BUSINESS PROFILE

Parker Hannifin’s 100-year journey

Parker Hannifin is a Fortune 250 global leader in motion and control technologies. Arthur Parker established the Parker Appliance Company on March 13, 1917 in a small loft in Cleveland, Ohio, along with his business partner Karl Clamm. He was a passionate engineer who was driven to improve the operation of complex systems and understood the importance of a culture that combined family and fairness with innovation and determination. The first patent issued in Art’s name details a hydraulic device which regulates the speed of electric generators. In the century since, the company has been granted more than 8,000 patents, helping to set the pace of technological innovation in a wide range of diversified industrial and

aerospace markets, including life sciences, oil and gas, construction and agriculture. Traveling to a trade show in 1919, a trailer carrying the company’s entire inventory fell off a cliff east of Pittsburgh. Art was determined to rebuild. He restarted the company in 1924 with a new patent for a two-piece flared tube fitting. In 1927, Parker’s fuel system is on board the Spirit of St. Louis as Charles Lindbergh completes the first transatlantic flight. With 40 patents and sales of $3 million in 1939, Parker responded to the country’s call to arms by focusing on just one customer—the U.S. government. During World War II, Parker grew from 910 employees in 1940 to 2,600 in 1941. Sales increased 700%. Art Parker died suddenly on New Year’s Day in 1945. To keep the company running when the war ended, Helen Parker reinvested the proceeds from Art’s $1 million life insurance policy back into the company. She hired new management and together they decided to diversify. In 1957, Parker acquires the Hannifin Company, manufacturer of cylinders and valves, expanding their offering to include all of the components of a fluid power system. Parker’s stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange for the first time in 1964 and two years later, Parker is named to the Fortune 500. Art Parker’s son Pat becomes the company president in 1969 as the company begins its support of every U.S. space mission, including the historic Apollo 11 moon landing. In 1972, the Parflex Division is established in Ravenna, Ohio, to focus on thermoplastic hose manufacturing for extreme applications in existing and emerging markets, including but definitely not limited to over-the-sheave hoses. After a decade of strategic global growth, Parker reaches sales of $1 billion in 1980. The company grows to serve customers in 120 countries by 1993. After more than 60 years of operation at the former Hupp Automobile Plant, Parker moves its global headquarters to Mayfield Heights, Ohio, on the east side of Cleveland in 1997. Marking 100 years in 2017, Parker has a presence in 50 countries with approximately 50,000 team members, 400,000 customers, 800,000 products and annual sales over $12 billion. www.parker.com

HOW-TO

How to protect people and pallet rack from forklift damage If you look at the OSHA literature on warehousing, it’s not surprising to see startling statistics. OSHA’s job is to encourage American businesses to create safer workplaces for employees. But there is one point in particular that’s worth noticing: warehousing has a higher than average fatal injury rate. With more and more jobs being held in offices and away from real danger, this may not be breaking news. Still, it’s clear there’s still plenty of work to be done when it comes to preventing injuries. So what can we start doing now to improve workplace safety for warehouse personnel? The most obvious answer to the question of how to make warehouses a safer place to work is to build a culture of safety. A culture of safety encompasses everything from education to training, attitudes to procedures. A culture of safety is the foundation on which everything else sits. And there’s no better time than now to focus on safety and start getting serious about creating a culture where safety is the norm. That’s why we’re taking these final months of 2017 to zero in on warehouse safety and work towards a more accident-free 2018. Building a culture of safety is a process that can’t be executed overnight. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things you can do right now to help you or your client onto the right track. One of these things is making sure the warehouse has the appropriate safety products in place to prevent accidents in high risk areas. These areas typically include high forklift traffic zones, end-of-aisle areas, and in-plant offices or other areas with a significant presence of personnel. In this article, we’ll take a look at three products that are designed to protect people and pallet racking from coming into contact with lift trucks during daily operations. Guardrail The most frequently cited OSHA violations are those related to forklifts. Of course, forklifts usually don’t pose a threat by themselves. It’s driving a forklift that can be dangerous, and usually the driver is the one most exposed to risk. But forklifts can also be hazardous to surrounding workers, especially if both parties aren’t aware of the other’s presence. In the warehouse, guardrail makes it clear for lift truck operators which areas are traffic lanes and which areas 10

are off limits. And it’s not just forklifts that warehouse guardrail systems protect against. They also keep people and equipment safe from floor scrubbers, pallet jacks, and other heavy equipment with the potential to do damage or pose a safety risk. End of aisle protectors Pallet rack and the inventory it’s designed to store are both valuable investments. Like any investment, we all want to do what we can to make sure it pays off down the road. In the warehouse, one of the simplest ways to protect pallet storage equipment is to install end-of-aisle protectors. End-of-aisle guarding is especially important because it tends to fend off collisions in high-traffic areas of the warehouse. At the ends of pallet rack rows, forklifts may be going faster and turning tighter than in other areas, increasing the chances of an expensive and dangerous collision. Endof-aisle protectors work as bumpers, deflecting oncoming traffic away from the racking and keeping people and the system itself safer. Column protectors For organizations with a focus on safety, pallet rack column protectors are just as important as the ones commonly found on structural building columns. Just like a building’s structural columns, pallet rack columns can be damaged and weakened by collisions from forklifts. When the forged steel tines impact the upright column, the hollow upright is easily dented. These dents range from minor cosmetic damage to serious damage that causes loss of capacity. And when an upright is damaged enough to be rendered unusable, it’s usually as expensive and more difficult to repair it than to just replace it. Basic column protectors are a relatively easy and inexpensive way to prolong the life of upright frames. Pallet rack column protectors often bolt to the floor, but there are also models that clasp to the upright itself, saving installation time and eliminating the need to drill into the concrete floor. Building a culture of warehouse safety Emphasizing safety and holding an organization’s leadership and personnel accountable for high safety standards are the bedrock of building a culture of safety in the warehouse. It’s no small change, but it’s one that pays

SUPERIOR ROLL HANDLER This modification allows the customer to handle large diameter reels or rolls without the fear of the unit rolling or damaging the product.

Modifications made to the truck include widening the forks to accept the roll or reel, adding the angles to the fork to cradle the load perfectly and reinforcing the linkage, battery compartment and the overall construction of the pallet truck.

off over the long run. While many of the tasks that go into building a culture of safety are focused on education and organizational values, there are at least a few actions you or your client can take right now. One of those is to ensure basic protective equipment is installed. When combined with safety best practices, installing protective equipment can dramatically increase safety in virtually no time.

FEATURE STORY

Employee safety in winter hazards Workers face a variety of cold weather hazards, including cold stress and its physical consequences. But cold stress is not the only hazard that workers face during the winter months. Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, winter driving, shoveling snow, working at heights while clearing snow, and walking safely on snow and ice are all additional concerns during this time of year. Carbon monoxide poisoning According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 400 people per year die in the United States from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. After winter storms or other major natural disasters cause power outages, alternative sources of fuel or electricity for heating, cooling, cooking, or working can cause CO to build up in living/working quarters and create a hazardous environment. Vehicles idling in garages can also cause dangerous levels of CO to build up, as can portable heaters that use fuels such as kerosene. Tools which produce combustion fumes such as small gasoline engines, stoves, generators, and lanterns all generate CO.

As a result, it is vital to ensure these sources are ventilated out and are not enclosed in spaces. It is imperative to be able to recognize the symptoms of CO poisoning and understand how to prevent it. CO is an odorless and colorless gas that can cause sudden illness and death if inhaled, creating a dangerous, unsuspected hazard that is easy to overlook. The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. Carbon monoxide poisoning requires immediate evacuation from the area and emergency medical attention. Winter driving Driving in the winter can mean dealing with wet, slippery roads, limited visibility, and fewer daylight hours. Black ice, snow squalls, and whiteout conditions can pop up with very little warning, causing increased danger for vehicles and pedestrians alike. Drivers should be trained on defensive driving techniques and learn how to contend with winter driving hazards like skids and fishtails. Those travelling long distances or in lightly-populated zones should consider using reliable communication channels such as CB radio, and keep extra blankets and provisions on hand in case of accident or stranding. Snow hazards Clearing away a fresh coat of snow can be a dangerous endeavor. Falls are likely in slippery conditions, as are lower back and other musculoskeletal injuries while shoveling heavy snow. Clearing roofs and other overhangs can be dangerous for those at heights and for those who might be struck by falling ice and snow. Some workers might even face the risk of a cardiac event due to exertion. Workers should be careful to use proper techniques and protective equipment, and take frequent breaks as necessary. Stay safe Understanding the hazards that are associated with the winter months and implementing precautions can help prevent injury and save lives. Awareness, preparation, and proper training are essential when combating not only cold stress and other winter conditions, but any workplace hazard that organizations face.. SAFETY CORNER

Practice operation is not a step that can be skipped No matter what country you reside in or what vehicle you operate, there are some universal parts to any vehicle safety training. These parts are not difficult to complete, but they must all be done well and taken seriously. P Classroom instruction or formalized learning P Practice operation under direct supervision and in a safe area P Hands on evaluation of operating skills P Periodic re-evaluation P Enforcement of the rules for safe operation Let’s take a closer look at one part; practice operation. When companies train people to run production equipment, how long do they typically spend ensuring the employee is properly trained? I know many companies that spend several days to several months teaching their people the finer points of how to run production equipment so they can do it efficiently, safely and productively. They fully understand that tossing someone on a machine tool with little to no practice is a recipe for damaging the machine, running endless scrap and maybe injuring the worker; so they would never think of doing it. I have seen the same companies take a new person, show them a short video (not a good way to fulfill the classroom requirement, by the way) and put them on a forklift with little to no practice time with a warning not to “Do anything stupid.” What they are saying is the company expects them to learn on their own, hoping they don’t injure themselves or someone else in the process. What if we had the same attitude towards practice for trainees becoming doctors, airline pilots, over the road truck drivers? Pretty scary when you look at it that way, isn’t it? Especially when you figure forklifts, even small ones, weigh about 10,000 pounds and carry two sharpened spears up front. What is the solution to this problem? Two things, sufficient time allotment and the right trainers/mentors. Companies must include sufficient time 16

December 2017

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

between hiring people and putting them into production on a forklift, allowing for sufficient practice time to get them safely up to speed. The exact time frame will depend on many factors including any prior experience, type of forklifts used, application, coordination of the operator, etc. Second, is getting the right folks to work with our new people. Traits for people providing practice operation to forklift trainees should include: P They must be skilled on the equipment they are training others to use. P They must be familiar with the application, loads and facility rules. P They need to be properly trained as a trainer/mentor. P They must believe in the value of what they are doing. P They must take the time to do things correctly/safely every time. P They must care about their co-workers. P They must take pride in helping others better themselves. P They must feel comfortable providing honest feedback. P They must have lots of patience. As you can see, finding the right people will not be cheap or easy, but it will be worth it when you are turning out well trained and productive forklift operators. Hyster Company plans for the future

The trend of declining breakbulk and project cargo volumes is continuing in 2017, fueled by lower commodity prices and competition from container ship carriers that have to expand services due to overcapacities and low shipping rates. “Add the rising complexity of breakbulk cargo, and you find breakbulk operators looking to stay afloat in a very competitive market,” explains Brett Schemerhorn, president Big Trucks for Hyster Company. The right lift truck for heavy loads When it comes to moving traditional breakbulk such as steel or lumber, terminal operators are looking for material handling equipment to efficiently handle a variety of different load types and sizes, at as little cost as possible. “We are very familiar with the steel and lumber industries on the manufacturing side,” says Schemerhorn, “and we apply that knowledge to help cargo shippers and terminal operators maximize productivity and minimize cost.” One way to make the most of one’s budget and improve productivity is to ensure that your lift truck is able to support many different types of cargo, even if that means different front end solutions are required. The Hyster® H700HD with a coil ram will be on exhibit at Breakbulk Americas 2017 as an example of a flexible solution. The innovative carriage design allows the QD-type mounted coil ram to hook directly onto the shaft without any alterations or adapters needed. Schemerhorn adds that, “the exchange between forks and the coil ram is easy and fast, enabling operators to switch the truck’s front end and get it back to work on different cargo quickly. This exchange improves productivity and saves money.” Efficiency of connected machines Earlier this year, Hyster Company revealed product changes that are aimed at supporting the port and 30

intermodal industry. “We are now incorporating Hyster Tracker into every Big Truck and container handler sold in the US, Canada, and Latin America, excluding Brazil. Hyster Tracker helps terminal operators monitor key performance indicators such as lift truck utilization, fuel consumption and service updates via a user-friendly portal, anytime, anywhere,” says Schemerhorn. Included features such as fault code monitoring and impact sensing mean that repairs and maintenance can be handled effectively, while GPS tracking, hour meters and truck use reporting can provide information to help improve productivity and processes, including yard layouts. The package can be upgraded to include wireless verification (access control for operators, truck shutdown when unattended or not in operation, and operator pre-shift checklists) for an additional fee. Hyster Tracker comes with a 60-month data plan at no additional cost for the customer. Zero Emission Big Electric Trucks Terminals that are looking to reduce their carbon footprint and total cost of ownership can visit Hyster at this year’s Breakbulk Show in Houston to learn about the zero-emission loaded container handler truck currently under development at the Hyster global design center. “A modular approach gives customers choices when it comes to selecting the best zero-emission solutions for their operations,” explains Jan Willem van den Brand, director Big Truck Product Strategy and Solutions for Hyster Company. To achieve the lowest total cost of ownership, the most suitable power option will depend on the requirements of the specific operation – application and infrastructure. Van den Brand adds “for example, an electric truck with a large battery pack and conventional charging may suit some customer needs. In other cases, more frequent ‘opportunity charging’ will be needed, and different methods of charging might be in order, such as wireless opportunity charging.” "Hyster Company’s current development of the wireless opportunity charging solution will be the first time that wireless charging has been used in this way,” says van den Brand. With the development of the new range of Hyster® Big Electric Trucks, a notable reduction in energy costs is expected. Servicing and maintenance costs are also projected to be considerably reduced in switching from diesel combustion to an electric powertrain, with lithium-ion batteries providing zero-maintenance energy storage. www.hyster.com

TVH HEALTH NUDGE

A nudge in the right direction Lucy DelSarto, TVH

The holiday season has begun and making healthy choices can become more of a challenge. People often wait until January 1st to make change in the form of New Year’s Resolutions, only to find themselves back to their old routines by the end of the month. It’s not really about what you do between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, rather it’s what you do from New Year’s to Thanksgiving that truly impact your health and well-being. The best day to start pursuing a healthy lifestyle is today. Stay focused, set priorities, plan ahead, expect distractions and detours, but learn to persevere from what could easily become excuses. Also, be mindful of selftalk. Self-defeating thinking patterns can diminish your willpower and your new efforts. Retrain your way of thinking to include positive energy and affirmations to replace outdated and unbeneficial thoughts. As added encouragement, place positive affirmations in places you will see them on a regular and daily basis. By attaching positive emotions to your current thinking, your mind is already experiencing some of the physical and psychological benefits. As you begin a physical workout, aim for simple and sustainable. Workout because you love your body, not because you hate it. Place workout times on your schedule to hold yourself accountable as if this is a meeting with the CEO. The CEO can now be known as Chief Energy Officer, as each workout will release new energy and focus to your day. TVH employee Bridgette Horner commented, “Someone was wanting to schedule a meeting and noticed I had blocked out times each week for my Pilates workouts. This 2% of my day is something I do for me and I know it makes me more productive too.” At TVH Olathe, the Nudge Center provides exercise equipment, free weights, pool tables, foosball, two ping pong tables, basketball hoop game and open area for fitness classes, library and lounge. The Nudge Center offers something for everyone and employee love spending time there. “My two 15-minute breaks a day have turned into my power minutes where I work out with weights at the Nudge Center! Not only have I become much stronger and stand taller, but I feel recharged for my desk job! 34

CAMSO’S NEW AND IMPROVED CAMSO PRESS-ON TIRES

ADVERTORIAL

Evolving forklift industry calls for a new approach The forklift has been around for more than 100 years. These material movers have evolved from basic singlepurpose vehicles into sophisticated working machines capable of serving a growing range of industries and applications.

wheels and axle. Increased travel time, distance and duty cycles means more heat build-up with less cooling time between jobs. When operating in high intensity applications, tires are pushed beyond their limits. The result: thermal failure leading to unscheduled downtime.

With the development of larger models sometimes combined with active stability systems and more specialized attachments, forklifts are now expected to carry heavier loads, while moving faster and lifting higher than ever before.

Customers want maximum productivity from their machines Press-on tires are the technology of choice to handle high loads with great stability. They are most likely to experience extreme load conditions whencompared to other tire technologies. As the world largest manufacturer of press-on tires, it’s our job to understand the unique mobility needs of any forklift and its application intensity requirements. Why? So we can engineer the right tire.

Downtime is not an option Fleet managers expect maximum productivity and have no tolerance for downtime. Tires are a big part of this equation. Think about all the variables. More weight and more speed translate into more stress on the tires, Solideal PON 775 That’s where the new Solideal PON 775 comes into play. This new press-on tire raises the bar and is designed for high intensity applications where other pressons quickly fail. It’s engineered to provide the best performance in terms of heat resistance, energy efficiency and long-lasting life. • 90% better resistance to internal heat build-up • 45% longer tire life due to abrasion-resistant tread compound • 70% better energy efficiency due to low-rolling resistance rubber compounds • Reduced ground pressure due to wide and flat footprint • Minimized stress on the tire edges thanks to unique sidewall design • Indicates when to replace your tire due to wear indicator and safety line

Solideal Magnum 550 and 555 Long seen as the industry benchmark, our Solideal Magnum Smooth and Solideal Magnum Traction (SM/TR), newly named Solideal PON 555 and PON 550, are brought to the next level. Some key performance improvements have been made to the rubber compound to optimize performance for medium intensity applications: • 45% longer tire life • 6% better resistance to internal heat build-up • 8% improvement on energy efficiency

Together, the new Solideal PON 775 and the revamped Solideal PON 555/550 were designed as a series to provide the maximum lifespan for an array of different application intensities to ensure we provide customers with the lowest operating cost solution on their tire selection. www.mhnetwork.com
