Quickly improve forklift safety, productivity and drivercertification compliance from automotive and manufacturing to energy and health care — needed to improve safety and efficiency, it turned to a telematics platform.

The company has operations in more than 65 countries and operates 74 manufacturing facilities across the U.S. It already used TotalTrax’s cloud-based solution in five of its distribution centers to monitor speed, collisions, braking, driver licensure and various safety metrics for its forklifts.

The company found the platform to successfully minimize risk and optimize productivity at these five facilities.

But, two additional facilities lacked vendor-supported fleet-management technology. It was time to expand this level of control.

Your gift of blood may help up to three people; however, donated red blood cells have a limited shelf-life of up to 42 days.

Everyday blood is needed in hospitals for surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma and accidents. The American Red Cross estimates approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the United States. An average of three pints is needed per blood transfusion.

The number one reason donors say they give blood is because they “want to help others.” The convenience of a mobile blood drive increases the number of donors.

Up to 80% of the American Red Cross blood donations come from blood drives set up at companies, community organizations, schools, places of worship or military installations.

TVH provides three annual on-site blood drives.

After our spring drive, employee Christina Scarbrough commented: “It feels so good to work for a company that recognizes doing good in the world. Thank you and TVH for hosting such an amazing opportunity for us!”

Lack of information or fear are the two most common reasons cited by people who don’t give blood. Comments such as, “I don’t like needles” and “Never thought about it” can be addressed at on-site drives by Red Cross employees, fellow co-workers or company Wellness Ambassadors. A blood drive provides the opportunity to invite, educate and empower on donating blood. Often first time donors join in because of the convenience and support of co-workers.

TVH Canada is a National Service Dog sponsor TVH in the Americas (TVH), is sponsoring two male puppies in training at the National Service Dogs (NSD) organization in Ontario, Canada. This TVHCares initiative takes care of each puppy’s veterinary, training and care expenses for the first year.

TVHCares is TVH’s charity program that encourages employees to get involved and make an impact in their communities. NSD is a great organization that TVHCares supports because they have pioneered the program of breeding, training and placing Labrador and Golden Retrievers to assist children and families living with autism. The dogs are trained to increase safety levels and improve the bolting behaviors common in children with autism. Swift Industrial Power announces new team member Swift Industrial Power has announced the addition of Chad Bevis to the team in its Birmingham and north Alabama regions.

Bevis has been hired as a customer service representative for the region, and will work closely with customers to make certain they are provided optimal solutions to meet their everyday power needs. According to Chris Jourdan, Swift Industrial Power General Manager, the addition of Bevis has solidified the Birmingham branch’s commitment to its customers.

“Chad is a great addition to our team in Birmingham, and his experience in customer service and industrial power applications make him a valuable part of Swift’s continued advancement in the region,” says Jourdan.

According to Jourdan, Bevis will be handling the promotion of battery and charger services, accessories and service contracts, as well as data collection and analysis for Swift Industrial Power’s monitored material handling power fleets.

Pedestrian Safety Brian Colburn, Forklift Training Systems

Companies across the world spend many millions of dollars to train their forklift operators, but how many train the people that work around forklifts? Only a small number of companies do any pedestrian training and the majority of those do it as part of the facility orientation or as a generic two-minute video, neither of which is very effective. Pedestrians are involved in up to 40% of all forklift accidents and many end up being very serious or even fatal. One Central Ohio case involved a forklift running into a person and killing them. What can be done?

1) Teach your forklift operators to look out for and yield to the pedestrians. Let them know that their actions and decisions could impact or end the lives of others and that they are a key piece in preventing forklift accidents. Focused, vigilant forklift operators, who are committed to safe operation, save lives.

2) Teach your (non-operator) pedestrians to look for and actively avoid interaction with forklifts, they may have the right of way, but could end up being “dead right.” You don’t have to look any further than YouTube to find handfuls of forklift accident videos that will assist you in making your point.

Want to make it site specific, mount a GO PRO in back of the operator to show pedestrians how they look to the operator, leave it for a day and catch live action in your plant, be prepared to be scared when you look at the footage. You may be surprised how closely forklifts and people interact every day at your site.

3) Ask for safety suggestions to improve safety from both operators and pedestrians. Whether it is putting up a barrier, a mirror or redirecting traffic flow, it is easier and far less costly to do this BEFORE the accident. We have some good examples of forklift and pedestrian safety products on our web site.

4) Enforce your rules. Rules that are not enforced are called suggestions. Be sure forklift operators and pedestrians are following your rules for safe operation. If they are not you need to take action to change their behaviors quickly.

MHI selects ITC Manufacturing COO as the Face of the Supply Chain International Technical Coatings (ITC) announced its Chief Operating Officer (COO), AriAnne Sproat, has been selected by MHI as the recipient of the 2017 Face of the Supply Chain award at last night’s MHI Industry Night at ProMat 2017. Sproat’s inspiring story was shared through the #iWorkInTheSupplyChain campaign among 16 other supply chain professionals, where judges were “wowed” by her story and recognized Sproat as a role model for the next generation of workers in the supply chain.

Toyota partners with Shoppa's for e-commerce website Toyota Industries Commercial Finance, Inc. (TICF), a subsidiary of Toyota Industries Global Commercial Finance, Inc. based in Dallas, Texas, has partnered with the local DFW Toyota Forklift dealer, Shoppa’s Material Handling, to create a National Off Lease Equipment Center e-commerce website for the sale, lease or rental of pre-owned late-model used material handling equipment.

The new e-commerce website will allow end-user customers to purchase, lease or rent recent off lease used forklifts online, much like trends seen in the automotive and heavy equipment industries. The transaction request will take place online and units will be delivered to the customer’s location.

“Toyota forklifts are known for the highest level of performance, productivity, operator safety and lowest cost of ownership. We are excited to offer the public the opportunity to purchase these off lease high-quality used forklifts through the e-commerce website,” stated Norm Creveling, President of Toyota Industries Commercial Finance, Inc. A lesson in maintenance!

When I talk about the Tennant Model 355 sweeper, good thoughts enter my mind about the dependability and the longevity of this machine. Production began in 1992 and it was immediately a success in the world of cleaning. It succeeded the models 265, 275, 275II and 285. These were very good machines in their own right, but the 355 became a culmination of all that was good in those past sweepers.

It was a wise use of the up-to-date technologies at the time and a machine quality that couldn’t compare. Here we are in 2017 and still I see the Tennant 355 used in factories on a daily basis. One item that made it desirable was that it was produced only in a Hi-Dump version, which means that the hopper could be dumped into a dumpster. At the time other manufacturers were still producing sweeping in a Low-Dump version. And, to upscale into a Hi-Dump was a higher cost, hence the popularity of the 355. As far as the longevity, the 355 was produced until 1999, when in June of that year the new Model 6500 rolled out. Among the other advantages were: 1) The sweeping path with the side brush was 60”, perfect for warehouses 2) The hopper capacity of 14 cubic feet and 1200 pounds of debris.

3) It was available in gas, propane and diesel. If you wanted something more environmentally friendly, well then, electric was available.

So when I received an e-mail that we have a customer that is stating that he has a Tennant 355 and using words such as “ junk” and “always broke-down,” I am concerned that something is definitely wrong. It just doesn’t sound right.

When I requested a list of problems he was having he obliged. Wow I thought, this guy got a lot problems. He stated them and sent some pictures too!

1) The main broom just stopped turning.

2) The sweeper wasn’t sweeping very well at all and leaving a lot of debris on the floor.

3) It started making a funny noise it hadn’t before.

4) It wasn’t running very good as well.

So let’s look at the main broom problem first, I told him to open the main broom chamber access door and take some pictures. He did so and set them to me. What I saw was astounding. Apparently you have a banding problem there, because the problem has to be that the metal banding that it used in packaging has become bound within the broom. I also told him to check the other side where the hydraulic motor turns the broom. I asked if it is wrapped around that area as well. And he said that it was. Well, I stated, you must remove all of the banding in this area. I would also replace the main broom because I would suspect it is damaged as well. And as I was shown, it was very much damaged as the bristles were also falling out.

I suspect that just by replacing the main broom and removing the banding, you will have a broom that finally will sweep. I also suspect that the funny noise will go away because that was the hydraulics trying to turn your broom.

Let’s get to your second problem of not sweeping very well.

There are many reasons sweepers don’t sweep. Some of the most obvious are that the sweeper hopper needs to be emptied.

Have you ever had a vacuum sweeper that wouldn’t sweep your carpet and upon further inspection the bags needs emptied?

Same thing here, just a larger machine. You have to empty your hopper! Other reasons of the insufficient sweeping would be the brush chamber flaps are torn, the hopper filter is full, or the vacuum motor is not properly working.

Moving on to the last issue of the engine not running properly: it probably needs attention as replacing spark plugs and such. If you haven’t performed any maintenance on this machine, you need to.

He stated “this thing is going to be a money pit.” I told him, this is what has to be done and should be a “lesson in maintenance.”

A well maintained machine is one that will always perform as it should. This should be a lesson for all equipment.

KION North America Corporation honors top dealers KION North America Corporation awarded their top dealers based on 2016 performance at an exclusive, private event held at Harry Caray's in Chicago on Apr. 5.

The top honor, the President's Award, was awarded to Ameco Services S. De R. L. De C. V. for achieving the highest total combined sales for lift trucks and parts.

The Palmetto Award was awarded to KION North America dealers who met or exceeded their annual market plan goals.

Those dealers are as follows: Black Equipment Co., Bohnert Equipment, Equipment Depot of Texas, Forklifts of Toledo, Granite Industrial Machinery, Homestead Materials Handling, Hurricane Industrial Equipment, Industrial Parts Warehouse Lift Techs, J.M. Equipment Company, Kaweah Lift, Larry T. Weiss Company, LPM Forklift Sales and Service, Manutention Quebec, Inc., Material Handling, Inc., Morrison Industrial Equipment, Mullen Industrial Handling Corp., On-Site Services, Reliable Forklift, Springer Equipment, United Industrial Services and Wise Forklift.

The Class Act Award was given to dealers who purchased trucks in each of the five classes. Class Act Award recipients are as follows: Bohnert Equipment, Equipment Depot of Ohio, Hansler Industries, Hodge Material Handling, Manutention Quebec, Inc. and Wisconsin Lift Truck.

The following dealers joined the 100 Club for ordering over 100 trucks in 2016: Ameco Services S. De R. L. De C. V. , Homestead Materials Handling, Manutention Quebec, Inc., RI-GO Lift Truck and Wisconsin Lift Truck. For ordering just below that 100 truck mark, Bennett Material Handling was awarded the "Merit Award."

Ameco Services S. De R. L. De C. V. and Select Equipment Sales were recognized as being the top two dealers who ordered the most hydrostat trucks. Manutention Quebec, Inc. and Wisconsin Lift Truck were recognized as being the top two dealers who ordered the most electric trucks.

KION North America also awarded the Sales Excellence Award to the dealers who had top sales/order intake in their perspective region of North America. The Sales Excellence Award for Canada was awarded to Manutention Quebec, Inc. In the United States, Wisconsin Lift Truck received the Sales Excellence Award and Ameco Services S. De R. L. De C.V. took home the award for top sales in Mexico/Caribbean.

Kaweah Lift received the Baoli Dealer of the Year Award for selling the most Baoli brand trucks.

At their dealer meeting prior to the event, dealers who do not carry other OEM product lines were presented with KION North America blazers in recognition of their dedication and commitment to the company's mission.
