New study details impact of industrial trucks

Forklift manufacturers, dealers and distributors drive billions of dollars and thousands of jobs into U.S. economy Forklifts are critical in keeping America’s just-in-time inventory in motion and are the workhorses that move America’s goods on a daily basis. Nearly every product sold in this country is touched by a forklift in its lifetime, and a new report issued in June quantifies this manufacturing sector’s strong economic impact and employment rates. The report from the Industrial Truck Association (ITA) and Oxford Economics offers detailed data at national and state levels. “Forklifts have been lifting America’s economy for over a century and we can now quantify our industry’s economic contributions to the overall U.S. economy,” said Brett Wood, president and CEO of Toyota Material Handling North America and chairman of ITA. The report, entitled Lifting America: The Economic Impact of Forklift Manufacturers, Dealers and Distributors, includes several significant findings, such as: Globally, more than 1 million industrial truck or forklift units are sold annually. In the U.S., Canada and Mexico, more than 230,000 units were sold in 2016. With over 200,000 units in the U.S. alone, more than 60 percent are electric. The industry’s economic contribution to the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) was $25.7 billion in 2015. The industry’s activity supports a total of 209,000 U.S. jobs. Each job within the industry supports 2.5 additional jobs elsewhere in the U.S. economy. The industrial truck manufacturing industry workforce has a greater share of veterans compared to all other manufacturing as well as 8

other industries. In 2015, the industry paid $5.3 billion to local, state and federal governments in taxes. Industrial trucks are categorized into seven classes based on characteristics, such as engine type, design and size. Manufacturers of industrial trucks make a widespread contribution throughout the U.S. economy. Of the $25.7 billion total contribution to GDP, some $14.9 billion results from supply chain and consumer spending activities. Overall, the sector benefits other parts of the national economy, including, for example, $3.5 billion in trade, transportation and utilities; $2.1 billion in professional and business services; and $1.1 billion in education and health services. “Forklifts facilitate the production of goods and services, creating increased efficiencies,” said Brian Feehan, president of ITA. “Industrial trucks play an important functional role in the production process in virtually every industry.” In total, industrial truck manufacturers support more than 209,600 jobs. The companies directly employ more than 59,700 workers in manufacturing, sales and support staff positions. In addition, for each worker directly employed by the industrial truck sector, 2.5 additional jobs are supported in the wider economy, either in the supply chains of industrial truck manufacturers or through the wage spending of those employed by the firms themselves or their supply chains. In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that more than 540,000 forklift operators are employed across the country in all 50 states. The Oxford Economics report takes into consideration the direct, indirect and induced contributions of the industry. “We were honored to be selected to perform this analysis and work with the industrial truck manufacturers to understand and quantify the significance of their economic impact as well as narrate their vital contribution to America’s industrial production sector,” said Hamilton Galloway, Head of Consulting, Americas for Oxford Economics. “Workers in this sector are highly productive, and wages reflect this with above average annual income and placing them above the median income earners in most states.” The complete report can be viewed on ITA’s website at www.indtrk.org.

potential risk factors affected by blood pressure, cholesterol and BMI. At TVH, our on-site HealthStat health clinic provides a range of services including HRAs and recommendations for improving health. HealthStat also conducts various employee presentations throughout the year on various topics including blood pressure testing and skin cancer screenings. Another way we educate and engage employees at TVH is with guest speakers who specialize in different areas of wellness. For each speaker, we offer three 30-minute class sessions approximately 75-100 employees attend. A few recent topics have included foot health, acupuncture, self-defense, forward head posture, spine health and hypnotism. While diet and exercise are two crucial aspects to a healthy body, it is important not to overlook a healthy mind. Educating employees on thoughts and emotions is just as vital. Lifestyle Wellness: Mind, Heart and Body with Coach Lucy is a 30-minute weekly class over 40-weeks that includes a variety of topics such as movement, supplements, gratitude, conflict resolution, money matters, sleep, laughter and music therapy. Health is our greatest wealth and employees are an employer’s biggest asset, thus John Adams quote resonates even today: “There are two educations. One should teach us how to make living and the other how to live.”

INDUSTRY NEWS

Hänel receives Patriotic Employer Award Hänel Storage Systems, manufacturer of automated vertical storage units, announced that its chief executive, Brian Cohen, has been recognized by the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). The Patriotic Employer Award is a means of distinguishing employers who support their National Guard and Reserve employees. Cohen earned the award based on Hänel’s efforts to support one of its employees, Chris Farnsworth of Clayton, NC, through measures such as flexible schedules, leaves of absence and time off prior to and after military deployment. Farnsworth is one of Hänel’s Regional Service Technicians, maintaining the company’s equipment in the Southeastern United States, and nominated Cohen for the award. He has been with the organization since August 2014, and is also a Master Sergeant E-7 in the North Carolina Air National Guard. Farnsworth served in active duty from January 12, 2016 to July 29, 2016 as a member of the 449th Air Expeditionary Group, Rescue Operations Center at Camp Lemmonier in the nation of Djibouti in eastern Africa, and is normally stationed with the 263rd Combat Communications Squadron at Stanly County Airport in Albemarle, NC. During his deployment, Farnsworth’s fellow service technicians and regional service managers absorbed his workload, and he felt Hänel went well beyond the Uniformed Service Employment and reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) requirements. “While I may receive the attention for deploying, it was my family members and coworkers who filled the void and deserve equal, if not more credit for their sacrifices,” Farnsworth said. This was Farnsworth’s third deployment, following a 15-month tour of duty in Iraq in 2003-04 and a fourmonth tour in Kuwait in 2011. “Hänel proudly supports all of our employees, and the company is profoundly honored to support Chris in this manner,” said Cohen. “He is a patriotic individual who leads a life that is a positive example for the rest of our staff.” www.hanel.us

INDUSTRY NEWS

Re-Teck opens Bay-area HD In a move to support the growing number of senior technology executives seeking to better execute a North America-based Reverse Supply Chain Management (RSCM) strategy, Re-Teck announced the opening of its new headquarters in Redwood City, California. The move comes ahead of an expansion of the company's Dallas-area RSCM facility, and the September opening of an RSCM facility in Milipitas, California. The Redwood City headquarters will house program management, engineering, R&D, business development and support staff. Re-Teck provides clients with a simple solution to a complex issue. Its end-to-end RSCM platform, currently deployed by Global 500 brands such as Microsoft, NEC, Amazon and Motorola, eliminates the logistical, compliance and technological issues of technology takeback initiatives. Re-Teck’s engineering teams consider the aftermarket value for devices, the primary market value for component parts — screens, switches, and chips as

well as the recycling value of metals —and extract the usable elements for re-sale to Re-Teck’s global partner exchange. This RSCM process has been pioneered by Re-Teck and its parent company Li Tong Group (LTG) of Hong Kong. “Recycling is a dirty word at Re-Teck,” said Linda Li, Chief Strategy Officer, Re-Teck. “This is because it used to simply mean shredding the devices; re-using a limited volume of the raw materials, and sending more materials to landfill. At Re-Teck, we understand the potential of technology to be profitably disassembled with components being repurposed and re-used, while addressing regulations and better protecting the planet. The commoditization of recycling has stopped at many of the most progressive technology brands, and they’re now counting on Re-Teck as a strategic partner to help them navigate the new world order.” www.re-teck.com

J.W. Winco offers metric size spring cotter pins J.W. Winco, Inc., supplier of standard industrial machine components, announced it now offers GN 1024 metric size steel or stainless steel spring cotter pins. The GN 1024 spring cotter pins, which are RoHS compliant, are used for the axial mounting of bolts and axles, as well as an anti-twist mechanism. Due to their double loop, spring cotter pins have a flatter spring characteristic and are therefore easier to install. Also, a retaining cable with a key ring can be attached to the double loop to safeguard the spring cotter pins against loss. The steel version is zinc plated with a blue passivated finish. www.jwwinco.com

New vertical drop lifter Handling Specialty creates custom lifts in multiple styles and capacities. This mast style belt lift was engineered to transfer an automotive chassis from a fixed height conveyor, raising or lowering its elevation, where the chassis continues on its path through the factory, via another fixed height conveyor system. Designed with redundant safety systems and multiple belts, this mast style belt lift was engineered to reduce deflection, ensure level and accurate positioning, support cantilevered loads, and offer high-duty cycles. The mast structure supports the lift carriage, while the drive train employs a belt equalization system, operated by an electromechanical motor with lock-position actuators. www.handling.com

Dawes Crane moves memorial phantom F-4 jet fighter

A crane operator from Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental maneuvered the Link-Belt crane into place. The weight of the plane was transferred from its display pedestal to the crane’s extended boom. The pedestal’s bolts were released one by one. With the last, the aircraft lurched free, and was briefly “airborne” once again. This moment of flight was perhaps the most poignant nod to U.S. Air Force Captain Lance P. Sijan. He was an exceptional young man who was lost to his family and friends in the Vietnam War at the age of 25. But his story of determination and dedication endures. For more than two decades, at 440th Airlift Wing of the Air Force Reserve in Milwaukee, Capt. Sijan had been honored with a decommissioned, dedicated McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom jet fighter—a replica of the plane he was in when he went down. Then the 440th moved to Fort Bragg in North Carolina. It was important to Sijan’s sister, Janine Sijan Rozina, to keep Lance’s story alive and the symbol that represented him in his home state. Through her dedication and persistence, she was able to get the plane relocated to a new plaza at the entrance of the General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, where it would stand as a memorial for those who have served and to represent his courage, sacrifice, and leadership. Moving a 26,000-pound plane is not a simple task. But gradually, Sijan Rozina assembled a team of contractors to make it happen. Each donated their time and effort to the task. Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental, a member of the

ALL Family of Companies, was a proud part of this team. Planning began last summer. Dawes Sales Manager Joe Ruddell would pilot the team that would lift the plane, load it onto a flatbed truck, transport it through a shallow tunnel, and then lift and set it onto the foundation in the new plaza. Dawes’ Link-Belt HTC 86100-XL truck crane, with a 110-USt capacity, was chosen for the job along with a 53-foot Manac expandable trailer from DST Inc. (Dawes Specialized Transport). With its combination of maneuverability and strength, the HTC 86100-XL was able to get close enough to the pedestals in both locations. On a rainy, windy moving day, the truck maneuvered through a tunnel that was so tight, the plane barely fit through, even with folded wings—an 18-foot-high space, 16.5 feet of it occupied by the jet. The team proceeded carefully, mindful of the legacy of the man and his memorial. Once they reached the plaza, the Link-Belt lifted the jet off the trailer and, with precision, set it onto its new pedestal, where it was bolted into place. Onlookers, including veterans and schoolchildren, were taken by the enormity of both the plane and what it represents. In a May 17 interview with the Milwaukee Independent, Sijan Rozina said her brother’s is not a story of war, but of love for family, country, and comrades. She recounted Lance’s firm philosophy that everyone should “Bring your best every day. It’s not always going to be an A+, but it’s your best for that day. [You need it] for the challenge you’re unaware that is coming.” The ALL Family shares a similar philosophy, resulting in its reputation for meeting every lifting challenge head on—as surely does the entire team of contractors who banded together to make Sijan Rozina’s dream happen. “We are extremely proud to be part of a community that recognizes individuals like Lance, and have been privileged to count ourselves as part of the team who made this project possible,” Ruddell said. Capt. Sijan was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1976. Part of the medal’s citation reads, “Captain Sijan’s extraordinary heroism and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty at the cost of his life are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Air Force… .” The F-4C Phantom is poised to honor Sijan’s memory in perpetuity, thanks in part to the ALL Family and a sister who wouldn’t give up. www.allcrane.com www.mhnetwork.com

Raymond Handling Concepts built its company on trust

Striving to provide its customers with a sense of trust from day one, Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation today revealed some of its principles and client testimonials, reinforcing its commitment to employees and customers alike. As a result of their guiding principles and culture, the company has been heralded by its customers and consistently certified by Great Places to Work and named Bay Area Top Places to Work by Workplace Dynamics. “For more than 30 years leading Raymond Handling Concepts, I have tried to build a culture based on mutual trust. I want the individuals that represent this company 34

to understand that if we give trust first, we will be given it in return,” said Stephen Raymond. “Trust is a key factor in building lifetime relationships, and we are committed to both customer and employee as we move forward in our business to providing material handling solutions to Northern California, Nevada, and the Pacific Northwest.” “Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation has been exceptional in getting Pacific Foods what it has needed to operate efficiently. The time and effort that Raymond put into the transition of forklift providers made the switch simple and easy. The team at Raymond has been stellar at communicating issues and servicing lifts in addition to providing support and recommendations,” said Eric Mueller, MRO Buyer, Pacific Foods. “It’s a “breath of fresh air” to work with a company that is so professional, accommodating, thorough and courteous. We are very happy we made the change to Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation,” said Elizabeth Schulz, Maintenance Coordinator, Sherwin-Williams. To meet the goal of always improving employee and customer satisfaction, the company leverages a Net Promoter Score (NPS) strategy. NPS is a management tool that can be used to gauge the loyalty of a company’s customer and employee relationships. It serves as an alternative to traditional customer satisfaction research which is more closely correlated with revenue growth. NPS has been widely adopted with more than two thirds of Fortune 1000 companies using the metric. In addition to its focus on customer satisfaction, Raymond Handling Concepts works hard to build an employee culture based on mutual trust. The leaders at Raymond Handling Concepts believe that its trust-based culture is the most important contribution they can make as a lasting legacy for the company. The company works hard at achieving this goal through consistency and leveraging measurable tools that help determine how employees are responding. www.raymondhandling.com

CREAMER'S CORNER

The Model Tennant 7400 scrubber and the maintenance chart If you are familiar with the Tennant Model 7400, you are one of the many of thousands that can appreciate this model. First introduced in 1996, many of the Tennant sales group was wary of its success. Remember it was replacing a machine that was around since 1979 and that machine was the Tennant 528. At the time many thought that the 528 was irreplaceable which was quickly disputed. Now we are talking about the 7400 in the same manner, a relic of a time gone-by. But for those who still are running this equipment it is a testament to the quality and design of one of my favorite scrubbers. So, how can this equipment still be running on a daily grind among the newest? It is all in the dedicated service man or woman who has maintained the equipment Let us take a look at the simple maintenance chart for this scrubber. Maintenance charts were developed to guide the service person on how to maintain said piece of equipment. The chart is broken down into timed intervals which include daily maintenance. 50 hours maintenance 100 hours maintenance 200 hours maintenance 400 hours maintenance 800 hours maintenance and beyond…

2. Check the coolant level. 3. Change the engine oil and the engine air filter. 4. Check the engine cover seals for damage or wear. 5. Check the fan belt tension 6. Check and/or adjust the idler speed. 7. Check the hydraulic reservoir level. 8. Check the tires for damage such as cuts. 9. Clean the rear squeegee with soapy water and relevel the blade for maximum performance 10. Lubricate the rear squeegee casters. 11. Lubricate the scrub brush idlers. 12. Check the scrub head skirts for damage and wear 13. Check the side brush skirt for damage and wear. From this point there is the 200 hour, 400 hour and the 800 hour maintenance. At 800 hours, the following items must be performed. 1. Replace the filler cap for the hydraulic reservoir. 2. Replace the hydraulic suction strainer. 3. Change the hydraulic fluid. 4. Check for wear and tears of all the hydraulic lines. 5. Flush completely the coolant system. 6. Retorque the propelling motor shaft nut. 7. Retorgue the front drive wheel nuts. 8. Clean and retighten the battery cables and all related connections.

Let me go through some of these. However due to space restrains, if you want the entire chart, I could e-mail it to Keep in mind that all along you must still perform the you per your request. 100 hour and at this point you would have performed this eight times. Real estate firm closes deal for new logistics center in NJ port and rail stations,” says Joel Bergstein, president, Lincoln Equities Group. “We purchased the site at 171 River Road three years ago when most developers were focusing on the I-95 corridor, and we’re fortunate to anticipate where the state’s next wave of development would take place.” 171 River Road is located one mile from Interstate 287 (with direct access off both Exits 8 and 9), close to Port Newark/Elizabeth, and is serviceable by "F Plate" rail cars. The property is a former brownfield site that was fully remediated by Union Carbide after the shutdown of a Bakelite plastics manufacturing plant in 1939. “The development of 171 River Road is a great example of what happens when government and private business come together with a common goal,” says Brian C. Wahler, Mayor of Piscataway Township. “Thanks to our collaboration with Lincoln Equities Group, this former brownfield site – which sat empty for decades – is now positioned to attract businesses and jobs into our community, adding to our tax base.” The Township of Piscataway offered a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) as an incentive to businesses and committed to completely reconstructing Baekeland Avenue, which provides access to the site • Do you have equipment to sell? from Exit 8. • Are you looking for more dealers? “We were glad to be able to partner with Lincoln Equities, the team • Is your website outdated or hard to navigate? there is a great partner that has the local operating expertise we value,” • Do you need help with publicity or copy-writing? says Marcel Arsenault, CEO of Real • Do you think direct mail is too costly? Lincoln Equities Group LLC (LEG) and its partner, Real Capital Solutions, announced that the firm has sold a 228acre industrial property at 171 River Road in Piscataway to the Rockefeller Group for $57 million. Formerly a brownfield site, the fully remediated property off Interstate 287 is fully entitled to build 2.4 million square feet of space for industrial distribution and light manufacturing development. The Rockefeller Group will break ground on two new buildings later this summer with an overall project cost between $225 and $250 million. Since purchasing 171 River Road in 2014, Lincoln Equities Group and Real Capital Solutions worked closely with the Township of Piscataway to redevelop this property, which had been vacant since the 1960’s. LEG developed a site plan and secured development rights to construct up to eight buildings ranging from 250,000 square feet to 700,000 square feet, as well as new roads, infrastructure, and landscaping. “This property closes at an important time for the state’s I-287 corridor, which is now seeing significant interest from industrial developers due to its proximity to Newark’s airport,

INDUSTRY NEWS

Q3 economic outlook forecasts expanded 3.6% growth in equipment and software investment in 2017 Investment in equipment and software is expected to grow 3.6 percent in 2017, according to the Q3 update to the 2017 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook released by the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation. The Foundation revised its 2017 equipment and software investment growth forecast up from 2.8% growth expected in its Q2 update to the 2017 Economic Outlook released in April. The report predicts that equipment and software investment should continue to bounce back from a lackluster 2016 after a solid start in the first quarter of 2017, driven by overall improvements in business confidence and a more positive outlook for the industrial sector. The Foundation’s report, which is focused on the $1 trillion equipment leasing and finance industry, highlights key trends in equipment investment and places them in the context of the broader U.S. economic climate. The report will be updated quarterly throughout 2017. Ralph Petta, President of the Foundation and President and CEO of the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association, said, “Stronger-than-expected first quarter capital investment points to a more robust forecast for the year. This is borne out not only by industry performance metrics, but also by anecdotal reports from leasing and finance executives in a variety of key industry sectors. Headwinds emanating from Washington, DC may alter this trajectory as the summer wears on, but, for now, it appears that 2017 growth should eclipse that in 2016."

Highlights from the study include: • Equipment and software investment experienced a bright first quarter of 2017 • U.S. economic growth in the second half of 2017 is likely to yield a notable improvement on first quarter growth of just 1.4% due to a rebound in consumer spending, solidly positive business investment and a strengthening global economy. • Though 2017 is shaping up to be a better year for U.S. economic growth than 2016, headwinds to watch include U.S. trade policy uncertainty and budget battles. • The Foundation-Keybridge U.S. Equipment & Software Investment Momentum Monitor, which is included in the report, tracks 12 equipment and software investment verticals. The Momentum Monitor Sector Matrix provides a customized data visualization of current values of each vertical based on recent momentum and historical strength. Of the 12 verticals, 11 posted positive annualized growth in Q1.
