Become the Exception A lesson worth learning Mike Marchev

If you are an honest, hard-working business professional who has more than a modicum of interest in helping others get through this whacked-out world we live in, then I say it is your obligation to let us know you exist and are here to help us. The secret is, (and keep this to yourself as it seems very few people know this) you have to do something. • • • • • • •

Piggyback your story off a well-publicized current event. Call local media personnel and ask them, “How can I help you?” Always keep the audience in mind. Build your media mailing list TODAY.• Do not make this thing harder than it has to be. Publicity is not advertising. Find more fun ways to grow your business.

Every business professional knows the value of visibility, consistency and of being positioned as the go-to resource. I would be preaching to the choir if I began waxing eloquent on any one of these most important business truths. But then again, if these truths are so self-evident, why do so many business professionals fail to get the message? Why does it take an uncanny number of whacks on the head for so many smart people to finally get it. The simple fact is that, during a great portion of our adult lives, we all assume the role of “AIS.” This is a softer, easier-to-accept term for the highly educated physician’s name for the ever popular and

quickly spreading Adult Idiots Syndrome. I want you to get this and get it good. PUBLICITY is free and it is a good thing for your business. Go get some. But publicity is not about you or your business. It is all about the reader, listener, viewer, or recipient of your release. If you finally find the time to do your business some good at the expense of pushing a pile of papers from point “A” to position “B,” then I want you to tell the recipient something (anything) they might want to hear. Like how your company has recently announced the time-saving, vacation-saving, marriage-saving Special Report titled How to pack for a two week vacation without breaking your back or the bank. (There is not a married man over 30 who will not pay a week’s salary to read these nuggets of interest you jammed into this little jewel.) When you introduce new and exciting information that your targeted audience can both identify with and find interest in, you are onto bigger and better things in the business world. You are now becoming the go to resource. The media experts will be glad to include you in their programs because you are helping them. And according to me, that is exactly how the process is supposed to work. Think of a whole bunch of stuff your audience wants (needs) to know. Remember that “wants to know” is more powerful than “needs to know.” And while you are thinking, I want you to begin building your personal media database. This is nothing more than a list of local media contacts along with their address, phone number, email and if you are really getting into this thing, their golfing handicap. Then, begin writing from the heart. Shoot from the hip. Use little words. (But always, always, always be ready to dodge a handful of darts from some professorial guru-types who do not take misused hanging participles or gerunds requiring possessives very lightly.) Industry News CMAA revises specification for services performed on overhead lifting equipment The leading authority on overhead lifting equipment, Crane Manufacturers Association of America (CMAA), has revised its Specification No. 78 titled Standards and Guidelines for Professional Services Performed on Overhead and Traveling Cranes and Associated Hoisting Equipment. CMAA is an independent incorporated trade association affiliated with MHI. Its specifications are widely acclaimed and the revised version of Specification 78, in addition to other CMAA documentation, has been greeted by much fanfare from industry. The specification is divided into six sections covering, general information; technical qualifications; jobsite safety guidelines; crane inspection and maintenance; genuine OEM (factory) parts; and crane service classifications. CMAA representative Dan Beilfuss said: “Spec 78 was written with a primary purpose to recognize overhead traveling crane service and the service for associated hoisting equipment, as an industry worthy of having guidelines and standards for providing high quality, professional services performed by safety-minded, manufacturer-trained and certified technicians.” The specification contains several revisions to a document originally published in 2002. CMAA has added a minimum number of hours of relevant work experience required for crane service technician qualifi-

cations. Similarly, it has added a minimum number of hours of work experience as a crane service technician required for crane inspector qualifications. Both of these roles now require a measureable amount of related work experience rather than a subjective statement, Beilfuss explained. For example, a crane technician and crane inspector should have a minimum of 2,000 hours of relevant work experience and training related to maintaining, inspecting, servicing, repairing and modifying cranes. CMAA has also added a new table that shows a thorough list of pre-shift inspection items; added a root cause analysis chart in section five that will help guide readers through a process to analyze and take corrective action to reduce equipment failures; and added appendices for illustrations of double and single girder cranes in addition to the CMAA runway alignment chart from Specification Nos. 70 and 74. The easy-to-navigate contents page gives readers the ability to find new and existing information to support their knowledge. Nowhere else can overhead traveling crane and hoist professionals get access to such comprehensive data compiled by leading authorities and manufacturers. www.MHI.org/CMAA

Business Profile AMETEK Prestolite Power celebrates 100 years This year marks 100 years since Prestolite Power industrial battery chargers first set the global industry standard. Originally manufactured by the Hobart Brothers Battery Charger Division, its first charger, the HB Battery Charger, was built primarily by skilled laborers, who witnessed firsthand the very beginning of the technology. When the industrial battery charger industry began one hundred years ago, battery chargers basically consisted of a motor that generated an electrical charge. They were all mechanical and very inefficient at charging batteries. American manufacturing was at its height of importance, and companies often employed the entire population of some small towns. While times have changed and assembly lines have been updated with the latest technology, the early adapters of battery charging technology developed the core methods that are still used. Today, AMETEK Prestolite Power offers the broadest range of industrial motive power chargers for lift trucks, forklifts and other utility vehicles used in manufacturing, distribution, BigBox retail facilities, warehouses and more. Improved data collection, application of precise controls and high efficiency now serve as the cornerstones for battery charger technology across the industry. Fleet management software and cloud based software is also vital to maximizing warehouse efficiency as it allows the operators to see the status of which batteries are losing charge. Prestolite’s most recent industry advancement was designed specifically for the needs of a market no other battery charger manufacturer had addressed. It is the Atlas charger, a sturdy, cost-effective option tai-

lored for lift truck batteries operating for the Latin American market, where power supply can often be unreliable. The Atlas charger is tough enough to withstand harsh warehouse environments and challenging manufacturing conditions. The Atlas charger is designed to meet the significant demand for 208 and 240 AC voltage chargers. It uses advanced IGBT high-frequency power conversion circuitry to provide efficient, dependable service. The charger has been simplified to produce more power from the same form factor and features a single DC voltage and DC amp-hour output. It also does not require additional programming, as the unit’s configuration allows the display to be available while lift truck operators work. What does the future look like in the battery industry? As the supply chain has expanded considerably globally, so has the demand for product increased, which has led to more pressure on warehouses to run as efficiently and smoothly as possible. Jim Lichtenberg says, “AMETEK Prestolite Power foresees efficient battery chargers that can reduce downtime, last as long as possible and use the least amount of power possible playing a key role in sustaining and maximizing productivity within warehouses around the world.” That is why Prestolite Power has concentrated its efforts towards its opportunity charging concept because it is crucial in warehouses today as it leverages a lift truck operator’s break time to recharge battery power while the batteries are still in the lift truck. It also wirelessly keeps track of efficiency, existing power and other key parameters that help a warehouse run smoothly with reduced downtime and significantly less space. Fleet management software and cloud based software is also vital to maximizing warehouse efficiency as it allows the operators to see the status of which batteries are losing charge. Prestolite Power has positioned itself to stay ahead of the impact that new technologies is having on warehouse operations by striving to continue to advance its battery management system technology. This monitoring technology helps prevent over-charging batteries, which can ultimately lead to a shorter battery lifespan, by constantly tracking battery conditions and making sure the charger terminates on target. Since its inception, Prestolite Power has sought to provide innovative, industry-leading products that help its customers maximize productivity in their environments, and its plans for the next 100 years include paving the way for the pursuit of the needed advancements in battery charging technology. AMETEK Prestolite Power also just presented its top dealer partners with awards in April at its Annual Dealer Meeting held at the Fontainebleau Resort in Miami, Fla. The company is very proud of the quality of its dealer network, which continues to deliver leading edge solutions to this very competitive market. “Celebrating this 100 year milestone for Prestolite Power, it is evident, now more so than ever, that the longevity and success Prestolite Power has had is made possible by the solid relationships it has with its customers and dealers,” adds Jeff Harrison, Director of Marketing and Sales for AMETEK Prestolite Power. www.prestolitepower.com

Creamer's Corner Keep your machine fresh – no Ziploc® required Mike Creamer

“Prepare with common sense” is how I answered an e-mail approximately a month, or so, ago. The question was, “Can I store a sweeper up to a year safely and how do I store one? I answered, of course, that you could, however, prepare wisely. If you are storing in an area where towing or hauling is required, let’s go through those procedures first. I am going to use a Tennant 385 sweeper as the example because that was the machine used in the e-mail request. One can push or tow the machine if it is not running. The main propelling pumps have a towing valve to prevent damage to the hydraulic system when the sweeper is being towed. You must turn the valve 90 degrees clockwise before any towing is performed. Of course you can push the machine from either the front or rear, however, only tow it from the rear. The hydraulic system probably would be damaged if these procedures were not followed. If hauling a sweeper on a rollback, I prefer to load it in reverse. Always remember to put the main brush and side brush in the up position before loading. The machine can be tied down once on the rollback at the front and rear of the machine. The front tie-down is above the front tires. The rear tie-downs are located on both sides of the taillights under the rear bumper. Make sure the parking brake is set. Now that you have reached your destination, and have it unloaded, choose a wise spot for storing your sweeper; an out of the way area.

Three things to keep in mind are: 1. 2. 3.

a level area a cool area and, it must be dry

To prepare for storage you must know how long the storage is to take place. Whether it be: 1. 2. 3.

Up to 30 days 30 to 90 days 90 days to one year (or more)

1. Up to 30 days: Always make sure you dump the debris from the hopper. Try to clean the hopper as best one can. Change the engine oil. Put the main and side brush in the raised position. The machine must be in a cool, dry area. Put the parking brake on. Make sure the hydraulic fluid is on the “Full Mark” on the dipstick. 2. To store machine 30 to 90 days: Perform all of the above six items. Remove the spark plugs. Pour three ounce of 90-cc engine oil in each spark plug hole. Remove the ignition coil wire. Turn the engine 8 to 10 times to distribute this oil to the cylinder walls and pistons. Install new wires and plugs. Drain the gasoline out of the carburetor. 3. To store machine 90 days (up to one year): Perform all of the above items. Drain the engine oil completely. Drain the coolant from the radiator and engine. Close the drain cocks in the engine coding system. Drain the gasoline completely from the carburetor, fuel tank and fuel lines. Jack up the machine and block the machine to secure its position. Again, choose a level area. This procedure prevents the tires from acquiring flat spots on the tires. Have you ever seen an operator sweeping with flat spots on the tires. Ha! Ha! I just have to laugh, which leads me to another story; no, better not. Maybe next time. Cover over with a good heavy tarp and tie it down. After, taking these steps you could theoretically store this machine for years, however, I would not recommend storing it, and I would recommend selling it. Safety Corner

1) Any unit manufactured with a belt better have one as good or better in place. 2) If they were not made with a belt, then you should be contacting the manufacturer and asking if a retrofit is available to make your lift safer. If they offer one you must take advantage of the offer. On a side note, older electric units need to have the battery positively contained before belting the operator in or the sliding battery might kill the operator in a tip over situation. 3) OSHA will enforce the use of seatbelts through their “general duty clause.” So you can get a fine, big deal you might say. In the U.S. about 25% of the 100+ fatalities involve a tip over situation. We see and hear about so many statistics that we forget these are 25 real dead people that did not have to die! They were someone’s Dad, Mom, Brother, Sister or friend. I have heard many stories about people getting killed or horribly injured as the result of being on forklifts that didn’t have belts or just not wearing the belt that was there. On the other hand, I have never heard of an incident where a person wearing a belt was killed or that anyone was more seriously injured as the result of wearing a belt. This should be a wake up call for companies, trainers and operators around the world to start wearing and enforcing the use of belts, because the life you save might be your own, or your friend’s or your child’s.

I do not know all the regulations across the globe or how people react to seatbelts abroad, but I can tell you how it is here in the U.S. OSHA does not mention the word “seatbelt” in 29CFR1910.178, the U.S. forklift standard, but they do make mention of having to train the operators regarding the contents of the operator’s manual, which now almost always would have instructions regarding seatbelt use. They also have several letters of interpretation, which say some basic things that I will paraphrase below:

July 2016

TIRE PRESSES

Forklift seatbelts

Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems When I was a kid in the 1970’s, I never worried much about seatbelts or what might happen if I didn’t wear one. When I became a teenager in the 1980’s, it was still not a big deal, since I was used to motorcycles and tractors that didn’t even have them. In the 1990’s, it became law in certain parts of the U.S. that you had to wear them or risk a fine; once again, no big deal since I could afford the fine. Only when my wife pointed out to me what a bad example I was setting for our new baby boy did I change my habits. She told me “if he gets hurt or killed because he sees you not wearing your belt and does the same, I will never forgive you.” I started wearing my belt that day and only a few years later it saved my life in a serious head on accident, in which I was not at fault but would have been killed without the belt.

Walking meetings also provide an opportunity for co-workers to discuss agendas while brainstorming, as creativity flows from allowing the body to move rather than being confined to a chair around a conference table.

• 5000 to 50000lb capacity • 4 direction drive control • hydrostatic drive • full cabin design

To further enhance employee wellness, TVH opened an active workspace area in May. Employees can go for a stroll or a ride anytime during company hours, reserving a treadmill desk or stationary bike desk for a minimum of 15 minutes up to a maximum of 60 minutes. Workstations are equipped with laptops and remote access. In addition, the space also offers collaboration and work areas.

“The new active workspace aligns with our culture. Wellness is a priority at TVH, the new active workspace is a way to continue to make strides together,” CEO Els Thermote said. “I have been using a treadmill desk in my office for months. It helps me to stay focused and feel better and I want to share that opportunity with everyone.” “TVH is dedicated to the health and well-being of our employees and has worked hard to create a positive environment that champions an active and healthy lifestyle,” said Lucy DelSarto, health and wellness coach at TVH. The TVH wellness program also features an onsite fitness center, gym membership reimbursements, onsite health clinic, yoga classes, weekly chair massages, walking challenges, fresh fruit delivered weekly and an onsite wellness coach.

Creative workspace increases movement, morale and more Have you ever been sitting at your desk with the intention to complete one more task and find an hour or two has gone by? Sitting, or rather lack of movement, has become the new smoking in terms of health related issues. Our bodies were not meant to be in any one position for hours on end. When we sit or stand all day in the same position, the body is learning to be immobile.

Industry News HTI Technology acquires Klauber Machine & Gear HTI Technology, Inc. announced that it has acquired Klauber Machine & Gear, Co. on June 1, 2016. This acquisition will combine HTI Technology’s expertise in AC and DC motor and drives systems with Klauber’s technology and market leadership in AC and DC gear motors. The companies’ complementary technology and market capabilities will enable motors, drives and gearmotors to be combined into application-engineered powered motion solution packages, giving our customers better performing and better value solutions for their power applications. “With this Klauber acquisition, we are able to bring world class gearing design and production capabilities into the HTI solutions family,” said John Paul, CEO of HTI Technology. “By combining Klauber’s very strong fractional horsepower gear motor products with American Control Electronics’ drives and controls technology (acquired in September 2015) and HTI’s AC, DC and Brushless DC motors and mechanisms offerings, we will be able to work with our global customers to understand their powered motion needs and to offer complete application engineered solutions to meet those needs. We can now provide our customers’ required power with HTI motors, reduce the speed and increase the torque of these motors with Klauber gearing, and then dynamically vary the users’ equipment speed with ACE drives. This enables HTI to do the complete powered motion systems integration work for our customers’ engineers, freeing them to focus on their overall equipment design.”

“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to join Klauber’s outstanding team and product capabilities with the HTI team,” said Frank Parker, President of Klauber. “Both of these businesses have strong product offerings, high quality manufacturing capabilities, deep knowledge of our customers’ applications, and dedicated and knowledgeable employees. As a combined business, we will be perfectly positioned to combine our strengths into innovative systems that meet our customers’ needs, with the global scale to serve even larger markets. This is a great move for our customers and our business.” Klauber Machine & Gear will continue to operate from their current location in Pacific, Missouri, outside of St. Louis. Frank Parker, President of Klauber, will report to John Paul, CEO of HTI. Frank will also become a board member and shareholder of HTI and will help to formulate and guide our strategy as a combined entity. HTI Technology, headquartered in Nashville, TN, is a global company that produces AC, DC and Brushless DC motors, gear motors, and motorized assemblies for appliance, industrial, water purification, entry access, agriculture, recreation and other end markets. With operations in the US and Asia, HTI serves a global customer base with motors and mechanisms that are custom designed to meet their customers’ demanding applications, and manufactured with strict quality control systems. www.htitechnology.com

Industry News 12 Things Your Forklift Would Tell You if it could talk 1. If you trained your operators, there would be much less product damage. 2. If you gave me a PM and Tune-up, I’d run a whole lot better and save you money on down time 3. They make a lot of attachments that would help do my job more safely, efficiently and in less time. 4. I get thirsty and as a battery I am the heart of this forklift. Water me regularly and I will reward you with hours of use. Get me a battery watering system. 5. You always wait for me to break down when there is an issue. If you called for service at the first sign, I probably could get through till the service tech comes or you can plan for me to be down rather than me quitting on you mid-shift or mid-load. 6. That guy from PMT who comes around has some good ideas that would help our efficiency. 7. I’m tired and lonely. You work me hard. A 2nd unit or electric jack would help us and do wonders; and I will last you a lot longer. 8. Sometimes I can’t see and people don’t know I am coming. Make sure my backup alarm, headlights and strobe lights work. Did you know that PMT can even install REAR facing headlights for when I travel in reverse. And they have this COOL thing called a ‘blue light.’ 9. Maybe we don't need another forklift, but short term rentals from PMT will help us do inventory and manage big projects. They even have rent to own. 10. I know you like to take care of me and I appreciate it. PMT Forklift carries all the parts you will need to keep me running.

11. We are growing. Some racks would let me organize our supplies and products for easy picking. 12. When it comes time to trade me in, if you keep up with everything I just told you, I will be a lot more valuable for resale or trade in. And though I dread the day you retire me, you are in BETTER than great hands choosing PMT forklift to pick my replacement.

Mark DeLeon is the operations manager for PMT Forklift. Family owned and operated for over 35 years, PMT Forklift has been serving the Long Island & New York City forklift & lift truck customers with top brands such as Mitsubishi Forklifts, Linde - Kion Forklifts, Big Joe, Blue Giant, JLG, Tennant, Presto, Vestil and other brands like Cascade, Rightline. Company aims to curb forklift-related pedestrian injuries Every three days, someone in the United States is killed in a forklift-related accident, and nearly 80 percent of forklift accidents involve a pedestrian. Tackling these disturbing statistics head-on, Keytroller, a designer, manufacturer and supplier of electronic safety and weighing devices, has unveiled its latest innovation, the FOREWARNER. When mounted to a forklift or other moving vehicle, the FOREWARNER projects a solid blue or red tightly focused spot on the floor, behind or in front (or both) of the vehicle. This unique light spot is clearly visible to pedestrians and other vehicles in the area, alerting them to the nearby presence of the forklift. www.keytroller.com

Keytroller unveils affordable remote equipment monitoring Countless companies are faced with the real and often costly predicament of how to monitor and track the location of their equipment in remote jobsites. Solving this issue, Keytroller, a designer, manufacturer and supplier of electronic safety and weighing devices, has unveiled the CYBERWATCH SAT – a satellite wireless hour, alarm and location meter designed for remote locations. Machinery is heavily used in remote locations like mines, logging sites, drilling rigs, off shore oil rigs and international ships. These applications typically don’t have cellular or WiFi connectivity and monitoring their usage is expensive and troublesome. Tackling these dilemmas, the CYBERWATCH SAT provides equipment monitoring from anywhere in the world, without the need for a SIM card or local wireless plan – at less than $40 per month.

Industry News Save money on freight and avoid damage Freight is one of the great uncertainties and wildcard variables when it comes to buying a pallet rack. Our customers are often unsure of how the product should ship, how much it will cost, and most importantly, what precautions can be taken to ensure it reaches its destination safely. Because our goal is to help you, we’re just as attentive to freight as you are — if not more so. If our shipping service was shoddy and unpredictable, we wouldn’t stay in business very long. However, there are still some things customers can do on their end to help shore up the process, save money on freight and avoid damage if they’re involved in the shipping. In the outline below, we have some tips on packaging and stacking a pallet to keep in mind.

Tips for damage-free shipping and freight savings

under tension from the straps when securing the load.

• Know the dimensions of your shipment and cube out to max on the height of the trailer. Most carriers base your shipment on the fi rst 12ft, maximize your shipment and keep it under and the savings will be great. Products with an extensive length may be subject to additional fees.

• Choose your carrier carefully. A given carrier may have the lowest rate but, when it comes time for the carrier to deliver they may not be able to fi nd a truck. Be sure to choose a carrier with a proven track record that can reliably and safely deliver your product.

• If racking is not already banded, use steel banding to keep pallet rack and wire decks from being jostled around during transit. Carriers will be moving at speeds upwards of 60 MPH, and loose racking components will bump into each other and the inside of the trailer, often causing damage.

Need additional tips or have questions that still need to be answered?

• Use high quality pallets. Pallet racking is heavy, and can crush poor quality pallets, as can the pressure of tightly-bound steel banding. Shipping on a fl atbed? Get rid of the pallets altogether, as they can crush

Today’s warehouse fire protection systems include more than just pipes and sprinklers. When the products being stored include highly flammable items such as plastics, aerosols, liquors or oils, fire baffles may be required inside the racking structure. Solid steel rack decking and flat sheet accessories from DACS make effective fire or heat baffles in warehouse environments. They can be used on storage racks horizontally or vertically to block the spread of fire, or to capture heat for in-rack sprinkler activation.

New Manual Extendable KOOI-FORKS® Thin profile allows easy entry on 4-way GMA type pallets!

Always there when you need them! Manual Extension Forks provide a simple solution for handling differing load sizes or dual load transport. They replace the original forklift tines so they are always there when you need them.

FINGERTIP LOCKING MECHANISM!

A simple fingertip locking mechanism, which doubles as a grease point, allows the forks to be extended manually and locked into an extended position for safe and secure transport of goods. They’re ideal for applications which have infrequent need for handling differing loads sizes. For more demanding applications, we recommend our original hydraulic telescopic KOOI-REACHFORKS® which allow length adjustment at the touch of a lever.
