HOW-TO

Promoting workplace safety with warehouse safety signs

Want to stay OSHA compliant and create a safer work environment? Better communication by way of warehouse safety signs is a best practice when it comes to managing risk in the workplace. But if you’re operating a warehouse, how do you know which signs you should use and where they should be placed? OSHA and ANSI both have a wealth of resources available to educate readers about safety signs and their regulations and standards. If you want to get the 411 on general safety sign standards these are great places to start. However, as specialists in material handling and warehouse storage, we wanted to provide our own take on warehouse safety signage. Read on for a few common warehouse safety sign applications and why they’re important for operating a safe and productive workplace. Material handling safety Material handling offers its own unique set of challenges when it comes to workplace safety. The goals of a successful material handling operation often include increasing labor and storage space efficiency. While important, these goals don’t always mesh perfectly with personnel safety goals. This is why it’s essential for businesses to establish their own safety standards and use strategies like safety labels to help keep employees out of harm’s way. Hazmat symbol placards Chances are you’re already familiar with the hazardous materials signage adopted by the NFPA. It’s common to 8

see diamond-shaped signs on trucks carrying flammable or toxic materials. These signs usually specify whether the payload is flammable, hazardous to health, reactive, or another specific hazard. But these signs aren’t only used on trucks — any workplace with hazardous materials needs to use hazmat placards to communicate these hazards, says OSHA. Their Hazard Communication Standard explains the purpose of mandating hazard signage: “In order to ensure chemical safety in the workplace, information about the identities and hazards of the chemicals must be available and understandable to workers.” Pallet racking capacity labels provide vital information to anyone loading or unloading pallet racking or industrial shelving. There are two main capacity numbers that personnel should be aware of when using warehouse racking: the beam capacity and the upright frame capacity. Beam capacity refers to the maximum amount of weight that can be supported by a pair of crossbeams. Upright frame capacity refers to the maximum amount of weight that can be supported by a pair of upright frames. In other words, the combined weight of all beam levels in a bay of racking should never exceed the upright frame capacity rating. For beam and upright frame capacities, we highly recommend contacting your material handling provider or the product’s manufacturer. Different brands and styles of pallet rack and shelving can vary greatly when it comes to capacity. Once you’re confident in the capacity numbers for these components, you can begin placing capacity labels on their respective parts. Loading dock signs Loading docks are among the most dangerous areas in any given warehouse. The amount of activity found around the loading dock and the sudden drop in elevation make it susceptible to accidents. In addition to proper safety training, it’s also important to mark them with the appropriate signage. Loading dock safety signs can signal to passersby that the area they’re approaching is an active loading area. They can remind truck drivers to chock their wheels

HOW-TO when unloading product to prevent any movement. Or, they can simply caution workers to watch their step when working around the dock area. Regardless of which signage you use at your loading dock, make sure the signs are in plain sight. The easier the signs are to see, the more effective they’ll be in preventing accidents. And when you’re talking about one of the most dangerous areas in the warehouse, that’s an important goal. Communication for a safer workplace Warehouse safety signs are really just another way to communicate. Safety signs and placards play an important role in warehouse safety because they communicate to personnel that there’s a potential hazard in the area, or that they need to exercise caution before doing something. They serve as reminders to employees and guests alike and send one of the most important messages in a safety-conscious workplace: be careful.

SAFETY CORNER

Pre-shift inspections OHSA states “Industrial trucks shall be examined before being placed in service, and shall not be placed in service if the examination shows any condition adversely affecting the safety of the vehicle. Such examination shall be made at least daily. Where industrial trucks are used on a round-the-clock basis, they shall be examined after each shift. Defects when found shall be immediately reported and corrected.” It is one thing to require it be done and quite another to ensure it is really happening. Contrary to popular belief, OSHA does not even require they be done in writing, per a letter of interpretation from OSHA on May 9, 2000 which states “Although the standard requires that the examination be conducted, there is no OSHA requirement that the examination be recorded in writing on a checklist such as the one you provided.” Most companies, but not all, at least make an attempt to comply with inspection requirements but here are some of the problems I see in the field:

How can you fix these problems? 1) Create reasonable checklists for each type of lift in your facility, using a variety of resources including operator’s manuals, OSHA guidelines, corporate materials, etc. Avoid listing items which don’t apply or those that will be checked by a vendor or in-house maintenance. 2) Allow time for operators to complete inspections and give them an approximate time frame which a correct inspection should take. Let them know that 30 second checks or 30 minute checks are not likely appropriate time frames. 3) Be sure your training includes a decent amount of detail on what to inspect, how to inspect it and what to do if there are problems. 4) Be sure that you have set the correct expectations. Expect operators to inspect your forklifts and expect your system of identifying unsafe forklifts and removing them from service be followed every time. Written by Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems, a leading provider of forklift safety training and materials. Email questions for Forklift Training Systems to networkeditorial@wcinet.com.

TILT-OR-LIFT INC.

1) Lack of a list to follow or inadequate lists which are missing important items or contain items which do not apply to the equipment. 2) Lack of time to properly complete the inspections. Operators many times are in a hurry, as are their employers, which creates an inspection that may be deficient. 3) Lack of training on how to properly inspect. Are the operators actually being trained to inspect their current makes and models? We have had supposedly well-trained people who are not able to raise the hood or find the oil dipstick, which tells us they are not doing their inspections. 4) Improper systems in place to deal with problems identified. In some cases, everything is being done right, until the point where paperwork, including issues that need attention, are forwarded on for action. If the ball is dropped here, a black hole is created and things never get fixed, which can be very damaging with OSHA or in a litigation.

CREAMER'S CORNER

You have choice! With another year under our belt, many business owners may be discussing the topic of new equipment for their fleet. Some will be buying forklifts while others may be purchasing manlifts. But for some the discussions will be a new sweeper or scrubber or maybe a combination sweeper/scrubber. So let’s discuss that topic today. There are so many choices one has today that you simply didn’t have 30 years ago. One example would be the choice of a combination sweeper/scrubber. Before 1985, the discussion was “does our facility require a sweeper or scrubber? There wasn’t any of this sweeper/ scrubber talk, because those machines just didn’t exist. I recall many large companies had both machines, a sweeper and a scrubber. They required both. So think about this…the decision to make a sweeper/scrubber was resisted for as long as possible by the OEM’s such as Tennant and Advance. Those guys wanted to sell two pieces of equipment not just one. However, PowerBoss, being the new kid on the block at that time, made the decision to make the first sweeper/scrubber. Tennant still

resisted manufacturing sweeper/scrubbers and continued selling scrubbers with pre-sweep, such as the famous 528 scrubber. Another type of machine Tennant offered was a sweeper that could be converted into a scrubber. First introduced in the 1974 was the very popular Tennant Model 240 Sweeper. Tennant sold the idea in this way “buy the 240 sweeper and by purchasing a scrubbing attachment with it, you can have both a sweeper and a scrubber. It did work but to convert from a sweeper to a scrubber and back again was a hassle. One had to remove the hopper box and install the scrubbing attachment and all the hose and lines needed to make it a scrubber. And remember, you still had a sweeper or scrubber not the combination sweeper/scrubber introduced by PowerBoss. So, it would be another 10 years before Tennant jumped into the sweeper/scrubber business full throttle and never looked back. In 1994, Tennant introduced the model 8400, a large sweeper/scrubber to compete against the PowerBoss TSS Models. Advance introduced the TigerCat Model 4500 and now you had choice. So this period in the mid1990s could be known as the tipping point for innovation. Then by the late 1990s two things happened to change the make-up of a cleaning machine. #1. Companies are starting to use their warehouse space more wisely and effectively with the isle getting smaller and smaller. #2. The idea of global warming is starting to take hold, so the battery/electric machines are becoming more popular. Today you see the market share increase with small to mid-size battery sweeper/scrubbers. Today there is a sweeper, scrubber or sweeper/scrubber made for just about any environment or situation. As late as May of 2017, Tennant introduced the Model M17 Battery Sweeper/Scrubber. There is even a stand-up rider scrubber never imagined 20 years ago. When buying a new machine I suggest you do your “due diligence” because YOU HAVE CHOICE. Thank you for reading and if you have any questions about this article or the sweeper/scrubber industry, please e-mail me. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/scrubber. TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Beyond diet and exercise While diet and exercise are two major pillars of wellness, helping others also has an impact on our mindset and well-being. Sometimes we feel the world is so large and complex that it’s impossible for any one of us to make a difference. Small acts have rippling effects that go far beyond the initial start. At TVH, our employees took action during the holiday season with a Giving Card Challenge. Using Points earned through the TVH Nudge program for health and wellness activities including walking challenges, blood drives and wellness classes, employees purchased Giving Cards. Each card is good for a $25 donation to a non-profit charity via our TVHCares program. In total, we donated $13,325!

In addition, TVHCares work with Lakemary, a nonprofit in Olathe, KS, whose mission is to help children and adults with mental and physical disabilities and Arden Shore, a non-profit near Grayslake, IL, whose mission is dedicated to rebuilding children’s lives in a caring community. During the holidays, we provided 175 gifts for 55 individuals at these organizations this year alone. You don’t have to do something life-changing to make a difference. It can be as simple as making someone feel special, reaching out to a lonely person, helping a troubled kid find the right path, or comforting a friend who needs a shoulder to cry on. Our Inventory Control Team came together to make a Quilt of Valor. This custom made quilt is made and given to a military veteran to honor and thank them for their military service. The retired Air Force Purple Heart recipient was awestruck that others would honor him decades after his service. The employees radiated as the quilt was presented. There is power in numbers. One person can get things started; a second person can create some momentum; a third person may influence others to join in. And, before you know it, you’ve created a movement. Four guidelines in creating a movement: Believe. Have faith that one person can make a difference, and that one person is you. Act. There are opportunities all around you. Don’t wait for someone else to make the first move. Choose one and do something about it. Lead. Be the change that you want to see in the world. Action Required. Transform. Throw a pebble into the water and create ripples. Little wins create momentum; consistency can turn into lasting change. The world is changing every day. If enough people create a ripple for change, we can create a better future. One person can make all the difference. And that one person is YOU! If you would like to know more about TVH and the Nudge Health and Wellness programs, contact Lucy DelSarto, Health & Wellness Coach for TVH Americas, at networkeditorial@wcinet.com.

Warehouse management and inventory Bernhard, director of Career and Continuing Education at Kalamazoo Valley. “It was amazing to witness the academy control academy graduates 13 Kalamazoo Valley Community College, in partnership with Western Michigan University and Urban Alliance, held a special graduation Thursday, January 11 for the Momentum/Warehouse Management and Inventory Control Academy graduates. Thirteen students, all of whom have faced significant barriers to employment, walked the stage at WMU’s Fetzer Center with new skills and job opportunities under their belts. The three organizations joined forces to offer advanced technical training in the growing field of warehouse management and inventory control to students in Urban Alliance’s Momentum Urban Employment Initiative, a program that helps participants build self-sufficiency and overcome obstacles to gainful employment. Forty percent of those who enrolled in the program in the past year were homeless. Eighty-eight percent were ex-offenders and 79% came from generational poverty. The accelerated 13-day training program took place at the new 40,000-squarefoot Urban Alliance Technical Center in Parchment. “It was an extraordinary collaboration,” said Elizabeth

students working together as a team, maturing and blossoming.” Urban Alliance’s Momentum Urban Employment Initiative has proven to be one of the most successful employment programs in the county. Eighty-four percent of those enrolled in the program successfully graduated and 94% were successfully placed into employment with an average starting wage of $11.96 per hour. Graduates also maintained an 86% success rate for employment retention beyond 90 days. In the past two years, the Momentum Urban Employment Initiative has run eight successful training academies in partnership with Kalamazoo Valley in the fields of Culinary and Sustainable Food Systems, Production Technician and CNC Machine Operator – putting more than 89 people into the workforce. The Warehouse Management/Inventory Control Academy is the first collaboration between the three organizations, with other training academies in the areas of Quality Control, Coding, Call Center Technician, and Diesel Technician in development. “This has taught us that it takes collaboration to transform a community,” Bernhard said. “We’ve come together to transform lives and look forward to the continuation of this great partnership with WMU and Urban Alliance.”
