The lovely little town of Delray Beach is situated along the pristine beaches of south Florida between the towns of Boynton Beach and Deerfield Beach, 15 miles south of West Palm Beach. (That’s a lot of beaches.)

That smell wafting in the background is from Delray and it has nothing to do with tidal wash or expired sea creatures. It is coming from Old School Square where the Annual Garlic Festival is taking place. I went. I browsed. I smelled.

Between bands I found myself wandering through the many booths selling various products that up to now, you never knew you needed. From aprons to old signage on weathered drift wood, it was all there. The food booths were heavily populated and each one had a garlic fragrance that would eventually lead to an extra clothes washing when you returned home.

It was the food that drew my attention. Ice cream, lemonade, steak sandwiches, hot dogs, pizza, chicken, pasta, beer and many more selections for every taste of “jones” imaginable. That’s when it hit me. I began watching the thousands of people strolling without a designated destination and each one had selected a different treat to consume. Different strokes for different folks in full technicolor.

The message here is 1) Be prepared to smell like garlic when going to a garlic festival. 2) You can’t be everything to everybody. People have different tastes, likes and dislikes. Your market is your market and should consist of people who have a taste for what you have to offer. This is the way it was in Delray on Sunday, and this is the way it will be for you for the rest of the year. The garlic pizza was not competing with the garlic ice cream. They were just targeting different tastes.

The common thread however is the lesson my dad taught me years ago when he said, “Mike, you can’t sell from an empty wagon.” The garlic dogs had to be present and available in order to sell a garlic-laden hot dog. You have to be present to offer and provide your travel services.

Now I have to run. It is time to put my clothes into the dryer.

Creamer's Corner Applications – choosing the right machine Michael Creamer

Determining what machine (sweeper/scrubber) to recommend for a particular application is one of the more difficult consultation that I have experienced. We are going to look today at one example of application, function, machines and brands.

I received a call from my client stating he had 260,000 square feet that they were going to relocate to. This was going to happen in approximately 60 days to 2 months. So, time was of the essence.

Since I was not familiar with his business I had to find out everything I could about it. The nature of your customer’s business is of utmost importance that it could possibly determine what machine will work and which one will not.

One example of this would be a food distribution center. You would never recommend a diesel or LPG unit for this application.

Instead an electric or battery unit is the norm.

So, let’s go item by item of my recommendations in this situation.

1) The 260,000 square feet building was total square footage. The building broke down and I listed it this way: A. 150,000 square feet / Warehouse Space B. 10,000 square feet / Research Area C. 80,000 square feet / Manufacturing D. 20,000 square feet / Office.

2) I asked how often he was going to clean the floors. He stated that the manufacturing and warehouse area would be scrubbed 2-3 times a week and the research area every day. The office would be once a week. At least, this was their plan and I felt this was a good starting point.

A. The 150,000 square footage for the warehouse space had to be further analyzed. The big question here is not square footage but isle width. Not all company’s are the same with isle width at 60" or others with 36" (or 3 foot) wide. In this instance, they were going to have a width of 46 inches.

There are two machines that I already have in mind: 1. American Lincoln Model 7730 Sweeper/Scrubber was introduced two years ago. This machine is a small version of the model 7760.

2. Tennant Model 8210 which is a light sweeper and mostly scrubber and time tested. It’s for forerunners were the 510E and 515 Scrubber.

In this situation I feel he needed a 1/c engine LPG instead of electric.

B. Next, let’s look at the 10,000 square foot Research Area.

Actually there are two scrubbers that I recommend. The Tennant 5700 Walk behind with disc brush and the Advance 325LX (Lynx). I like both of these scrubbers because they have sold quite a few and they are time tested. Parts are within reason and readily available. The Advance scrubber is somewhat less complicated making it easier and less expensive to repair.

C. Next, the 80,000 manufacturing area is a combination of open areas and close quarters. Since we have this combination I reasoned that the Model 8210 could handle the open areas and the walk behind would fit in the close areas.

D. As far as the remaining area in the 20,000 square feet for office space it was square tile. Actually I would recommend this; use the walk behind scrubber and install pad brushes.

New PSC redesigned electric heater for lift trucks

Toyota named Supplier of the year

PSC announces that it now has a special redesigned electric heater for lift trucks. Ordinary golf cart heaters do not hold up very well, as many lift truck users have found out. Typically they are turned on high and left on for a long periods of time, unlike golf cart heaters. Lift trucks have no suspension, so the heater has to be made to handle constant jarring. Both 36 and 48 volt models are available The heater has high and low settings. The PSC heater comes with a detectable two conductor fused cable. This heater will substantially increase the time spent in cold rooms. They are easy to install on the crowing (dash) as it only has one bolt.

Not long ago, we were doing some driving evaluations at a customer location; most of the operators were highly skilled and we had no problem finding them competent to operate the lifts and certifying them for their environment. There were, however, a few operators that complained about the difficulty of the things we asked of them during the hands on evaluation phase. They stated “I don’t usually lift items that high, or I don’t often have to load a trailer, or I never have to drive in reverse!” They also stated that the last time they were evaluated they were exempt from having to do those more difficult skills by the trainer at the time. That statement provoked several thoughts, the first was that they might have to perform those tasks at some future time when no one else was available to do them, or if they moved to another department where it might be required.

The second was that we don’t offer “junior” forklift permits for forward only or for just the first two layers of storage rack.

When surveying a customer location, we look at the basic skills an operator must possess, including things like proficiency and the ability to get things done on a timely basis. Taking 20 minutes to stack a pallet may be ok in some applications, but in a high cycle environment it would never cut it. The trainer must look at the demands that will be put on a specific operator, on a certain type of lift and in a specific application and then determine if the person can perform at that level. If they can not perform at that level, the answer to getting them “up to speed” is supervised practice operation. For some people, lifts and applications this may take hours and for others maybe weeks. There is no “instant” forklift operator, no matter how badly production would like to have them up and running; rushing the process can spell disaster for either the operator or a co- worker.

Trainers need to take their jobs seriously and look at the operator’s skills and not their personality or other aspects. Sliding everyone through, no matter what the skill level is a thing of the past and one that we don’t want to continue for safety’s sake. Our advice to trainers is to train people thoroughly, invest time in getting them up to speed, and then expect a certain level of proficiency before handing them the keys.
