FEATURE ARTICLE

How can the material handling industry attract talent? Start at an early age. Cherie Shepard, Director of Packaging, Material Handling & Food Processing

Hiring and retaining skilled material handling, packaging and processing workers is top of mind for executives across most industries today. A recent article by Hunt Scanlon (www.huntscanlon.com/retaining-newhires-now-seen-critical-issue/) cited that 90% of executives surveyed stated that retaining new hires is an issue for their companies, while they also said that 10 to 25% of new hires leave within six months. With the increase in automation in various areas, this issue has become prevalent. On top of the challenges of hiring and retaining a skilled workforce, an EMSI forecast showed that about 22% of the 2015 tech labor pool will turn over by 2025 due to retirements and departures (DC Velocity article). A combination of retention issues, turnover, and a low number of recent graduates in the field is creating a need for all engineering disciplines. How can this be fixed? Companies across industries are working to find ways to introduce manufacturing to students early and encourage careers in the industry.

Getting students interested in technology needs to start at an early age. With the preconceived notions that all manufacturing floors are uncomfortable, unpleasant and dirty, teaching kids the dynamics of equipment and automation should help foster the idea of a technical future. From industry-related educational support, to internships, companies are leading the way to build the workforce of manufacturing. Hanel Storage Systems, a leader in the manufacture and integration of vertical storage units, donated an automated storage retrieval system (AS/RS), the RotomatÒ to Western Guilford High School in Greensboro, North Carolina. This equipment is used for education and demonstrations for the Logistics Education Department at the school and for students to learn about warehousing and supply chain management. In addition, Hanel also donated a RotomatÒ to the Vincennes University Logistics Training & Education Center in Plainfield, Indiana. This generous donation will help college students in Supply Chain Logistics Management to gain real-world experience with equipment and technology that today’s workforce is using, as well as hands-on experience. Both donations of the RotomatÒ were made through the Material Handling Industry (MHI), the largest association in the United States dedicated to the promotion and education of the material handling, logistics and supply chain industry. Angela Jenkins, Director, Career & Technical Education at Material Handling Industry (MHI) said, “Within my 2.5 year tenure at MHI, Hanel Storage Systems has donated equipment to 40+ high school and community colleges with material handling, logistics and supply chain programs. They continue to be a true example of industry-education partnership continuing to provide resources in building the workforce of today and tomorrow.” Jenkins also mentioned how Material Handling Industry (MHI) promotes the material handling, logistics, and supply chain industry to the younger generation in various ways. In addition to providing equipment for material handling, logistics and supply chain programs, Hanel along with other member companies provide resources and sponsorship at the Student Days Program for MHI’s MODEX and ProMat tradeshows. These tradeshows entail an average of 800+ exhibitors with a wide range of

technologies, which is opened to guided exploration for students and faculty participating in the program. Students Days is a two-day event which provides over 200 students from high schools, Community Colleges and Universities across the country the opportunity to meet with exhibitors on guided tours, learn about technology, network with industry experts and tour real world applications at local state-of-the-art facilities. Companies such as Hanel Storage Systems volunteer as an exhibitor tour location, provide a tour guide for the students and participate in target industry awareness programming for all student attendees. Hanel Storage Systems sponsors the network reception event at Student Days. This allows student attendees to interact one-on-one with industry representatives in a more conducive environment. Not only are companies making strides to attract young people to manufacturing through scholarships and educational donations, but some are offering internship programs. As an example, Bizerba, a leading solution provider for weighing, slicing and weigh-price-labeling technologies, offers an internship program annually. Bizerba provides interns with an overall look at their business operations, industry, and culture to the college students involved. In addition, interns are rotated through different departments to understand the entire business operation, gain practical experience and improved Remanufactured Transmissions, Engines, Torque Converters, Steer Axles, Overhaul Kits and Aftermarket Parts for: • Material Handling • Construction • Agricultural Equipment

understanding of the business mentality. Bizerba has found this program to be mutually beneficial to introduce the next generation of workers to their industry. Direct Recruiters, Inc. (DRI), an executive search firm specializing in Material Handling, Packaging, and Food Processing, has placed importance on encouraging young adults, specifically high school students to aim their career track towards getting jobs in these in-demand tech positions. DRI recently awarded a financial scholarship to a graduating Solon High School student planning to further his or her education towards the technical and engineering fields. Students were also required to have at least a 3.5 GPA and write an essay explaining why they chose the technical or engineering field. Cherie Shepard, Director of Material Handling, Packaging, & Food Processing for DRI said, “We introduced the idea of a scholarship to give back to the community and to focus on those with technical aspirations. While reading the essays by the high school students, we were amazed by their experiences. These 24 applicants are the future and they have the ability to change the world.” Another area of opportunity to introduce new talent to the Packaging, Material Handling, and Manufacturing industry is to provide flexible education options. The Packaging School, founded by Dr. Andrew Hurley, Professor of Packaging Science, Clemson University, was developed to provide specialized education to students in degree tracks outside of packaging. The Certificate of Packaging Science is an online program that breaks down the barriers to packaging education and lifts the veil on this vital and complex discipline. This is an excellent opportunity for companies to sponsor students and create apprenticeships geared towards engaging young talent. With a challenge in the current workforce landscape in Manufacturing and Material Handling, it is so important for companies to play their part in introducing new talent to the industry and growing the number of skilled workers.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Labelmaster celebrates 50th anniversary On April 16, 1947, in the Port of Texas City, Texas, the French vessel SS Grandcampe full of more than 2,000 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded, killing nearly 600 people and destroying more than 500 nearby homes. It remains the deadliest hazardous material accident in U.S. history and one of the largest non-nuclear explosions ever. When children of employees of Chicago-based Labelmaster participate in the company’s annual “Take your children to work day” this story is sometimes shared to explain – and emphasize – what the company does and the important products and services provided. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017, Labelmaster has been making the world a bit safer for a half-century by supporting companies that ship hazardous materials on land and sea, and through air. In the process, Labelmaster has emerged as an industry leader, its name synonymous with Dangerous Goods (DG) transport safety and compliance. “We occasionally share the Texas City story because it’s a dramatic way to tell our kids that what we do is important. I think we also tell it to remind ourselves that what we do really matters,” said Dwight Curtis, vice chairman and former president of Labelmaster. “If the right steps aren’t followed, problems can ensue. And sometimes those problems can have tragic consequences.” Founded in 1967 as Modular Products by entrepreneur Harry Fund, the company’s first products were labels for transportation companies. Fund saw the need for labels offering instructions on care and safe shipping after the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) released new regulations regarding the transportation of hazardous materials. Soon after, the company introduced placards for trucks stating that hazardous materials were onboard. “Our first products seem relatively obvious now,” says Alan Schoen, president of Labelmaster. “But back then, we were breaking new ground.” The placards were in such demand that Labelmaster was soon established as a trade name in 1970. That same year, it offered the Spacemaster 100, a flip placard system allowing trucks and tankers to easily display various signage indicating that dangerous goods were on board. The system, developed by Labelmaster engineer Abe Samuels, proved a critical help to first responders responding to accidents involving dangerous goods. After venturing into the commercial printing business 14

in 1991, the company spent the next nine years in the commercial printing industry while supporting companies that shipped dangerous and hazardous goods. It later acquired a company that provided OHSA, DOT and EPA regulatory information to customers electronically. “We sent our customers updates on floppy discs every quarter,” remembered Schoen. “This was before the rise of the internet. We were high-tech at the time!” In 1997, a large, recognizable delivery service approached Labelmaster seeking help and guidance. The shipping giant was finding it difficult to transport dangerous goods. Incidents and injuries forced the company to refuse any hazmat packages. In response, Labelmaster developed a revolutionary computerized system that verified and validated that packages complied with regulations. The system was perfected and eventually called Masterform. It proved to be a breakthrough product and was introduced in the company’s software product line in 1998. The following year, Labelmaster decided to sell the printing company and focus solely on the growing business of providing regulatory support to customers that shipped dangerous goods. In short, the company had decided to stick to its roots. “We saw where the future was,” says Schoen. “We knew the potential was there so we went in that direction fast and hard. We knew we could have an impact and make a difference.” Innovation and success followed. In 2002, Labelmaster introduced its Custom Express Website and in 2005, it established the industry’s first Dangerous Goods Symposium (DGS) for trainers’ in the industry. The conference has since grown from a handful of attendees to nearly 300. Featuring speakers, interactive training workshops and networking opportunities, attendees from around the world attend to learn about critical regulatory updates, participate in interactive training workshops and network with industry peers. In 2007, the company introduced Labelmaster Consulting Services, which helps customers understand and assess their complete product portfolio ensuring correct hazmat labeling so goods could move safely and efficiently. In 2009, Labelmaster raised the bar with the introduction of the Dangerous Goods Information System (DGIS), the industry’s most advanced and comprehensive

dangerous goods/hazmat shipping software. In addition to being certified FedEx DG ready, it integrates with ERP and shipping software systems to save time and keep customers compliant no matter where goods have to ship. The product, which integrates with SAP, is today the company’s primary electronic offering. “We’ve come a long way since our first labels,” said Schoen. “We’ve evolved as our industry has evolved. Innovation is – and always has been – the key. We’re always looking for new products and services that make DG shipping safer and new systems ensuring our customers’ shipments are compliant with the ever-changing rules and regulations. “We’re proud of our history and the impact we’ve had, and we’re excited about the future,” Schoen concluded. “The best, we believe, is yet to come.” Let Network work for you. TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Team building in the workplace Lucy DelSarto, TVH

A company’s most important asset is its employees. Thus, a successful organization focuses on finding the right people for the right position and assuring their engagement. A key aspect of this is team building across the organization. If you have never done team building, you may be wondering if it is worth the effort and time. Let me answer that with a resounding YES! Team building encourages communication, builds trust, mitigates conflict and increases collaboration. Effective team building means more engaged employees, which improves company culture and boosts the bottom line. In an effort to assist other companies on team building experiences, here are my top five guidelines: 1) lighten up and let laughter be part of the process; 2) break out of comfort zones with the blending of personalities, embracing diversity and trying new things; 3) include playful competition; 4) if possible, leave the office setting and consider volunteering; 5) inclusivity, give everyone an opportunity to be involved. At a recent off-site team building event, our marketing and advertising team participated in volunteering for a few hours at Harvester’s Food Bank in Kansas City. Harvesters is a regional food bank that provides food and related household products to non-profit agencies, including emergency food pantries, community kitchens, homeless shelters, children’s homes and others. Lyndi Jahellka shared her thoughts about the Harvester’s event, “I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to spend some time with my co-workers outside of the office setting. I loved how we all could come together, have fun and, best of all, make a difference in our community. We talked, laughed and added some friendly competition into the mix to see who could get to the bottom of their box first. In no time, we packaged over 1,000 lbs. of bulk onions during our short visit. It felt really good knowing that together we were able to accomplish something so meaningful to our community.” Another team building event included a group activity at Top Golf. "Being new to TVH, I never expected to have the opportunity to mingle with my fellow employees outside of work as a group. It was an awesome experience: playing golf, eating delicious food and enjoying refreshing 16

beverages with my department. I can't wait for future group activities." - Aaron Aguilar. Holidays provide an opportunity to blend work with fun as well. Every Halloween, TVH hosts an on-site department pumpkin challenge and costume contest. The atmosphere is filled with positive energy and creativity. SAFETY CORNER

Safety is a choice The longer I live, the more forklift safety classes I teach and the more accidents I see; I have come to realize that safety is a series of choices. We literally face hundreds or even thousands of different choices every day of our lives and many have nothing to do with safety. Most people probably go days, weeks or even months without ever giving a serious thought to safety decisions, but that does not mean that they are not still making safety related choices, they just don’t realize it. Some of the safety choices most people face might include: • Wearing their seatbelt in the car, forklift or lawn mower. • Wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle or ATV. • Using safety glasses when working in their shop, using a grass trimmer, etc. • Keeping hazardous materials such as cleaning solutions and prescription drugs locked up and away from children. • Driving the speed limit and stopping at red lights or stop signs.

Safe, Fast, Easy Forklift Maintenance Forklift Service & Maintenance Lifts

• Properly securing young children in safety car seats. • Keeping electrical appliances away form tubs, sinks, pools, etc. Just like in industry, if someone chooses not to do things the safe way there is not always someone there to force them into doing it correctly. Most people know the potential consequences of not doing these things, but many feel the chances of having to pay the price are so remote that they don’t really need to worry. The emergency rooms of the world are full of people that thought the same exact thing and turned out to be wrong! Whether you are at home, at work or operating a forklift you need to consider several things: 1) Realize you are making safety choices daily. 2) Understand the consequences of making the wrong choice and how it could impact you over a career or a lifetime. 3) Decide if you are willing to pay the price? In short, is the risk worth the reward. If I had to run into a burning house to save a family member, I would gladly take the risk, since the reward is very high. Is the benefit of saving a few seconds, but risking your life, worth not fastening your seatbelt? 4) If you are not willing to pay the price in terms of your health, your co-workers health or your family’s future, then choose the safe way and eliminate the risk. New Watchman Collision avoidance alarm bar There are an estimated 68,000 forklift accidents each year, many caused by collisions between forklifts and rollup doors, overhead equipment and lowhanging fixtures. The Watchman from Alvarado is an inexpensive, highly effective low clearance alarm bar that hangs in front of potential overhead collision areas in your warehouse or facility. On impact, it visually and audibly warns the forklift operator and management of an impending collision between the forklift and any overhead structure or fixture. Roll up doors, low overhead passageways, and virtually any overhead fixture such as pallet racks, lifts, walls, sprinklers, conveyors, catwalks and chemical lines all pose a potential collision hazard. www.alvaradomfg.com

CREAMER'S CORNER

Product training. It is essential! When you’re spending upwards of $40 or $50K for a new sweeper/scrubber, it is essential that the operator be trained properly. If anything else, at least for the safety aspect of it all. But you want the machine to perform to its utmost and that’s where product training comes into play. You want the floor to be their cleanest and done in the most-timely manner. That is where the training hits home. The operator is taught these things and more. How to recognize when the warning signs tell you that the detergent is getting low and the machine needs the clean water tank filled. You wouldn’t want an operator scrubbing the floor with an empty tank of detergent. You say Mike, that sounds silly. I have seen it happen. I know today, there are all kinds of warning lights and buttons for this or buttons for that. So, the operator has to be aware of the meaning of these. In years past, when there was the Tennant Sweeper 265, the machine was very simple and only had levers to control the functions of the machine. There was: 1. A lever for the main broom to lower it into position. NOW THERE ARE

2. A lever for the side(curb) broom to lower it into position. 3. And a lever for the hydraulics to begin these brooms sweeping. And that was pretty much all the operator had to worry about. But today, particularly when we are talking about sweeper/ scrubbers such as the American-Lincoln Model 7765, there are a whole host of things to control and be aware. Think about this fact: on a sweeper/scrubber there are some eight hydraulic pumps and/or motors. They are side broom motors, main broom motors, at least three sometimes four rotary scrub brush motors, main hydraulic pumps, pony pumps and finally the hopper vacuum motor. The operator must be taught about the controls of all of these items and their functions. On the Model 7760 alone, there are some 37 controls, gauges and/or switches to watch while operating this machine. This is all while you are driving forward sweeping and scrubbing the floor, while watching for obstacles and sometimes your fellow workers. And yes, accidents can occur and do occur, sometimes serious ones. This is not funny when you see a machine operator run off the dock and get seriously injured because he wasn’t paying attention and got too close. Just to sit in the seat of this sweeper/scrubber can be overwhelming to look at all the instruments. Just to list a few: brush rotation switch, squeegee switch, scrub brush lift switch, brush pressure switch, high recovery warning light, low solution warning light, recycling system switch, detergent low light, and many, many others. I listed eight of these and to think there are 29 more to monitor. WOW! So you will want to get the operator trained properly before just throwing him or her onto these machines. Where can you get this training done? All the OEM’s offer some type of training, but many of the machine dealers offer this service as well. I appreciate you following my articles every month. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber. For your comments or questions, please e-mail Mike at editorial@mhnetwork.com.
