Mike Marchev “Hardships come but hardships go, and nothing makes both of the peaks more beautiful or its valleys more bearable than humor.” This quote was taking from page 205 from You, Inc., a book written by Harry Beckwith. You don’t have to tell me how stressful this business can be. I know what anxiety feels like, and I know what fear feels like. Now that I think of it, I know what disappointment feels like, and I know what rejection feels like. If one didn’t know better, you would think that I just wrote the definition of entrepreneurship in the travel industry. What keeps me going, and I think what keeps most successful entrepreneurs going, is the fact that they hone the skill of looking at their business and finding the humor in it all. I know that making a living is not a laughing matter, but there are sure times when people prove to the world that they are funny creatures. If you are ever in the need for a good laugh, just take a look at yourself. It works for me. I’m not suggesting that you become a comedian, and I’m not suggesting you become anything but a clown or a jokester. I am suggesting that you hold on to your sense of humor, and find time for a good laugh. I’m reminded of the day with a Russian immigrant told me over dinner, “Mike, if you can’t make it in America you can’t make it.” I will take poetic license and include Canada in this example. Work hard. Play hard. And always find time for a good laugh. You will feel better and you will have your competition wondering, “What’s so funny?”

INDUSTRY NEWS

KION announces agreement with Volvo Car US Operations Inc. As a result, the company estimates they will add 50 jobs in the next three to five years. www.kion-na.com

KION North America announced an agreement with Volvo Car US Operations Inc. The company will now provide material handling equipment for the automotive manufacturer’s first American factory located in Berkeley County, South Carolina. With this agreement, Volvo Car US Operations Inc. will be the first automotive manufacturer to use a fleet made up largely of Lithium-ion battery powered equipment—a rechargeable solution ideal for multi-shift operations. The fleet will include forklifts, reach trucks and very narrow aisle (VNA) trucks, all provided and serviced by KION North America. “This agreement is monumental,” said Mike Gore, vice president of sales at KION North America. “Not only are two global premium manufacturers teaming up, but more importantly two South Carolina businesses, further validating the state’s position as a manufacturing giant.” Headquartered in Summerville, S.C., KION North America is located just five miles from the new Volvo Cars factory, which will be the global production home of the all new S60 Sedan. Equipped with the most innovative and efficient material handling equipment on the market, the factory will be capable of producing up to 100,000 cars per year. Although they’ve maintained a presence in South Carolina for more than 30 years, KION North America’s history can be traced back more than a century. An industry pioneer, the company continues to raise the standard—making them a logical choice as the equipment supplier for Volvo Cars. In 2017, KION North America will release the largest number of new products at one time in both company and material handling equipment industry history. The economic impact of both companies will have lasting effects both locally and nationally. Volvo Car US Operations Inc. estimates that the factory will employ up to 2,000 people over the next decade and up to 4,000 people in the longer term. Following a $3 million facility expansion in 2016, KION North America will increase its production capacity from 3,000 units per year in 2015 to 12,000 units by 2020. 8

TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Walk this way

check out...

MHconX.com weekly Hot Sheet

Lucy DelSarto, TVH

One of the easiest and most sustainable ways to begin your

journey to improve your health is to start walking. Regular walking, like most aerobic activities, is good for you because cardio-vascular exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, increasing overall fitness. Companies offering walking challenges empower employees to be more active as the culture develops team support from co-workers. Challenge participants are take more walking breaks, walking meetings as well as being more mindful of their activity levels during non-work hours. By forming a company group and challenges within the wearable websites (Garmin and FitBit), a little friendly competition provides the extra motivation to go the extra distance and increase daily step averages. Our top five steppers had a daily average step count range between 51,909 and 27,179. TVH top 20 steppers are awarded a T-shirt souvenir with their names listed on the back for each of the quarterly challenges. Els Thermote, CEO walks the walk as she has consistently places in the top 20. Walking challenges provide an equal opportunity for every employee to be involved. The office and warehouse workers enjoy coming together and are walking together. TVH has a half-mile indoor “Nudge Lap” within the warehouse and the outside walking area is three-quarters of a mile. In 2016, TVH employees tracked 365,981,476 steps in our four walking challenges. Given an average length of pace of 2.5 feet and rounding down to 2 feet to allow for times when we are either very old or very young and take shorter paces, this equates to 65,740,092 paces round the Earth. Utilizing that method of calculating to put 2016 steps into perspective: TVH walking challengers combined efforts walked around the equator SIX TIMES! But we don’t plan on stopping there. Since everyone loves having a goal to focus on, our 2017 walking challenge and goal is to increase our step numbers to reach SEVEN TIMES around the world! Wellness is all about taking small steps that the greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it. If you would like to learn more about our programs or health and wellness at your workplace contact Lucy DelSarto at lucy.delsarto@ tvh.com.

SAFETY CORNER

Forklift trainer qualification Brian Colburn, Forklift Training Systems The subject of who should be teaching the safe operation of forklifts is always a hot one. Before the forklift standard (OSHA 29CFR1910.178) was revised in 1998, OSHA was silent on the issue of forklift trainer’s qualifications. The revised standard added section (l)(2)(iii) “All operator training and evaluation shall be conducted by persons who have the knowledge, training and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their competence.” It stills seems a bit vague, but is much better than nothing. What if we applied these types of criteria to airline pilots and their trainers, would the skies be safe? Would you want your family flying to their vacation on a plane with a pilot who was trained by a trainer with very vague qualification requirements? The answer is “no” and that is why there are very strict criteria for pilot trainers in aviation. We should expect professionalism and the right levels of experience from forklift trainers in order to produce safe and operational forklift operators. Many people selling forklift trainer materials make the argument that no one needs to attend a formal trainer’s class. They say that anyone can be a forklift trainer if they’ve ever driven a forklift or if they have spent any time around them, which is just crazy. OSHA does give some further explanation in the Federal Register which states “An example of a qualified trainer would be a person who, by possession of a recognized degree, certificate or professional standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training, and experience has demonstrated the ability to train and evaluate powered industrial truck operators.” We have trained many forklift trainers and usually find that they come from the operations side and have lots of forklift experience, but very little exposure to OSHA/safety issues; or just the opposite, have come from the safety ranks and have little practical forklift operation experience. The challenge in training forklift trainers is to take both groups and give each of them what they need to succeed. Good quality, up to date materials are important in conducting good forklift training, but the most critical element is the quality of the forklift trainer. The job of forklift trainer takes a total commitment to quality, patience, enthusiasm, skill and a high value for the lives of others. The job qualifications closely match those of athletic sports coaches because forklift trainers really are coaches in an industrial setting, imparting knowledge and encouraging their trainees to be the best they can be. Trainers need to be more than DVD inserters. Great trainer’s programs assign advance work to the trainees and they make them earn their credentials vs. simply showing up and getting a piece of paper that says they attended. The class 18

should help trainer’s improve their knowledge, teach with passion, identify and fix workplace hazards and remind operators the real reasons they should want to help others work safe. Caster Concepts acquires golf equipment manufacturer Caster Concepts Inc., manufacturer of heavy-duty industrial casters and wheels, announces the acquisition of Mitchell Golf Equipment Company, producer of professional club performance tools, repair equipment and supplies. Caster Concepts relocated production of all Mitchell Golf products from Dayton, Ohio, to its headquarters in Albion. Three of Mitchell's five employees have relocated to Michigan. Caster Concepts plans to hire an additional three employees to oversee production and sales. The acquisition of Mitchell Golf Equipment (MitchellGolf. com) fits naturally into Caster Concepts' plans for growth and expansion. Over the past five years, Caster Concepts has acquired four companies, expanding its manufacturing capabilities, growing its employee base and broadening its market nationally and internationally. Apart from Mitchell Golf Equipment, Caster Concepts has acquired Larcaster/ Owl Welding Co.; Modern Suspension Systems, and Albion Machine and Tool. "Caster Concepts has actively purchased companies that fit within its manufacturing scope and provide growth opportunities," says William H. Dobbins, president of Caster Concepts. "The manufacturing of golf equipment requires the same kind of precision machining, which fits nicely with our core manufacturing and production competencies. In fact, we plan to expand several of our key manufacturing components of engineering, design, fabrication and polyurethane production." For Mitchell Golf Equipment, the acquisition ends the search for a partner that would continue the company's manufacturing expertise and deliver high-quality products customers have been accustomed to for 29 years. "I am excited for the future of Mitchell Golf as we write the next chapter of the company," said Ed Mitchell, founder and CEO of Mitchell Golf Equipment. "We're going to work hard to streamline the manufacturing process, aggressively address opportunities for product improvement and actively do new-product development." Mitchell will remain actively involved with Caster Concepts, assuming a key role in sales, customer service and new-product development to maintain the continuity of the Mitchell Golf brand. www.CasterConcepts.com

J.W. Winco offers hook-type latches lockable

TVH presents new collision and pedestrian sensor

These RoHS compliant hook-type latches with hook and latch bracket are mainly used for sliding doors and flaps. The locking action is in radial direction to the axis of rotation, resulting in a wide variety of different uses. Two keys are supplied with the unit, and the key can be removed in both end positions. The latches are supplied with the hook enclosed loose, while hook-type latches with other latch distances or other pivoting ratios are available upon request. The latch housing is zinc die-cast, while the locating ring is zinc die-cast, chrome plated or with a black powder coated textured finish. www.jwwinco.com

TVH in the Americas announces a high quality collision sensor added to their vast lineup of safety products. The sensor can not only detect machinery like forklifts and lift pallets but also detects pedestrians which can dramatically reduce collisions and injuries. This high-tech sensor is programmed to detect motion within 25 feet in both directions using state of the art infrared motion detectors. It is also equipped with highly visible LED lights placed on both sides of the devise. The lights will begin to flash when the sensor detects motion coming from both directions to warn both the forklift drivers and pedestrians of an anticipated collision. www.tvh.com

Floor scale and weight indicator for high traffic applications A low-profile floor scale and digital weight indicator built for heavy-duty legal-for-trade applications involving a lot of weighing per day are being introduced by Alliance Scale, Inc. of Canton, Massachusetts. The Alliance RoughDeck® Floor Scale and 480 Legend™ Series Digital Weight Indicator from Rice Lake are built for heavy-duty high traffic applications. The floor scale utilizes a full 6” structural steel channel frame welded to a treadplate steel deck to minimize deflection, isolates the load cells, protects the cables, and mounts the junction box in a slide-out tray while the weight indicator has a NEMA 4x/IP66 stainless steel enclosure. www.alliancescale.com

Calculator facilitates tire selection in forklift applications and helps to reduce operating costs. Camso has developed its usage intensity calculator, a webbased tool that quantifies different levels of forklift application intensities. Factbased, built on thousands of hours of testing, it takes into account parameters like lift capacity, working environment as well as idle, travel and maneuvering time. In a few clicks, the systems outputs a forklifts’ application intensity score. It also offers a recommended Solideal tire manufactured by Camso promising maximum tire life for the application analyzed. www.camso.co

New WSI Global’s EdgePack carton accumulator WSI Global announces that it offers the EdgePack, a semi-automatic carton accumulator that dramatically increases production speed and worker safety over manual case packing. The EdgePack is situated after a folder/ gluer in a carton converting line, where it turns the folded and glued carton shingle onto its folded edge. The EdgePack maintains the counted kick and lines cartons up for tray or slipsheet case packing, all while eliminating the repetitive wrist motion required by packers in manual case packing operations. www.wsiglobal.com

HOW-TO

Machine perimeter fencing Today’s working conditions in developed nations are relatively safe compared to those in the past. During the past two centuries, improvements in technology, regulatory measures and organized efforts to improve workplace safety have cut workplace injuries and deaths to a tiny fraction of what they used to be. Workplace fatalities dropped from 61 per 100,000 in 1913 to 3.4 per 100,000 in 2015. From 1992 to 2010, there was an average annual decrease in machine-related deaths of 2.8%. Machine safety Most of the gains in safety haven’t been achieved by accident. While causes of injuries vary by industry, the common theme among all of these industries is that deliberate efforts are made to make injuries less common. In manufacturing, one of the fundamental and time-tested safety measures is the inclusion of machine guarding. Safety fencing secures a perimeter around potentially dangerous machinery that can only be breached by authorized personnel. Machine perimeter fencing isn’t a silver bullet solution to machine-related accidents. Once workers are inside the fencing, it’s still possible to come into contact with hazardous machine parts. However, the fencing is highly effective at keeping unauthorized and inexperienced personnel away from dangerous machines and reducing the likelihood of accidental contact with them in the first place. Anyone entering the enclosed area will be doing so on purpose in order to use or repair the machine, and so will not have fallen into the machine or come into contact with it unexpectedly. Machine perimeter fencing: it’s the law Machine guarding isn’t just a recommended add-on for warehouses with machinery areas; it’s an OSHA requirement. As part of their ongoing effort to reduce machinery-related injuries and deaths in the workplace, OSHA requires machinery areas in warehouses to be enclosed by appropriate safety fencing. Like or dislike, agree or disagree, machine perimeter fencing is legally required in warehouse machinery areas, and failure to comply may result in stiff penalties and fines. The potential cost of OSHA penalties or harm to personnel will put any of the inconvenience of machine perimeter fencing into perspective for most warehouse managers. Machine guard fencing features and specs Machine perimeter guarding, such as the Saf-T-Fence from Folding Guard, are often sold as modular units to provide flexibility in terms of design and area coverage. If needs change, the individual components can be switched around, added, or subtracted. A variety of locking options and door styles allow warehouse operators to hand pick the components that 38

work best for their application. Considering the stakes (safety, wellbeing, employee morale, OSHA penalties), safety fencing is a cost effective solution that won’t crush the company’s bottom line. Made from high strength materials, machine safety fencing is not a recurring cost, but a stable long-term safety investment. As a matter of good practice, machine perimeter fencing should be high on the list of things to check for when doing a walk-through of a client’s warehouse. If a warehouse machinery area lacks the required fencing, the owners of the operation could face serious penalties and are at higher risk of loss time injuries. Machine guarding is a simple value add for clients already planning to install pallet rack and safety products. Remember to give us a call or email us to learn more about machine perimeter fencing and other safety products. Our goal is to help you, so let us know if there’s information you’d like to see featured in our blog, website, or emails! BUSINESS PROFILE

National Lift Truck celebrates 60 years The National groups of companies are a DuBose family owned & operated business with six centrally located sites in the US. Originally started by William Perry DuBose servicing forklifts, the companies have grown to offer sales, rentals, parts, training, warehouse eq, racking, storage and transportation. They remain a 100% family owned business today, operated by DuBose’s two sons, Perry & Jeff Paul. Each company provides very similar equipment. Representing global brands such as CLARK, Unicarriers, and Hyundai Forklifts, JLG, Genie and Skyjack Aerial Equipment, Skytrak Telehandlers, Sellick Rough Terrain equipment, and Versa-Lift & Hoist FR equipment for heavy lifting. What has made National different from the rest is they offer what the customers demand, regardless of brand affiliation. If the customer has a need, National has a solution. The companies offer financing, leasing and other options to make procuring equipment a very easy option for their clients. They are a complete provider of solutions to many different types of businesses, including other material handling companies. Jeff Paul DuBose, president, notes, “We don’t believe in competition, instead we have many different types of customers.” One of the largest strengths the National Lift companies has is their rental department with daily, weekly, monthly and long-term options for all styles of equipment. From the dedicated staff, to their extensive inventory of over 3,000 pieces, National’s strength is the ability to serve the customers’ needs every time. CEO Perry DuBose believes, “If we don’t have it, we get it for our customer. We want to partner with our customers, not just be another vendor.” Every company offers service of all makes and models of material

handling equipment. From factory trained in-house technicians with modern shop equipment, to their mobile repair technicians, all of Nationals customers are served with efficiency & professionalism that keeps them up & running. Complementing the service department is their extensive parts department keeping near $1M of inventory on hand, every day to make sure parts are readily available to their customers. Each location offers local parts deliveries, notes John Hopkins, parts manager of National Lift, LLC in Memphis. “Special relationships with carriers like FedEx allow us to ship parts, anywhere, cost effectively,” said Hopkins. National offers customers a wide range of hauling, transportation, and delivery services for machinery, equipment and other loads. Tractor-trailers, lowboys, tilt beds and more – they have the equipment to move anything the customers need to. Now, pair that with their large facilities offering secured inside and outside storage, National quickly becomes their logistics company, and the provider of the equipment to move their loads. National Lift Truck, located in the Chicagoland area, will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2017 serving all types of customers, nationwide & internationally. National Battery is also located within National Lift Truck’s building and is a complete industrial power company offering new & used batteries & chargers. National Lift located in Memphis & Jackson, TN is the newest company, established back in 2000, but they have been serving that area for over 30 years. The fourth location, National Lift of Arkansas located in Little Rock & Springdale AR is the 3rd oldest company, celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2018. www.nlt.com
