrate you! Baron If there is a story you would like to share with his family, we have setup a special email address at: remembergaryselman@gmail.com. Should you not want to email them, I have continued to keep his phone – so please call and I will look forward to hearing from you. As Gary would say, God Bless.

Industry News Columbus McKinnon completes acquisition of Magnetek Amherst, N.Y.-based Columbus McKinnon Corp., a material handling products manufacturer, has completed its acquisition of Menomonee Falls-based Magnetek Inc. Magnetek manufactures digital power and motion control solutions for material handling, elevator and mining applications. It is one of North America’s largest independent digital drives, radio controls, software and accessories suppliers for industrial cranes and hoists, and has counted Columbus McKinnon as a customer. The $188.9 million transaction, announced in July, is expected to provide enhanced technology, innovation, branding and expertise to Columbus McKinnon. The brand and operations will remain intact at Magnetek, and its president and chief executive officer, Peter McCormick, will continue to lead the subsidiary. The company has about 340 employees. While Columbus McKinnon, which has 2,735 employees at 17 global manufacturing facilities, does not yet have any firm hiring plans, it expects to add additional employees at Magnetek as it grows the business, said Gregory Rustowicz, chief financial officer and vice president of finance at Columbus.
Columbus McKinnon expects the acquisition to be accretive in the first full year following the combination, to the tune of about 40 cents per share. The acquisition will offer $5 million in cost synergies in the next fiscal year, but will cost between $7.5 million and $8.5 million to complete in the current fiscal year. "With this accretive combination, we can more fully address the continued global trend of industrial and commercial businesses searching for ways to improve productivity and safety in their operations, said Timothy Tevens, president and chief executive officer of Columbus McKinnon. “We are all very excited about the expanded market potential this transaction provides. We command a measurably broader market for Magnetek's technologies and the addition of their power control technology impressively enhances our product offering. This compelling blend of products and know-how enables us to bring 'smart' lifting and moving solutions to our customers." www.cmworks.com

Tech Talk Properly diagnose your customer’s engine problems John Gelsimino Jr.
Engine diagnosis methods. Several techniques can be used to properly diagnose your customer’s engine problems. This month’s article will cover the engine diagnosis methods including: compression tests (dry & wet) and the leak down test. These tests are straightforward yet provide valuable information useful for diagnosis.
Compression Test
This test measures the dynamic pumping pressure of the cylinder when the crankshaft is rotated. This test should be performed when the engine is warm – not cold and not hot.
Dry Test
Install the compression gauge into the spark plug hole and crank engine over 5-10 revolutions. For consistency, crank the engine over the same number of revolutions for each cylinder. If one cylinder has a lower reading this indicates the problematic cylinder. The dry test should yield readings within 10% of manufacturer’s specifications. If no compression information is available, use 100 psi as a reference test pressure. However, it does not indicate whether the cylinder or piston rings are the cause. The wet compression test is effective at determining the source of the problem.
Wet Test
With the spark plug removed, squirt about one teaspoon of 30-weight motor oil into the spark plug hole. Take a compression reading and observe the difference between the wet and dry tests. • Readings from the wet test should not increase by more than 10 percent, cylinder to cylinder. • If the compression increases with the wet test, the results identify the problem as the piston rings and/or cylinder walls. The theory behind this test is that the oil is providing a wet seal for the rings. If they are not sealing on their own they will when the oil creates a seal and an increase in compression will be observed. • If the compression stays the same, the results point to the valve train. The theory is that when the rings are sealing, the oil will have no effect on compression and therefore the valves are most likely the cause of the problem.

Leak Down Test
This test pinpoints specific leakage. This test uses a set of pressure gauges with a regulating device and can quantify the percentage of leakage. This is a static test that takes more time to perform compared to a regular compression test. The ignition system should be disabled and/or grounded to prevent shock or fire. The engine must be at top dead center where both intake and exhaust valves are closed (compression stroke). Before pressurizing the cylinder, be sure that you can prevent the piston from moving in the cylinder (engine from turning over). Pressurize the cylinder through the spark plug hole at around 100-115psi. You will be able to measure the percentage of pressure leakage. • Leak from crankcase indicates the piston rings are not sealing or a burnt piston. • Leak from the air intake indicates a bent or burnt intake valve. • Exhaust leaks from the exhaust manifold or muffler indicates a bent or burnt exhaust valve. • Leak from the radiator indicates a leaking gasket or cracked cylinder head or block. • If air is leaking from the companion cylinder it indicates a blown head gasket. Properly functioning cylinders show a cylinder to cylinder leakage of less than 8%. A greater drop should prompt you to investigate further. Each test provides different diagnosis information and takes a different amount of time to perform. By using either method of diagnosis you will be able to provide your customers with accurate information and continue to provide the highest level of quality service available. Information in this article has been provided from various engine rebuilding handbooks. Always use caution when performing these tests. All Industrial Engine Service does not assume responsibility for any consequences that arise out of its application. This month’s article was written by John Gelsimino Jr. of All Industrial Engine Service. Industry News Manufacturer evaluation proves long-term durability of Hyster® Tier 4 engines Hyster Company has announced the results of its Tier 4 engine teardown inspection undertaken to prove the long-term performance and durability of the engines. As part of the testing, Cummins Inc., who collaborated with Hyster in the integration of the Cummins QSL9 engine into Hyster’s Tier 4 powertrain, performed an engine teardown inspection to assess the in-service durability and achievable life-to-overhaul compared with larger Tier 3 engines typically used in the same applications. The disassembly and in-depth examination of the engine at close to 10,000 operating hours, revealed the major components, fuel system, turbocharger and block to be in near-perfect condition after three years of operation in a heavy duty application. These results suggested that the Tier 4 engine could complete 20,000 hours of operation before an engine overhaul may be needed, which is equal to the life-to-rebuild of the larger 11-liter Cummins QSM11 Tier 3 engine, working on a similar duty cycle. “This test proves to the entire industry what Hyster, Cummins and our customers using Tier 4 engines have known all along: Tier 4 engines combine all of the performance, durability and toughness traditionally associated with Hyster® lift trucks, with significantly enhanced fuel economy and sustainability benefits to achieve compliance and help increase profitability,” said Brett Schemerhorn, President of Big Trucks for Hyster.

Hyster and Cummins have led the industry charge in developing smarter, right-sized engines. These engines, with smaller displacement, produce similar or greater horsepower and torque while consuming less fuel and producing fewer emissions through an integrated design. Beyond meeting emissions requirements, the two leading manufacturers have combined to develop products designed to optimize performance, while reducing total cost of ownership. Additional features designed to drive fuel economy include: • On-demand cooling to help reduce fuel consumption and noise • On-demand load-sensing hydraulics to help reduce fuel use and increase the life of hydraulic system components • Empty seat engine shutdown to reduce non-productive idling • Automatic throttle-up to enable the engine to work in its most efficient “sweet spot” • ECO modes, which are selectable drive modes to balance power requirements and fuel consumption • Idle management to reduce engine rpms when truck is not in active operation Prior to the teardown, Cummins tested the QSL9 on a variety of performance factors, including power delivery and fuel consumption, as well as emissions and torque to ensure that the engine remained within acceptable tolerance levels, and to ensure that only normal service (no repairs or unscheduled maintenance) were needed. An added benefit of the Tier 4 engines over that of Tier 3 is that they do not require any specific mid-life service intervention. Cummins exhaust systems are equally robust, protected against the most severe shock loads and are designed to achieve the same life as the engine. “Cummins design philosophy is to utilize only proven technologies and components that we know will meet the in-service reliability and long-term durability demanded for the toughest equipment applications – and the advantage of taking this approach is reflected in the impressive results of the QSL9 Tier 4 teardown inspection,” said Hugh Foden, Executive Director for Cummins Off-Highway Business. www.hyster.com

Industry News How to quote a Carton Flow Pallet Rack System A Carton Flow Pallet Rack System is a FIFO (first in, first out) picking system that is a great solution for slow to medium moving SKUs. This gravity flow system utilizes inclined roller platforms that gently move the remaining cartons forward when the front carton has been picked. A Carton Flow Pallet Rack System is an efficient way to store a high volume of inventory in less space. Racks can be consolidated to eliminate aisles, increasing floor space and maximizing warehouse storage capacity. With independently moving cartons, a carton flow system eliminates the time and labor needed to manually move cartons as needed on static rack systems. Cartons are always in the front position ready for full and/or split case picking. Following is the standard information we ask our customers when quoting a carton flow pallet rack system: We need to know the system required: • Roller Style Track – such as Unex Span-Track and Mallard Cart Track used for heavier boxes • Wheel Bed Style – such as Unex Flow Bed and Mallard Dyna-Flo which is the most versatile used for mixed box sizes • Wheeled Track – such as Mallard’s Rack Track which is less expensive for lighter boxes
Brute Lift Booms
What is the layout – how many bays, how many levels, how many lanes per level. • Layout of the area where the Carton Flow will be installed including the ceiling height. • Number of SKUs needed in the system. This helps to determine how many different products will be stored and the best layout. • What is the pick application? Will it be picked by each piece, full carton or both? What are the sizes (length/width/height) and weight of the cartons? Will this be a retro-fit into rack? If it is a retro-fit, we will require a layout of the current system with the bay width, rack depth, number of rows and specifics on frames and beams being used. At WPRP, Our Goal is to Help You and if you have additional questions about how to quote a Carton Flow Pallet Rack System, do not hesitate to contact us. Our Pallet Rack Specialists are happy to help you through the quoting process. www.wprpwholesalepalletrack.com

I was reminded this weekend (twice) how the sign wave of life actually works. This curve has been mentioned in my live programs for years and it made the headlines this past weekend. The first example comes by way of a horse. A very fast horse. A very beautiful and elegant four-legged creature who goes by the name of American Pharoah. (Spelled wrong correctly) American Pharoah overcame incredible odds earlier this year by winning the Triple Crown. This was the first time this has happened since Affirmed won it in 1978. Here comes the wake-up call. American Pharoah “lost” this weekend at The Traver’s Stake in Saratoga, NY. A sure-thing ... was not to be. Even the best in the business can’t win them all. The second head-scratcher came from the Garden State at a PGA Golf Tournament. (Edison, NJ.) Jordon Spieth, the #1 golfer in the world and the well-spoken, polite, young phenom that everybody has come to love and admire, failed to make the cut after Friday’s second round of The Barclays. Earlier this year he won The Masters at the tender age of 22. He soon rose to #1. On Friday he left the club house without fanfare. Even in the golf business you can’t win them all. Both of these highly trained and super athletes fell short of the expected mark. Both were trained to win. Both were capable of winning. Both were expecting to win. Both lost. What does this have to do with you and your business? Plenty. (No, I am not calling you a loser.) Your business requires a huge investment of both time and money to succeed. There are no shortcuts to reach the top. The pain and early-going frustration experienced early on is sure to wane as you polish your act. But you will never completely put the possibility of failure behind you. Life (and your business) is accurately portrayed as a sine wave and just as sure as I am typing this, as you go down, you will soon be rising again. As you begin climbing up to the winner’s circle, you are sure to soon take a dip in performance. In baseball, this is known as a slump. It happens to the greats, and it will happen to you. You can count on this as sure as you count on the sun rising each morning. Here is where the story takes two turns. Jordan Spieth will be back hitting golf balls before you know it. He will learn what he can from this week's wake-up call and be stronger than ever. I am certain this particular failure will help improve his game. As for the pony, he might not be lacing up his running shoes again. In fact, the decision now is whether to keep on running or to be put out to pasture to serve as a stud. (Yes, even polished athletes have to call it a day when aging muscles fail to follow mental instructions.) In both instances I found myself sharing in the disappointment. But in both instances, I was reminded how life works and how the sine wave dictates our lives. Perhaps Kenny Rogers said it best when he sang: “You have to know when to hold em, and you have to know when to fold ‘em.
