Become the Exception What’s the difference?

Mike Marchev

I was sitting on the couch on a Saturday morning when my wife shared a video of the young golf phenomenon Jordan Speith with me. The President’s Cup was being played in Korea and the young Mr. Spieth was hitting out of a greenside bunker. When his club scooped the sand with a “thunk,” sand began to fly everywhere while the ball was slowly plopping softly onto the green and began meandering toward the hole. “Ka-plunk.” The ball disappeared into the cup. That was the moment when my mind began to do its thing. The difference between a professional and an amateur just unfolded before my very eyes. What is the difference you ask? From the time Jordan Spieth hit his ball into the sand, he began planning his next shot. Arriving at the pit, he perused the situation before firmly planting his feet and calculating the speed and trajectory of his next swing. He wasn’t hoping he would get out of the sand. He was taking aim at the cup and expected his next swing to be the last at this hole. He was right. The amateur on the other hand behaves differently when faced with a challenge. After physically showing dismay, he/she begins to hope, wish and pray that their next shot results in them reaching for the flat stick (putter) and hoping again that two additional strokes will put them out of their misery. Professionals expect good results. Amateurs hope this might be their lucky day. And now back to you, my small business entrepreneurs. When you arrive at work on any given day, are you expecting to win, or are you hoping not to lose? And when you are not plying your trade, are you practicing difficult shots and fine-tuning your muscle memory? Have you paid your dues and are you continuing to pay them? The difference between an amateur and a professional is huge. Which one are you?

Industry News UniCarriers Americas announces Vegusa Maquinaria as its President’s Award winner UniCarriers Americas Corporation (UCA) announces Vegusa Maquinaria, located in Aguascalientes, Mexico, as its President’s Award winner. In November, UCA celebrated the top ten dealers with the first ever UniCarriers Americas’ President’s Club Award dinner, which replaced the Nissan Nine.

“While we are fortunate to work with so many dealers that are well-deserving of praise and recognition, our President’s Award is reserved for companies on a higher echelon,” said James J. Radous III, president at UCA.

As part of the celebration, UCA selected one stand out dealer as the official President’s Award winner. To earn this prestigious award, a dealership must excel in many areas, including: new equipment sales, parts sales, market share and service excellence. The dealer must also possess the characteristics of UCA’s never quit attitude, always going the extra mile and accepting any and all challenges. This year, the President’s Award winner was named as Vegusa Maquinaria. This is the first time, within 26 years, the President’s Award was presented to a dealer in Latin America.

TVH Health Nudge Outside the box wellness in the workplace Lucy DelSarto, TVH Employers looking to retain and recruit employees understand the power behind investing in the company’s number one asset: their employees. Providing quality wellness programs are key to employee engagement and well-being. Wellness is more than lack of sickness. It encompasses empowering, educating and mentoring the healthy lifestyle. The culture environment is a set of beliefs, practices, customs and behaviors that are found to be common in a certain population. Is your company embracing wellness?

an acupuncturist and a hypnotist. Numerous employees participated in the Great American Smoke Out. If nothing changes, nothing changes. Invest in well-being and reap the benefits. “We like to provide options for our employees to improve their quality of life. Lifestyle classes enhance our Wellness Workplace Environment,” CEO Els Thermote said. If you’d like to learn more about our programs for health and wellness at your workplace contact Lucy DelSarto, TVH Health and Wellness Coach at lucy. delsarto@tvh.com.

The success of any goal is to understand what is the “why” behind pursing it. Companies that understand wellness realize investing in the long-term health of employees will have an impact in the present as well. The morale and culture of a wellness driven workplace are shown to have increased productivity and reduced healthcare costs. The potential to reduce health risks and cut health care spending in the long run are two strong reasons employers cannot afford to take for granted that lifestyle-management programs can reduce costs and lead to significant savings.

Safety Corner Forklift safety inspections

Brian Colburn, Forklift Training Systems One of the most challenging issues that companies face with regards to forklift safety is of the inspection checklist. Contrary to popular belief, OSHA does not require these checks to be made in writing and has stated this in a letter of interpretation which is located on their web site. Even so, from a functional and legal standpoint it is very wise to document everything in writing, including these inspections. How can you prove you really are doing them if there is nothing documented? The following are some major problems with regards to forklift inspections: 1) Have the operators been properly trained on what to look for and do they know what to do when they find something wrong? What are your procedures for taking a forklift out of service and do you employ the same lockout/tag-out requirements as on your production machines? If not, you should. Are your supervisors enforcing the forklift inspections or are they part of the problem by putting defective lifts back into service because they are critical to production?

4) People ask how long records have to be maintained, but as you saw in the beginning paragraph, you are not even required to document them in writing. Since most companies will be wise enough to know formal documentation is a good idea, then how long should you keep your records? The simple answer is that you need enough of a time period to prove that you are really doing them. Whether that is a month or six months, that is up to your company to decide, but keeping years of inspection records makes little sense. The newer monitoring systems, such as the Keytroller 601, can force the inspection, record it electronically and can even lock out defective forklifts from service and email management about the defect. Those with larger fleets will want to consider looking into that technology. Give us a call if you want to learn more about the possibilities. Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems, provider of forklift safety training and materials, can be reached at 614-583-5749 or editorial@network.com. www.forklifttrainingsystems.com

2) Are the inspections really being done or are they being pencil whipped by filling out the whole list in 60 seconds without even taking a decent look at the units? I have seen checklists with 75 items, which are unreasonably long and others with just five items that are too short to do the job. Be sure your checklists cover all the items for your type of lift (reach, picker, pallet jack, etc.) and that they don’t have a bunch of items which do not apply to your units or application. You can use the operator’s manual for a guide on what items to put on your internal checklist or OSHA has a list on their website. 3) Those with very large fleets that run around the clock can generate a mountain of paperwork. If you have 75 forklifts and run three shifts, seven days a week you’d better have a huge filing cabinet. An OSHA compliance officer told me that he conducted an inspection on 25 of a customer’s 80 forklifts and that 16 of the 25 he inspected failed and had to be removed from service!

Industry News

North American Robotics Market sets new records Robot orders and shipments in North America set new records in the first nine months of 2016, according to Robotic Industries Association (RIA), the industry’s trade group. A total of 23,985 robots valued at $1.3 billion were ordered from North American companies in the first nine months of 2016, an increase of seven percent in units and three percent in dollars over the same period in 2015, which held the previous record. Robot shipments to North American customers through September totaled 22,050 robots valued at $1.3 billion, breaking the previous record set in 2015 by three percent in units and 11% in dollars. The record sales levels were driven primarily by strong growth in demand from automotive OEMs and component suppliers. Robot orders from these two sectors were up 14% through September. Outside of automotive, robots ordered into the food & consumer goods industry increased substantially by 40% year over year. RIA estimates that some 269,000 robots are now at use in North American factories, which is third to only Japan and China.

“It’s a great time to get involved with robotics,” said Jeff Burnstein, President of RIA. “Today’s robotics industry offers innovative products, fulfilling employment opportunities, and competitive advantages for a wide variety of companies.” RIA sees the rising interest in robotics reflected in the growth of its membership and networking events. In October, RIA reached a new membership milestone with 419 member companies from across the globe. The trade group also concluded its National Robot Safety Conference and International Collaborative Robots Workshop in Cincinnati, which together had record attendance. The collocated events drew users, OEMs, integrators, and manufacturers of all sizes who were interested in learning about the latest in robot safety, collaborative technology, and other innovative developments in the industry.

Feature New lease accounting rules: Eight steps to help transition

By Ralph Petta President and CEO, Equipment Leasing and Finance Association The new rules for lease accounting approved by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) are scheduled to take effect for financial periods starting after Dec. 15, 2018 for public companies and after Dec. 15, 2019 for private companies, with a modified application for any other financial period presented. While organizations may be aware of the pending changes, many are not up to speed in their progress in transitioning to the new accounting standard, known as Accounting Standards Codification Topic 842 (ASC 842). The new FASB standard will modify the accounting for all leases which are in effect during the transition period. This means that although the standard applies to financial periods starting after December 15, 2018, it will require a restatement for the financial reporting of prior periods also. Who will be impacted Lease accounting changes affect both lessee and lessor organizations. Many lessors also act in the capacity of a lessee and thus may have the need to have lessee-oriented lease accounting functionality in place. While lessee accounting will change much more so than lessor accounting, the analytical process that both lessees and lessors should go through may be similar. Additionally, many lessors that are subsidiaries of other companies, such as banks and manufacturers, may be called upon by their parent organizations to assist in analyzing their own leases where they are acting as a lessee. Lastly, agreements other than leases will also be examined since they may very well be construed to either contain a lease or to be a lease under ASC 842. Various surveys conducted after the new standard was approved showed that a majority of companies were only in the early stages of preparation to implement it. Another showed that less than 10 percent of companies have systems in place to comply with the new rules. Given that the new lease accounting rules may impact different parts of an organization, people will need to be engaged and policies, processes and procedures ramped up to meet the challenges. Accordingly, the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association has compiled some high level steps that both lessees and lessors may consider following in the transition to the new lease accounting standard. 1. Start NOW. Initial steps should include budgeting time and resources to perform the work. This includes determining which resources will be sourced internally and which shall be outsourced. The time estimated to make the transition is up to a year domestically and up to 24 months for a global program.

2. Designate the project team. This team will oversee the transition process, establish timelines and be responsible for timely, effective project completion. The team should be comprised of representatives that lease equipment, administer leases or use information regarding leases. The team is likely to come from the finance/treasury, lease administration, IT, accounting and business units. Designate one owner for the equipment leasing program who is responsible for establishing uniform processes, policies and controls of leased equipment, and to act as executive sponsor. The team should also include individuals who understand or can identify the full scope of agreements that an entity may be involved with, not just those agreements described as leases. 3. Know the new rules. The project team as well as the wider organization should understand the new standard, including implementation deadlines, challenges and risks, and how functions within the organization must adapt to address them. Training and informational sessions should be arranged as necessary. 4. Build a detailed implementation plan. The team should develop and have in place an initial and an updated plan of the steps to be undertaken for the transition. These should identify deliverables and processes, including back scheduling from implementation deadlines to establish timelines. 5. Inventory all equipment leases, real estate leases and other agreements in a centralized, electronic repository. In addition to operating and capital/finance leases, there are other forms of existing agreements and contracts that may be construed to be leases that should also be identified. These can include multiple-element arrangements that combine services, software, hardware and/or financing, and contracts such as power purchase agreements and supply contracts. All should be fully documented and compiled into similar categories for more efficient management and analysis. This will help decide whether the organization should elect either of the two available practical expedients that must be applied consistently to all leases. This determination will apply not only to reporting existing leases and other agreements during the transition phase, but also determine future accounting policy decisions.

www.mhnetwork.com

6. Prepare a high level “if, then” type of analysis. In the transition phase, it is key to determine the effects of whether or not to implement either or both of the two specific practical expedients. If elected, a practical expedient must be applied to all leases and agreements. The first practical expedient can be called the “prior conclusions” practical expedient under which previous conclusions are respected while the new accounting is applied to those conclusions. So, if elected, an operating lease remains classified as an operating lease under ASC 842 but is nonetheless subject to being capitalized by the lessee. Further, a service contract such as certain energy agreements, remain classified as such and are not subject to ASC 842. The other practical expedient is the “hindsight application” practical expedient, which allows one to use hindsight of activity which occurred during the transaction period in the application of ASC 842. While simply electing both practical expedients may seem like a natural and relatively easy step to take, both lessors and lessees should examine their portfolios of leases and other agreements and determine the effect electing the practical expedients would have on the entity’s financial reporting. The if/then analysis can be conducted on a sample size of the various agreement categories identified in step 5. 7. Determine IT capabilities and requirements. Assess the organization’s existing IT structure and whether it can handle issues such as data extraction, information and document storage and the reporting requirements of the new standard. Lessees may be challenged in their ability to account for the capitalized lease liability as a loan for all of their existing leases and agreements. Leveraging IT tools and support will enable the organization to better manage the transition, as well as equip your organization for post-transition lease accounting. 8. Identify gaps in performance and capabilities. Assess existing lease accounting policies, procedures, and controls and perform a gap analysis to determine which require changes. Determine which options to follow to reach the desired future state of tracking and financial reporting for agreements subject to ASC 842.

Industry News Raymond Handling raises funds with pink pallet jack auction Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation (RHCC), a materials handling equipment supplier in Northern California and the Northwest, announced the winning bid on its third annual Pink Pallet Jack Project online auction was $4,000 by John Souza of J and K Trucking. Showing its continued support of Raymond Handling’s fundraising efforts, this year marks the third year Souza’s company has placed the winning bid. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, all proceeds raised from this year’s auction were donated evenly between the Tina Fund in Greene, New York and the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation in Fremont, California. Michael Engle (left), Board Chair of HERS Breast Cancer Foundation and Dr. Vera Packard (center), Executive Director of HERS Breast Cancer Foundation, pictured with Steve Raymond, President of Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation, at the open house event in Fremont, California.

“Altogether, Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation was able to raise approximately $9,000 to benefit two worthy breast cancer charities,” comments Steve Raymond, President. “We are thrilled to see our Pink Pallet Jack Project’s continued success in uniting our network and communities together in the support of finding a cure. Since 2014, we have raised more than $120,000 for charity, a large portion of this amount coming from the Pink Pallet Jack Project.” Raymond Handling Concepts expanded its fundraising efforts this year with its first “Beat Breast Cancer” rummage sale held in August at its offices in Auburn, Washington, where additional funds were raised for the Tina Fund and HERS Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition to the auction, RHCC hosted a community open house and raffle at its Fremont, California facility on October 20, 2016. Several of Raymond Handling’s vendor partners attended and supported the event by donating items to the raffle including Vestil who donated a hand pallet jack painted pink and Abacus who contributed a number of premium golf bags. Also in attendance were 70 guests from the local communities including Tesla, Sysco, and CoreMark, and Lilly Mae, Vice Mayor of Fremont, who wrote a personal check donated to the HERS foundation. www.raymondhandling.com

Industry News Equipment rental revenue looks for modest gains The latest five-year forecast for the equipment rental industry released by the American Rental Association (ARA) remains positive, even as several economic factors point toward more modest increases over the next five years. ARA now projects equipment rental revenue reach $55.5 billion in the United States in 2020. The numbers in the forecast, updated at the end of October, reflect recent changes in the marketplace as the forecast calls for industry revenue to increase by 4.3 percent in 2016 to a record $47.3 billion and to grow another 3.4 percent in 2017 to reach $49.0 billion. “While we are forecasting a gradual slowing in the growth of rental revenues in this quarterly update compared to our last quarter, we are still showing rental revenue growth in excess of the growth in the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP),” says John McClelland, ARA’s vice president for government affairs and chief economist. “Our outlook for the equipment rental industry continues to be positive and our scenario analysis suggests that if a mild recession were to hit the U.S in 2017 — of which there is a 20 percent chance — there would not be a significant impact

on the equipment rental industry because the likely cause of such a recession would be a weakening in economic activity in Europe,” McClelland says. The results of the U.S. elections could have an impact, but IHS Markit, the economic forecasting firm that compiles data for the ARA Rental Market Monitor™ as part of a partnership with ARA and RENTAL MANAGEMENT, expects that no matter the outcome, the most likely result will be in the range of the just-released forecast. Scott Hazelton, managing director, IHS Markit, says political uncertainty, both domestically and abroad, is creating delayed recoveries in oil and commodity markets, which in turn delays investment decisions. “The result is a somewhat slower pace of economic activity, particularly in capital goods intensive markets, such as construction and energy exploration. However, the U.S. economy remains fundamentally solid and some domestic uncertainty will dissipate after the election. The result is a modest reduction in expected rental revenue growth. However, the outlook continues to be one of growth and growth that will outpace the broader economy,” Hazelton says. www.ARArental.org

Industry News Jamco gives back This year, the team wanted to do something even bigger. We knew we could do something more,” Fontanez says. After discussions with her assistant, Kaitlyn Ocker, the foundation of a plan was formed. Ocker suggested reaching out to the American Cancer Society. Since Jamco sells rents and services forklifts, Fontanez suggested painting one of its 5,000lbs Doosan Pneumatic forklifts pink and having a portion of the rentals of that forklift benefit breast cancer research. “This made perfect sense. Everybody knows someone who has been affected by cancer. Cancer runs in my family. We decided to benefit breast cancer because this is a very common form of cancer and some of our staff members have been personally impacted by this disease,” Fontanez says. For the past several years, Carol Fontanez, rental manager at Jamco Inc in North Orlando, Fla., and her team have been finding ways to benefit their community. They have used the traditional methods — offering extensive discounts for forklift rentals to nonprofit organizations — and have taken a more unique approach — “adopting” a road in Sanford and making sure it stays clean and free of litter.

The next step was to approach her boss, Tim Jamal, vice president of Jamco Inc. “I was immediately intrigued. My mom is in remission from ovarian cancer. I thought this was a wonderful way to help a good cause and it will definitely draw attention. I see it as a win-win for everyone,” he says. 15% of rental revenue earned will go directly to the American Cancer Society for research to fight breast cancer. www.jamco1.com

How-To Flue spacers, fire safety and building codes Lately there’s been a big push for workplace safety in material handling, warehousing and logistics. It’s not only on the part of government agencies like OSHA, but employers, consumers and industry organizations as well. Over the course of the last several years, the trend seems to have been for all of these different parties to converge on the idea that safety should be one of the primary concerns of those overseeing warehouse operations — right up there with managing efficiency and ensuring the warehouse contributes to profitability instead of detracting from it. While different people from different industries and organizations will have widely varying opinions on how best to achieve a safer yet profitable warehouse environment, there will more than likely be some agreement about basic safety measures that can substantially increase safety while requiring minimal time and financial investments. A good example of this is pallet rack anchors, which should be used with virtually all pallet rack applications per ANSI/RMI requirements, and which are generally cheap and easy to use. Another great example that we’ll be covering more in-depth in this article is the flue spacer, an important but often neglected piece of the

warehouse safety puzzle. What flue spacers and pallet stops do Flue spacers and pallet stops are closely related, and some flue spacers, such as the WorldStop by WorldWide Material Handling, do both jobs at the same time. In order to understand how this works, it’s important to know the definition of a flue space. In a pallet rack system, there are two types of flue spaces. The first type is referred to as a longitudinal flue space, and it can be described as the horizontal space between two rows of pallet rack. The second type is called a transverse flue space, and it can best be described as the space between two loads on a pallet rack beam level. Why do flue spaces matter? The safety of an entire building and its occupants can depend on them. In order for a warehouse’s sprinkler system to be effective should it ever have to be used, there needs to be a minimum amount of space in between objects that would obstruct the sprinklers’ ability to reach the lower levels. If a fire started on the ground level and there were no flue spaces in the warehouse, the water flowing from the ceiling would be rendered

How-To useless and the fire could spread more quickly. Having open spaces also allows the fire to vent vertically, slowing down the horizontal spreading of the fire. This is also one of the reasons why we typically encourage the use of wire mesh decks over solid decking, such as plywood. When a pallet stop doubles as a flue spacer, it serves the dual functions of keeping pallets from being pushed off the rear side of the beam level while keeping a minimum longitudinal flue space maintained between rows of racking. When space gets tight and warehouse managers push for more inventory to be stored in less space, it can be critical to have a failsafe like flue spacers in place to keep flue spacers from being crowded out. Besides helping provide a baseline level of warehouse safety, flue spacers have secondary benefits as well. Keeping your product organized In a fast paced and competitive warehouse culture, it can be easy for organization and order to play second fiddle to speed and throughput. And when more orders are moving and sales are up, this method can be hard to argue against. However, the two aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. With flue spacers, ideal pallet placement is enforced by the flue spacers themselves. A quick, efficient method of pallet loading can be maintained while keeping flue spaces unobstructed and loads properly organized.

hardware, and can easily be screwed into place. No fabrication or technical skill is required. With the help of an installation team, these accessories can be in place in short order. When considering the time and money that can be lost by not being proactive about safety, installing flue spacers becomes an even more cost effective decision. And, with a wide variety of sizes in production, the vast majority of warehouse operations can be accommodated. If you find yourself skeptical of the need to use pallet rack safety accessories, pause and consider the potential benefits of implementing a given accessory, the risks of not doing so, and the actual cost. In some situations, the cost of using a safety product will negate the minimal-to-absent benefits of doing so. However, in many cases it will become obvious that there’s more to be gained than lost. In our experience, this is often the case with flue spacers. Have more questions about flue spacers or need a quote for your customer? NOW THERE ARE

Complying with local and national codes Wherever a warehouse is located, odds are it’ll need to comply with a combination of local, regional and national safety codes. In many jurisdictions, these codes will mandate the use of flue spacers for the purpose of fire safety. While some codes may only require the use of flue spacers for rack systems over a certain height and others may not require them at all, it’s often better to err on the side of safety and install flue spacers. So, what is the cure for such a predicament? 1. The operator should always show respect for such a machine and go through a training session with the manufacturer’s rep.

Slip sliding away! A situation does exist that owners of floor scrubbers should be aware. When an operator is scrubbing the surface in any environment, he or she should always monitor whether the dirty water is being vacuumed properly. Cleaning large areas of any plant with a scrubber and leaving water behind on the floor could create a dangerous and unnecessary encounter. One can only imagine how slippery the surface becomes when not properly picked up. The floor could be compared to a sheet of ice on a ice skating rink. And yes, they become that slippery so one is just inviting a hosts of problems. Imagine for example how the forklifts get around in the warehouse. The forklift tires just spin. The equipment remains stationary. When it comes to the scrubber, it is also the same answer. It is also prone to slippage as the forklift does not have a monopoly on this phenomenon. The brand or manufacturer of the scrubber matters not, for all have the same problem of wet floors/surfaces. Be it Tennant Model M20, Advance CS7000, the Power Boss Commander 88 or others. They all have the same problem. They will slip and slide. Of course this creates a very dangerous purlieu as I have heard of scrubbers crashing into walls, pallet racking, and other mobile equipment such as forklifts. Even worse, as I have heard of scrubbers running off docks. It is even possible that the operator could hit warehouse people, so this topic is very serious.

4. And lastly, by using or installing what is called a scrubber compound tire, aka: non-skid tire.” This is still a little known fact that tires were developed as being non-skid. There has to be a better effort to educate the end user about these tires. These compounds or chemicals are adding into the rubber mixture as the tire is being molded. These compounds cure as the tires cures or hardens. So you cannot have your present tires modified. These must be purchased new. If you already have tires in stock to put on the scrubber and don’t know if they are non-skid type, e-mail me as I can help you identify these tires. Or if you need help

Creamer's Corner finding a vendor, I also can help. 5. The “x” factor. There has always been a question of whether your tires should have traction or flat with no traction. Some argue that with no traction (being flat), the tire has more surface area that meets the floor, hence better traction. Others disagree with this theory and answer with the “x” factor. They say buy a tire with not only traction, but have the tire “x” grooved. The argument here is that when the water comes in contact with this type of tire, the water is dimensionally redirected away from the tire, therefore better traction. Anyway, with these type tires installed on your scrubber, your machine will no longer slip slide away!

Business Profile Kollmorgen celebrates 100 years of innovation Kollmorgen, provider of motion systems and components, celebrates 100 years of innovation in 2016 while continuing to introduce pioneering product solutions that adeptly perform in critical, demanding, and diverse environments.

and consumer proven 100 BaseT CAT 5 cabling with standard connectors and a wide array of custom and other robust industrial connector types to drive the world’s most demanding motion applications.

Since the introduction of founder Dr. Friedrich Kollmorgen’s patented two-telescope design in 1911, and the incorporation of Kollmorgen Optical Corp. in New York on March 22, 1916, the company has successfully grown by merging with like-minded visionaries, such as Norman Macbeth, president of Macbeth Daylighting Company; Hugo Unruh, founder of Inland Motor; and Robert Swiggett, printed circuit board inventor from Photocircuits Corp. Kollmorgen’s motors, drives and controls are relied on to perform in all types of applications, including the Mars Rover and International Space Station; ships and submarines; O&G drilling and metrology; surgical robots and laser eye surgery; and even at work in artifical hearts.

In 2002, the first Segway models, powered by a Kollmorgen electric motor that delivers 40% more torque per unit of volume than comparably sized motors, were sold to the public.

INNOVATION HIGHLIGHTS The dominant U.S. periscope manufacturer from World War I to 1958; in the mid-70s, became the leading supplier of submarine periscopes in international markets; in the late 80s, combined viewing sensors and electro-magnetic sensors in a single, non-penetrating mast for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The sole source supplier of auxiliary sights for the M-1 tank and Bradley Fighting Vehicles throughout the 1980s. In the late 70s, pioneered rare earth magnet motors and servo-controlled bearings that used the force of a magnetic field to levitate a rotor and eliminate mechanical contact. Powered a specially designed robot, the Jason Jr., that researcher Dr. Robert Ballard used to telepresent images of the RMS Titanic on July 26, 1986. Deployed laser navigation for warehousing automation in Singapore in 1997, the first of its kind to gain acceptance in Asian and global markets. Utilized in the da Vinci Surgery System, the first robotic surgery system approved by the FDA for general laparoscopic surgery in 2000. Helped build the world’s first successful self-contained artificial heart and Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) in 2001. Launched SynqNet®, a fast, interoperable motion and I/O network that enabled a synchronous real-time connection between the motion controller, servo drives, I/O modules, and custom nodes. SynqNet was the first platform to use industry

PiCPro® made a mark on the Machine Tool industry in 2005 and became one of the leading control software in applications focusing on precision motion. Introduced the Pick-n-Go concept in 2007, automating standard forklifts in order picking processes. Stainless Steel AKMH™ Series Motor introduced in 2014 for strict aseptic machine applications. Produced an energy efficient motor stator in 2015, reducing the power consumption of the HeartAssist5® Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) by 50%. “A determination to find a solution for unique challenges has helped us achieve engineering excellence and true product differentiation throughout our storied history. It’s in our DNA to be the best at solving motion challenges, no matter how difficult, through collaboration with our end users, customers, suppliers, innovation partners, and each other,” said John Boyland, Vice President of Engineering at Kollmorgen. Kollmorgen President Dan St. Martin added, “It is truly an honor and privilege to work for a company that is 100 years old. Very few organizations are able to attain a century of innovative solutions. Our success stems from the daily efforts of our associates in every corner of the world, who bring the company’s vision to life: Enabling Innovators to Make the World a Better Place.” Kollmorgen’s rich heritage of innovation can be explored further by visiting the history page on the Kollmorgen website. A comprehensive timeline of the company’s history and Kollmorgen’s “100 years of Innovation” eBook can be viewed on the Kollmorgen website as well. www.kollmorgen.com
