Become the Exception Don’t ever count yourself out Mike Marchev
You all know how much I enjoy the Olympics; they are truly special times of year. I was once watching an event that resembled cross-country skiing. And as it is only fair, when you take a group of international, world-class athletes, you put the bumper crop of superior athletes in the front, so the second tier of world-class athletes do not screw things up. I have no problem with stacking the deck by putting the fastest guys up front. That is okay. The gun sounds and like it is often the case when you have a group of world-class athletes trying to accomplish their life-long dream, somebody errs, and then more err until you have one giant err. The guy wearing Bib #4 was one of the favorites and was smack dab in the middle of the err. And to complicate matters, competitors from all over the globe were trying to ski over him, through him, under him and around him. This was not a pretty sight, blue skies or no blue skies. This guy, as they say in New Jersey, was %$#$%^&. The announcers could not believe what they were seeing. This was front page news, and of the not-so-good variety. This guy, after years of training, was pulling snow out of his ears a full three-seconds into

But, (and this is why I love the Olympics) while the world was feeling sorry for this mug, Bib #4, he had other thoughts in mind. (Oh, did I mention that after he grabbed his composure and got back on his feet, he realized that he had broken his ski during the NASCAR-type pile up?) When it rains it pours. When I got back to the couch after cracking another cold one to help wash down my utter disbelief of what I had just witnessed on my non-HDTV large screen Panasonic, I saw #4 go from dead last to second from dead last. He earned my admiration right then and there. But he was not finished yet. This guy had his mojo working, and soon he was third from last. I was not on the edge of my seat yet, but I was taking smaller sips of beer looking over the rim of my beer can. Well, in the interest of time, I think you know the rest. Bib #4 was in the race and he somehow managed to finish second, earning (and I do mean earning) a silver medal after taking gas and starting the day just in front of the Zamboni Machine. (I know, I know, there are no Zamboni Machines up on the mountain.) Olympic-size lesson: Hey! Do not ever count yourself out. Even after getting run over by a handful of macho Olympians wearing tights and funny hats. What ever it is you are doing in life or in business, “it ain’t over till it is over,” some yoga master once said. I think he also moon-lighted as a hall-of-famer and played for the New York Yankees. (Yogi Berra – I knew that. Do I need to explain everything?)
NOW THERE ARE
ORS
the race, not to mention actively dodging the pointed end of the poles from eight other competitors (Two per).
Now, regardless of what it is you are doing for a living, go pretend it is an Olympic event, and start skiing (working) your little backside off. When you fall down, get up. When you are last, move up to second from last. When you break your ski, ski anyway. And do not stop until you hear the National Anthem… yours or someone else’s. Become the Exception - Mike Marchev is a marketing humorist who has the skill to motivate. He shares his personal experiences and lessons in a fun, light and refreshing fashion through his monthly articles. Learn more about Mike at www.mikemarchev.com

Industry News Honeywell to acquire Intelligrated Honeywell employs approximately 130,000 people worldwide, generating revenues of $38.6 billion in 2015. Intelligrated’s supply chain automation solutions are a complement to Honeywell’s extensive workflow performance solutions, including cloud-connected mobile worker applications, high-performance data collection hardware and other technologies to improve worker productivity.
Intelligrated®, a North American-based automated material handling solutions provider, announces it has entered an agreement to be acquired by Honeywell in a transaction valued at $1.5 billion. Intelligrated’s 2016 sales are estimated to be approximately $900 million and brings an attractive portfolio of warehouse automation, order fulfillment and software solutions with an extensive presence in North American e-commerce, retail, food and beverage markets. Intelligrated co-founders Chris Cole and Jim McCarthy will continue to serve in a leadership role. Intelligrated will become part of Sensing and Productivity Solutions (S&PS) in Honeywell’s Automation and Control Solutions business. The match Intelligrated designs, manufactures, installs and supports conveyor, sortation, palletizers, robotics, AS/RS solutions, warehouse execution systems, labor management software and order fulfillment technologies. The company provides comprehensive aftermarket support through its Lifecycle Support Services group, providing maintenance, technology refresh, modifications, system assessments, spare parts and track-driven training programs. Positioned to shape the future of supply chain automation As the cloud, mobility and the Internet of Things redefine how industries work, the acquisition of Intelligrated positions Honeywell S&PS as a leading force to define modern supply chains in the era of omnichannel retail and e-commerce. “The Intelligrated story has always been defined by innovation and doing whatever it takes to give our customers a competitive edge,” says Chris Cole, CEO, Intelligrated. “Joining Honeywell enables us to break new ground with the most advanced levels of systems integration, intelligent software and controls, and data-driven efficiency. Our commitment to innovation and intense focus on customer service and support will continue to deliver unmatched results.” www.intelligrated.com

Business Profile Columbia/Okura celebrates its 20-year anniversary Columbia/Okura is a North American provider of custom engineered robotic palletizing solutions. Headquartered in Vancouver, Washington, Columbia/Okura is a joint venture of material handling companies Columbia Machine, Inc. and Okura USA, Inc. Through years of hard work, management vision and the strategic commitment of the parent companies, Columbia/Okura began to thrive with a focus on bag palletizing during its early years. This experience and exposure provided the confidence to look beyond bag palletizing applications, ultimately allowing the company to become robotic palletizing experts, regardless of packaging type. “Being easy to do business with and taking care of our customer have been key attributes to the company’s success and longevity” said Brian Hutton, President Columbia/Okura. “Columbia/Okura’s customer service has been recognized for excellence with its 24 hour technical support hotline, factory certified field service technicians, state of the art personnel training center, and our ongoing commitment to keeping our customer’s lines running.”
Columbia/Okura has succeeded, in large part, based on the dedication and loyalty of its employees, suppliers and customers, who together, have made this company what it is today. A recognition presentations took place at Vancouver, WA on June 24th, with an employee “thank you” celebration taking place off-site later in the day. www.columbiaokura.com

Creamer's Corner You have options! Mike Creamer
Options, options, actually you have the option not to read this, but you won’t learn about options. Am I making any sense, probably not? Well, sweeper/scrubber options is what I am going to discuss in this article, because I think it is a very important topic. Many hours can be spared with the options that will be discussed. This topic concerns many buyers after the fact of purchasing a sweeper or sweeper/scrubber. Many buyers are not sure or not properly informed about options that may be available on equipment they are purchasing for one reason, or another. There are those options that are so obvious, such as an overhead guard. Of course this option is not as obvious as you may think. To the company that sweeps only outside parking lots and areas such as this, an overhead guard is not needed or required. So, the point here is that every situation is unique in its own right and we are going to talk about these unique situations. One unique situation involves a rider scrubber that scrubs dirty, oily surfaces on a daily basis. The standard squeegee issued with the scrubber is going to be gum rubber. This media will not hold for any length of time, perhaps, any longer than a week at best. In this situation you would want to use the optional urethane squeegee blades. This material holds up to any oily substance or solvents. The cost of these specialty blades is pricey, however, they work! When you squeegee properly, that saves time, therefore, saves money. Breakdown and buy them. You will be glad you did. Another unique situation could involve either sweeper or scrubbers. This option is used where one has open areas and tight areas. Both areas need to be equally clean so I would advise purchasing a vacuum wand option. The operator can be traveling forward, stop and vacuum an area the cleaning machine cannot either reach or get into because it is a small area. One can simply vacuum and then move-on. This also saves from needing another person to do that cleaning and that also saves money. Another option, I like is the “clogged hopper filter option.” This option is self-explanatory and just really a good idea. Some manufacturers warned the operator that the filter is clogged and others shut down the equipment until the filter is cleaned. The latter is more dramatic but both work. The operator and/or maintenance man has to understand that a clean filter is vital to the proper sweeping operation. So if, or when you get into the market of buying a new sweeper, I would recommend this option. In relation to the “clogged hopper filter option” there is another option called “hopper thermo-sensor shutdown” option. What this does is to shutdown the hopper when the thermo-sensor detects heat. Heat ultimately means a fire. A situation as this could be a result of sweeping a live cigarette into the hopper. If you are operating outdoor sweepers, this may be a viable option. Indoor sweepers would not require this option as much since smoking is not allowed in many buildings. Which leads me to a fire extinguisher is always a must on any sweeper or scrubber anywhere.
On sweepers many years ago a high-dump hopper was an option. The low-dump was the norm for many sweepers, which does not make a lot of sense to people. The operator of a low-dump would sweep the company and when they were finished would go outside and pump the debris into their yard. A high-dump sweeper is one that raises its hopper to the height of a dumpster being use to empty the load. The most important option of all, in my opinion, are the brushes. All the manufacturers provide standard poly brushes when you buy a sweeper or scrubber. In this area, there are many types of brushes virtually for any situation or environment. I invite you to e-mail me about your particular problem. Be it in regards to brushes or simply a problem where an option may make your life easier. Thanks, as always, for reading. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber. Safety Corner
Take a minute and think about the above story. Now substitute an industrial facility for the air transport company, a pilot for a forklift operator and a forklift for the plane. No the story is not true, and we would be appalled if it were, since most of us fly. It does bring up a great point. It is truly scary what many companies do in regards to training forklift operators. We have seen too many companies treat the training of forklift operators in this manner, or worse yet, providing no training at all. Forklifts, although heavy pieces of industrial equipment, have been long treated as something anybody can just jump on and drive, which is not the case. Just as obtaining a pilot’s license, learning to run a forklift takes time, dedication and effort and there is just no getting around that unless you are willing to paying a high price in the end. Written by Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems, a leading provider of forklift safety training and materials. Forklift Training Systems can be contacted at 614-583-5749 or at info@forklifttrainingsystem.com. Visit them on the web at www.forklifttrainingsystems.com.

The traditional route of training their pilots had always been very formal, time consuming and costly. The training involved many months of classroom and hands on work to obtain pilots who were capable and qualified to fly in their demanding application. The new training program consisted mainly of a “how to fly” video, observing other pilots fly, a five minute orientation to the flight controls and then a brief takeoff and landing. As long as each trainee completed this sequence, they were given their wings and a permanent spot as a staff pilot at well below industry wages. The airline started to show some impressive profits due to the fact they were turning out pilots faster and cheaper than ever and their competitors were taking notice. Unbelievably, this practice went undiscovered for a long period of time, until finally a serious incident occurred in which a new pilot crashed killing himself, his passengers and taking out several folks on the ground, before their practices came into the light of day.

TIRE PRESSES
Believe it or not?
Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems Recently, I heard an amazing story. A small, private air transport company was found to be training their pilots in some very unconventional ways. This particular airline was in a competition with many others to stay afloat and every dollar was counted carefully. They were also under tremendous pressure to satisfy their hectic schedules. The director of training for the company had been around for many years. Under constant pressure by his managers and the company directors he finally gave in and compromised on his long held safety commitments toward safe training.

TVH Health Nudge Don’t overlook the importance of H2O The temperature is rising and summer is in full swing. As the weather gets hotter, our bodies can overheat. Don’t overlook the importance of H2O, especially during these warmer months when our body may be screaming to be hydrated. Signs or symptoms of dehydration include: constipation, brain fog, fatigue, puffiness, dry lips, dark yellow/ brown urine with low output and increased pain in joints and muscles. Dehydration impacts your mental and physical abilities. We push our body to the limit with inadequate hydration, sleep and poor nutrition then wonder why we are tired or sick and unable to think or perform at optimal levels. The three most common reactions to dehydration are: 1) ignore it; 2) feed it (thinking it is a sign of hunger); or 3) medicate the symptoms. Create a habit of reaching for water as often as you can throughout the day and not waiting for the “signs or symptoms” to occur. In
the book, Your Body’s Many Cries For Water, Dr. F. Batmanghelidj shares twenty years of clinical and scientific research into the role of water in the body, explains a breakthrough discovery that Unintentional Chronic Dehydration (UCD) produces stress, chronic pains and many painful degenerative diseases. People say they don’t like to drink water because they don’t like the taste or they may not drink anything because they don’t want the inconvenience of having to stop what they are doing to go to the restroom. Newsflash: Your body has basic needs and functions that require water. If you don’t drink water, eventually, you will suffer health consequences. Only water is water. It’s important to realize coffee, alcohol and sugary drinks actually contribute to dehydration. Your mind and body may have become accustom and addicted to coffee, soda and juice, but the body requires water. Increase your daily water intake for the health of it! ing. A plant will wither up quickly during the summer days of intense heat and no watering. Amazingly, after a couple days of watering, it can spring back to a healthy plant again. Relate these benefits to your body and brain! Below are three quick and simple water tips to incorporate into your day. 1. Drink 8 oz of water when you first get out of bed. Consider water your kick start for the mind and body. 2. Drink 8 oz of water within an hour of going to bed. Sleep is the time the body can repair and restore itself as well as detoxify. 3. Keep a glass of water or container at your desk and refill throughout the day. Those frequent water breaks to the restroom provide additional health benefits, also addressing the sitting too long dilemma. Industry News Modulift raises profile in Eastern U.S. with landmark distributor appointment Modulift has named I&I Sling Inc. its latest North American distributor, offering the below-the-hook equipment manufacturer comprehensive coverage of eastern regions of the U.S. from facilities in Florida, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia. The agreement aligns Modulift with a lifting equipment powerhouse, boosting outreach of its spreader beams and other equipment through a company that recently celebrated its 50th anniversary in the rigging business. I&I Sling is commonly associated with its world-renowned Slingmax® Rigging Solutions brand. Sarah Spivey, managing director of Modulift, had earmarked I&I Sling as a potential lead distributor some time ago, but only after productive meetings at this April’s Associated Wire Rope Fabricators (AWRF) General Meeting & Product Information Exhibition in New Orleans, did talks reach advanced stages. As part of the agreement, I&I
will stock the full range of Modulift equipment up to MOD 110H from its heavy lift spreader beam series. She said: “Once we got taking about partnering, it was quickly apparent to both parties that this could be a very fruitful relationship. Thomas De Soo [director], Tim Shears [purchasing manager] and I explored the U.S. market and implemented a strategy through which we can supply our range of below-the-hook equipment to the myriad of industries and applications I&I engages with on a weekly basis.” De Soo said: “We are delighted to introduce Modulift’s products to our comprehensive rigging offering. We pride ourselves on providing the crane and heavy lift sectors with a service that is unmatched in the industry. To maintain that reputation, we have to choose our suppliers carefully and work only with those who offer the best product, availability, expertise and customer support. Modulift meets that criteria.” Spivey added: “I&I Sling is known for providing high quality products, while it also boasts a global brand [Slingmax®] that is synonymous with many of the attributes we see in our own company. Furthermore, the company fits with our regional strategy to more efficiently supply product to eastern regions of the U.S. It is a huge market for us and one where we continue to grow. We value our U.S. customers and want to ensure we always have stock available locally for them to ensure they can lift safely and efficiently with our below-the-hook solutions.” www.modulift.com

Orbis introduces the 40 x 48 StakCap™ ORBIS® Corporation introduces the only 40” x 48” top cap and pallet system available in the packaged goods and food processing industries. The new StakCap™ will secure 40” x 48” pallet loads for easier and more efficient material handling while enhancing the safety and maneuverability of double stacked pallets. Without a top cap, container loads are more likely to shift when moved, which causes an unequal balance in weight. This makes it difficult and inefficient to transport materials due to the increased chance of collapsed loads. The 40” x 48” StakCap covers pallet loads so they maintain uniform weight distribution when stored or transported.

Push-pull attachment saves time, offers versatility with pallets This patented innovation combines the cost saving benefits of ROLLERFORKS® with proven push-pull technology creating a revolutionary pallet-less handling solution. The RollerForks are used to retrieve single stacked pallet-less goods straight from the floor for deposit onto pallets or trailers. When slipsheeted loads must be removed from pallets or when double-stacked slipsheeted loads must be separated, the hydraulic “pull function” is used to pull the load onto the RollerForks. The sheet gripper can then be released allowing the load to be placed onto a pallet or the floor. The forklift simply backs away and the RollerForks glide out from under the goods.

Industry News The power of "old school" service: Four reasons your business should bring it back Companies are more tech-savvy than ever, but customers still crave old-fashioned service (albeit with a modern spin). Customer experience thought leader Joseph Michelli says that if you want your organization to thrive, you'd better go retro in your service delivery. As the tech industry has exploded over the past couple of decades and millennials have risen to power, companies have innovated wildly to keep up with relentless customer expectations. Better, faster, easier! is the battle cry. Oh, and make sure there's an app for that! It's no surprise that sleek, streamlined, lightning-paced organizations abound these days. Yes it is what customers wanted—but isn't there something cold and impersonal about many 21st century transactions? You're not imagining it, says Joseph Michelli. Yes, customers still demand the speed and efficiency. But what they really crave is that feeling of an old school company that takes the time to really know them, engage them, nurture them. "No matter how high tech your service becomes, you're still serving human beings," says Michelli, best-selling author of Driven to Delight: Delivering World-Class Customer Experience the Mercedes-Benz Way (McGraw-Hill; December 2015; ISBN: 978-0-
07-180630-5; $27.00). "Humans don't want to feel like a URL or a Twitter handle or even a consumer. We want to feel like we matter. We'll always choose companies that give us that feeling." Michelli—who worked with Mercedes-Benz USA to positively and radically transform its customer experience and who has written books on service giants like Zappos and Starbucks—knows how crucial it is to know your customers and show them how much you care. "It may seem counterintuitive to ask a 2016 dot-com to bring back mom & pop, Main Street values," he says. "But really, it's not a conflict. You can provide customized, on-the-spot service and still make people feel like they just had an authentic, deeply personal experience." HOW you create this experience will vary depending on who you are, what you're selling, what your current roadblocks may be. (HINT: You might have culture problems that shape your practices, processes, and priorities in ways that sabotage service.) Yet as you seek to go more "retro" in your service delivery, Michelli suggests you start by knowing the WHYs:
• Do you have equipment to sell? • Are you looking for more dealers? • Is your website outdated or hard to navigate? • Do you need help with publicity or copy-writing? • Do you think direct mail is too costly? • Is your client list shrinking? • Does Social Media confuse you?

The Material Handling Industry knows,NETWORK WORKS
Customers crave a connection to simpler times. Life is so frantic and complicated, due in large part to technology. And people don't want to get rid of technology, because it lets us attain goods and services quickly and efficiently. But when we need to get on the phone with a person, or when we're face to face, we want to know we're talking to a human being who has our interests at heart—not a machine. We long for the days when the shopkeeper would open the store after hours for a customer in need. "Customers want the organizations that service them to be part Silicon Valley, part Main Street," says Michelli. "There's this tension between our age of incredible technology and the retro, connected, heartwarming, Norman Rockwell-y type of customer service people really want, and I think too many companies have gone too far in the space-age direction. "A culture of compassion and empathy still has to come through in your person-to-person interactions," he adds. "There really is something about sharing a smile—sharing a moment together—that becomes increasingly important in the cluttered world. We want people to pause and take a moment with us." Customers find comfort in "the familiar." No one likes to spend their valuable time

Industry News dumping less than stellar companies only to start all over again in the search for better ones. People enjoy predictable companies they're used to and comfortable with—as long as those companies deliver great service. An effort to remind valuable patrons that they are valued goes a long way in ensuring that you retain your customer base.
old-fashioned service."
"I still go to my doctor in Colorado for second opinions—and I live in Florida!" muses Michelli. "I don't have to tell him a huge backstory, because he's known me for years. And the fact that he does great work to serve me, as the customer...that's a big part of it too."
"There's NEVER going to be a time when people say, I don't really care if you hurt me. I don't really care if you appreciate me. I don't really care if I belong. You know, as far as I'm concerned, I just want to buy your stuff," concludes Michelli. "And I think because of that, we have to anchor ourselves to the timeless truth of humanity, even as we customize the delivery in line with the cultural trends.
He suggests you find ways to remind your customer how far back you go and that you strive to foster a lasting relationship. Whether that means logging notes about their particular needs in your database so you can follow up or offering "anniversary" discounts honoring their patronage, you can earn their loyalty and keep them coming back by treating them like they genuinely matter. Old school service fits with the burgeoning artisanal movement happening now. For many years there's been a lot of mass-produced junk out there. Customers everywhere are conditioned to expect less thanks to millions of disappointing products coming from across the globe. No wonder we're in the middle of a full-fledged consumer backlash. More and more, shoppers are choosing products and services that are unique, customized labors of love.
Here's the bottom line: Even though the times have changed and technology has leapt into the foreground, basic human needs have stayed the same.
"The successful organizations are the ones that really get that," he adds. "They figure out how to integrate technology but still truly connect to the customer face to face or on the phone. They instill it in their training. Team members learn to make sure customers know that they matter—that they are always heard and appreciated." About the Author: Joseph A. Michelli, PhD, CSP, is an internationally sought-after speaker, organizational consultant, and New York Times number-one best-selling author. He is a globally recognized thought leader in customer experience design.
"Look at the craft beer craze that's everywhere today," comments Michelli. "For generations in the U.S., people drank pilsner—they were conditioned to do that. But now, more and more people are falling in love with the amazing craft beers available, because microbrewers have reclaimed the art of beer making. "Businesses will delight customers when they pride themselves on their craftsmanship and skill level," he adds. "There's something uplifting about watching well-crafted skills and just appreciating that ability. There is an artisanship of service at the Ritz-Carlton. Watching those professionals in action just makes you go, Wow, that's a lost art!" Your service style helps you stand out from the pack. Obviously this is the most compelling reason to adopt an old school approach to service. It will draw customers to you and maybe even keep you alive. There's so much competition out there today that the way you treat and relate to customers may be the only thing that makes you you. "You can bring things to market very quickly today," says Michelli. "Speed and global distribution sometimes make for product ubiquity, so it is all the more critical that you differentiate yourself by putting your customers first and really owning a certain style of

Industry News For intermittent lift truck use, sometimes the right choice is to buy new Andrew Omahen UTILEV Business Development Manager
For operations where a forklift is necessary, but used only intermittently, one of the biggest considerations has historically been the initial acquisition. The choice was limited to the reliability of new equipment with a hefty price tag or the affordability of used equipment with inherent dependability risks. In between, there may be various long-term and short-term rental options. Over the last few years, the emergence of reliable, low-cost forklifts has opened up new possibilities for applications across many industries to acquire affordable, no-nonsense equipment without advanced functionality or attachments. This “utility” truck segment helps operations meet operational goals while avoiding problems associated with used equipment or the prescriptive requirements of rental contracts.
equipment without lots of “bells and whistles” a viable alternative to either buying used or renting. Although perceptions of quality and historic buying preferences are still obstacles for the utility market, those mindsets are changing.
Matching the correct application to the lift truck It’s important to understand the utility truck segment within the broader spectrum of the lift truck market. Lift trucks generally fall into three categories in terms of durability: premium, mid-range and utility.
Warranty A new utility truck typically comes with a standard manufacturer’s warranty, whereas a used truck may come with a shorter, limited warranty…or no warranty at all.
Any lift truck purchase begins with understanding the customer’s operation and ensuring the right truck for the right application. This generally comes down to a few key factors like: • Duty cycles – how many hours do the units operate(per shift/ day/week/month/year) • Conditions – what are the environmental conditions within the operation (clean, dirty, dusty, temperature of the operating environment) • Loads – what are units lifting and to what heights A combination of these operational factors helps identify, at a very high-level, the most appropriate type of lift truck for that application. • Premium trucks are intended for the most rigorous applications. Often operating multiple shifts, seven days a week, lifting heavy loads in rugged environments or requiring attachments to ac commodate specialized loads. These units have been designed, tested and proven to perform in these demanding applications and are priced accordingly. (over 2,500 hours per year) • Mid-range trucks are the largest segment of the lift truck market and cover almost every industry. These units are designed for continuous operations, and can be highly-customized to meet specific customer needs. (Approximately 2,500 hours or less per year) • Utility lift trucks are designed for moderate use in lower-capacity applications. They are typically part of a single-truck or small fleet and may operate seasonally or as little as a couple of hours a day. (Approximately 400 – 1,500 hours per year) The case for buying new The utility market used to be relatively small with a few key players. Today it is a more robust competitive landscape, offering small operations looking for functional, straightforward materials handling
When compared equally to rental terms or the problems associated with buying a used model, purchasing a new utility lift truck for the right application can be a great value. The cost of a new utility lift truck averages between $18,000 and $24,000. A low-hour used truck may cost $15,000 to $20,000. A few thousand dollars difference in the initial purchase price quickly evaporates when looking at total cost of ownership over the economic life of the equipment.
Actual Hours The life of a lift truck is rated in hours (not calendar years). When buying new you’re getting the unit at the beginning of its economic life. Rental equipment may already have 5,000, 8,000, or more than 10,000 hours with little indication of how the hours were accumulated. When buying used, depending on the application you could only be getting around 60 percent or less of the unit’s remaining useful economic life. Service and Service Support For most used trucks, maintenance history is a mystery. Any major repairs or catastrophic system failures are rarely shared as part of the purchase agreement. Even with well-maintained units, maintenance costs rise exponentially after they are seven years old. This is one of the primary reasons most forklift equipment leases do not extend beyond six years. Also, depending on the age of the equipment, parts availability may be an issue leading to prolonged downtime or a complete shutdown of operations. In addition to standard warranties, new trucks will likely have readily-available parts and knowledgeable service teams to ensure proper maintenance. Having a reliable parts distribution network and the support infrastructure in place is critically important for all lift trucks. This usually isn’t a problem if you’re buying either a new utility or used truck that have established brands supporting them, as those companies have the service network in place to provide parts and support. The dollars and cents of renting While the cost to rent a lift truck is cheaper in the short term, over the long term it can quickly become more expensive than purchasing a new utility truck. Monthly rental fees start at about $1,100. A six-month rental

Industry News would cost $6,600 plus delivery/pick-up fees and possible charges for overage or damage. After three years that same money could have been invested in purchasing a new truck, providing not only collateral, but a lift truck for use throughout the year whenever it was needed, rather than depending on rental unit availability. For seasonal companies like nurseries or agricultural-product companies who only need equipment for part of the year, it might make more financial sense to purchase a new utility truck as it may pay for itself in short order. Conclusion For applications that need a lift truck, but don’t have constant use requirements, a new utility unit may be the most cost-effective alternative. Initial lower acquisition costs for used or rental units can be quickly offset by increased maintenance expenses, unreliable service support or unpredictable rental availability. The cost difference of a new utility lift truck may be nominal when compared to the value of acquiring a unit at the beginning of its useful economic life without the possibility of hidden maintenance issues or abuse history, the advantage of standard warranty coverage (if available), readily available parts and service support all helping to increase uptime and improve productivity. When stacked up against renting or buying a used truck, it provides a compelling case to buy new. Andrew Omahen is the Business Development Manager for UTILEV. Joining Hyster-Yale Group, Inc. Material Handling Network

Network - how to What to ask when quoting replacement upright frames How many times have you been asked to quote replacement frames by a customer? We encounter it all the time ourselves, and it’s not always obvious what they actually need. Are they looking for a whole bay, or just a single upright? Do they need a standard teardrop frame to fit their existing racking, or do they require a specific brand? Of course, it’s critical to make sure the upright you’re providing will meet their needs in terms of both functionality and appearance. Providing a frame made by the wrong manufacturer could result in decreased capacity or overall performance in certain scenarios, and not matching the current color scheme can rub certain customers the wrong way. At WPRP, we’re proponents of checklists and other failsafes that allow us to cover all of our bases without the need to jog our memories or ask around each time. As always, we want to pass this information along to you, so we’ve put together a basic checklist that can help you determine the right fit and product when quoting replacement upright frames. Quoting replacement uprights When you’re quoting replacement uprights, you’ll want to ask each of the questions below. Don’t skip any of them, as they’re all going to provide pieces of information you’ll consider when choosing what kind of frame to offer in a given situation.
Checklist: 1. Ask for the load information When we say load information, we’re referring to the dimensions and properties of the product or other items that will be stored on the racking. We want to find the answers to important questions about the racking’s load: How much will it weigh? What is the length, width and height of the load for a given pallet position? Neglecting the consideration of this information can result in a failure of the racking to serve its main purpose: storing heavy product above the ground. 2. Beam spacing and beam level elevations Beam spacing and elevation is an essential part of pallet rack performance, particularly in applications with heavy loads. As a rule of thumb, the frame capacity (the overall amount of weight a frame can support in a pallet rack bay) will go up as the beam spacing (the vertical space between two beam levels) goes down. This can be demonstrated by flexing an uncooked spaghetti noodle and observing the deflection, then breaking the noodle into a one inch piece and replicating the action with the smaller piece. Applications with heavy loads and large beam spacing will often require sturdier upright frames than lighter duty storage applications with standard or smaller beam spacing. 3. Weight supported per beam level We touched on weight briefly in the first point, but weight-per-beamlevel deserves its own bullet point. The weight supported by each beam level is important to know, as it factors into the overall weight supported by the upright frames. It’s not necessarily as easy as doubling the weight

SUPERIOR ROLL HANDLER This modification allows the customer to handle large diameter reels or rolls without the fear of the unit rolling or damaging the product.
Modifications made to the truck include widening the forks to accept the roll or reel, adding the angles to the fork to cradle the load perfectly and reinforcing the linkage, battery compartment and the overall construction of the pallet truck.

Network - how to per pallet position from the item on the list, because there’s no guarantee that the weight carried on a beam level will be evenly distributed. It’s also critical to ask whether or not the load will actually be sitting on both beams. If it is not, it may require both heavier beams and heavier wire decks, depending upon the weight of the load. 4. Depth and height of existing uprights Of course, you’ll want to know the dimensions of the existing frames so that you can match them if possible. Even if you’re unable to match brands precisely, matching dimensions can go a long way towards meeting the end user’s needs if they’re simply looking for functionality. The depth of the upright frame must match that of the existing frames, and the upright column dimensions will dictate the column’s, and therefore the frame’s overall capacity. 5. Pictures of the existing pallet racking Sometimes pictures can answer questions that would take dozens of emails or phone calls to figure out. Kickstart your replacement upright project by obtaining pictures that can be used to identify useful information about the product, such as brand, size, color, punch style, etc.
