FEATURE ARTICLE

10 warehouse problems | 10 innovative solutions Running a warehouse at maximum efficiency is extremely challenging. You may not always have the best tool for every task, but you’re getting the job done with your current equipment and systems. Meanwhile, warehouse problems — and potential opportunities — don’t always get the attention they deserve because the work needs to get done. Right now. Despite the urgent demands of everyday business, sometimes it can help to slow things down for just a moment, step back and take a closer look at the big picture. More manpower or another forklift may solve some issues. However, many warehouse challenges can be better addressed by finding the right piece of materials handling equipment for key tasks, streamlining existing systems or even adopting new technology. Here, we’ll examine a few ideas for increasing efficiency — some that may sound obvious and others you may not have thought of — from specialized equipment and technology to innovative warehouse and storage solutions.

often require a stable, portable work platform that provides access to high, hard-to-reach spaces. Solution Personnel lifts come in a range of different styles, each offering unique functionality to help you get work done in high places. • Telescoping boom lifts, for example, dramatically extend your vertical reach and can be maneuvered by the operator from atop the work platform. •A rticulating boom lifts, drivable at full elevation, can enable operators to reach elevated positions not easily accessed by a straight telescopic lift. • S cissor lifts can be an excellent option when you need more workspace and more lifting capacity, because they generally feature larger work platforms on top and can handle heavier loads than boom lifts. •A dditional options include mast boom lifts, vertical personal lifts and a handy, portable device called the LiftPod

Problem #1 Your warehouse has narrow aisles, making it tough to navigate, slowing down operations and causing occasional damage from forklift operators bumping into things. It’s a scenario that is all too common. Solution Nowadays, there is an incredible variety of narrow aisle forklifts specifically designed to operate in tight spaces, including at least one model that is so compact it’s capable of driving through a standard-sized doorway. Some narrow aisle forklifts (and very narrow aisle forklifts, an industry term describing equipment capable of operating in the very tightest spaces) allow the operator to stand up instead of sitting down, yielding a better view of the material they are picking or stocking. Most can be equipped with a variety of hydraulic attachments to further enhance their versatility. Utilizing narrow aisle forklifts can also be a way to maximize your space if you’re designing a new warehouse or overhauling an existing space, enabling you to add more racking to your warehouse configuration and store more in the same footprint.

Problem #3 You need more vertical reach when it comes to picking orders. Solution Most order-picking equipment works quite well for low-level needs, but may lack the ability to reach higher positions to access needed items. By utilizing a mid-level or high-level order picker, your operator can move about the warehouse just as easily while gaining the ability to reach upper-level racks.

Problem #2 Many warehouses and outdoor jobs require workers to perform hands-on work at high elevations. Such tasks 8

Problem #4 In many warehouses, employees are counted on to constantly carry items from Point A to Point B, taking up time that could be spent on more important tasks. Solution Have you considered equipping your warehouse with a Weasel? An innovative product from SSI Schaefer, the Weasel is a conveying system in which automated carts navigate along an easy-to-install optical tracking system to efficiently transport goods throughout your facility. Problem #5 Your operation has been running smoothly, but you think there may be opportunities to boost efficiency through automation.

Solution Say hello to Balyo, a Paris-based company now partnering with Hyster-Yale to produce cutting-edge robotic self-guided vehicles. The system uses laser mapping to create a map of your facility. Advanced software then enables the self-guided trucks to perform a full spectrum of materials handling functions while working collaboratively with employees. Balyo’s devices can be programmed to know when and where to pick up an item, then move it to the correct location and even analyze the rack to determine the best possible position for placement. Problem #6 You run a busy warehouse, but the ongoing need to charge and maintain the batteries on your electric forklifts and other materials handling equipment can be a major headache. Solution There are several game-changing developments on the horizon when it comes to power sources. Lithium ion batteries, for example, charge much faster then lead-acid batteries, are safer and require little to no maintenance — meaning no more watering, acid, spills or fumes. Though they are more expensive, they deliver significant savings in annual maintenance costs. Plus, they come with an extend warranty compared to a standard lead-acid battery. Lithium ion batteries do not hold a charge for as long, but can be fully recharged in as little as an hour and a half. In addition, installing one in a pallet jack can potentially shorten its chassis length by several inches, which can be helpful when it comes to maneuverability. Problem #7 You run a fleet of more than 60 trucks, but are concerned that you are spending way too much time and money just keeping your vehicles charged and fueled. Solution Hydrogen. Powering your fleet with hydrogen gives you the ability to create your own fuel right at your own facility. Currently, the ROI calculations favor larger companies, but advancing technology means it will soon be possible for even modest-sized operations to efficiently produce hydrogen fuel, commonly made from natural gas and water through a process called steam methane reforming. In addition to instant refueling that practically eliminates downtime, you’ll also be able to reclaim any space currently taken up by battery charging and maintenance rooms. A Massachusetts-based hydrogen fuel cell innovator called Nuvera is among the industry leaders when it comes to charting the future of emissions-free hydrogen fuel technology. 10

Problem #8 Your operation is growing and you need more trained forklift operators to handle your ever-increasing workload. Solution Some materials handling equipment companies also offer on-site, truck-specific training for the operators who will be using the equipment. Such training helps companies stay in compliance with OSHA regulations. Safety is obviously the most important consideration, but additional benefits of forklift training include increased productivity, reduced insurance premiums and lower equipment costs. Problem #9 Continuing growth has your warehouse at or near full capacity and soon you will need additional space. Solution Technology has brought new opportunities to help maximize your existing warehouse footprint. For example, cutting-edge CAD technology utilizes 3D modeling to help determine the optimal organization for your physical environment and your workflow. In addition, there are less high-tech physical improvements that can help you squeeze more storage rack capacity out of your existing space. And for some applications, it may make sense to explore adding mezzanine structures to create a second or third level inside your facility. Problem #10 You suspect there may be significant opportunities to design a more efficient workflow, but the daily pressure of running a bustling warehouse leaves little time rethink or improve specific processes, let alone to step back and analyze the entire operation. Solution You may decide that it makes sense to get another perspective from someone who specializes analyzing your physical space, your equipment and systems, and your workflow; and then recommending customized solutions that are tailored to your unique and specific needs. INDUSTRY NEWS

LLT Labels celebrates 20th anniversary LLT Labels recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary of operations in June. Two decades of experience have developed LLT Labels into a well-known bar coding and labeling solutions provider. “Our team of experts has helped businesses nationwide find a solution that works for them regardless of industry or application, from stock shipping labels to custommade labels,” said Sara Whited, supervisor, LLT Labels. “Customer satisfaction has been our top priority from day one, and we are committed to exceeding our customers’ expectations by providing them with a complete line of top quality products and world-class service.” In 1997, Laser Label Technologies opened its doors in Stow, Ohio, with a focus on laser labels for high-speed and ink-jet printers. After six years establishing a regional reputation serving businesses across Northeast Ohio, Laser Label Technologies rebranded to LLT Bar Code & Label in 2003, complete with a new logo. This represented a shift in focus to total bar coding and labeling solutions. The company continued experiencing growth and

visibility in the labeling industry. TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Goals and friendly competition Lucy DelSarto, TVH

Over the past decade companies of all sizes have embraced wellness programs as a powerful component in reducing health care costs and enhancing morale, as well as a recruitment tool. A successful wellness program, like a successful business, requires time, creativity and leaders to help execute it. At TVH, numerous challenges are offered throughout the year at all locations, including the United States, Canada and Mexico. Employees participate in quarterly walking challenges, a Garden Challenge, a Plank Challenge and a Wall Sit Challenge. The goal is to incorporate a friendly competition with a time line to enhance quality of life. The challenges can ignite a spark that becomes a fire to choose a healthy lifestyle. Everyone can participate. The only limitation is the one you put on your mind. “I no longer see these as a ‘challenge’ but a lifestyle,” said employee Teshome Ditamo Employee Mike Chambers fractured four vertebrae in his lower back and was told by the doctors it was something he’d have to deal with. “I had a big day walking on the first day of our walking challenge: 20,200 steps. I would like to challenge all of the walkers to beat that number,” Chambers said. “The walking challenge has become a lifestyle for me and my family. Even my dog is benefiting from the increased activity. We are far more active on the week nights and weekends,” said employee Madyson Wood. Employee Ricardo Guevara uses the walking challenge as an opportunity to connect with his team. “My team wants to try and beat me,” Guevara said. As a leader, the gift of providing the motivation and encouragement leaves a lasting rippling effect on many lives. Find and support Wellness Ambassadors within your company, provide on-going challenges and watch the wave of wellness take hold. Each positive choice you make is affecting you in small ways that will add up to big change over time. If you’d like to learn more about our programs or health and wellness at your workplace contact Lucy DelSarto at editorial@mhnetwork.com. 16

SAFETY CORNER

Compliant forklift training requires doing your homework I recently received a phone call that really got me thinking. A small customer of ours was getting ready to do some training and their purchasing people were forcing them to use another training supplier. When I probed to find out if we had done something wrong, it was apparent that our performance had nothing to do with the change. The new supplier was offering to do the training in half the time and at half the cost, tough things to pass up when you are a company on a tight budget. I sent them a list of questions they would want to ask the new supplier so they could ensure it was at least being done properly:

RED-ZONE DANGER AREA WARNING LIGHT

Dealer pricing is available ➤ Operating Voltage:

The Red-Zone Danger Area Warning Lights put a bright red line on the floor to keep pedestrians a safe distance away from mobile equipment. They are commonly used on the sides, but can also be installed on the rear or even on all four sides to create a complete NO GO AREA. The Red Zone is distributed globally by Forklift Training Systems. Introduce your customers to this product before your competition does, order your units today!

1) Are they planning on visiting your facility prior to the training? 2) Did they survey your site, make recommendations or take pictures to customize their program to your site and specific forklifts? 3) Did they ask about your application and forklift safety issues over the years? I pretty much knew the answers in advance. Many trainers and training companies feel they don’t need to look over a customer’s site and equipment since they feel their generic program is already sufficient, not to mention it would take time and money to prepare. Unfortunately, they present the same identical training program in lumber yards, steel mills, warehouses and grocery stores without any thought to how the applications and equipment varies. I have seen companies and trainers who have not changed their programs in nearly 20 years; they still use the exact same material for every client, no modification or customization period. It is hard to believe OSHA revised the forklift standard way back in 1998, how time flies! OSHA has made its stance clear, that type of training would be non-compliant; it just doesn’t provide enough of the right information to get the job done correctly. Years ago, I read an industry article that hit it right on the head. It stated: “Get this straight: a classroom is not a site. A site is a warehouse, distribution center, dock or yard. If you rely on an outside trainer to get your operators up to speed, you had better make sure that trainer understands your environment. That means touring it, observing operations and noting load characteristics. If a trainer does not do those things and you suffer an accident the contracted trainer won’t likely be cited by OSHA but you can, and likely will be. Ultimate responsibility for training and evaluation is always on the end user.” Written by Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems, a leader in forklift safety training and related products. BUSINESS PROFILE

Westfalia Technologies celebrates 25 years Westfalia Technologies, Inc. (Westfalia), provider of logistics solutions for manufacturers and distributors, announces the celebration of its 25th anniversary. Founded in 1992, Westfalia introduced its Europeandesigned line of automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) to the North and South American markets and has been operating out of its York, Pennsylvania manufacturing facility and other sales and service locations for 25 years. The company recognized the need for high-quality warehousing and materials handling solutions supported by standardized software and is grateful for the acceptance and trust it has earned from its U.S. customer base. Since its first AS/RS installation more than 24 years ago at Firmenich, Inc.’s Plainsboro, New Jersey facility–which is still in operation today–the system designs have evolved to incorporate order fulfillment solutions targeting the U.S. manufacturing sector. With installations ranging from liquor distribution to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit blood plasma storage, Westfalia has developed custom automated warehousing solutions for the food, beverage, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, resulting in continued success. Today, Westfalia is a vital player in the dynamic and growing automated materials handling industry. Tailored to meet each project’s unique needs, Westfalia’s solutions help their customers realize new operational efficiencies, better utilize space and position themselves for future growth. Westfalia attributes its continued success to a combination of earning the trust of its employees and customers, providing customers with innovative, longterm solutions and building successful relationships. Dan Labell, president, Westfalia, said, “As president, I’ve seen our company develop its products and services over the past 25 years. Our employees have made that possible, and it’s been a joy to watch their success, motivation and self-development.” Most recently, the launch of Westfalia Parking Solutions in late-2016 has given Westfalia the opportunity to continue to evolve its automation technology to create custom automated parking solutions. In 2017, Westfalia will continue to expand this brand and remain not only a market leader in warehouse automation but also in the automated parking industry. www.westfaliausa.com

INDUSTRY NEWS

I.D. Systems to acquire Keytroller I.D. Systems, Inc., provider of mobile asset management technology and solutions for the Industrial Internet of Things, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire substantially all of the assets of Keytroller, LLC, a manufacturer and marketer of a wide range of electronic products for managing forklifts, construction vehicles, and other industrial equipment. The purchase price is $9.0 million at close, consisting of $7.0 million in cash and $2.0 million in I.D. Systems common stock, plus up to $3.0 million in earn-out consideration over two years, also in I.D. Systems common stock. The acquisition of Keytroller is expected to close before the end of July, 2017, upon satisfaction of customary closing conditions. In 2016, Keytroller generated revenue of $6.6 million and adjusted EBITDA of $1.2 million. Beginning in the third quarter of 2017, Keytroller’s results will be included as part of I.D. Systems’ industrial truck management product line. The two companies’ market positions and distribution channels are highly complementary. I.D. Systems sells its flagship PowerFleet® industrial truck management systems primarily to large global enterprises and through lift truck manufacturers (OEMs), while Keytroller markets most of its products through a large network of lift truck dealers to small and medium-size end users. PowerFleet® rarely competes head-to-head with Keytroller devices. By combining Keytroller’s mid-range and economy products with PowerFleet®, I.D. Systems becomes an unmatched single source of fleet management technology for industrial truck owners and operators, which the company believes will help it compete more effectively and diversify its revenue sources. The acquisition of Keytroller also gives I.D. Systems a new source of industrial truck usage data for its PowerFleet IQ® analytics database, enhancing the value of that tool for multi-site enterprises. www.id-systems.com

PRODUCT PREVIEW

Corrugated Pallet Saves Money (and the Environment) Green Ox® corrugated pallets deliver on strength and reliability while providing a solution for companies that want to eliminate inconvenient, hazardous, and expensive-to-use wood pallets. Green Ox pallets can be manufactured and delivered anywhere and can be assembled in-house on an as-needed basis by hand or via a new pallet assembly machine that assembles 200-250 corrugated paper pallets per hour, providing Just In Time (J-I-T) pallet production for end-of-line, realtime pallet availability. Green Ox corrugated pallets are 100 percent recyclable, thereby increasing recycling revenue, removing the hassle of reverse logistics, and decreasing pallet recovery expenses—all while minimizing the environmental footprint. www.greenoxpallets.com

Trailer moving system allows pedestrians to move up to 11,000kg

LGH to expand hydra-slide fleet to serve U.S. rental market

Electric tug specialist MasterMover has launched its articulated trailer moving system, a pedestrian operated motorised electric tug that can move loads of up to 11,000kg. The product, named the TMS1650+, is ideal for use by maintenance staff in the automotive, logistics, rail and transport sectors. The TMS1650+ uses a hydraulic weight transfer system to allow pedestrian operators to easily move large loads, such as unladen articulated lorry trailers and train carriages, by raising the front of the trailer off its stands. This makes it quicker and easier for staff to conduct and complete routine maintenance and cleaning.

Bridgeview, Illinois-based lifting equipment rental specialist Lifting Gear Hire (LGH) is preparing to expand its fleet of Hydra-Slide equipment after a period of sustained utilization of its three 500 ton capacity HT500 heavy track skid systems and power units. The HT500 is one of the most cost-effective and accurate methods for moving, loading or unloading all types of heavy loads, including transformers, generators, compressors, pressure vessels, and other machines where a rigid, load carrying track is required. LGH also boasts three Hydra-Pac synchronous 10,000-psi hydraulic power units that provide synchronized control of multiple hydraulic cylinders. www.hydra-slide.com

This design concept provides a high level of flexibility for a wide array of applications and industries, including commercial and industrial warehousing, equipment and bulk material storage, and many more. Legacy fabric buildings utilize a durable rigid frame in place of the hollow-tube, open web truss “hoop” framing traditionally used for fabric structures. The strength of the structural steel frame provides several engineering advantages, most notably the ability to easily customize buildings to the exact width, length and height required. www.legacybuildingsolutions.com

Roura adds Gaylord rotator box for safe and efficient material handling Roura has announced the expansion of their product line with a Gaylord rotator box. The rotator, which securely holds large cardboard recycling boxes and their contents, turns the transport of an unwieldy and oversized corrugated box into a safe and efficient job for forklift operators. The addition is a testament to Roura’s longstanding commitment to safety and efficiency. Cardboard, corrugated boxes are used for a wide variety of purposes when handling industrial materials. Commonly leveraged to transport large volumes of recyclables, these boxes can become extremely heavy and hazardous to move. Using a rotator, workers are able to quickly and safely adjust, secure, and move industrial boxes and their contents. www.rouramh.com

CREAMER'S CORNER

Verify, verify and then verify! In the perpetually confusing world we live in today, it is, I believe, the customer who should also hold some responsibility to the correctness of the parts they order. So when I listen to an unobjective person complaining that the wrong brushes were sent I shuttered. And now he is in a dire place to which he requires the correct brushes immediately and noted this to me in the strongest words. I state, “of course I will attempt to help you, but you must give me all of the information and then we will see.” The situation is that he ordered the correct amount of brushes required for the machine to function, which was two pieces. However, he states that everything else is wrong, even the style of brush. Further, he goes on to tell me that he received some sort of flat brushes and he needs long tube type brushes. He states” I told them that I had a Nilfisk-Advance Model “2820 Adgressor” and needed two brushes.” And they sent them. I said, no, no, no that doesn’t sound right and I will explain why. First, you have to know whether the brushes are what I call #1 disc brush or #2 cylindrical brush. Also, I use the word brush because your machine is a scrubber. Remember brushes scrub and brooms sweep. So you want brushes. By your earlier statement of flat brushes received, it sounds as if you need the cylindrical brushes. However, secondly, I cannot tell you why someone would send you brushes just with the

info you provided. It is incomplete. It sounds as if you have been dealing with an inexperienced company and this is often what occurs. Your model should read either Adgressor 2820-D or Adgressor 2820-C. This is key to the information required because D means Disc and C represents Cylindrical. It is very simple but you have to have this knowledge. He stated that he has Adgressor 2820-C which I have already concluded “of course you do.” So we now have the answer, or do we? Well partly. We now know what type of brushes you need which are cylindrical, but what type of material do you want or do you know what you have been using? I don’t know exactly some type of grit they call it. Okay, we will figure this out as well. In order to decide, it must be determined what type of environment and/or floor surface you have. After a considerable lengthy conversation, it was determined that the floors were unsealed, uneven floors with steel shavings and particles flowing throughout the building also sometimes includes the warehouse area. In short, it is an older building with rough floors. I can relate to that and now let’s list what could be used in this situation. But we also want to decide the best choice for this particular situation. We see below three choices: Part # 56412193 .035”/ 180 Grit Part #56412194 .050”/ 80 Grit Part #56412195 .070”/ 46 Grit How would one determine the best brush for his environment. First we need a brush that is by far the most aggressive brush. We need this because the brush needs to hold up against the steel particles it is scrubbing. Steel is a very hard substance and could tear the bristle of the brush, hence cause brushes to breakdown quickly. So we then must say that the largest diameter bristle will stand the test of time. And which brush has the largest diameter bristle? It is the 46 grit #56412195. But you say you don’t understand why the smallest grit number (46) is the largest diameter. You see, I list the actual thickness as well which is .070” (seventy thousand of an inch is how it is said.) You wouldn’t think that twenty or even thirty-five thousand of an inch would not make such a substantial difference standing up to steel particles, but it does indeed. It also will break up the dirt and oil

32

CREAMER'S CORNER accompanying such particles. So you have your answer. Now to quickly define the two brush systems available for this Model 2820. First the 2820-D (disc brush system overview) This machine uses disc or aka: rotary brushes that are mounted next to each other. For maximum cleaning, the brushes rotate into one another meaning that one brush rotates counter-clockwise and the other clockwise. Each brush has a drive mechanism on top center of each brush which allows this rotation. Second the 2820-C (cylindrical brush system overview) For this machine it uses cylinder or tube type brushes. They are mounting one in front of the other. For this style, the drive motor is mounted to one end of each brush with an idler hub on the other to allow even scrubbing that is also adjustable. This type of brush is perfect for cleaning surfaces with cracks and unevenness. In closing, it should be noted that when one orders brushes always have the complete model and the serial number. The best way to ensure the reliability of ordering

the correct parts is to have your own parts manual and to look up the parts yourself. Once the brush material is determined best for you, write the part number in your parts manual or make a pdf file listing. If you haven’t yet decided your best brush option and are still testing different materials for your machine and environment , simply e-mail me. With my 42 years experience, together we should be able to correctly determine your best avenue. Thanks as always for reading. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber. INDUSTRY NEWS

MCFA/Jungheinrich® celebrate grand opening of ICOTEX facility Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America Inc. (MCFA) and Jungheinrich® Lift Truck Corp., celebrated the successful grand opening of a new joint venture, Industrial Components of Texas, LLC (ICOTEX®). Located at 3479 Pollok Dr. in Conroe, Texas, ICOTEX’s new 71,000-square-foot facility will manufacture industrial components. Nearly 200 attendees joined the grand opening celebration, including executives from Mitsubishi Nichiyu Forklift Co. Ltd., MCFA and Jungheinrich AG, as well as ICOTEX employees, town officials and other key colleagues and supporters. The event included a ribbon-cutting ceremony and facility tours, showcasing ICOTEX’s new state-of-the-art equipment used in the manufacturing process. The factory’s capabilities include

plasma cutting, bending, machining, welding, powder coating and more. ICOTEX is projected to employ approximately 80 people in the future, including manufacturing and office personnel. The facility will produce forklift components, which will be supplied to MCFA for use in MCFA’s Houston manufacturing plant. “The inauguration of our new ICOTEX facility is a significant milestone for both MCFA and Jungheinrich,” said Reinhild Kuehne, president of ICOTEX. “Both businesses have a long history of continuous improvement and customer focus along with a strong business relationship. This new facility will allow us to continue to deliver high-quality components while improving forklift manufacturing lead times for our customers.” The benefit is an uninterrupted supply of forklift components, and therefore faster production and delivery of forklifts built on MCFA’s Houston campus, just 50 miles from ICOTEX’s factory in Conroe. www.mcfa.com
