Industry News Two rental leaders inducted into Rental Hall of Fame The group of 21 rental business owners that gathered together during March 1955 in Moline, Ill., and created what today is the American Rental Association (ARA) knew they could gain knowledge from each other and improve their own rental companies with their new wisdom. As ARA prepares to honor its 60th anniversary with a celebration at The Rental Show® 2016 in Atlanta, the two rental leaders who will become the latest inductees into the Rental Hall of Fame have built long, influential careers based on sharing the knowledge they’ve gained to help others create their own business success. Lew Hudson, chief executive officer of Lew Hudson Sales, Lawrenceville, Ga., and Gene Rahll, Dalhart, Texas, retired from ABC Rental Center and Rabern Rental Center, will be formally inducted during The Rental Show’s keynote session. ARA created the Rental Hall of Fame in 2000 to foster an appreciation of the historical development of the equipment rental industry and the leaders who have made the industry what it is today. Each year, nominations are accepted to recognize individuals who have made a substantial impact on the industry at the national or international level. The 2016 keynote session will be Monday, Feb. 22, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Georgia World Congress Center. Here is more on the two newest inductees. Lew Hudson Lew Hudson first got involved with construction equipment on the sales side in 1966, working in Mississippi and later Texas. He discovered he had a passion for the industry, and his sales and management skills allowed him to enjoy success. In 1977, he and his wife, Wanda, decided to move back to Georgia to be closer to family and Hudson opened his own company. He founded Lew Hudson and Associates, a manufacturer’s representative business focusing on the growing construction equipment rental market. The business quickly took off, and he expanded both his territory into the Southeast U.S. as well as the product lines he represented. His philosophy was to learn everything about a rental owner’s business, to help guide the owner into new products and new markets. Hudson also has advised many manufacturers that came to him to sell their products to the rental industry, helping them to determine if their products fit the rental channel and would be a successful rental item. His rental knowledge has benefitted many throughout the industry. The company continued to grow and, in 1980, opened an office in the Atlanta metropolitan area with an inside sales department for providing customers with answers quickly and easily – a first for a manufacturer’s rep agency. They also looked for additional ways to better serve their customers, which included offering marketing pieces for rental stores to use for promoting their businesses. As the company grew, Hudson moved into a full-time management role and his son, Darrell, took over his sales territory. Today Lew is the CEO of Lew Hudson Sales, while Darrell is president. The company has an inside sales staff, an outside sales force of 13 and serves 17 states throughout the Southeast and Southwest U.S. Hudson promotes new and existing products to his customers to keep them on the leading edge of what’s happening product-wise. He’s also adamant about service to customers after a sale, and encourages manufacturers to provide product training to help rental owners more effectively and safely rent a manufacturer’s product.

Hudson has been actively involved in the rental industry, as well as in his community by supporting a number of causes. A testament to his leadership philosophy is the low turnover of employees at Lew Hudson Sales. The mentoring and time he has invested in his people is apparent in how they present themselves within the industry, and how they touch those outside the industry in other walks of life. Gene Rahll Gene Rahll began his rental industry career in 1968, when he recognized a need for a general rental store where he lived in the Baltimore, Maryland, area. He first opened an A to Z Rental Center franchise but, by the early 1970s, decided to open his own business, ABC Rental. In doing so, he also began to utilize the leadership and management skills that have earned his induction into the Rental Hall of Fame: developing and motivating the individuals who work around him. As Rahll began ABC Rental, he started forming business partnerships. His guidance helped influence the rental market growth in the Baltimore area. Two of those Rahll influenced – his nephew, Lee Lightner, now president of ABC Equipment Rental, and Steve Berner, now president of Rabern Rental Center – started working for him as teenagers, and were the source of referring new employees when Rahll needed to hire additional staff. Eventually Rahll oversaw the opening of nine locations for ABC Rental in the Baltimore area, and eight of the employees he helped mentor later partnered with him to start their own rental businesses – including Lightner and Berner. As these businesses grew, the new owners purchased Rahll’s interest in the rental stores. Knowing the value of business contacts and networking, Rahll was one of those involved in creating the Maryland Rental Association in the mid-1970s, in which he served in every officer position through the years. He also became actively involved with the American Rental Association after attending his first ARA convention in 1972. He served as Region Two Director on the ARA board as well as on the General Tool Council and show seminar committee. He received ARA’s Distinguished Service award at The Rental Show in 2009. In the early 1980s, Rahll and his wife, Louise, relocated to her hometown of Dalhart, Texas. After visiting a rental store in nearly Amarillo, he knew the area needed a better operation. He called one of the employees he mentored in Baltimore, Steve Berner, to see if he’d be interested in moving to Texas to open a rental business. He was, and Rabern Rentals began in 1984 with four employees and $200,000 in inventory. His unique approach to mentoring young employees and helping these rental entrepreneurs build their own businesses by providing both advice and financial assistance has led to a Rahll “rental family tree” of 31 rental locations that are in business today. Even in his retirement, he still holds active roles in 13 companies and inactive roles in seven others. Rahll also have been active within his community, serving as mayor of Dalhart from 1989 to 2005. He and Louise also developed the Louise and Gene Rahll Scholarships in the early 2000s, which have provided college scholarships for more than 75 students graduating from Dalhart High School. www.ararental.org

Become the Exception Are you treating your customers like dogs? Mike Marchev

Having recently been introduced to a shameful statistic, I thought it timely to give you my opinion on this subject. See if you can swallow this dose of reality: When interviewed, travel agents believe they retain 78% of their paying customers. When interviewed, paying customers believe this number is closer to 35%. Let’s not quibble of a percentage point or two. The message is that travel professionals believe their retention rate is a lot higher than it is. Agents are losing customers at an alarming rate … and finding it more difficult to recapture market share. In the interest of time, I will provide my secret remedy to this unnecessary dilemma. Here goes. Get ready for a “glaring-flash-of the-obvious.” Drum roll please: TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS LIKE DOGS. Pet owners know exactly what I am talking about. Those of you who have been in the company of “pet owners” know what I am talking about. The rest of you may be thinking I have gone off my rocker, and I have no plans to convert you today. As for the pet people, I need say no more. You get the picture and are endorsing my position as I wrap up this article. As for the difference between “customers” and “clients,” a prospect becomes a customer when they buy something. Anybody can sell anything to anybody “once.” The first purchase is “nice.” The second purchase is “meaningful.” But it isn’t until the third purchase that a customer becomes a “client.”

Quality Fast Certified

When you come upon a new prospect, think about treating them like a dog, and then, focus on ways you can develop a relationship that will result in three transactions. That’s my opinion. I’m just saying … Become the Exception - Mike Marchev is a marketing humorist who has the skill to motivate. He shares his personal experiences and lessons in a fun, light and refreshing fashion through his monthly articles. Learn more about Mike at www.marchev.com.

Industry News UWF supply chain logistics management degree gains momentum In Fall 2015, the University of West Florida launched a standalone B.S.B.A. degree program in supply chain logistics management in response to student and workforce demand. UWF offered its first logistics course in 2005, using materials from top programs at Pennsylvania State and Michigan State universities. Soon after, in 2006, a certificate in supply chain logistics was added, followed by a logistics specialization within the marketing degree in 2009. A major gift by the Bear Family Foundation for the UWF logistics program in 2013 contributed to the creation of the standalone degree. The first graduates in supply chain logistics will receive their degrees at this Saturday’s commencement ceremony. Both supply chain logistics and marketing majors with logistics specializations have increased 29 percent, according to Dr. Scott Keller, logistics and marketing professor. Certificate enrollment has also increased and entry-level logistics classes reached capacity in Fall 2015. “We add new students to the program every week,” Keller said. “Students see our graduates receiving multiple job offers with high starting salaries. The word is out, and the enthusiasm among our majors is skyrocketing.” Peter Ralston, who came to UWF from Iowa State University to help shape the program, says a lot of thought was put into creating a degree path that would prepare students to be the next wave of

supply chain and logistics professionals, capable of managing dayto-day operations or analyzing data related to procurement and transportation. “Students seem to be attracted to the major because of the dedicated faculty, a known practical need for the degree, the ability to use the degree with any career in any location and the success of previous logistics specialization students and graduates at finding a job and beginning a successful career,” Ralston said. Mike Juchniewicz is among the supply chain logistics students experiencing such success, having recently been offered a job as a manager within a logistics distribution fulfillment center at Amazon. “Coming to UWF has honestly been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Throughout my studies of supply chain logistics, ample opportunities have presented themselves to me,” Juchniewicz said. “My studies at UWF have truly taught me how much I am capable of doing and how much my knowledge and skills are worth to companies all around the world.” Keller says UWF students enjoy nearly 100 percent job placement in the logistics field. Graduates have found work with QMotion, Ascend Performance Materials, Fastenal and Avalex in Florida, as well as nationally at C.H. Robinson, PLS Logistics, J.B. Hunt Transport, Crane Worldwide Logistics and more. Job opportunities include, but are not limited to, logistics management positions in railroad, import and export, airfreight, ocean carriage, motor carriage, freight sales, fleet and distribution centers. The program is perfectly situated to offer the region, the state and the entire U.S. a supply of highly qualified graduates in a field where demand is growing. UWF logistics professors are among the best and brightest in the country, all having taught in top logistics programs prior to joining UWF. In addition to traditional classroom lectures, supply chain logistics students benefit from field studies, viewing logistics operations first-hand by partnering with local companies such as QMotion, Lewis Bear Company, Saab and others. They also collaborate with Pensacola High School’s International Trade and Logistics Academy for special projects and tours, like visiting the pipe-laying ship Global 1200 the last time it was in port. “We want to be our region’s leader in supply chain logistics management education and one of the nation’s very best programs, too,” Keller said. “Our logistics professors are highly dedicated to student success and the success of logistics in our region.” In 2016, the department plans to launch a supply chain logistics management specialization within the online MBA degree offered by UWF. www.uwf.edu/logistics

To show ClearSpan’s belief in the quality of our tension fabric buildings, our manufacturing facilities are housed in our own 160'W x 320'L Hercules Truss Arch Building. ClearSpan was founded with the mission of providing the highest quality products at the most competitive prices, with exceptional customer service, directly to the municipal, marine, agricultural, equine and warehousing communities, a goal they have stood by since 1979. ClearSpan sells directly to our customers — there's no distributor or middleman. The ClearSpan process and ClearSpan employees contribute to their success. ClearSpan Fabric Structures is the natural choice when it comes to building and storage needs. Any application challenge can be solved with customized solutions for both domestic and international industries. Designed in conformance with international building codes, ClearSpan buildings are engineered, manufactured and constructed with the sturdy structural integrity. They stand behind their work and promise extraordinary care and service. ClearSpan is dedicated to providing only the highest quality products for any and every building we construct, no matter the size or complexity of the project. ClearSpan’s process starts with the customer. Upon initial inquiry, customers speak with a Truss Arch specialist, a highly qualified team member who will act as liaison throughout the process of purchasing an engineered fabric structure. The Truss Arch specialist listens to needs and goals for the structure's application, and then makes recommendations based on their experience and knowledge of regulations. Together you and the specialist determine the specifications and customizations needed for your ClearSpan Fabric Solution. Once the fabric structure's specifications have been approved, the engineers take over. The ClearSpan engineering team turns the structure's customizations and building requirements into one cohesive plan. Using the most updated Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, ClearSpan engineers design the fabric structure's frame. Depending on wind- and snow- load requirements, along with other building code factors, they determine the appropriate steel truss design. The engineers take into account all calculations for customizations, such as additional height, ventilation and sizable doors. From these designs the instructions are created for our manufacturing team to start fabricating the structure. ClearSpan Fabric Structures provide energy-efficient, economical solutions for a variety of applications, including bulk material storage, equine riding arenas, warehousing, equipment storage, waste facilities and more. Each building solution features abundant natural light and spacious interiors without support posts that could hinder operations.

ClearSpan Fabric Structures allow users to save on construction costs by often keeping installation timelines shorter than one week. Since these buildings have minimal foundation requirements, costly concrete foundations are not necessary. The structures can be permanent or temporary, and are easy to relocate. ClearSpan Fabric Structures are available in round or gable styles with building sizes available from 20' to 300' wide and in any length desired and also feature a 20 year warranty on the cover and a 50 year warranty on the frame. ClearSpan's buildings of 1,000 uses currently function as salt storage buildings, horse riding arenas, equipment storage, warehouses, athletic facilities and more Hybrid buildings offer the option of steel or fabric side walls with the proven durability of a Hercules Truss Arch Building. Buildings are available up to 160’W for any application and feature an industry leading 20-year warranty on the cover and a 50-year warranty on the frame. The fabric cover and side walls are available in several colors, and their permeable properties make the structure extremely energy efficient. The polyethylene cover allows the transmission of abundant natural light, significantly cutting costs that would otherwise be needed for supplemental lighting. The ClearSpan metal building is designed and built to any need and can be engineered to meet any required building codes, as well as snow or wind loads. The metal building blends in with any existing building, making the structure aesthetically pleasing and a great addition to any complex. Buildings are available up to 300’W for any application and feature an industry-leading 50-year warranty on the frame. One of the quick options for the anchoring of all ClearSpan structures is Helical Anchors. These anchors are classified as 100 percent temporary, but can remain as long as needed without replacements. The Helical Anchors involve minimal site work and do not require costly concrete or a poured foundation to anchor the building. Lastly, the anchors are environmentally sensitive, because they can be removed without disturbing the surrounding area. www.ClearSpan.com

Health Nudge The path to a healthier you Lucy DelSarto, TVH

Now that the holiday season is behind us, many are noting the physical and psychological impact of the high calorie consumption from family gatherings and social outings. The result can leave a lasting impression including weight gain and feeling lethargic. Instead of saying “Oh well,” this is the time to say, “Enough! I can. I will. I do.” Action is required! Success doesn’t come to you, you go get it. If not now, when? Five easy lifestyle tips Prevention is an outdated concept. The new concept is creating wellness. Wellness is about improving quality of life and living with vitality. Here are 5 Easy Lifestyle Tips to enhance your well-being… for the Health of it!

“need” foods 80% of the time. This includes fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats. The other 20% of the time, you can choose to indulge. Be mindful of your portions and choices. 5. Create the right environment Your home and work environment can either sabotage or support your efforts. What food and snack items do you have within reach? Do you have sneakers or comfortable shoes available for walking breaks? Drink up. Keep a glass of water or a water bottle within reach at all times. Clutter brings confusion and drains energy. This results in giving up and making poor choices. Do you need to purge and organize your work and home in order to simplify your life?

Just start it Your future health is mainly determined by the choices you are making today. Start small, but definitely start, and believe you can live a healthy life. Value yourself. We take care of what we value most. Most people treat their cars better than their own bodies. We’re talking about a lifestyle of good health. It’s not a start-and-stop thing. There is no silver bullet. This is a way of life – every day! The beauty is you get to reap the rewards today and in the future. DCM = Daily Choices Matter. If you would like to learn more about health and wellness within the workplace, please contact Lucy DelSarto at lucy.delsarto@tvh.com.

1. Positive thinking Your thoughts can be toxic to you. Surround yourself with positive affirmations and inspiration. Change your thinking and you can change your life. 2. Planning Start a routine of planning. A slow cooker, more commonly known as a crockpot, is a simple way to prepare meals. Not only a time saver, but the calories from a home prepared meal over processed or fast foods will be a real weigh saver. 3. Get moving and connect with others Make a pact with yourself that you will break the sitting mode and get moving every day. Sitting is the new smoking and combined with the previous point of eating convenient processed foods, our health has been dramatically, negatively impacted. Buddy up! Whether it be with a family member, co-worker, friend or a four-legged friend, having an accountability partner will increase your success. If the weather is bad, find a gym, mall or inside location that provides open space for walking or exercising. Consider tracking your steps with a wearable walking device for added incentive. 4. Live by the 80/20 rule The key to success in a balanced diet and lifestyle is living by the 80/20 rule. This makes it sustainable. There are “want foods” and “need foods.” Choose to focus on eating

Tech Talk The proper way to add a forklift attachment Brian Colburn, Forklift Training Systems

During the last few months I have seen a number of forklifts that have unapproved forklift attachments and thought it might be a good idea to address the proper routes for getting an attachment added correctly and safely. It is very common to see forklifts with side shifters, fork positioners and other heavier attachments such as paper roll clamps, carton clamps and push pulls. One thing that end users must keep in mind is that adding any type of attachment will require a small amount of work on their part. This is one case where a little work up front will save a lot of time and frustration down the road. I have seen a number of forklifts carrying seriously heavy paper roll clamp attachments that still state on the nameplate that they are using “forks only.” In some cases this would mean that the forklift’s nameplate may be off by many thousands of pounds, creating an unsafe situation for everyone involved. The OSHA standard describes what must occur when making additions or modifications to any forklift. To paraphrase, they basically state that modifications which affect the capacity, stability or safe operation must not be performed without the written consent of the manufacturer. They go on to state that any changes to the lift must be also reflected in corresponding changes to the forklift’s plate, tags, decals, etc. If the attachment was installed at the factory it should be calculated on the nameplate, but if the attachment is field installed then the end user shall request that the forklift be marked to identify

the attachment and show the weight and capacity of the new forklift/ attachment combination. Lastly, the nameplate and markings must be maintained in a readable condition. If I had a dollar for every unreadable name plate I see in the field I would be a very wealthy man! One great thing about forklifts is that they can be used to do many different jobs and come with a huge variety of attachment options. One bad thing is that you must follow the correct steps or you expose your operators to danger and your company to liability. If you are buying a new lift and attachment combination, you will have little trouble getting the dealer and the factory on board to ensure the forklift is properly labeled. If you are trying to add and attachment to an existing forklift, especially if the forklift is older or if the attachment is unique you may find this process very challenging to say the least. Here are some recommended steps to follow for the latter case: 1) Contact the local dealer for the brand of forklift on which you are intending to add the attachment. For example, if you have a Yale, then contact the local Yale dealer, since the Cat dealer will not be of much use in this situation because they would not have the Yale factory connection or the willingness to make such a change on a competitors unit. 2) Stay in touch with the dealer during the process. Dealers are very busy and many times something such as changing a plate on a 15 year old unit is not deemed a priority, especially if they did not sell the attachment, or if the customer is not using them for parts or service. You may have to pay for this service, depending on your relationship with the dealer in question, but you should expect them to take action on a timely basis. It is likely they will need to come see your forklift and attachment to get the model, serial number, mast information and other critical data to provide to the factory. If a dealer is not responsive your next step should be to contact the factory directly to explain your situation. 3) If the manufacturer of the forklift is out of business, if you can get no response from the dealer/factory or if the response is negative, you still have one last option. OSHA has a letter of interpretation dated 3-30-04 in which they discuss the option for the end user to hire a registered professional engineer to test and approve the modification. Professional Forklift Engineering Services does a great job at this type of work and can be reached at 843.532.6469 or www.forkliftcapacitycalculator.com Forklift Training Systems is a leader in forklift safety training and related products, they can be reached at info@forklifttrainingsystem.com or 614-583-5749. Industry News Choosing Interlake Selective Pallet Racks Mecalux was founded almost 50 years ago in Barcelona, Spain. With a 2,150 square foot work space, Mecalux set off to produce light shelving. Due to its innovation, advanced technology and broadening of product lines, the company quickly spread across Europe and then to the United States, with the purchase of UFC Interlake Holding Co. in the US and Mexico. Interlake Selective Pallet Rack is among the most popular racking used today. Its versatility provides many options for warehouses that carry a variety of product types. With Interlake Selective Pallet Rack, your customer has total accessibility to the product, pallets can be handled individually, and the racking can be adapted to any product volume, weight or size. These advantages make Interlake Selective a superior choice for many different applications. Interlake Mecalux Selective Pallet Rack frames are manufactured of high-strength steel in both bolted and welded configurations and finished with a cataphoresis paint process. With this process, the frames are electro-statically emerged in epoxy paint to ensure that the paint covers every surface, providing superior protection against corrosion. The bracing and footplates are welded to the frames to provide maximum durability and resistance to twisting under load pressure. Frames are available in a wide range of capacities and can be configured for seismic zones.

Beams are roll-formed in both slotted and unslotted, with a 1 ⅝" step for holding accessories such as wire decking or pallet supports. The beams are covered with two coats of paint, then oven baked. All Interlake Selective beams are manufactured to current RMI specifications. Perhaps the shining star of the Interlake Mecalux Selective Pallet Rack System are the end plates. Beams are connected to the frames and held in place with the Piston Lock Automatic Locking Device. This creates a secure damage and tamper resistant connection that maximizes system capacity. The device can be easily rearranged when applications are reconfigured. At WPRP, our goal is to help you and if you have additional questions about how to quote a selective/structural pallet rack system, do not hesitate to contact us. Our pallet rack specialists are happy to help you through the quoting process. www.wprpwholesalepalletrack.com

Safety Corner 10 ways to keep winter from winning Jason Fancy, forklifteverything@gmail.com

While some of you will bask in a relatively mild winter, others will share a collective grimace with me when we see the flakes start falling. I have already worked in snow a couple times this fall. Unarguably, the winter weather makes our job more challenging. However, there ARE things we can do to keep our customers rolling, and our jobs a bit easier. There are 3 main areas of concern are: Starting, operability, and traction. Deficiency in any of these will mean compromised useage, higher costs, and potential danger to operators. Let’s run through a basic winter check. Performing these now will help you avoid a chilly callout when the mercury drops. 1. Start with the starting & charging system Test the battery with a load tester. Any battery that is “borderline” is going to be problematic in the cold. Plus, it is cheaper to deal with it now, rather than risk a service call and downtime when the frosty mornings start. Make sure the terminals and cables are tight, clean, and sealed. Next item is doing a test for excessive starter draw and sufficient alternator output. Again, if it is questionable, advise your customer and let them make the decision based on the possibilities. Some customers will be proactive, some will pinch pennies… But they won’t be able to blame you when the truck won’t start and they have an urgent cargo to move! 2. Cooling system and heater I like to start with a pressure test. Use the pressure the cap is rated for, and then inspect for leaks at the hoses, radiator, water pump and LPG system. Confirm the level is good and that the coolant is in good condition. Check concentration (to avoid freeze-up) and ph level (to avoid head and gasket damage). Grab the hoses and make sure they are not spongy (usually indicates contaminated or acidic coolant) or hardened (indicates excessive temperature). Then run the unit for 5 minutes. Check to confirm unit is warming up properly. A thermostat that isn’t working properly will keep the unit from working efficiently, and in cold climates, may cause regulator freeze-up.

5. Tires Tires need to have good tread depth, and siping will help quite a bit on icy surfaces. I used to maintain a fleet for a large warehouse grocery store, and the tires were identical in all except that one unit had siping. It outperformed everything else on ice, snow, or slush. If you operate in an unpaved area, chains are an option. Be aware that many forklifts do not have enough clearance for regular chains, but cable-type chains work very well as long as you don’t have operators with more boot than brain. 6. Lights Good lights are a big factor in safe and efficient operation when the days are darker. They also help in snowy or rainy conditions. There are some really good LED options now that outshine and outlast conventional lighting, without breaking the bank. I have had nothing but positive feedback from customers who have upgraded to LEDs. 7. Fuels & Oils LPG units are more prone to tar issues in the winter weather, so clean or replace the regulator as required. Diesel units will need the water separator drained. Be aware that diesel fuel is temperature sensitive. Very cold temps will cause wax particles to cloud and congeal. Use a high quality additive like Howe’s to avoid clogged filters and injectors. Engine oils need to be changed to manufacturer spec for the temp range it will be operated in. I recommend reading this article about oils. 8. Starting aids Confirm proper operation of chokes. Test glow plug and manifold heaters to make sure they are working well. 9. Accessories There are many devices available to enhance utility in the winter. Consider a snowplow for light duty clearing needs, and a gritbin for icy conditions. 10. Operator Education

If the ignition system is out of adjustment or in worn condition, it will often begin to show up as a hard start when the temperature plummets. Check plug condition and find out when tune-up was last due. Keep in mind that plugs that look good don’t mean the wires and cap are good. Be thorough, it really doesn’t take long. And change the LPG filter when you perform a tune-up.

This is probably the most critical, and most overlooked of all. Operators new to know how to warm up a cold unit properly. Start and idle for 5-8 minutes with no load, then lightly operate each function to allow hydraulic oil to circulate. I have seen very expensive repairs required because of operators firing up and launching without warmup. What tips or questions do you have about winter operation? If you have found this post to be informative or helpful, why not subscribe to the blog and stay up-to-date?

4. Block & hydraulic heaters

www.forkliftcentral.net

3. Tune-up

In truly cold areas (like here in Northern Canada… I have worked in -55 degrees Fahrenheit! Yes, below zero) it’s a good idea to use heaters for the engine coolant (and oil pan heaters for diesels) and the hydraulic tanks. If you have these installed, check the cord prongs with an ohmmeter. There should be between 15-50 ohms resistance when testing between the main prongs, and it should be open circuit from either prong to the ground prong.

Industry News Less is more: The seven information management questions every organization must address to thrive in the digital age Many companies continue to experience cutbacks in workforce, but not in workload. For the remaining employees, accessing valuable company information becomes increasingly complex, whether it's a password, an email from a vendor documenting price agreements, or crucial information about a client contract. The computer has allowed us to generate information as never before, thus increasing our ability to create a mess. Poor information management creates inefficiency. Inefficiency costs money, causes unnecessary stress, precipitates poor customer service, and directly costs untold thousands of dollars. Michael Dell says that by 2020 the world will generate 35 times as much data annually as in 2010. Unfortunately, many companies never learned to manage paper, and most are not doing any better with electronic documents. Particularly frightening is that if you have 1000 pieces of paper, you can hire someone to sort through them looking for specific words, and eventually they will find them. If you have 1000 electronic documents stored in a variety of places from employees desktops (not backed up!) to external drives, they may never be found -- and when they are, the company may no longer has the capability of reading the data! It’s not a matter of IF, but WHEN the information management meltdown will take place, unless you address the issue now. The following are seven essential questions to address about the information in your business. What information do we need to keep? Start with your company's mission and goals. What business are you in? What information do you need to reach those goals? And, of course, what information do regulators require? You can jokingly state that the word “archives” should be spelled “our-chives” since so many companies keep information that actually belongs to other organizations. In what form? Most information today is already in digital form. In many organizations, that information can be stored in more than one program. Consistency is the key. Only a small portion of the information that exists on paper today is worth converting to a digital format. As the quantity of information received and generated by business increases, electronic storage options become essential. It is simply not cost effective to use paper for long-term storage of business information. For how long? Employees are scared to throw anything away, because the boss may ask for it, and many bosses won’t take the time to make a plan for records retention. When they do, the decision often breaks down in the implementation. The advantages of electronic storage can become disadvantages, as companies painfully learn when called to account for e-mail messages sent years previously. Regardless of the reasons, the results are the same: overstuffed filing cabinets and hard drives. Many companies hold file clean-out days, and but often fail miserably. Why? Because management has failed to create the methodology, mechanics, and maintenance to enable and empower its employees to make the decisions required to eliminate unnecessary information.

Who is responsible for filing it? One client was spending thousands of dollars annually on file storage. When they looked into the situation, they identified that one big source of the problem was that multiple members of the team were filing the same information for the same project. The problem was quickly resolved by identifying a specific member of each team to be responsible for filing the appropriate information. Every large company has an information systems person. While some large companies have a person in charge of records retention, they are often brought into the picture only after the files are full or the information is no longer used on a regular basis. Small businesses often ignore the issue entirely. Why not put someone in charge of making and implementing decisions about current information? It is essential to create a system so if a person leaves suddenly, the company is not left in jeopardy. Who needs access to it? A major challenge in information management relates to the liability created if/when unauthorized people access private data. An advantage of an electronic filing system is the ability to determine who has access to what documents. It is unnerving to walk into offices and see paper and electronic documents accessible to people who have no reason to access them! How can we find it? The three components to an effective filing system are: 1) File methodology - what documents are to be filed 2) File mechanics - how documents are filed 3) File maintenance - when documents are eliminated If any of the components are weak, your filing system will be an ongoing frustration instead of the resource it can and should be. How is it backed up? A client lost 30 years of research because of a miscommunication with the IT department. A survey by Adobe of 5000+ professionals found that 43% have lost important electronic documents, and 70% of those losses were caused by a computer or hard drive failure. Having a backup plan that is checked on a consistent basis is an important part of an information management system. Clutter is postponed decisions. Countless companies are faced with the problem of hundreds, even thousands, of boxes of "archives" in storage rooms or off-site locations. Unfortunately, when management realizes the cost and the risk involved, and finally decides to do something, the people who created the paper are long gone, and current employees have little energy or motivation for making decisions about something that doesn't affect their ability to leave work on time. While there is no quick fix for years of postponed decisions, avoiding the problem in the future is easy. Today's mail is tomorrow's pile, so to get results, ignore the mistakes of the past. Create a system today to enable employees to make good decisions about the information they receive. SCRUBBERS & SWEEPERS INCREASE PROFITS

The anatomy of a walk-behind sweeper Michael Creamer

The anatomy of a sweeper varies as wide spread as people. There are small ones and large ones. There are fat ones and there are skinny ones. There are weak ones and there are strong ones. There are pretty ones and there are ugly ones. I don’t know about the last one, but some would think there are pretty sweepers out there I suppose. Anyway, in my mind there should always be three items that are apparent to the anatomy of a sweeper. 1) Must have a main broom 2) Must have a side broom 3) Must have a dust hopper. Without these three components I don’t know what else this machine would be doing, obviously not sweeping. But some would argue that machines out there without these components still are themselves sweepers. Some people may call the Bensink Rotary Broom a sweeper, “NOT.” It is just a mechanical push broom although it works well for the purpose it was intended. And that is to prep a surface before seal coating. How about the Buffalo Turbine Debris Blower. Some people may also consider this a sweeper, “NOT” as well. It is just a very powerful superhero leaf blower. Of course it is more than that and does its purpose equally well. So let’s move on to what constitutes a walk behind sweeper. Having both self-propelled and vacuumized hopper are very useful options, they are not necessary to determine the makings of a walk behind sweeper. The Haaga Sweeper I consider a very useful walk behind sweeper. They offer a wide variety of types being among them: push type, without power and an electric powered. They are very small, lightweight but versatile in large areas, for commercial use or for home and garden use. They are reasonable priced. If one is looking to upscale to a more severe environment, one has a very good choice on the industrial market. These sweepers to look at would be the FactoryCat Model 34, Clarke BSW28, advance Terra 28 or the Tennant model S10. Of these sweepers, what stands out is the Factory cat because it is an all-steel sweeper built for tough environments. And finally, one has to mention the Tennant Model S10. The Tenant S10 walk behind sweeper is a 3rd generational machine with proven designs. The 1st generation was the Model 42HD. This was available not only in battery/electric but with an 8 HP Kohler engine in gasoline or LP. One powerful sweeper, I was always confident it could be used in any environment, no matter the harshness. When I sold them, potential customers would ask: Will it pick up and before they said anything else….Yes, I would answer. Because it would sweep about anything. The 2nd generation that followed was the Model 186. Still the basic machine had a metal frame with the lids and covers made of plastic, which always cracked and broke. At this time the battery version was becoming more prevalent and the gasoline option eventually ran its course. A very sad day. Today, the 3rd generation S10 is still a very comparable walk behind sweeper with its counterparts, although it is now just available in battery. Creamer's Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear's Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber. For your comments or questions, please e-mail Mike at creamerscorner@hi-gear.com or call at 1-800-346-2319.
