Mike Marchev “Stop Your Sales Pitch; Start Your Conversation.” This quote was taken from Top Dog Sales Secrets by Michael Dalton Johnson, page 116. At my age and experience, I think I am entitled to having a few pet peeves. Entitled or not, I have a few. Like it or not, you are about to hear them. In addition to the regulars: saying “thank you” instead of “no problem,” and actually looking at the people you are speaking to, there are four business terms that make me cringe. This is not to say that those guilty of using these words are bad people or misinformed. These words just don’t have a place in my vocabulary. These words are close, as in “trying to close a sale.” Up-sell, as in “you buy this and I will immediately sell you something with a higher commission.” And overcoming objections. Who in their right mind looks forward to having their “objections overcome?” Certainly not me, and hopefully not you. But there is a fourth word that conjures up thoughts of carnival-ism, slight-of-hand and insincerity. That is the word “pitch.” Online Etymology offers this definition: pitch - “Something that is pitched,” Meaning “act of throwing.” Meaning “act of plunging headfirst.” Sales pitch in the modern commercial advertising sense is from 1943, American English, perhaps from the baseball sense. I interpret the connotation as “I’ll toss a few ideas your way and you see if you can connect with a few.” i.e. the baseball analogy. I’ll keep throwing and you keep swinging. Something is bound to happen sooner or later. I don’t want to be known as a pitcher. I want to be known as a sincere person who is serving up ideas you can understand, afford, use and benefit from. I want to present ideas you can hit for homeruns more often than not. This is as far as I will go today on the topic of word choice, except for a reference to a very good short video clip below. Let it suffice to say that the words you choose can make a huge difference when it comes to establishing meaning and reciprocating relationships. I choose not to use no problem, up-sell, close, overcome and pitch. What you choose to use to advance your career is entirely up to you. I know I have referenced the following YouTube video in previous articles, but when it comes to choosing words to get your message delivered clearly, there is no better short clip than the following. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uquRRrJh-L0 Mike Marchev, president of Head First Sales, is a featured Sales Motivational Speaker at franchise, association, and corporate meetings around the world. His column appears regularly in industry magazines and E-zines and he is the author of four books, the most popular being Become the Exception. TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Heads up on forward head posture Lucy DelSarto, TVH Today, people are inclined to spend countless hours tied to the modern conveniences of a computer, TV or cellphone. The increased pressure on the neck muscles caused by repeated forward and/or downward facing postures has substantially negative effects on the body and can cause Forward Head Posture (FHP). According to Dr. Adalbert I. Kapandji, author of The Physiology of the Joints, for every inch that your head protrudes from its normal position, you add 10 additional pounds of force upon your neck. Often referred to as “text neck,” FHP is a musculoskeletal condition where your cervical spine, or head and neck area, have protracted forward away from your body's line of gravity according to Spine Health. The hunched over appearance caused by spending hours looking down at your phone or computer can lead to chronic pain, numbness in the arms and hands, improper breathing and even pinched nerves. Other health risks associated with FHP include: • High blood pressure • Headaches due to muscle tension • Balance problems

• Vision issues due to eye strain • Poor digestion • Reduced lung capacity Awareness is the first step in correcting the problem. Making simple changes to the way you stand and sit can make your posture better and eliminate FHP. Position your head in a neutral position where your ears aligned directly over your shoulders. When working on the computer, reading or texting have items at your eye level to avoid leaning forward and looking down. Reduce long periods of sitting and take regular stretching breaks with specific exercises to reduce tension and other symptoms of poor neck posture. There are also exercises that can help correct FHP and improve the postural muscles of the neck to relieve pain and other health issues. Relearning correct posture will take time, but the result can change your life. If you would like to know more about TVH and the Health Nudge wellness programs, contact Lucy DelSarto, Health & Wellness Coach for TVH Americas, at lucy.delsarto@tvh.com.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Rapid Response Solutions becomes full LEEA member Portsmouth, UKbased lifting, transport and storage specialist Rapid Response Solutions (RRS) has passed its final audit and been named a full member of the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA), established across the globe as a representative body for all those involved in the lifting industry worldwide. RRS started its journey with LEEA as a development member following an initial audit two years ago and wasted no time in meeting the stringent criteria for full membership, which is only available to companies that are ‘engaged for profit in the verification of lifting equipment, and which, in the opinion of the [LEEA] directors, is competent and can give an adequate service.’

These photos are representative samples of various custom design solutions that we have developed for our customers. Nutting has provided products for safer and more effiecient material handling to companies in most major market segments. If you would like more information please visit our website at www.acconutting.com or contact us at 1-800-533-0337, for a more detailed custom brochure.

Paul Barber, managing director at RRS, said: “After the first audit they set us a training matrix to help develop our staff. We then had to select a certain number of skilled staff in each discipline to take LEEA training courses. We’re proud to have marked successful completion of this rigorous audit process and welcome the association’s [annual] follow-up audits to ensure we continue to meet and exceed these high standards.” Seven RRS employees have taken LEEA training courses in a variety of subject matter over the period. Barber lauded the association’s comprehensive programs that cover manufacture, assembly, and testing through to examination and certification of lifting equipment. Health, safety and legal requirements are also included, he pointed out. Advanced programs were recently accredited by City & Guilds, which is backed by a Royal Charter and has a long history of shaping skilled workforces. Barber said: “They aren’t just a ‘turn up and pass’ type of course. A lot of work goes into getting the qualifications. The feedback from all our guys that have taken courses was very positive; the facilities, course structure and presentation materials are first-class. The process to gain membership has thusly been hugely rewarding but the exciting part is we can now begin to leverage the benefits of illustrious full member status.” He added: “Being a member of LEEA gives us access to a wealth of lifting know-how, backed by technical ability from members with varying skills across the world. Eventually, I would like to be involved with the technical committees and at some point join the board. I have worked in this industry for almost 30 years now and have a lot of experience to share.” Over 60% of UK-headquartered LEEA’s global membership is now outside of the home nations. A major focus of the LEEA team in recent months has been the promotion of the association and its members to end user customers. LEEA’s endeavors to this end and its increasing presence at industry events across the world further align with strategy at RRS. Barber explained: “We carry out projects globally so having an internationally recognized accreditation is a benefit. If international clients have projects in the UK it also helps them recognize companies who are suitably qualified. LEEA has the task of unifying legislation between countries and bringing all countries into line from a health and safety standpoint, which is something that interests me greatly. Put simply, if each country worked to the same regulations the industry would become a safer place to work.” RRS offers a range of products and services, many of which are not lifting-centric, yet Barber said LEEA membership will be noted across the board as it demonstrates the company’s commitment to training its staff to the highest level and exposes working practices to audit by industry leaders. “Additionally,” he added, “we are unique as such a multifaceted business in gaining LEEA membership, which elevates our status above competing solution providers.” LEEA also organizes an annual trade show, LiftEx, where RRS, as it did in 2016, will raise its profile as the only international sales partner of the Canadian manufacturer of hydraulic skidding systems, Hydra-Slide, this November. A range of turntables and climbing jacks will be presented to the Telford audience. www.rapidrs.co.uk

Brian Colburn, Forklift Training Systems I have been looking at some of the online forums regarding training and thought it might be worthwhile to tackle the issue of mandatory training hours for forklift operator certification. First, as a U.S. based trainer, I have not dealt with any standards that require a specific number of hours to certify an operator, such as I hear are used in other countries. Mandatory hours are both good and bad in my opinion. The positive side of a mandatory number of training hours is that you can at least ensure they have a certain number of hours under their belt before they are qualified to operate on their own. The downside is that it does not allow for the flexibility to fast track people that are more advanced, or to deal with folks that are slower learners. In a similar situation, a young adult in the U.S. must have so many hours of training before operating a car alone, this gives them a base of training, but it is based on the average teenager and thus is not a perfect solution for each unique young person. I can see where some trainers might have a problem with a required number of hours since it cuts down on their flexibility. However, I would ask them, “Is it better to have no required hours at all?” It scares me that some operators in the U.S. get very little or no practice operation before they are certified to operate. On the other hand, if I had to spend weeks with each operator, that might not be ideal either, especially for more advanced people. One solution might be to keep the mandatory hours fairly low and then allow more or less time depending on what the trainer sees of the student during those initial hours. Some operators might progress immediately into the final evaluation stage after the required hours, and others might enter remedial training, if they were still not up to par. Quantity does not always produce quality, nor does quality, with very little quantity, work well either. There has to be a mix of both to achieve the desired results. Nothing can take the place of a well trained and seasoned trainer’s opinion of the operator in the actual workplace, but certain guidelines can assist in getting operators well prepared to succeed in the workplace. Written by Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems, a leading provider of forklift safety training and materials. Dematic announces organizational enhancements with integration of Retrotech Following the acquisition by the KION Group on 1 November 2016, Dematic, supplier of integrated automated technology, software and services to optimize the supply chain, announced today the plans for integrating Retrotech, Inc. into its organization. Retrotech, with a 30-year legacy of providing expert modernizations and new automated systems in North America, will become a division of the Dematic North America Customer Service organization. Retrotech had been acquired by the KION Group in March, 2016. The integration, which is targeted for completion in 2017, will greatly enhance Dematic's breadth of aftermarket lifecycle offerings as well as bring incremental solutions and top talent to Dematic's new systems business. Moving forward, the division will be known as Dematic Retrotech and will remain headquartered in Rochester, NY. The company will continue to bring their consultative approach to both existing and prospective users of automation and software. Mike Kotecki, Dematic Senior Vice President, Customer Service, stated, "This mutual integration brings a large body of experience and resources to the fast-growing Dematic organization while fueling Retrotech's growth with Dematic's broad portfolio of products, R&D and global reach." Paul Deveikis, Retrotech Managing Director, commented, "The process underway will clearly retain and enhance our long-standing reputation of objectivity and customer advocacy. The unified organization will be second to none in our ability to improve the value of installed supply chain technology." www.dematic.com

Hänel Storage Systems, manufacturer of automated vertical storage units, has donated an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) to Western Guilford High School in Greensboro, NC. The Rotomat® vertical carousel will be used to store school materials and provide live demonstrations for the school’s Logistics Education Department. Hänel offered two Rotomats® to the Material Handling Institute (MHI), and Western Guilford was one of several schools to apply for the donation. The second had been donated to Vincennes University in Plainfield, IN earlier this year. The Western Guilford logistics program is aimed at teaching high school students about warehousing and supply chain management. The Rotomat® is an advanced storage and retrieval system where the students will learn how to store and pick inventory. “The Hänel Rotomat® is now one of our most prized possessions. Our students learn in a warehouse lab that also includes a Predator stretch wrap machine, Big Joe V-15 electric forklift, a SimLog forklift simulator, pallet jack, 144 feet of beam width racking and an assortment of platform truck, hand truck and warehouse tools,” said Art Close, Western Guilford Logistics Education Director. “We appreciate the gift Hänel has given us, and will use it to improve the education and skills of our students.” The Rotomat® currently stores office supplies for teachers, and the logistics classes run what is known as the Teacher Store. The Logistics Education Department is currently in its fourth year, and 60 students are enrolled in the program, including Advanced Placement. “AP students in programs like this are rare across America, but our program is attracting them thanks to equipment like Hänel’s,” said Close. Even though the program is relatively new, some Western Guilford have already gone on to work in logistics for companies like Home Depot. Western Guilford High School opened in 1968, and currently educates 1300 students in Grades 9 to 12. It is part of the Guilford County Schools system, which is the third largest district in North Carolina. Western Guilford has the first high school logistics program in the state, and is the lead school system in the consortium that have such programs, so the school is primarily responsible for developing courses and content. www.hanel.us www.mhnetwork.com

HOW-TO

Unleashing beastwire mesh guarding in Pennsylvania Wire Mesh Guarding At WPRP, our goal is to help you by providing educational content and pallet rack products. But pallet rack isn’t all that we carry. A more accurate way of describing what we sell is solutions to warehouse storage problems. Pallet racking may be the foundation, but sometimes racking on its own doesn’t meet the full spectrum of a customer’s needs. That’s why we offer a full line of pallet rack accessories that help businesses make their warehouses safer and more productive. Often times a product that only came about as an afterthought or an add-on item on a quote can make the difference between a so-so warehouse and one that’s safe, efficient, and code compliant. That’s why we’re so excited to announce a new member of the WPRP 48 hour quick ship product family: BeastWire Mesh Guarding. Wire mesh guarding has a lot of benefits for pallet rack systems. One of the most obvious of these benefits is the additional safety. As engineering technology and strategies advance, pallet rack systems gradually get taller and taller. The higher up a load is on a rack system, the more damage it can cause when it lands. On top of that, the product itself is more likely to sustain damage on impact. A rack safety system like BeastWire helps ensure that no product leaves the racking unless the warehouse staff picks it.

RED-ZONE DANGER AREA WARNING LIGHT

Why beastwire mesh guarding? BeastWire has advantages over both safety netting and other types of steel mesh. One of these qualities is the raw strength of the product itself. Safety netting, which is commonly used on the back side of a rack system, is only made to stop small items. This means that with rack systems supporting large loads, it is only marginally effective. Over time, safety netting can also fall prey to fraying and cutting by loads with sharp edges, whereas steel mesh can withstand abuse from sharp, heavy product. The fully framed design utilized by BeastWire has been shown by independent studies to be twice as strong as unframed panels. Aside from the quality and strength of its materials, one of the features that sets BeastWire apart is the innovative bracket design. BeastWire’s riveted bracket can save up to 90% on installation, and secures the rack system with a safety drop pin. The drop pin would be easy to overlook, but is a key safety feature. With the drop pin in place, the panel cannot be dislodged from the upright unless the safety pin is deliberately removed first. This eliminates the possibility of a panel accidentally disengaging and harming people or product. To meet the needs of a wide variety of applications and pallet rack styles, BeastWire has four different bracket design options: fixed, adjustable, universal, and pivot. Each of these bracket designs lets the mesh panels function at their best for that particular system. Pallet rack wire backing No matter the size of your bay, BeastWire rack safety panels can cover your needs. Panels can stack to cover the needed vertical coverage, and a single panel can span a width of 10’. For bays wider than 10’, simply join two BeastWire panels together using the 4” splice channel. Wire mesh guarding applications So, how do you know when it’s a good time to use BeastWire mesh guarding on a pallet rack system? Any time wire mesh guarding can increase the safety of a warehouse is a good time to install BeastWire rack backing panels.

The Red-Zone Danger Area Warning Lights put a bright red line on the floor to keep pedestrians a safe distance away from mobile equipment. They are commonly used on the sides, but can also be installed on the rear or even on all four sides to create a complete NO GO AREA. Here are a few examples of common applications for BeastWire mesh guarding: • When storing unbalanced loads that exceed 25 lbs. or objects with sharp edges • On racking located next to pedestrian traffic lanes • On any racking tunnels that sit above aisles with personnel traffic • When a row of racking sits directly next to a wall, column, pipes or machinery • In a flue space where items would become trapped if they were to fall Want to know more about the latest addition to our quick ship product offering? CREAMER'S CORNER

Let’s filter through the answers! Recently, I was contacted by a long term customer with a fleet of Tennant Sweepers. Among these models he has many Model 355 sweepers, 385 sweepers and 6500. He does sweeping services for a large variety of businesses and is very familiar with his equipment. So, I was surprised when he e-mailed with a couple of questions. First, just out of the blue, he said that he purchased a used Tennant from a business in order to acquire their sweeping business. He stated that it was an older Tennant but in very good condition. I ask what model machine. He said it was a Tennant Model 365 with only 430 hours on the hour meter. I said wow, that’s low. He said can you tell me about this machine? Of course, I am very familiar with this machine. I thought they were pretty good machines, but were more cheaply made then the typical Tennant. I rebuilt many of these Tennants in the day. First of all, its heyday was between 1988 and 1993. It had the Ford KSG416 and was one of the first engines that was distributorless. This engine produced 47.5 HP @ 3600 RPM. It was equipped with gas or LP. There were no diesel engines used in this model as far as I am aware. I would be interested in finding out if anyone out there has seen this with a diesel. The model 365 were all made with the high dump feature as standard equipment hence, giving it the popularity. Many used this indoors but just as many used this sweeper as an outdoor sweeper. It had the power and the speed needed and with its high dump made it ideal. Another advantage was the sweeping path of 48” and with a side broom it became a total of 60” (5 foot). Another nice feature was the small left turning radius of 77 inches. For that time this is a very small area for the size of the machine to turn. But what I believe made it popular was the hopper capacity. The hopper had a capacity of 16 cu. ft. at 1,200 pounds (over a half a ton of debris). Even though it is almost 30 years old, it can be a nice back up machine in a fleet of sweepers. So, this is the sweeper. Let’s move on to his question regarding the hopper filter also known as the panel filter. He stated that he is having trouble with them actually falling apart. I asked him to explain please. Apparently, some of my sweeper operators are sweeping when it rains and I don’t think that should be. You are correct in regards to wet-sweeping. Tennant sweepers are not meant to wet-sweep. However, I will go into more detail on this subject. Sweeping is always meant to be done in the dry weather, not when it is raining. First of all the hopper is made of steel. When you sweep dirt, dust and debris into this hopper and mix it with water, it becomes a muddy mess. So when the operator is finished with sweeping the hopper must be emptied. After that, the hopper should be hosed out and allowed to dry. Unless this is done, over a very little time, the hopper starts to rust. Something else occurs that few are aware. Dampness is drawn up through the hopper filter by the vacuum motor where mold, mildew and rot starts to eat away at the filter. Now understand this is happening because the filter is made out of paper. A little known fact is that these filters are also made out of a synthetic material that resists mold and mildew. So I explain this to my customer which I was surprised he hadn’t heard of before. Yes, I said, just use synthetic filters and you should be good to go. It is a pity that not all sweepers have synthetic filters available for them. For those interested in this, you can e-mail me your brand and model. As always, thank you for reading. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber. Sunbelt Industrial Trucks announces sale of Houston operations Sunbelt Industrial Trucks of Dallas, TX announces the sale of its Houston operations to Miner Material Handling. The sale was closed on the 23rd of March. Miner acquired Dallas based CEDFW Warehouse Solutions in April 2016. CE-DFW is an authorized Doosan, Linde, Donkey and Genie dealer in North Texas. They were interested in expanding to Houston, so the acquisition of Sunbelt Industrial Trucks, the Doosan dealer in that market, was beneficial to both parties. Sunbelt is a subsidiary of SBNA Holdings, Inc. Approximately 5 years ago, one third of the stock was sold to employees and management team. The remaining shares, owned by Bill Rowan and Warren Cornil, the founders, will be sold to the ESOP and managing partners later this year. Miner's acquisition of Sunbelt's Houston operation will allow Sunbelt to focus concentration on the Dallas market. Miner Material Handling now has operations in Dallas, Houston and Phoenix. Sunbelt wishes Miner continued success in Houston, and is confident that its former employees and customers are in good hands. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
