To sell is human

Mike Marchev

“Injecting the personal into the professional can boost performance and increase quality of care. Yet in the name of professionalism, we often neglect the human element and adopt a stance that’s abstract and distant.” This month’s quote is taken from “To Sell is Human” by Daniel Pink. This passage on page 212 reminded me of how many socalled “business professionals” still adopt the phrase, “Don’t take it personally, it is just business.” This positioning statement might have been true 20 years ago, but today it borders on lunacy. Business is personal today for the simple reason that today’s successful business is built on relationships. And by its very definition, relationships are personal. If you want to become a successful business entrepreneur, begin to rely on your personality while showing more genuine empathy and interest toward your prospects and clients. Begin to take relationships “personally.” Lower your protective barriers and show me the real you, flaws and all. The days for admiring and rewarding the pompous big shots are long gone. Inject a little more “personal” into your communications and get ready to reap the benefits. Mike Marchev, president of Head First Sales, is a featured Sales Motivational Speaker at franchise, association, and corporate meetings around the world. His column appears regularly in industry magazines and E-zines and he is the author of four books, the most popular being Become the Exception. Send your questions and comments to editorial@mhnetwork.com for Mike. www.mikemarchev.com

TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Stay calm & plank on Lucy DelSarto, TVH

Earlier this year, over 260 TVH employees competed in their first Plank Challenge. Health and Wellness Coach Lucy DelSarto, who was inspired by an employee’s son who was photographed planking while learning to crawl, challenged employees from all TVH Americas locations to hold a plank for a minimum of 15 seconds. You may be wondering what is a plank and how can it improve my health? A plank is similar to a push-up;

however, you hold your body straight as a plank for as long as you can. If you've never tried one, a plank may look too easy to be beneficial, but this is one of the best core exercises to build isometric strength helping to sculpt your waistline and improve your posture. The Plank Challenge proved to be a great team building activity that can be added to the meeting schedule or break time. It requires no equipment, little space and an easy way to enhance your physical well-being. With participation close to 30% of the TVH workforce, employees were planking in the hallways of the office buildings and on the floor in the warehouses. The Top Planker with a time of 10 minutes and 9 seconds was held by CEO, Els Thermote. The Top Planking team consisted of TVH Executives: Els Thermote, CEO (10:09), Dirk Von Holt, Vice President of Sales and Marketing (3:00); and Frank Carter, Vice President & General Manager (2:30). Our Leaders certainly lead by example here. Our company average time was 1 minute and 28 seconds. INDUSTRY NEWS

Toyota Industries creates new logistics solutions division Toyota Industries Corporation (“TICO”) recognizes the changing dynamics in the North American material handling market related to e-commerce, labor cost and productivity requirements, which have created a permanent demand for new forms of logistics solutions, beyond forklifts. To align with market changes and customer needs, TICO has created a new business division to manage North American activities in the area of logistics solutions named “Toyota Advanced Logistics Solutions” (TALS). TALS shall be operated separately from the forklift business, except for coordination in strategic areas as appropriate. TICO is also pleased to announce the acquisition of Bastian Solutions, LLC, a leading systems integrator with regional US operations and presence in strategically significant international markets. Bastian Solutions will be the first group company in the TALS operative structure, until further plans for strategic growth are announced. In order to formalize the management framework for Toyota Advanced Logistics Solutions, the following executive leadership appointment is announced: Mike Romano is appointed President & CEO of Toyota Advanced Logistics Solutions. ment experience, including leadership as President & CEO of Associated Integrated Supply Chain Solutions (“Associated”), a leading industry supplier in the Chicago area. Romano will resign from Associated concurrent with assuming his new role, effective April 3rd, 2017. “TICO chose Bastian Solutions as its first acquisition in this space because Bastian Solutions is a highly respected, solutions oriented systems integrator, positioned as a trusted advisor to the world’s most demanding customers,” noted Mike Romano, who will lead the newly established North American division. “TICO’s current strength in material handling and its longterm strategic vision, combined with Bastian Solutions’ prominence as an innovation leader, will position TALS to address customers’ mission critical needs in ways that are unmatched in the industry.” “TICO’s values are perfectly aligned with ours and we look forward to a strong partnership,” said Bastian Solutions CEO Bill Bastian II. “We expect this combination will benefit customers and expand our business by leveraging TICO’s financial strength and its status as the global leader in material handling. Our team of associates is proud to have built a systems integration platform upon which further investments are made in the context of TICO’s broader North American strategy.” Bill Bastian II is expected to remain CEO of Bastian Solutions, which has a history dating back to 1952. No management changes at the company are planned as a result of the deal. In 2014, Aaron Jones was appointed President of Bastian Solutions, a role that he will maintain through the transition. “TICO will be an exceptional partner for Bastian Solutions,” said Jones, who joined the company in 2005. “We have built a first-rate leadership team, positioned to execute the vision of providing differentiated logistics solutions and customer satisfaction.”   “TMHNA affirms its commitment to the forklift business and intends to accelerate investments toward future growth,” said TMHNA President & CEO, Brett Wood. “TOYOTA and RAYMOND brand forklift dealers and their customers will benefit from the creation of TALS, and TICO’s growing focus in the area of advanced logistics technology.” TMHNA continues to invest in the growth of TICO’s North American material handling business, which has resulted in increased employment levels. The acquisition of Bastian Solutions is subject to regulatory approvals, with a target closing in April 2017. Nixon Peabody served as lead legal advisor to TICO, with Faegre Baker Daniels advising Bastian Solutions. www.tmhu.com

SAFETY CORNER

Hit the books! Brian Colburn, Forklift Training Systems Some of you may have played this game as a kid. You have a number of people in a room, the first one starts with a short story and whispers it in the ear of the next person, that person remembers what he/she can and passes it along. The last person says aloud their version of the story and then the first person says the original version. This usually gets a big laugh because of the big difference from start to end. This is similar to what I see happen in the forklift safety and training sector at times. It is certainly hard to keep all the many standards and rules straight and that goes for any country. In the U.S., we have the OSHA standard, numerous letters of interpretation and a variety of compliance directives from the federal government. There is also quite a few ANSI, also now listed as ITSDF standards, as well as, industry accepted or best practices. On top of that, most large companies also have their own policies which usually go above and beyond government mandated practices. Each year I usually have at least a few times where I get asked questions I should probably know but am not 100% sure. In these cases, I must go back and do my research versus just giving my best guess. Too many times I have heard people, which should know better, giving a customer an answer that is not correct, but stating it with such confidence that the person takes it as fact. People need to learn to question even “experts” by doing their research. Below are several questions which I would challenge you to answer by first guessing and check them against the answer key. These questions are taken from the OSHA forklift standard here in the U.S., but the same type of test could be done in any country with likely the same results. Obviously any company can go above and beyond a standard, but it is always good to know the starting point from where you came when dealing with an enforcement agency such as OSHA or in a court of law. The answers do not reflect my opinions; they are simply what the standard states. If you want to save time finding the answers, use the edit and find functions in your browser with a keyword from the question, it will work much faster than reading the whole standard when looking for something very specific. I urge you not to “trust me” but to “hit the books” on OSHA’s website under 29CFR1910.178. OSHA forklift knowledge test 1) O SHA’s forklift law (29CFR1910.178) says the following about “seatbelts:” A) Seatbelts are mandatory on every forklift in the U.S. B) The word “seatbelt” is not mentioned in the standard, but is covered in several OSHA letters of interpretation. C) It clearly states “they shall be worn at all times with no exception.” D) They must be worn, but only during certain hazardous operations, such as on ramps or during trailer loading. 18

2) Modifications, such as adding additional counterweight or adding an attachment shall not be performed unless: A) You have written approval from the manufacturer. B) The salesperson from the forklift dealership says it is “OK.” C) You are sure the modification will not endanger anyone. D) You get the change approved by OSHA. 3) OSHA requires refresher training every three years? TRUE FALSE 4) If you have off center loads that can’t be centered, OSHA says you must not handle those loads with a forklift. TRUE FALSE 5) OSHA forbids driving on wet or slippery floors with a forklift. TRUE FALSE 6) Forklift operators must stop and sound the horn at cross aisles or where vision is obstructed. TRUE FALSE 7) When operators leave a forklift unattended it must have the key taken out, the brakes set, the controls neutralized and the forks fully lowered. TRUE FALSE ANSWER KEY:

1) B 2) A 3) FALSE - They require a re-evaluation every three years, refresher training is something different. 4) FALSE - They say you must use caution handling them. 5) FALSE - They say you must slow down. 6) FALSE - They say you must slow. 7) FALSE - The power must be off, but the key does not have to be removed.

How well did you score? How sure of your answers were you, enough to advise someone on them?If you were surprised, then you understand the point I was trying to make. Written by Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems, a leading provider of forklift safety training and materials. Today’s warehouse fire protection systems include more than just pipes and sprinklers. When the products being stored include highly flammable items such as plastics, aerosols, liquors or oils, fire baffles may be required inside the racking structure. Solid steel rack decking and flat sheet accessories from DACS make effective fire or heat baffles in warehouse environments. They can be used on storage racks horizontally or vertically to block the spread of fire, or to capture heat SEE US for in-rack sprinkler activation. AT PROMAT

CREAMER'S CORNER

Does your vacuum motor suck? Of the many components of the industrial scrubber, the vacuum motor is one of the more necessary items to the system. You have the rear squeegee, the vacuum hose and the recovery tank. The rear squeegee does what it does, which is to collect the dirty water. The squeegee hose does what it does by allowing the dirty water to flow to the recovery tank. And, the recovery tank does what it does and that is to hold the dirty water until the cleaning process is complete. But, only the vacuum motor brings all of the other parts together to create to vacuum system. And I don’t have to tell you, the vacuum system is the heart of the industrial scrubber, so you may say that the vac motor is the heart of the scrubber so it is necessary to understand and to maintain it properly. Some of the many well known names and models in the industry are Tennant Co. Model 5700, Nilfisk-Advance Model 4530, Minuteman-PowerBoss, American-Lincoln, Hako and

Karcher only to mention a few. All of these manufactures use some kind of vac motor in their system. They include rider scrubbers, sweeper/scrubbers as well as walk-behind scrubbers. There are many types of vac motors being the horn style and the heavy-duty option. Some systems even have a dual vac motor system for the heavy duty vac system. The main role of the vacuum motor is to create a suction at the rear squeegee hose. The dirty water is then vacuumed through the hose into the recovery tank. The recovery tank by the way is also known as the dirty water tank. The vac motor is typically designed with armature, commutator, motor (carbon) brushes, motor fields, rotating fan and the shell. Vac motors are presently being designed without brushes (brushless vac motors), however, they haven’t been perfected as yet. Because the brushes do need to be checked on a regular basis and/or replaced. Testing the vac motor after replacing the brushes is quite simple. Just connect the battery to the jumper leads and the motor should turn on. Troubleshooting guide: The vac motor needs to be replaced when the machine no longer picks up the dirty water. However, there are other reasons that may cause this effect. The vacuum hose may be clogged with debris such as paper and string. The squeegees may not be directly on the surface to be able to suck the dirty water. So these are some of the things that need to be checked. Installation of the vacuum motor or dual vac motors is different from manufacturer to manufacturer, however there are some basics rules to follow. One is very important and that is to always disconnect the batteries before performing this service. Open the recovery tank lid or door and the vac motor will be mounted in this area. Disconnect the main harness to the motor. Usually there are brackets of some type to hold the motor in place. Loosen these or remove if necessary. In some cases, the new vac motor requires a new seal to be installed on the bottom of the motor fan shell. This should be obvious if you look. At this point just reverse the instructions I laid out to install the motor. Installation should be complete. At this point, turn on the machine and get to work scrubbing. Of course, always refer to the specific manufacturer’s service instructions before you proceed with any service to ensure completeness of the process. Sometimes computers need to be reset before using your particular machine. I hope this gives you a new insight to the scrubber vacuum system. If you have a vacuum motor issue please e-mail me. As always, thanks for reading. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/ scrubber. For your comments or questions, please e-mail Mike at editorial@mhnetwork.com.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Future appears bright as Tri Lite celebrates 95 years Tri Lite, Inc., designer and manufacturer of specialty lighting and electrical products for the material handling and safety markets, turns 95-years-old in 2017. The company was originally founded as Trippe Manufacturing in 1922 by Graham Trippe, a Chicago inventor. Mr. Trippe designed the automobile’s first Speed Light, a successful automotive accessory that improved a vehicle’s visibility in fog and at night. Known today as a headlight, the accessory was sold on vehicles ranging from fine touring cars to U.S. army tanks. In the early 1980s Trippe started producing high quality power protection systems for the burgeoning personal computer (PC) market. This foray into PC systems provided an opportunity for department specialization and independence, growing the company in a distinct new direction. Now called Tripp Lite, they continue as a leader in power protection systems. In 1987, Tri Lite was formed as a new company in order to focus on Graham Trippe’s original vision for providing innovative lighting solutions. Keeping lighting its core business, Tri Lite developed a wide variety of lights and options for use in and around warehouses, factories and distribution centers. Using in-house designs and patented technologies, the 95-year-old company offers a large line of flexible solutions for worker safety, comfort and productivity. In the late 1990s a successful Stop and Go signaling system for use on loading docks, car washes, parking lots, garages and drive thru windows was developed. In 2002, the Stop and Go signal lights became the company’s first product to offer the energy saving benefits of LED lighting components. Loading dock lights have been the company’s best sellers since its independence from Trippe. Polycarbonate and Metal LED dock light modules illuminate truck-trailers with energy efficient light heads that can withstand harsh loading dock environments. Made from flame resistant materials that protect from corrosion, pitting and other environmental factors, the lights have a long life. With the help of LEDs, the company has extended the useful life of a dock light from 500 hours to a minimum of 50,000 hours, prompting a generous five-year limited replacement warranty. Customers can now choose between tradition incandescent, high pressure sodium or energy efficient LEDs on most dock lights. Tri Lite has recently unveiled LED versions of two of its most iconic warning lights, the Mars "888" traffic breaker, also known as the TB8 and the RF6. The TB8 is often used on fire trucks, while the RF6 is a heavy duty beacon with many industrial uses. The updated lights still have a classic style, but are now three times brighter and draw less than half the amps or watts of the original incandescent versions. Most recently, a rugged LED loading dock guide light set has been developed. The LEDs make it one of the brightest guide light available, greatly increasing visibility in low-light environments like enclosed dock bays. The LED improvements have made the light easier to see from a distance, even in sunlight. Tri Lite is proud that its innovative lighting and electrical designs are still manufactured in the USA. As the company seeks to anticipate future needs, it remains focused on creating high quality lighting and electrical components, and on an unwavering loyalty to its distribution partners for the next 95-years and beyond. www.triliteinc.com

Forklift of the Year finalists The finalists for the International Forklift Truck of the Year (IFOY) Award 2017 are in. Eleven trucks from Crown, Jungheinrich, kickTrike, SSI Schäfer, Still, Torwegge and UniCarriers have been nominated for the final round from all the entries. "The keywords are electric, autonomous and customised, and intralogistics is the clear leader. The front-runners in the first round for the IFOY Award are the trendsetters and innovation pioneers in the new era of intralogistics", says Anita Würmser, Chair of the IFOY Jury. During the compulsory IFOY Test Days in March on the grounds of IFOY partner Messe München, all nominated vehicles will undergo rigorous trials in competitive testing sessions over the course of one week. The IFOY Test measures the hard data and compares it with the data for rival machines. The IFOY Innovation Check prepared by the specialists from the Dortmund-based Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) as well as the Chair of Machine Elements and Technical Logistics at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, focuses on innovations and the degree of innovation relative to the market. In Remanufactured Transmissions, Engines, Torque Converters, Steer Axles, Overhaul Kits and Aftermarket Parts for: • Material Handling • Construction • Agricultural Equipment

addition, the jury members drive all nominated vehicles themselves, putting them through their paces during the IFOY Test Days. Among other things, the IFOY Award assesses innovative quality, technology, design, ergonomics, handling, safety, cost effectiveness and sustainability. Nominated in the category of "Warehouse Truck”: Jungheinrich, Still, UniCarriers The jury has nominated three vehicles in the Warehouse Truck category. The first nominee for the final round and therefore also one of the candidates for the IFOY Test is the iGo neo CX 20, the world's first autonomous horizontal order picker from Hamburg-based manufacturer Still. Only 80 cm wide and with a load capacity of 2,000 kg, the machine is equipped with a laser-assisted environment recognition system; it can be integrated in existing material flows or move as part of a platoon irrespective of the local conditions. The vehicle recognizes and interprets the intentions of the operator and the operator's movements. This makes the iGo neo CX 20 the first order picker with cognitive capability. The second nomination in this category goes to Jungheinrich for the world's shortest universal forklift in its class – the Jungheinrich EMD 115i. With its Li-ion case weighing just 17 kilograms, it can be given a 50 percent charge at any 230-V power outlet in as little as 30 minutes, therefore rendering battery changes unnecessary. The electric high-lift stacker has been on the market since August 2016 and features several innovative details such as transparent mast covers. It can handle a wide range of simple stacking jobs up to heights of 1,520 mm as well as short transport distances with loads up to 1,500 kg, making it ideal for use in store outlets or extremely tight warehouse zones while also allowing easy loading onto a truck for transport to other locations. The third forklift nomination is for the brand new EPH 125 DTFV from UniCarriers. The new flagship machine from the Swedish manufacturer only came onto the market two months ago and was developed to perform order-picking tasks outside aisles as well as for high lifting heights in rail or wire-guided aisles. With its powerful 48-Volt AC motor and a load centre of 600, the EPH has a lifting capacity of 1,250 kg and really comes into its own in heavy-duty operations and at extreme heights of up to 12.1 metres. One innovative detail is the fold-back mast, which greatly facilitates delivery of the machine. Nominations for “Special Vehicle” from Crown, kickTrike and Still There are also three nominations by the Jury for the Special Vehicle category. The first nomination is for the WAV 60 from Crown, introduced in May 2016. The multifunctional machine

INDUSTRY NEWS has its place where ladders are normally used – in narrow and highly frequented environments in the retail sector or production zones, for example. The "electric ladder" reaches speeds of up to 8 kmh, can drive and lift simultaneously, and achieves grab heights up to five metres. The second nomination goes to start-up kickTrike for its electric transporter of the same name. The first intralogistics eBike came onto the market in November 2016 and transports everything weighing up to 170 kilograms with the exception of pallets. The kickTrike reaches speeds of 25 kmh, is foldable and permits battery change in the space of 20 seconds. The fun factor is an integral part of the concept, which is designed to ensure intuitive operation and enhanced efficiency. A further nominee is a tugger train with automatic loading and unloading of oversized load carriers measuring up to 1,200 x 2,400 millimetres, a special design developed by Hamburg-based manufacturer Still. On behalf of a gearbox manufacturer in the UK, Still developed a new LiftRunner C-frame with two electrically driven telescopic fork pairs, each with a load capacity of up to 1,000 kg. The automated tugger train replaces two front-loading forklifts. Nominated in the “Automated Guided Vehicle” category: SSI Schäfer and Torwegge Together with cooperation partner Identytec, SSI Schäfer also earns a nomination with its Automated Driverless Delivery (ADD) concept for fully automatic replenishment control using autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs). The ADD system comprises a 2Stack AGV which – in combination with auto ID technology and a software-based eKanban – creates a fully self-contained control loop for big and small load carriers used in production and warehouse logistics. The second nomination was won by Torwegge for its modular TORsten "drive-under" AGV. Only 210 mm high, the AGV uses different platforms to transport all the standard industrial load carriers and individual components with weights of up to seven tons. TORsten navigates autonomously through its operating zone and plans its own routes using a 2D layout of the surrounding space. The most conspicuous feature of TORsten is the omnidirectional drive concept from the SEW Eurodrive stable – which permits not only motion in the narrowest of spaces but also rotation about its own axis. "Special of the Year" finalists: Jungheinrich, Still, UniCarriers The Jury has announced three nominations in this year's "Special of the Year" category. The award recognises a specific component or technical detail. Jungheinrich won its place in the final round with its intelligent system for the easy localisation of trucks within the warehouse. The Jungheinrich indoor truck finder can generate both live and retrospective position-based reports and analysis of all stacker movements. Each truck is equipped with a smartphone that works together with multiple beacons installed

throughout the warehouse to compute the position of the truck and send the corresponding data directly to a server. The vehicle position and a wide range of evaluations based on its position can be viewed instantly and at any time via the Web link-up. Still claims its third nomination this year with its self-cooling PowerPlusLife battery. Conventional lead acid batteries soon "hit the wall" when performing heavy-duty tasks or operating in three-shift mode. It is sometimes not possible to ensure adequate cooling cycles even with one or two replacement batteries. The patented reduction in operating temperature by up to 20 degrees significantly boosts performance and extends battery life by up to two years even in the toughest of operating environments. UniCarriers has been rewarded with a further nomination for its ergonomic alternative to the dead man's feature, the DPS (driver presence sensor). To ensure operator safety, order pickers are fitted with a dead man's device. However, operators subconsciously exert more pressure via the foot that activates the switch, leading to one-sided strain – particularly on-board order-picking stackers with wide working platform. UniCarriers has developed a system in which the dead man's switch is replaced by a floor panel that is equipped with sensors over its full area. The winner in each category will be chosen by a jury made up of 25 internationally reputed trade journalists and the leading logistics media from 16 countries around the globe. The IFOY Award will be presented on the opening evening of the leading logistics fair transport logistic in the BMW Welt, in Munich.
