FEATURE ARTICLE

Warehouse safety essentials: Pallet rack drop pin Wholesale Pallet Rack Products

As of 2017, the Public Storage and Warehousing industry is one that employs over 600,000 people and brings in $22 billion in revenue. And that doesn’t include the countless warehouses that belong to companies shipping their own tangible products. This means, among many other things, that there’s a massive amount of product movement within warehouses and fulfillment centers every day. Ultimately, this also spells more risk of commonplace accidents unless warehouse safety best practices are observed. Some warehouse safety measures consume a lot of time, energy and money to implement. Others are fast, easy and relatively cost-effective. As part of our WPRP University series, this article will cover a small but important aspect of warehouse storage that everyone in material handling or warehousing should be familiar with. It’s a topic that understandably is overlooked, but is crucial to the safety

of a warehouse. We’re talking about what RMI refers to as beam connector locking devices. Others may simply know them as pallet rack clips, beam clips, drop pins, j bolts, or a wide variety of other names. We’re going to cover why these small parts are a necessity and not an accessory, when they’re needed and when they’re not, and arm you with information you can use to make your customer’s or your warehouse a safer place. Pallet rack beam clips and warehouse safety Let’s first take a step back. What are we referring to when we mention pallet rack safety pins? What are they, and why is there a need for them in the first place? For our purposes, beam connector locking device refers to a component that keeps pallet rack beams engaged in the upright frame column. This is a necessary feature because of the way pallet rack is designed to hold together. In most cases, pins on the connecting portion, or ear of the beam are inserted into slots in the upright frames. Here they’re held in place by a combination of gravity and friction from the upright frame. However, neither gravity nor friction are strong enough counteract the upward force of a lift truck. The hydraulic mechanisms of modern lift trucks can easily move thousands of pounds. In many cases, this means that a simple miscalculation or equipment misfire could dislodge an entire beam level and its contents, threatening the safety of any personnel in the area and likely damaging the product in the process. This is why ANSI/RMI MH 16.1 Section 5.4.2 specifies that all beams should have a locking device capable of resisting an upward force of at least 1,000 pounds. Built in pallet rack beam safety clips Many manufacturers took notice of the need for locking pins over the years, and began manufacturing racking with locking pins built in. This advent removes the need for end users to purchase and install locking pins separately, as the pin locks the beam into place upon installation. Where users often run into trouble is with pallet racking that’s purchased in used condition or beams whose clips have been sheered off. As a material handling company, we’ve heard firsthand accounts of rack accidents involving beam disengagement,

and they often result in the end user rushing to find a solution that will prevent it from happening again. The solution we usually suggest is to install Universal Drop Pins on all pallet rack beams without locking pins. The universal pallet rack drop pin One of the reasons we recommend using the Universal Pallet Rack Drop Pin is in its name: it fits virtually all pallet rack brands that have 3/8” aligning holes on the beam-to-frame connection. Not only does it work well for a wide variety of different brands, but it’s easy to install. As we show in our video demonstrating how to install the Universal Pallet Rack Drop Pin, it’s as easy as dropping the pin through the correct slots. Often times when tearing down pallet rack or re-slotting beams at different elevations, the safety clips are bent backwards or sheered off, unable to function properly when the beam is finally reinstalled. This is one of the most common situations in which the Universal Drop Pin comes in handy. If you’re purchasing a warehouse full of used racking and using or reselling it, why not play it safe and install drop pins on beams that have broken or missing clips? Once in place, the drop pin will keep beams secured in the upright frame, even in the event of upward force. Drop pins are also coated in a rust and corrosion-resistant zinc plating, an important feature if the racking is exposed to the elements. How to ensure beams are secured It’s important to actively maintain warehouse safety, and part of that process is making sure cross beams are securely engaged in frame columns. If the beams have built in locking pins, make a note during regular rack inspections to check the safety locking pin. If it’s been removed, a replacement clip or Universal Pallet Rack Drop Pin should be installed. When ordering used pallet racking, order enough safety pins to secure each beam. Because of their utility and the impact they have on warehouse safety, we include drop pins with every used pallet rack purchase, free of cost. Remember to give us a call or email us to learn more this topic and other safety products. Our goal is to help you, so let us know if there’s information you’d like to see featured in our blog, website, or emails! Today’s warehouse fire protection systems include more than just pipes and sprinklers. When the products being stored include highly flammable items such as plastics, aerosols, liquors or oils, fire baffles or barriers may be required inside the racking structure. Solid steel rack decking and flat sheet accessories from DACS make effective fire or heat baffles in warehouse environments. They can be used on storage racks horizontally or vertically to block the spread of fire, or to capture heat for in-rack sprinkler activation.

create a compelling value proposition in our products and services. Whether it is an expense item or a capital investment, all of our products and services have to stand on their own merit; that’s how we have been able to build our brand over time. People know the Magline name and customers trust our products for durability, reliability and quality they can count on. The company maintained its position as industry leader for over 70 years by working on transport solutions for industries that require daily transportation of products, like beer, soft drink, food service and parcel. Over the years, customers began referring to our products as Magliners to the point that eventually “Magliner” became the term used synonymously for hand truck. Magliner products are available globally through our network of dealers and industrial catalog partners. Magline is proud to be a Michigan company with a local workforce competing on a global scale. We set ourselves apart from others in our industry by how intently we listen. Magline works frequently with clients and endusers to provide unique solutions to individual application challenges. We listen to business issues, conduct onsite process observational work and interview employees across the supply chain, develop product concepts and deliver prototypes for consideration. With the customers input, we refine the product and move into production. While carts for route distribution will remain our core product theme, we will continue to branch out into several different markets with different types of product for respective applications. We have introduced delivery systems such as CooLift® and transportable lifting equipment like the LiftPlus® for industrial and manufacturing markets. Safety and ergonomics is becoming increasingly important in the supply chain, so power assisted products may become more prominent in buying decisions with our customers. The past 70 years have been a whirlwind of growth, expansion and innovation. We look forward to strengthening the relationships we already have, and building new relationships as material handling requirements evolve. www.magliner.com

TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Lifting up Lucy DelSarto, TVH

With 1000 employees in the Americas, we want to make sure everyone feels like they are part of the team and the family. Throughout the year, we offer a variety of programs, activities and treats to show we appreciate our people. As part of our upcoming initiatives, We Are One, our employee program that focuses on promoting the core values, provides a turkey and ham to all employees during the holiday season. We also have TVH Cares, our volunteer program that gives employees one paid volunteer day off each year to give back to the community. TVH One recognizes an employee each month who goes above and beyond. Nominations are made by co-workers and the nominee gets several gifts and the department gets a pizza party. Creating an inviting work atmosphere includes the physical surroundings, as well as social and psychological components. A Gallup poll identified 12 core elements linked to employee engagement. The survey is based on more than 30 years of in-depth behavioral economic research involving millions of employees. A few questions emphasizing empowering and supporting others included: • In the last seven days, have you received recognition or praise for doing good work? • At work, do your opinions matter? • Is there someone at work who encourages your development? • Does your supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about you as a person? • Do you have a best friend at work? An “engaged employee” is defined as one who is fully absorbed by and enthusiastic about their work and thus takes positive action to further the organization’s reputation and interest. There are several ways to create employee engagement. Recently TVH CEO Els Thermote, purchased tickets for an annual woman’s event, LIV (Live In Vitality) a Health and Wellness Conference held in Overland Park, KS. She invited the top 10 female participants in TVH’s Nudge Health and Wellness Program for a full day of learning how to enhance your health and well-being. Employee Robin Kresin shared, “I feel so fortunate to work at TVH because the ownership truly embraces 16

the wellness culture and go above and beyond to care for the employees on so many levels. Attending the LIV Conference was fun and educational.” If you want change, be the change. There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up. Every day there are opportunities to make someone’s day. SAFETY CORNER

Practice operation is not a step that can be skipped No matter what country you reside in or what vehicle you operate, there are some universal parts to any vehicle safety training. These parts are not difficult to complete, but they must all be done well and taken seriously. P Classroom instruction or formalized learning P Practice operation under direct supervision and in a safe area P Hands on evaluation of operating skills P Periodic re-evaluation P Enforcement of the rules for safe operation Let’s take a closer look at one part; practice operation. When companies train people to run production equipment, how long do they typically spend ensuring the employee is properly trained? I know many companies that spend several days to several months teaching their people the finer points of how to run production equipment so they can do it efficiently, safely and productively. They fully understand that tossing someone on a machine tool with little to no practice is a recipe for damaging the machine, running endless scrap and maybe injuring the worker; so they would never think of doing it. I have seen the same companies take a new person, show them a short video (not a good way to fulfill the classroom requirement, by the way) and put them on a forklift with little to no practice time with a warning not to “Do anything stupid.” What they are saying is the company expects them to learn on their own, hoping they don’t injure themselves or someone else in the process. What if we had the same attitude towards practice for trainees becoming doctors, airline pilots, over the road truck drivers? Pretty scary when you look at it that way, isn’t it? Especially when you figure forklifts, even small ones, weigh about 10,000 pounds and carry two sharpened spears up front. What is the solution to this problem? Two things, sufficient time allotment and the right trainers/mentors. Companies must include sufficient time 18

between hiring people and putting them into production on a forklift, allowing for sufficient practice time to get them safely up to speed. The exact time frame will depend on many factors including any prior experience, type of forklifts used, application, coordination of the operator, etc. Second, is getting the right folks to work with our new people. Traits for people providing practice operation to forklift trainees should include: P They must be skilled on the equipment they are training others to use. P They must be familiar with the application, loads and facility rules. P They need to be properly trained as a trainer/mentor. P They must believe in the value of what they are doing. P They must take the time to do things correctly/safely every time. P They must care about their co-workers. P They must take pride in helping others better themselves. P They must feel comfortable providing honest feedback. P They must have lots of patience. As you can see, finding the right people will not be cheap or easy, but it will be worth it when you are turning out well trained and productive forklift operators. Camso purchases Stanley Industrial Tires

Robotic Industries Association announces new alliance with Camso continues to grow its tire service and distribution OSHA, NIOSH

presence in Texas and Louisiana with the acquisition of Stanley Industrial Tires. With a strong and dedicated team of tire specialists and service technicians in three locations in Texas (Dallas, Waco, and Gladewater) and one in Louisiana (Shreveport), Stanley Industrial Tires is a great addition to Camso’s existing footprint. “By teaming up with local players in the region we can broaden our offering and provide customers with top notch, tailor-made tire fill and replacement solutions as well as high performance products from our Camso and Solideal Tire product lines,” says Bob Bulger, VicePresident and General Manager, Solideal On-Site Service in North America. “Being one of the few full-solution providers in off-the-road mobility makes us unique. It differentiates us from our competitors and supports rapid growth in this market,” adds Bulger. Texas is home to the second largest Material Handling equipment market after California in the U.S. Earlier in July, the company made a similar move to further grow its presence when they teamed up with Omni Industrial Tire. Camso, through its Solideal On-Site Service division, is committed to expanding its footprint to bring the most innovative tire solutions to the Material Handling and Compact Construction Markets. “We are 100% behind our equipment dealer, OEA and tire dealer partners, ensuring we help them grow their business profitably while providing best-in-industry solutions to our customers,” says Bulger. www.camso.co

The Robotic Industries Association (RIA), North America’s robotics trade group, signed an alliance partnership with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). OSHA has established alliances with a number of industry groups to share expertise and knowledge about safety practices in the industries involved. The OSHA/NIOSH/RIA Alliance will focus on communication and education about best practices in robot safety. The goals of the OSHA/NIOSH/RIA Alliance are enhancing technical expertise about robotics within OSHA and NIOSH; improving awareness of workplace hazards associated with traditional industrial robots and the emerging technology of human robot collaboration (HRC) installations and systems; and identifying research that may be needed to help reduce workplace hazards. “The robotics industry has a great track record of safety dating back to 1961 when the first industrial robot was installed,” said Carole Franklin, Director of Standards Development, RIA. “We’re trying to make sure every integrator and user of robotics in the country is aware of the best practices described in our R15.06 standard. This new partnership with OSHA and NIOSH will certainly help us in that effort.” The Alliance will foster technical exchange and information sharing among RIA members, OSHA, NIOSH, employers, and workers concerning hazards that may be present around industrial robot systems. It will also facilitate the sharing of information about how best to control exposure to such hazards during operations involving human interaction with the robotic systems in workplaces. Alliance participants will collaborate to develop technical training, resources, and tools for OSHA staff, NIOSH researchers, employers, and workers. www.robotics.org

KION North America announces changes to dealer network

In recent months, KION North America Corporation has made several changes to its nationwide sales and service dealer network for material handling equipment. To improve their sales and service presence in the north central region, KION North America appointed Lift Parts Service in July. Located in Wichita, Kansas, Lift Parts Service was founded in 1962 and continues to be family owned and operated. Now in their third generation of ownership, they are the oldest lift truck company in the state and will serve customers in 79 counties. “KION North America’s plans for the future aligned with many of the same goals we have set for our company,” said Kyle Free, chief operating officer of Lift Parts Service. “By partnering with one of the world’s leading lift truck manufacturers, their product lines will open opportunities in markets that we were not able to compete in previously.” Existing KION North America distributor, HOJ Engineering & Sales, recently relocated their corporate headquarters to Salt Lake City. In August, their territory was realigned. They will provide sales and service support to customers throughout Utah and select counties in southwest Wyoming. In September, KION North America also appointed Sierra Industrial Equipment as an authorized dealer to serve the eastern half of Nevada—an area previously not covered by their distribution network. They are the largest independent forklift service provider in the Las Vegas Valley. www.kion-na.com

Toyota announces promotions within national management teams

Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A. (TMHU) announced the promotions of Tom Lego and Scott Redelman to their national management teams this summer. Tom Lego has been promoted to national manager of training and the customer center, where he will spearhead all TMHU training initiatives and oversee the Customer Center. In addition to his role with Toyota Lean Management, Redelman will lead the development of an internal lean management training program. Redelman joined TIEM in 1996 as a specialist in production control before his most recent position as senior manager of production control and logistics. www.toyotaforklifts.com

Diversified Plastics Inc. announces acquisition of Atlanta Rotomolding Inc.

Diversified Plastics Inc., an international rotational molder based out of Latta, South Carolina, announces its acquisition of Atlanta Rotomolding Inc. Just last year, Diversified Plastics Inc. (also known as DPI) added a second location, in Union Point, GA. That location was added due to the company expanding their business to manufacturing large waste dumpsters and recycling containers. Now, DPI makes the dumpsters and recycling containers in a variety of sizes, such as 2 yards, 4 yards, 6 yards, and 8 yards. This expansion came with a 35,000-square-foot space, but now they've gotten even bigger. Equipment from Atlanta Rotomolding Inc. will move from Decatur, Georgia to Union Point, in a 15,000-square-foot building. This acquisition comes from DPI’s plans to expand to more custom rotational molding for their customers. While Diversified Plastics has offered custom rotomolding work for their customers for years, this expansion also allows DPI to expand manufacturing rotomolding products for other firms more efficiently, and provide better service. With more equipment, the larger, 35,000-square-foot facility will be used for manufacturing and production of new rotomolding products, while the 15,000-square-foot facility will be used for shipping and storage. www.dpiroto.com

CREAMER'S CORNER

The replacement of rear squeegee blades Replacing rear squeegee blades on scrubbers and/or sweeper scrubbers isn’t that difficult if you stay within the procedure guidelines. If we are discussing AmericanLincoln, PowerBoss, Windsor or Karcher the procedure is generally the same or at least similarly close enough to follow from machine to machine. I also would conclude that the walk-behind scrubber’s instructions for replacement of squeegee blades could also be adapted for use on a rider scrubber. So, I would call these my universal instructions for such a service procedure. So let’s begin this procedure. 1. First, I would mention to examine the existing blades on the machine for damage such as tears or rips in these blades. What this does is to allow the dirty water debris to flow through the blades out the back of the machine. You can notice this event by occurring water streaks when the machine is in scrubbing motion. These streaks can be very dangerous to the surrounding workers and can result in a fall or a collision with another vehicle such as a forklift or personal carrier. So now we have determined that the blades need to be replaced. 2. For safety, before servicing the machine, stop on level floor, set parking brake and turn off the machine. 3. Disconnect the rear vacuum hose that is connected to the rear squeegee assembly. 4. Remove both mounting knobs that hold the squeegee assembly in place. 5. Turn on the machine and raise the squeegee assembly. Now turn off the machine. 6. Now remove the squeegee assembly. This should be as easy as lifting up and out away from the machine. 7. Once the squeegee assembly is off the machine, you will want to lift it to some type of work table for easy disassemble. 8. Loosen the rear squeegee retainer band tension latch and open the retaining band. 9. Remove the rear squeegee.

32

November 2017

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

10. Install the new rear squeegee blade. When installing, make sure all of the holes or slots in the squeegee are over the pins or tangs on the squeegee frame. 11. Tighten the rear retaining band tension latch. 12. Loosen the front retainer band latch as you did the rear and open the retaining band. 13. Remove the front squeegee blade. 14. Again, remember to match the hole or slot on the blade to the pin or tang on the rear squeegee frame. 15. Install the new front squeegee blade. 16. Reattach the band and tighten it with the tension of the latch. 17. Reinstall the squeegee assembly back onto the machine. You are now finished with this installation. To keep up with the maintenance of these, they should be checked daily for wear and tear after using the machine. Replace as required. The side squeegees are the same process as the rear and should also be checked at the same time. One thing we haven’t discussed is the type of squeegee blade you are using. You may not be satisfied with the wear of the squeegee or pick-up of the dirty water of your scrubber. There are four basic squeegee materials being used today by many of the scrubber OEM’s. They are tan gum rubber, Linatex®, neoprene and urethane. These materials have specific applications so you may be using the wrong material for your application. You may need a squeegee check-up and I can help with that. You can e-mail me with your situation and we can discuss your options. I hope you have learned something new today and, as always, thank you for reading. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber. For your comments or questions, please e-mail Mike at editorial@mhnetwork.com.
