FEATURE ARTICLE

The Importance of choosing the correct forklift attachment than just lift and move heavy objects. Many different forklift attachments are available to help provide safer handling, reduce product damage and increase efficiency and productivity in the workplace. Established for over 35 years, B&B Attachments Ltd is the leading fork lift truck attachment company in the UK and Ireland. B&B pride itself on providing the most comprehensive range of attachments available for all industries. B&B also design and manufacture bespoke, specialist attachments in-house for customers with unique requirements. Mike Barton, Managing Director at B&B Attachments comments “Attachments can be a huge benefit to any business that has the requirement to move, lift, layer pick, split loads or turn its products in a certain way. Not only do attachments improve safety but they also increase productivity by eliminating wasted time, space and man power during the material handling process.

Picking up a load may seem like a simple manoeuvre, yet if not done properly, damage to the goods or worse still personal injury can occur. If your company has a requirement to deal with heavy items, taking shortcuts could expose you to a large amount of risk. In extreme cases a badly executed lift using incorrect tools and poor planning can result in a major incident. A recent incident reported by the Fork Lift Truck Association of a lift that was inadequately managed, cost one concrete solutions company $350,000+ in fines, over $12,750 in costs and more alarmingly injury to a member of personnel. This was due to a poorly planned unloading operation using a forklift truck. The incident occurred whilst a worker was removing wooden struts that concrete blocks had been resting on, slipped off the forks and fell onto the worker. This resulted in serious crush injuries to one of his legs, which eventually had to be amputated from the shin down. Many businesses require at least one forklift on their premises to address loading and handling duties. However, some companies overlook the importance of selecting the correct forklift attachment, or a collection of attachments, which is paramount when you require a forklift to do more 8

TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Creating a Healthy Workplace Lucy DelSarto, TVH

Embracing wellness as part of the company culture and encouraging a healthy lifestyle can have a positive impact on employees as well as employers. Investing in programs to better the minds and bodies will lower health care costs, reduce absenteeism and achieve higher employee productivity. A comprehensive wellness program can be a major selling point for companies trying to attract and retain the best and brightest talent. Over 70% of employees stated in a recent CareerBuilder survey that “benefit package offerings are extremely or very important to their job satisfaction.” At TVH, our Nudge wellness program is rated by employee who participated in a survey as one of the best reasons to work for the company. Centered around the mantra “Daily Choices Matter”, the program features walking challenges, onsite fitness classes, wellness classes, health screenings, CPR classes, and more. The fundamentals of a successful program include engaging, empowering and encouraging employees to make better daily choices. Begin by focusing on a few simple steps and continue to add to the program. • Get support and involvement from all levels of the organization. TVH executives are constantly involved which further models healthy behaviors in the workplace. • Find wellness ambassadors within your company and work with them to recruit new participants and share ideas. 10

July 2017

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

• Use a variety of communication strategies. At TVH, we use flyers, restroom signage, social media, the intranet and email. • To really empower change, make activities simple, fun, engaging and repeat annually. Follow-up with recognition and company newsletter articles. • Think outside the box and blend activities. Consider adding a stretch break during meetings or walking meeting. • Survey employees to find out what topics of wellness interest them, then develop and offer classes based on this feedback. • Keep the program positive and rewarding. The Nudge program rewards employees with points that they can use towards the purchase of health and fitness items. A wellness community provides support and accountability as lifestyle habits are being transformed, for the health of it. Investing in programs to better employee minds and bodies will impact the bottom line. An engaged wellness program plays a role in everything from recruitment and retention to overall profitability. If you would like to know more about our wellness culture or creating a healthy workplace, contact TVH Health and Wellness Coach, Lucy DelSarto at lucy.delsarto@tvh.com.

SAFETY CORNER

Material handling hazards in the workplace Brian Colburn, Forklift Training Systems

Prior to conducting ALL onsite forklift training classes, our company conducts a site inspection; which looks at the customer’s forklifts, application, loads and many other areas. We also make general observations and recommendations, as well as, asking some tough questions, such as “do your people really wear their seatbelts and chock trailer wheels?” In many cases, we hear “no they don’t do those things very often” or “we don’t even have seatbelts and chocks.” This brings up an interesting issue. Even with good training, how safe can our workplace be with serious material handling hazards being present and not dealt with? In the U.S., OSHA would like to see workplace hazards eliminated through engineering means, if possible. This is possible in many cases, such as reworking a steep ramp into a less dangerous grade and providing better traction. In other cases, hazards may not be able to NOW THERE ARE

be totally eliminated, but can be identified and dealt with through training and recognition. An example of this might be adding warning signs, convex mirrors or other warning devices into areas where forklifts and people will be sharing space; since in many cases it may be impossible to keep them completely separate. One recommendation for end users and suppliers of training is to identify and correct material-handling hazards first, and then conduct training to reinforce the changes. Doing training without first correcting the hazards sends a conflicting message to your people. It in effect says, “We don’t want you to do it this way, but for now that is the best we can do.” Examples of some common material handling hazards: • Poor floor or lot conditions • Loads beyond the rated capacity of the forklifts • Missing, or non-functioning safety devices such as horns, seatbelts, alarms and strobes • Poorly stacked or stored loads and structurally damaged storage rack • Damaged or broken pallets • Lack of proper pre-shift checks and preventative maintenance • Lack of enforcement for any type of safety issues Correcting hazards is like curing a disease versus providing minor first aide. Even though the first aide may make you feel better for a while, the disease will keep reappearing without taking the steps to cure it for good. Philadelphia Scientific introduces electrolyte level indicator

New pipe rack scales from Alliance Scale, Inc.

Philadelphia Scientific has introduced SmartBlinky Pro™, a battery watering monitor that features the industry’s brightest electrolyte indicator and which also issues an audible alarm to alert personnel that electrolyte levels are low. SmartBlinky Pro is cable-mounted near the connector for maximum visibility – perfect for batteries that never leave the truck such as in fast and opportunity charging applications. Like the entire Blinky™ line of battery watering monitors, SmartBlinky Pro prevents the unnecessary checking of electrolyte levels and helps prevent costly permanent damage to batteries due to low electrolyte levels. www.phlsci.com

Custom manufactured portable rack scales for weighing pipe or bar stock up to 12,000 lbs. inside a facility or at a construction site and accumulating the data are available from Alliance Scale, Inc. Alliance portable rack scales feature a rugged steel frame, pipe carriages, locking wheels and casters, and are equipped with a CAS CI-201A weighing indicator with a full keypad, an LCD display, and accumulation counting. Combining weigh, count, and transport functions, these rack scales can be custom designed and built for weighing pipe or bar stock up to 12,000 lbs.

Modulift launches adjustable lifting/ spreader beam with next day delivery Modulift has launched a combined lifting and spreader beam utilizing a clamp system that provides a safe, fast and adjustable beam, enabling users to lift from multiple points top and bottom. The adjustable lifting/spreader bBeam (or MOD CLS) is stocked as a boxed product for immediate shipping and eliminates delays incurred waiting for alternative solutions, which often have to be manufactured to order. The fully adaptable system particularly lends itself to applications where flexibility and speed is key to productivity. www.modulift.com

J.W. Winco introduces metric size aluminum mounting clamps J.W. Winco, Inc. announced it now offers GN 784 metric size, aluminum mounting clamps with Swivel Ball Joint. The GN 784 aluminum mounting clamps, which are RoHS compliant, allow precise and variable adjustment of the ball pivot within the rotation range. This is a particular advantage when adjusting scanners, cameras, lighting, monitors, etc. Due to the efficient clamping mechanism, only small amounts of torque with the clamping screw result in comparatively strong clamping pressure on the ball, as the force is easily applied by the clamping lever. www.jwwinco.com

AutoGuide™ launches new tugger featuring natural feature guidance AutoGuide, a mobile robot manufacturer, unveiled its MAX-N10 tugger, featuring its reliable SUREPATH natural feature navigation that requires no magnetic tape or RFID tags to guide its way safely through a facility. Priced to be one of the most affordable vehicles of its kind, AutoGuide has targeted a payback of one year or less for most applications. AutoGuide’s SUREPATH natural feature system is easy and affordable to install or modify because it requires no physical guidepath system. Users simply drive a vehicle through the facility to map the environment and teach it the anticipated routes. The mapping data is automatically uploaded wirelessly to a SUREPATH PC where it can be modified and integrated for the precise operation including pick-drop points, intersection control, and the preferred routing logic. www.autoguideagvs.com

New KAUP roll clamp range improves paper handling technique

Uni-Dox™ inflatable shelter designed for versatility, durability

The paper industry is an intense, fast-moving environment with little patience for any downtime, and operations running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To ensure this material handling operation is as productive as possible KAUP has re-designed their rotating Roll Clamp range T458B. During the design process several areas were thoroughly studied and revised to ensure that the new range is as safe, durable and easy to use as possible. Modifications include an optimized clamping arm kinematics, which has been achieved by repositioning the pivot point of the clamp arms.

Responding to the needs of facilities whose loading docks service a wide variety of truck and trailer configurations, Rite-Hite has introduced the Uni-Dox™ Inflatable Shelter. The unique design of the Uni-Dox shelter allows it to rapidly inflate after the truck is docked and deflate before it leaves. The Uni-Dox inflates 50 percent faster than other inflatable shelters, thanks to its advanced air bag and connector designs (which hold air better during inflation). Its deflation and retraction efficiency is also enhanced by the use of a counterweight retraction system instead of a motorized return. www.ritehite.com

Hirschmann provides capacity indicator solution for Volvo’s pipelayers Volvo has partnered with Hirschmann MCS to install the cSCALE rated capacity indicator on their PL4809E and PL3005E pipelayers. Hirschmann’s cSCALE solution provides a 7” color graphic display of the pipelayer and monitors the maximum load and inclination. Sensors include angle, tilt, load pin, and anti-two block switch. An integrated datalogger / event recorder was also a requirement for the system. “The Volvo load management system is the only one of its kind,” said Tony den Hoed, Lead Engineer of Volvo’s Pipelayer Product Platform. www.belden.com

Shuttlelift concludes recent annual service school Shuttlelift’s CustomerCare team recently concluded its annual service school at their manufacturing facility in Sturgeon Bay, WI. The school is conducted as part of a continued effort to keep distributors and service technicians trained on the latest industry innovations to best serve their customers worldwide. The two-week course included the introduction and troubleshooting stages of a variety of new machine improvements across all Shuttlelift product lines. “Both new and existing service technicians need to be trained on the latest technological advancements,” said Rob Gunnlaugsson, director of Shuttlelift’s CustomerCare.

The tools for tomorrow’s dispatchers Want to make your dispatchers happier? Give them route optimization software. It’ll help them avoid mistakes, so your drivers will keep showing up on time and you can maintain a good reputation. Planning routes with pen and paper is timeconsuming and often inaccurate. If you have dozens of customers and multiple drivers, it can take hours. And after all that time spent, how do you even know you’re going to end up with a truly optimized route? There are many factors involved with route planning, such as traffic, construction, weather and customer availability. It’s easy to make a mistake and mess up a route when you try to do it by yourself. www.route4me.com

BUSINESS PROFILE

Colson Group celebrates anniversary of national distribution center

Colson Group, global manufacturer and supplier of caster, wheel and mobility solutions, celebrate the oneyear anniversary of opening its national distribution center (DC) in St. Joseph, Michigan this year. Opened in 2016, the 170,000-square-foot facility is Colson Group’s

first national DC supporting all of its brands of products and is an important part of the company’s One Colson initiative to best position itself for continued growth as the global leader in casters and wheels. The DC was created and optimized for the distribution and common assembly of Colson Group USA’s broad product offering – functions previously supported within its manufacturing plants. The shift in distribution responsibilities allows the manufacturing plants to further enhance their operational and service responsibilities and better support the group’s leading mix of USA-made products, customer-direct production orders, and regular feeds to the DC. It also allows the company to better leverage significant plant investments for additional made-in-the-USA manufacturing, including the recently released Albion 310 & 410 family of casters.

CREAMER'S CORNER

The stand-up rider scrubber, a different kind of machine! It is not often that I get to recommend a machine fairly new to the marketplace, a scrubber in its own category. After receiving an e-mail regarding a request to recommend a machine, of course one has to investigate all avenues to provide the best decision. This customer has a 55,000 square foot building that needs scrubbing at least three times a week. The surface is smooth and is in a generally clean environment. Sounds simple, right? Except that the maintenance person is also going to do the scrubbing. He is an older gentleman who can’t walk great distances. The walk-behind scrubber is out of the question. The gentleman also stated that he has restless leg syndrome. What this means is that he cannot sit a period of time as well, so no rider scrubber. I told the owner, you are killing me here, but let me think on it. After looking into the marketplace, what I found was obvious. These machines have been on the market for about 10 years, so not a long period of time by my standards. I found two

manufacturers that make this type of scrubber and both are excellent providers and long time innovators in the cleaning industry. One is Windsor (part of the Karcher Group) and the other is Nilfisk-Advance. So, do you know what I am going to recommend? Yes, the stand-up rider scrubber. It is perfect in the particular situation. Both manufacture a good product. These machines are made more for the commercial industry and not the industrial. But I figure since the environment is relatively a clean one, either machine would suffice. But, let’s look into both and compare them to decide which manufacture may be advantageous to purchase. The Windsor makes the Chariot in three different scrub path widths. They are 20 inch, 24 inch and 26 inch. The brush choice is either disc brushes or cylindrical brushes. One very important item is the solution tank capacity. For the Chariot it is 25 gallon. Let’s look at the square foot per hour cleaning rate. In the Chariot’s case it is 27,639 square foot per hour. This rate is for the 26 inch machine. So, I think this is perfect for their company. Now let’s look at the Nilfisk-Advance Scrubber. It is the model SC1500. This company only makes one scrub path width and that is 19 inches. A far cry from the 26 inch machine that Windsor makes, some 25% less. This may be a game changer, but let’s continue to compare. Let’s once again look at the solution tank capacity. The SC1500 has a capacity of 11.7 gallons, again far less than the 25 gallon capacity on the Chariot. Now, that’s the game changer. Now we can also take a look at what style brushes we want, either the disc brush or cylindrical. Because of the smooth floor I would recommend the disc brushes. The cylindrical brushes are specifically designed to scrub imperfections on the surface such as cracks. This is not a hindrance so the disc brush type is just fine. So, I think we have a recommendation - the Windsor Chariot I scrub 26. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber. Barcoding expands consumables services, supply chain experts Barcoding, Inc. announces it has brought on three supply chain experts to assist in the expansion of its Consumables by Barcoding™ practice. These new team members will help new and existing customers overcome challenges and comply with industry best practices in labeling. Barcoding’s consumables department and offered services will provide more access to subject matter experts to the company’s entire customer base as well as more expertise on how to overcome challenges in labeling. These challenges include: Compliance labeling: Many verticals have been faced with more regulations and are now being required to use specific compliance formats. Because of this, consumables customers need more assistance with understanding and designing the correct labels to meet these regulations. Operational expenses: Small- and medium-sized businesses are seeking more ways to control their operational expenses in an effort to operate more efficiently. One way to do this is to reduce the costs associated with labels and consumables. Barcoding’s team is able to help customers reduce this indirect spend by 20 percent by consolidating the use of outside vendors. Label trends: The use of RFID in the consumables and labeling market has grown dramatically in the last year. There’s a large growth potential and Barcoding’s extensive experience in RFID will be able to support customers looking to streamline the adoption of this technology. Dave C. Reba, director of consumable sales, Barcoding, Inc., said, “We’ve found that many companies are turning to small, local converting shops to fulfill their labeling needs due their local presence. This can add risk due to limited ability to provide services and scale with the customer’s needs. Eventually, the customer may need to change vendors as their needs evolve. Whether small, mid-size or enterprise, it may be to their best interest to use organizations that have consulting services, such as Barcoding. At Barcoding, we have the expertise, proven technology, materials and scalability to design label solutions that help reduce risk and cost of acquisition.” In addition to Reba, Barcoding adds David Stevens, consumables sales and project manager, and Peter Zalinksi, product manager of identification solutions, to the consumables team. Together they bring more than 60 years of 44
