Mike Marchev
“You can’t be successful at putting if you’re letting fear of missed putts dictate your behavior.” This is a quote borrowed from Dr. Rob Rotella’s book titled Putting Out of Your Mind. Before you tune me out take a minute to see how this advice can help you grow your business. What if your prospects don’t answer your call? What if they don’t open your email? What if they think you are too expensive? What if they already have a supplier they like doing business with? What if they “use” me for information and buy elsewhere? What if they don’t like the features and benefits I outline? What if they can buy the same product at a lower price? You can probably fill in another two hundred “what-if ’s” without having to make anything up. Your industry is full of them. According to Dr. Rotella, a well-known and respected sports psychologist, second-guessing yourself and being frightened that you will miss the putt is called the “yips.” In business, you might consider this as a lack of confidence. In both instances, the question bouncing through your brain should be, “What is my next step after this one works?” Not, “What will happen if they shun my offer?” I have offered the following advice to audiences for nearly 35 years and I am finally internalizing this very same message: “There are only two types of people in the world. Those you can help … and the other kind.” You can’t do much about the second kind, but you can do a lot for the first. Budget your time accordingly and choose wisely.

TVH HEALTH NUDGE
Sleep matters Lucy DelSarto, TVH
Sleep deprivation is now considered a national epidemic by the CDC (Center for Disease Control). Sleep is something most of us are chronically short on and the physical, psychological and emotional ramifications are staggering. As part of TVH’s commitment to helping employees improve quality of life, Health and Wellness Coach Lucy DelSarto facilitated a sleep class to provide insight and information. The Sleep 101 class covered why we sleep, what is REM, how much sleep is needed, what are common challenges related to sleep, what happens as a result of sleep deprivation as well as tips on how to improve sleeping conditions. Approximately one hundred employees participated in the classes offered. Unfortunately, many people wear their exhaustion like a badge of honor. “I only need four or five hours of sleep a night,” replied numerous sleep class participants. The truth is, you cannot continue to deprive your body of its most basic needs: air, water and sleep. The body can function only a few minutes without air

and a few days without water. At four to five days without sleep, expect extreme irritability, hallucinations and delusional episodes. Sleep deprivation results in memory lapse, confusion, brain fog and slowed speech. Studies have shown sleep exhaustion impairs cognitive and motor performance similar to being under the influence of alcohol. The best way to address the sleep deprivation is to make sleep a priority. Create a sleep routine and disconnect from technology an hour before going to bed. Adequate sleep has profound consequences on our health, our job performance, our relationships and our happiness. 10 tips to enhance your sleep: • Stick to a sleep schedule. • Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual. • Be active - exercise, stretch daily. • Turn off electronics one hour prior to bed. • Use essential oils, such as lavender to promote calmness. • Invest in comfortable bedding: sheets, mattress and pillows. • Beware of hidden sleep stealers such as alcohol and caffeine. • Evaluate your bedroom to ensure ideal temperature, sound and light. • Keep a notepad by your bed and brain dump thoughts that are keeping you awake. • Utilize a sleep app on your smartphone or wearable device to track your sleep cycle. Barcoding advises on 2017’s top supply chain trends Barcoding, Inc., provider of supply chain efficiency, accuracy and connectivity, predicts the top supply chain trends to affect the market in 2017. Chase Sowden, head of Supply Chain Architecture by Barcoding, believes traceability, technology adoption and expansion of supply chain footprint are areas to watch. 20-year supply chain veteran, Sowden believes that the following three major industry supply chain trends will make a big impact on applications moving forward: Responsibility of traceability- In 2017 and for the next three to eight years, we will see more companies put an emphasis on traceability, especially as they become more global. They’re being pressured by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other regulatory requirements to know where their product, as well as the items that store their foods, is at any given point in the supply chain. These companies will look for technology to gain more control and visibility as well as security. deeper look at the technology they’re implementing to make sure it is enabling them to be more efficient, have better control, reduce risk and manage cost savings. In order to do this, they need to understand the importance and take advantage of big data. Big data must be pulled from all areas of the supply chain– from the product floor to the end of transport-– to provide a holistic view of their operations to make improvements. Expand supply chain footprint- With an increasing need to get product to customers in a timely manner to be profitable, companies are looking at building new facilities. Companies looking to expand their supply chain footprint have traditionally only focused on the capital needed to build the facilities. To have a higher return on investment (ROI), organizations need to consider outside factors– both geographical and economical. This includes the weather, local military bases, interest rates, regional minimum wages and other employers in the area. These factors can change the way a business operates. For instance: Expanding in the Northeast means that companies must consider the amount of snow and if their product will be able to be transported when required. “2017 will mark the year that more companies will look at becoming proactive, instead of reactive as a way to be more profitable,” said Chase Sowden, supply chain architect, Barcoding, Inc. “Companies must begin and continue to ask themselves, ‘How well are we really doing and what can we do to improve?’ Supply Chain Architecture by Barcoding has the expertise and knowledge to help companies dissect their operations and gain a holistic view so they can make improvements. We ensure their people, processes, and technologies are all working together to help them be more efficient, accurate, and connected.” Supply Chain Architecture by Barcoding uses proven strategies to identify and then eliminate waste in the supply chain in order to increase revenue, decrease operational costs, and improve overall customer experience with efficiency, accuracy, and connectivity. Supply Chain Architecture by Barcoding is ideal for both new and current Barcoding clients in a wide-range of industries and markets. www.barcoding.com

SAFETY CORNER
Real people can get lost in the statistics
Brian Colburn, Forklift Training Systems
In both the material handling world and the safety world, we can get caught up in tons of statistics. When you watch the news on TV, listen to the radio or read an article you see so many stats that you become almost numb to them. This was apparent to me when the Tsunami killed huge amounts of people in Asia years ago. You can hear that hundreds of thousands of people were killed, but it is almost impossible to comprehend the tremendous loss and suffering, unless you were there or had a personal connection. You find yourself listening and then a few seconds later forgetting about it and doing something else. In my forklift safety operator’s class, we tell operators that there are approximately 100 deaths and somewhere between 65,000-96,000 injuries each year in the U.S. I have said it so many times that it almost loses its affect on me, at least until I come in contact with an injured operator or hear a personal story. When I hear the personal and intimate details of what a serious forklift accident does to a family it makes me realize that actual people are behind each and every statistic. People lose income, suffer terrible physical pain, give up activities they once loved, lose the ability to generate income, and in the worst cases, lose a loved one forever. I recently had the chance to converse with a lady via an online forum who had a serious forklift injury to her leg. She just happened to be in a lawsuit with the manufacturer, and even though I did not agree 100% with her position, my heart certainly went out to her for the severity of the injury she received and what she was going through in her personal life. I think it is important to everyone involved in forklift safety to let things get through our outer layer once in a while and feel the pain, so that we don’t become callous to the real effects of what we are trying to prevent. INDUSTRY NEWS
Law enforcement searching for docs related to Cat's Swiss business On March 2, 2017, law enforcement searched Peoria-area Caterpillar facilities seeking any documents related to the company's business in Switzerland. The search warrant allowed law enforcement to search Caterpillar's headquarters building in downtown Peoria, the Morton logistics center and Caterpillar Building AD in East Peoria. The warrant signed by Judge Harold J. Baker out of the Central District of Illinois in Urbana authorize law enforcement to seize any documents related to the movement of Caterpillar products between the U.S. and Switzerland, any documents related to sales outside the U.S., and a variety of documents related to Cat's Swiss subsidiary, CSARL. A Senate hearing in 2014 investigated Caterpillar's alleged shifting of profits on foreign sales to CSARL. Media reports at the time said Caterpillar paid an effective tax rate of 4 to 6 percent on profits in Switzerland, versus 35 percent in the U.S. The Internal Revenue Service launched an investigation into the alleged practices. HOW-TO
Machine perimeter fencing part two: Applications In our recent article (MH Network, pg. 34/February issue) about machine perimeter fencing, we talked about the improvements in workplace safety over the last century and the role that machine perimeter fencing has played in them. We also discussed machine perimeter fencing from an OSHA compliance standpoint, as regulators continue to place greater emphasis on safety. What we didn’t talk about are the potential applications of machine perimeter fencing and exactly how it increases safety and security, while helping businesses comply with safety codes. Machine perimeter applications While we touched briefly on the fact that OSHA requires all machinery to have proper perimeter guarding, it’s important to understand which kinds of applications are subject to these rules and how they apply in different settings. Machine guarding provides an effective way to protect personnel from flying debris, unexpected automated machine movement, process hazards, fast moving parts and other dangers associated with the use of machinery. Because of this, OSHA has mandated the use of machine perimeter guarding in warehouses with exposed machinery. The most comprehensive and general OSHA requirement is standard 1910.212(a) (1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. This standard summarizes the need for machine perimeter fencing, giving examples of machine hazard points and types of guarding that protect against them. Having established the basic requirement for adequate machine fencing, OSHA moves on to more general requirements. Wondering where to place the machine guarding? OSHA addresses this question with standard 1910.212.(a)(2) General requirements for machine guards. Guards shall be affixed to the machine where possible and secured elsewhere if for any reason attachment to the machine is not possible. The guard shall be such that it does not offer an accident hazard in itself. Point of operation guarding Within the realm of general machine guarding is point of operation guarding. Point of operation guarding refers to protection put in place at the point of operation on a given machine. Instead of guarding the entire area around a machine, point of operation guarding protects a specific hazardous point on the machine in order to keep the operator safe. 1910.212(a) (3)(iii) The point of operation of machines whose operation exposes an employee to injury, shall be guarded. The guarding device shall be in conformity with any appropriate standards therefor, or, in the absence of applicable specific standards, shall be so designed and 38

Material Handling Network
www.mhnetwork.com
constructed as to prevent the operator from having any part of his body in the danger zone during the operating cycle. Examples of machines that often require point of operation guarding include: • Shears • Power presses • Power saws • Jointers • Milling machines • Guillotine cutters • Forming rolls and calenders • Portable power tools Guarding for specific machines and industries There are also certain applications that require guarding to be installed in order for them to operate. This is a common method used to enforce warehouse safety, for obvious reasons. Without the safety mechanism in place, the worker can’t accomplish his or her job. When it comes to machine perimeter fencing, the machines required by OSHA to have this feature are revolving drums, barrels, and containers. 1910.212(a)(4) Barrels, containers, and drums. Revolving drums, barrels, and containers shall be guarded by an enclosure which is interlocked with the drive mechanism, so that the barrel, drum, or container cannot revolve unless the guard enclosure is in place. Within the “General Industry” requirements, there are types of machines with unique requirements due to the nature of their operation. Examples of these types of machines include woodworking machinery, cooperage machinery, abrasive wheel machinery, mechanical power presses, and mills and calenders used in the rubber and plastics industries. In addition to general industry applications, several industries have their own specific OSHA machine guarding requirements to follow. Textiles, bakery equipment and telecommunications industries all have their own standards with which to comply. These are on top of those rules designated by the general industry standards. In warehousing and machine operation, it’s almost always a good idea to err on the side of safety. There are an endless number of applications in which machine guarding can and should be used. This can leave some room for interpretation on the part of the warehouse manager. However, the takeaway from OSHA’s standards seems to be that if a machine could possibly injure someone, it should have machine guarding around or on it. Remember to give us a call or email us to learn more about machine perimeter fencing and other safety products. Our goal is to help you, so let us know if there’s information you’d like to see featured in our blog, website, or emails! West Point Rack celebrates 12 years With quotes provided in one or two hours and delivery within two to three weeks, West Point Rack lives up to its slogan, “We don’t just promise...We deliver!” Established over 10 years ago, West Point Rack is a fast-growing company with a competitive price and a very service oriented management team. “Pricing is always an issue and we offer very competitive prices. However, service and standing behind your product once it is delivered is critical to building lasting relationships with dealers. If product issues do arise, we address those issues immediately with the goal of creating satisfaction for both our dealer and their customer,” said Terry Sroka, chief executive officer. West Point Rack only offers its products to distributors and is a member of MHEDA (Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association). “We don’t sell to end users,” said Reva Billy, president of West Point Rack. “If we get a call from an end-user, we refer them to a dealer. In addition, our trade policies are geared to the needs of our dealers. West Point Rack handles freight on a prepay-and-add basis plus we sell on open accounts with terms of 1%/10, net 30 to accounts with approved credit” said Sroka. The Nebraska-based company provides a variety of racks to meet customer needs including: • Cantilever racks in light, intermediate, heavy and extra heavy-duty configurations. • Structural pallet racks that are sturdy enough to handle any kind of abuse from forklifts or extreme environments. Racks are available as galvanized or painted steel to minimize rusting and can be configured to meet almost any need a customer may have. • Portable stacking racks can be made to order. Any size for your specific needs can be fulfilled. • Specialty products made by West Point Rack include bar cradle trucks, drum racks and handcarts. In addition, West Point Rack has recently added new products to their line of racks. Included is a new line of reel racks, ranging in height from eight to 12 feet. Reel racks come with a gray paint finish, but other colors are available upon request. Vertical racks, which will hold material from 21 inches to 12 feet, features six-inch deep arms with three shelves made of 14-guage steel. U-racks, with an orange paint finish, can be stacked up to four units high to save space. Customers can see specifications and photos of any rack they may be interested in purchasing by visiting www.westpointrack.com. And if you don’t see what you are looking for, call 866/245-3630. West Point Rack may be able to fill your need. “I always look for things when we do specials,” Sroka said. “Does it have any potential of becoming a standard product? That is how we developed a lot of our standard products.” West Point Rack’s motto is the reason they will continue to be one of the fastest growing companies in the industry. “I don’t want to be one of the biggest rack companies out there, just one of the better ones,” Sroka said. “Our primary goal is to support our dealers, satisfy their customers, earn trust and be the ‘Vendor of Choice’ for rack products and racking systems.” www.westpointrack.com

INDUSTRY NEWS
Valley Craft appoints new director, sales and marketing Stärke Material Handling Group, in cooperation with its independent dealership network, began giving back to communities throughout North America with a new charitable initiative known as Stärke Kids and Communities. The initiative aims to provide support and resources to those in greatest need of assistance including vulnerable groups, such as underprivileged children and families, by contributing a portion of its proceeds from equipment sales to support the charitable contributions of its dealership network. Among the first dealers to join the initiative was Lucas Liftruck Service Ltd., a local Stärke dealership based out of
the Niagara Region in Southern Ontario, Canada. In cooperation with Stärke, Lucas raised an excess of $6,000 to donate to local charities, with most of the funds coming from employee payroll deductions, company donations from equipment sales and fundraising efforts for local charity events. The primary beneficiary of Lucas’s fundraising has been a local charity in the Niagara Region by the name of Start Me Up Niagara, which works to combat poverty and homeless that result from disabilities, poor health and isolation. Specifically, Lucas Liftruck’s recently fundraised over $3,700 for the Coldest Night of the Year Walk in an effort to support the homeless in the Niagara Region, Ontario. Other donations were made to Education Foundation of Niagara, a charitable organization which provides support and assistance to DSBN students wherever government funding in unavailable or insufficient. Areas of support include providing financial assistance and developing progressive educational programs and services. www.starkeforklift.com www.valleycraft.com
