Become the Exception Let’s keep things simple Mike Marchev
I do not see what all the fuss is about. Who said that building a business had to be difficult? Certainly not me. Like everything worth pursuing, it is the fundamentals that will get you to where you are trying to go. In an attempt to simplify your journey, I’ve outlined five steps that will have you feeling like a pro in very short order. The work stems from the concept of consistency, and not from tedious and laborious work. Let’s break this down to its component parts. First, identify a market consisting of people who want what you have/do. This may be a hard pill to swallow, but current cruisers are more attractive than the larger group who has never donned an orange jacket in a mandatory lifeboat drill. Next, introduce yourself to this identified market. No buckshot approach here. You know exactly who you need to know. You have targeted them and positioned them on your “dartboard.” Third, qualify this group to make certain that what you have is what will “scratch their itch.” There is no future in trying to

The Red-Zone Danger Area Warning Lights put a bright red line on the floor to keep pedestrians a safe distance away from mobile equipment. They are commonly used on the sides, but can also be installed on the rear or even on all four sides to create a complete NO GO AREA. The Red Zone is distributed in the U.S. and Canada by Forklift Training Systems. Introduce your customers to this product before your competition does, order your demo units today!

force a square peg into a round hole. Next, make yourself visible and available. Make it easy for them to contact you. It is your job to remain visible. And when they do contact you, pretend that you are actually pleased that they called. You should not have to pretend. This should not be an exercise in make-believe. In time, you will be given an opportunity to strut your stuff… to showcase your wares… to earn your stripes… to cash their checks. That’s it. That is all you need to do, every day, with consistency, with personality, and with a sense of professionalism. That’s easy enough, isn’t it? So why are not more people successful at sales? That is an easy question to answer. Because most people fail to buy-in to this formula. They feel that if they build a better mousetrap, the market will find its way to their door. This is outdated thinking. This is mindless thinking. “How so, Mike?” you ask. The entry-demands for selling travel are simple. You don’t have to buy anything. All you need to do is to learn to say, “me too” and go print yourself a business card with some fancy travel-related logo, and a clever saying next to a pretty picture of a palm tree and your email address. The options all consumers have today are limitless. At last count, there were 25 bazillion ways to book a trip to Europe or a room with an ocean-view in Cancun. The fastest way to failure is to do what everybody else does when it comes to selling travel. The fastest way to success is to adopt the formula I outlined above. Here is an idea. Before crossing my formula off as another piece of marketing mumbo-jumbo, give it a shot. Adapt this formula to fit your own personality, and see for yourself if it is a waste of time. Become the Exception - Mike Marchev is a marketing humorist who has the skill to motivate. He shares his personal experiences and lessons in a fun, light and refreshing fashion through his monthly articles. Learn more about Mike at www.mikemarchev.com

Industry News Raymond celebrates continued innovation with anniversary The Raymond Corporation is celebrating the company’s continued innovation by commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Raymond Reach-Fork® truck. On Aug. 14, 1951, George Raymond Sr., Raymond’s founder, and Christian Gibson, an engineer at the company, received a U.S. patent for the power-driven narrow aisle material handling truck — better known today as the Raymond® Reach-Fork truck. The Raymond team sees industry needs and works quickly to address them, often being the first in the industry to develop innovations that change warehousing. In the 1940s, a grocery consultant brought a problem to Raymond’s attention. The consultant recognized that wide aisle warehousing was costing American companies millions of dollars, and George Raymond Sr. had the vision to develop the narrow aisle concept. This warehousing idea led to the design of Raymond’s narrow aisle vehicle that maneuvered in aisles less than 7 feet wide and retrieved and put away pallets two tiers high. The vehicle preserves its gravitational integrity by straddling a pallet with baselegs. “Many of the basic principles of Raymond’s first power-driven narrow aisle material handling truck are used in the narrow aisle reach trucks of today,” said Susan Comfort, product manager for narrow aisle products at The Raymond Corporation. “As warehouse and distribution centers find ways to gain productivity and efficiency, our forward-thinking products and solutions evolve and advance to keep up with our customers’ demands. Today, the Raymond Reach-Fork truck series has over 200 configurations and can be customized for a variety of applications, including retail, grocery, manufacturing and distribution.” Raymond’s history and philosophy lives on as it continues to innovate, addressing customers’ ultra-narrow aisle needs with its TRT transtacker turret truck, which can maneuver in aisles as narrow as 5 feet wide, and retrieve and put away pallets up to 60 feet high. In today’s world of interconnectivity, Raymond lift trucks are the first to have an integrated operator display and are equipped with iWAREHOUSE® — a wireless fleet management and warehouse optimization system that assists companies in managing their fleet, labor and entire operations, and in effect, lowering their overall operating costs. Raymond also uses technologies such as regenerative lowering, which allows trucks to run longer.
“The high-density warehouses that we know today are only possible because 65 years ago, our founder revolutionized warehouse operations through creating the narrow aisle concept and Reach-Fork truck — and we continue to lead the way in innovation, proven by our recent recognition of 19 engineers who have contributed to 32 patents awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office since 2012,” said Michael Field, chief executive officer of Raymond. “Our continuous improvement leads to revolutionary developments in products and solutions that exemplify Raymond’s core principle of innovation, from the flexible automation of the Courier automated lift truck, to our internet of things solutions that bring entire operations to the mobile device of the warehouse manager.” www.raymondcorp.com

Safety Corner Don’t spare the rod! Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems A famous verse from the bible says “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.” Proverbs 13:24. You might ask, “What in the world does that have to do with forklift safety” and my response would be “everything.” There are many factors in safe operation and each plays a vital part. When I first started to train, I thought if a company saw one of their forklift operators violating forklift safety policies they should stop them and discuss why they should work safely. The conversation I expected might have gone like this. “Hey John, I noticed you are not wearing your seatbelt, we would really like to see you wear it to protect yourself and your family, it is very important, have a good day.” While there is nothing wrong with that approach, the years have hardened me a bit, as have working with people and families torn apart by forklift accidents. These may sound callous, but here are some facts for dealing with forklift safety:
• We are dealing with adults, not children. When you tell a child something they may not understand the consequences of non-compliance or they may just choose not to follow them. Adults do understand what they are told and if training is done correctly they will fully understand the potential consequences of non-compliance. Lastly, not following the rules is NOT AN OPTION for employees. If they expect to collect their paycheck, they should expect to “toe the line” from a safety standpoint. If they don’t want to follow the rules, then they should start their own company with their own rules or find a company that has no rules. • There is no need to dance around the issue of confronting people for violating safety policies. As supervisors and trainers that IS OUR JOB. Like it or not, confronting safety violations and fixing problems is part of the job, maybe not a pleasant part, but one of the most important parts. When parents don’t address problems, or half-heartedly do so with their kids, we know what can happen.
• Do you have equipment to sell? • Are you looking for more dealers? • Is your website outdated or hard to navigate? • Do you need help with publicity or copy-writing? • Do you think direct mail is too costly? • Is your client list shrinking? • Does Social Media confuse you?
then pickup the phone and call Andra or Tim at Material Handling Network. They can advise you on the best advertising and marketing plans to help grow your business. www.mhnetwork.com • Ph: 309.699.4431 / 563.588.3856 • mhnetwork@wcinet.com The Material Handling Industr y knows,NETWORK WORKS

They can end up on drugs, in trouble with the law and with no respect for authority. When companies do the same we know what happens, non-compliance, accidents, injuries, unsafe situations and no accountability. • Although we should not be disrespectful or rude when dealing with anyone, we need to cut to the chase and be sure people are getting our message. At the beginning of this article, I talked about how I used to think a conversation should go, now let me define how I would do it today on a first offense. “Hey John, I see you are not wearing your seatbelt. You know we covered this in training and that it is a rule at our company to wear it. I need to have you put it on now and we expect you to wear it each and every time you are operating the forklift. It is the number one killer of operators and we don’t want something to happen to you or to your family. I will write you up a warning this time and put it in your file, but if it happens again it will involve time off from work. Are we clear on what needs to happen from here on out?” One company we work with repeatedly and nicely warned operators for a set period of time on seatbelt use. They had experienced a fatal accident at a sister plant during a forklift tip over and made seatbelt use and a few other items cardinal safety rules which result in immediate termination of employment for offenders. A few days after the warning period ended, a 20-year veteran was caught testing the policy and was let go. This company runs 24/7 operations with large numbers of forklifts and I have not seen seatbelt non-compliance again in many years, no matter how hard the lesson was, the message got across and their facility was much safer as a result. In summary, put some teeth and muscle behind your enforcement of forklift safety issues. When people understand the company is dead serious about something, they usually comply fairly quickly. If they perceive any hesitation or half-heartedness, then they will test you to the end of your patience. Set the rules and then enforce them with a vengeance. You are protecting workers and their families by doing so. Written by Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems, a leading provider of forklift safety training and materials. TVH Health Nudge What you don’t know can impact your quality of life Lucy DelSarto, Heath & wellness coach for TVH
When your oil change light or any other light on your dashboard goes on, you call to schedule an appointment with your local mechanic. However, you’ve been ignoring that pain in your back for months. Many of us take better care of our vehicles with scheduling regular maintenance than we do our bodies. While we’ll have many vehicles in our lifetime, we only have one body. A health risk assessment (HRA) is a self-reported health questionnaire, used to provide individuals with an evaluation of their health risks and quality of life. A HRA identifies health behaviors and risk factors such as smoking, physical activity and nutritional habits. The feedback from the assessment can help reduce these risk factors as well as related diseases. The numbers you should be familiar with and keep a record of include: blood glucose (sugar in your blood), blood pressure, total cholesterol or HDL (also called the good cholesterol) and LDL cholesterol (often referred to as the bad cholesterol).
Use HRA results to create a dialog with your healthcare provider to make health decisions by prioritizing risks and setting goals. Daily choices and attitude are ultimately up to you and will greatly impact your quality of life. Regular physical exams ensure you are receiving the care and attention you need to prevent and/or treat illnesses. Your body doesn’t come with a warranty. Take the time to schedule annual appointments, for the health of it. At TVH our Nudge Program is designed to encourage and support the healthy lifestyle. In addition, our on-site Health Clinic provides annual Health Risk Assessments for all employees. Knowledge is empowering; however, action is required. As John F. Kennedy stated, “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” The same is true of your health; you don’t have to be sick to get better. If you would like to know more about TVH and the Nudge Health and Wellness program, contact Lucy DelSarto, health & wellness coach for TVH Americas, at editorial@mhnetwork.com.

Smart forklift trucks thanks to smart sensor technology
New 20 ton industrial trailers preengineered for quick turnaround
New smart sensors from SIKO help smart forklifts to exactly measure the angle, height, tilt and speed, whilst at the same time meeting safety requirements. Whether in forklifts, reach stackers or Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV), it is not possible to imagine the industrial truck sector today without the use of intelligent sensors. The absolute measurement of position, angle, tilt, speed and lifting height is becoming more and more an integral part of intelligent industrial trucks. Sensors are essential in driverless transport systems. In autonomous driving systems, these have always been used for the most important control functions. But for more and more vehicles that do require a driver, sensors are also being used to support them. www.siko-global.com

Dorner introduces next generation modular belt conveyors
Hannibal Industries is proud to be part of QVC’s giant expansion in Ontario, California which will handle up to 20 percent of the company’s distribution, covering the entire western region of the United States. This warehouse will employ up to 1,000 people and is a leading-edge facility built with the industry’s leading racking system by Hannibal Industries. Since its initial release in 2012, TubeRack has successfully been installed globally, endured its firstever impact test, formed strategic partnerships to develop a new racking product and has expanded into new industries. TubeRack’s modular design is engineered to be more impact resistant, to reduce product shedding in the case of an impact or seismic event, offers better tolerances, and more efficient shipping. www.hannibalrack.com
Dorner’s newly redesigned 2200 series modular belt conveyor features additional belt options, a sleek open frame design, a universal T-slot and is ideal for applications within the metalworking, packaging, assembling and general manufacturing industries. The product redesign includes a number of improvements. For starters, its ladder-style, open frame design replaces traditional perforated bedplates that allows better airflow through the frame for cooling and water, and chemical drainage applications. Its sleek, narrow profile means it can be positioned under machinery and in other tight spaces where other conveyors wouldn’t fit. www.dornerconveyor.com

Industry News Raymond Handling holds Pink Pallet Jack online auction Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation (RHCC), a materials handling equipment supplier in Northern California and the Northwest, will be holding its third annual “Pink Pallet Jack Project” online auction in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month from October 17 to 27 on eBay. All proceeds raised from the auction will be donated to the Tina Fund in Greene, New York and the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation in Fremont, California. The eleven-day auction will begin on Monday, October 17 at 6 a.m. PT on eBay, where participants can bid on Raymond’s pink 8210 Electric Pallet Truck. This particular model is ideal for retail store, wholesale delivery and food processing applications that require navigation in tight and/or congested areas. It also features Raymond’s exclusive Click2Creep design, which overrides the upper brake position and automatically slows the travel speed, enabling improved maneuverability and more controlled operation. “Charitable giving is at the core of Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation, as we are devoted to making positive impacts on our local communities,” comments Steve Raymond, President. “Due to overwhelming support by our employees, customers, partners and our local communities, Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation has raised more than $109,000 for charity since 2014, a large por-
tion of this amount coming from the Pink Pallet Jack Project.” Just last month, RHCC began its fundraising efforts early with its first “Beat Breast Cancer” rummage sale held at its offices in Auburn, Washington, where additional funds were raised for the Tina Fund and HERS Breast Cancer Foundation. The Pink Pallet Jack Project was initiated in 2014 by Steve Raymond and Simon Walker when the duo were invited by local Greene, New York resident Shelly Howell to participate in a charity event benefiting the Tina Fund, a fund that Howell created in honor of her sister Tina Turner, who lost her courageous battle with breast cancer in 2011. Open House In addition to the auction, the company is opening its Fremont, California facility located at 41400 Boyce Road to the public for an open house on October 20, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be live music and a raffle for various prizes including a manual pallet jack. The company’s partners, customers and neighbors are invited to attend, meet Steve Raymond and see the pink pallet jack. www.raymondcorp.com

Network - how to WPRP's guide to industrial shelving Industrial shelving: What do I need? Ever go online to search for the product you think you need, only to find a confusing mess of information and an overwhelming number of products? For many people, shelving reliably falls into this category. Even to the material handling industry veteran, let alone someone unfamiliar with the product, it seems like there’s no end to the number of industrial shelving makes and models that are available on the market. To make things even more confusing, different storage requirements often call for completely different types of shelving. One application, for example, might be perfectly suited to bulk rack, while another is light enough to be supported by lighter duty rivet shelving. How’s one supposed to know what the differences are or which kind they need? Despite the frustration that can come with matching the appropriate storage unit to your needs, taking the time to do so will ensure an efficient operation that can scale with
your future needs and give you the positive ROI you’re looking for. With that in mind, we’re going to go through the basics of industrial shelving to outline the general differences between the major types of shelving available, what their purposes are and whether they’re right for you. Below are three different types of storage units for you to consider on your next application. Rivet shelving What it is: Rivet Shelving is a highly versatile style of steel shelving that consists of upright posts, horizontal bars on which the shelving level sits, and often times additional perpendicular shelf supports. Rivet shelving is typically outfitted with some type of particleboard that provides the flat shelf surface. Alternatively, heavy duty applications or those needing to comply with fire codes may have a wire deck fit atop the shelf supports. Examples of rivet shelving weight capacity include that of Tennsco rivet shelving units, which support 500 – 800 lbs per shelf, as well Tennsco’s heavy duty shelves, which offer a capacity from 1250 – 2250 lbs per shelf. How it’s used: Rivet shelving is effective at providing storage solutions for a wide range of applications, from basic back-room storage to totally-integrated warehouse storage systems. Posts and

How it’s used: Bulk rack is perfect for storing product that’s too heavy for rivet shelving, but a little too light to require high-capacity pallet racking. Aside from size and capacity, one of the features that sets bulk rack aside from pallet racking is that it’s more commonly used for hand-stack applications than those which need to be loaded by a lift truck. Still, total weight supported per bay (a.k.a. section or unit) in bulk rack applications is often well in excess of 1,000 pounds.

Industrial pallet rack What it is: Industrial pallet racking is the largest and strongest variety of industrial shelving. Upright frames commonly range from 8 to 24 feet in height, and beams are often available in lengths ranging from 4 to 12 feet, though custom sizes of both components can be made. Pallet rack bay capacities can range from approximately 15,000# to 40,000# at 48″ vertical beam spacing, depending on the manufacturer.

shelves come in varying sizes to provide versatility and adjustability based on changing needs. As its name suggests, rivet shelving features boltless connection for its components. In other words, you won’t have to sift through 50 pieces of hardware and take 3 hours to put rivet shelving together. Rivet shelving is generally the lightest duty industrial rack available to consumers, and is poorly suited to heavier, high-intensity industrial storage scenarios. Bulk rack What it is: Bulk Rack is an ideal industrial storage solution for heavy duty storage applications. Components of bulk rack consist of welded frames, beams and deck supports. Assembly is quick and easy, with beams securely dropping into upright holes and deck supports dropping into beam slots, creating a rigid framework. An example of bulk rack capacity is Tennsco‘s bulk rack unit capacity of 17,000# based on 24″ vertical beam spacing. This particular unit is available in heights of up to 16 ft.

How it’s used: Pallet rack is specifically designed to support high vertical stacking of single items or palletized loads, typically in a warehouse setting. Pallet rack systems allow palletized loads to be stored in horizontal rows, and with multiple levels of rows. Because pallet racking is strong, highly adjustable and versatile, it’s found in virtually any industry that utilizes high volume warehouse storage. Loads being stored on pallet racks are usually loaded and picked using a forklift, as opposed to being hand-stacked. Installation will require the racking to be plumb, and the footplates to be anchored to the ground. Now that you have a brief overview of the types of storage systems available, you’ll have a better idea of what the right shelving system is for a given application. If you need help, don’t hesitate to contact us for your next storage system. Give us a call at 888-5781579 or email sales@wprpwholesalepalletrack.com and we’ll be happy to help! Industry News Ritchie Bros. to acquire IronPlanet Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers Incorporated and IronPlanet®, an online marketplace for used heavy equipment and other durable asset sales, jointly announced that they have entered into an agreement under which Ritchie Bros. will acquire IronPlanet for approximately US$758.5 million, subject to customary closing adjustments. Founded in 1999, IronPlanet complements Ritchie Bros.’ primarily end-user customer base, as it focuses largely on the needs of corporate accounts, equipment manufacturers, dealers and government entities in equipment disposition solutions. It conducts its sales primarily through online-only platforms, with weekly online auctions and in other equipment marketplaces. IronPlanet, a private company based in the United States, sold approximately US$787 million of Gross Merchandise Value (GMV)[1] through their sales channels during 2015, and has achieved a 25.2% compounded growth rate in assets sold from 2013 through 2015. This growth momentum has continued, with a 41% increase in GMV during the first half of 2016 relative to the same period in 2015. “This transformative transaction is the logical next step for Ritchie Bros., building on our multi-channel platform, global

Ritchie Bros. and IronPlanet both have talented teams and winning cultures built on a passion for serving customers.” “This is an exciting day for IronPlanet, our customers, employees and shareholders. Customers will benefit from a larger marketplace with more buyers and sellers, as well as a greater number of choices and services. As an example of the value the combined company’s multi-channel transactional platforms and greater scale can deliver, Ritchie Bros. also announced today that it has entered into a historic, long-term strategic alliance with Caterpillar, which will significantly strengthen its relationship with Caterpillar dealers. Ritchie Bros. will become Caterpillar’s preferred global partner for live onsite and online auctions under the agreement, which will take effect upon completion of the IronPlanet acquisition. The addition of IronPlanet provides Ritchie Bros. with access to new, large customer segments, including government surplus and oil & gas. Furthermore, the wider range of sales solutions offered by the combined company will allow it to more effectively meet customer preferences in many key international locations, including the U.K., Germany, Japan and China – where Ritchie Bros.’ established infrastructure will provide a platform to launch IronPlanet solutions. Strengthens digital capabilities to provide enhanced levels of customer service. The combined entity will have an integrated technology platform to provide customers with more tailored solutions that meet their needs and enhance the overall customer experience. These solutions, including multiple dealer portal options, valuable business intelligence, amplified data analytics and multiple online sales channels, position the combined company to provide comprehensive asset management solutions. Together, Ritchie Bros. and IronPlanet are better positioned to cater to evolving consumer preferences, with more transactions being conducted online. Collectively, Ritchie Bros. and IronPlanet (on a pro forma basis) sold more than US$3.0 billion of assets through online transactions during the 12
months trailing June 30, 2016 – ranking the combined business among the world’s top 50 B2B e-commerce companies, based on value sold[2]. Expected to deliver long-term growth and profitability. The transaction is expected to be accretive to earnings within the first year (excluding transaction costs) and significantly bolster growth in Gross Auction Proceeds (GAP), revenue and earnings over the long term. The combination will also enhance the generation of free cash flow, which will enable Ritchie Bros. to support strategic growth priorities, return value to shareholders and reduce debt. Presents tremendous opportunities to build on Ritchie Bros.’ business model and strong heritage. Ritchie Bros. and IronPlanet share a passion for serving customers and providing them with easy-to-use solutions. Bringing together Ritchie Bros.’ scale, geographic footprint and brand strength with IronPlanet’s complementary online models will offer customers more options to move more of their inventory across multiple sales channels. Transparency and a customer focus will continue to be the cornerstones of the combined company, as it leverages best practices from both organizations, including IronPlanet’s successful inspection and IronClad Assurance® equipment condition certification. Transaction terms. Under the terms of the transaction, Ritchie Bros. will acquire 100% of the equity of IronPlanet for approximately US$740 million in cash and the assumption of unvested equity interests in IronPlanet, subject to adjustment, that brings the total transaction value to approximately US$758.5 million. This represents a 13.0x multiple of IronPlanet’s 2017 Estimated Adjusted EBITDA, inclusive of the expected $100 million net present value of tax synergies and $20 million in run-rate cost synergies. Ritchie Bros. intends to finance the transaction through a combination of cash on hand and new debt, and has bridge financing commitments from Goldman Sachs Bank USA subject to customary terms and conditions to facilitate the transaction close. Following the close of the transaction and the required financing, Ritchie Bros. is expected to have a net debt to EBITDA ratio of no more than 3.0x. Ritchie Bros. has secured employment agreements with key executives, who will supplement the strength of Ritchie Bros.’ global management team. Mr. Owens has agreed to join the combined company’s executive committee upon closing. The transaction was approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies and is expected to close by the first half of 2017, subject to regulatory clearances and the satisfaction of other customary closing conditions.
