SAFETY CORNER

Using positive reinforcement to promote safe forklift operations As a father, I am constantly looking for ways to motivate my kids. I have found a great motivational tool, which is positive reinforcement. The old saying “you catch more flies with honey than vinegar” seems to be true. I get them working towards a positive reward such as a later bedtime or more playtime. I also use negative reinforcement, such as losing playtime or going to bed early, but I use it as a last resort. Normally, the positive works much better and lasts longer. You might ask what this has to do with reinforcing safe forklift operations; let me explain. If you were called into your manager’s office tomorrow for a review and told “You’re doing ok, I think we’ll keep you around another year” how would you feel? If you had been working hard and doing your best then you might feel disappointed, unappreciated and maybe even angry, right? That is exactly how many highly skilled forklift operators feel today. I come across people like this all the

time, they are smart, extremely skilled and make their companies run like a well-oiled machine, but nobody seems to notice. Year in and year out they quickly and efficiently stack and store materials safely and efficiently, which makes their company profitable, but who cares? No wonder morale is so low in many companies and industries today. Here are some ideas to motivate your forklift operators: 1. Come up with a safe operation award (like the million mile awards some companies give semitruck drivers.) Make it tough to achieve, but not impossible, so that only the best of the best achieve it (and not the guy who hits the building column every day.) Put up some cash or a nice prize and recognize them in the company newsletter or at a company function. Recognition is a very powerful positive reinforcement, maybe even more so than money. 2. Organize a forklift rodeo (or I prefer the words forklift skills challenge) event. This might be just your company or you might include everyone in your industrial park, etc. Set up real life courses, such as trailer loading, stacking, maneuvering, etc. and grade them on safe operation and efficiency, with the emphasis on safety. Hand out trophies and recognize the winners, get them in the local paper or have the local TV station cover the event. Everyone in the world likes to have a chance to show their skills and this gives the forklift operators a chance to do just that. 3. Get their input on how to improve safety and reduce expenses related to material handling in your location. Put up decent cash rewards and incentives for great ideas. If the company is going to save $10,000 next year as a result, I think they can cough up $100 for the idea! This will make the operators feel more like they are a part of your team and also save your company money. CREAMER'S CORNER

Urethane: What’s up with this deal? You would think that I would get many more calls and questions in regards with squeegee materials and how the material relates with each other. I think users probably need to be better educated on this topic. I feel the enduser just thinks that there is one squeegee for his or her machine and that’s it. Well, rest assure that there are at least five squeegee materials available. Some function good or average while some are very good while still others are excellent. You want the excellent one, right? Yes, indeed! So, let me begin with a customer that was using a squeegee for several years before that question arose. This is a small rental house, so these machines could go into a wide range of environments. She has a number of 5680 and 5700 Tennant walk-behind scrubbers. These models are almost identical machines, the 5700 being the heavy duty version of the pair. So when she contacted me for squeegee discussions, I was all ears. Here’s a quick brief on these two Tennant walk-behind scrubbers. Of course they walk-behind scrubbers with a solution tank capacity of 30 gallons. They are battery machines with a typical run time of 4 to 4.5 hours on a charge. They are listed as scrubbing approximately 30,000 sq.ft/2840 sq.m. per hour. They hold up well even in the toughest of environments, being very versatile. So the main question came down to: Why do the squeegees last longer during some rentals then others? Wow, what a million dollar question, but there is an answer. I will attempt to give you the scoop why this is. So here we go. There are several different types of rubber materials that make up squeegees. These are: tan gum, red gum, neoprene and urethane are among the most popular. And, I will tell you that these four squeegee materials will solve any squeegee problem that arises. So, what are some of the squeegee problems? 1. Wears prematurely for early replacement. 2. Tears easily and hinders the functionality. 3. Does not squeegee properly leaving streaks. The physical compounds that make up these materials has become known as tensile strength. This tensile strength is one of the determining factors whether your squeegee will hold up. 14

May 2018

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

Even though neoprene is a good material that holds up against oils and oil compounds, it lacks the tensile strength to resist tears. It would do well in a truck/auto repair shop where the floors may become oily but not do well in a machine shop where there are steel and steel shavings on the floor. The tensile strength of neoprene is 1000 PSI. Another good example of a problem is the wiping action of the squeegee. Among the most difficult surfaces are tile and terrazzo floors. The natural choice in this situation is tan gum. It is among the top squeegee to perform an excellent wiping/squeegee action with a low temperature flexibility. The tensile strength for this one is 3400 PSI. But, when you have a rental business and don’t know what environment the machine is going into with one exception, my recommendation will always be urethane. With a tensile strength of 4500 PSI it is by far the squeegee that has the longest wear factor. The performance traits are such that it does well in chemical, acid, oil and hot water applications. The resilience and performance factors far exceed any other materials the OEM’s may offer. There is simply no substitute for urethane. However with that being said, urethane has one “Achilles heel” and that is low temperatures. This means that it does not perform well in a cold storage facility for example. This is the one drawback for this material. Tan gum or red gum has the advantage in these types of environments. Urethane just does not have the flexibility in cold temperatures and remains too rigid. Of course durometer matters also, but that is another story. I hope this article is helpful and thanks for reading. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/ scrubber. TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Basic steps to better health In our fast paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the chaos of too many activities and deadlines, more often than not, at the cost of our health. We all have gone without enough sleep or selected the quick and easy, often not very nutritious, food options in order to complete projects or meet deadlines. This behavior often contributes to you feeling exhausted or sick. We all know it’s important to take care of ourselves, but are often overwhelmed by the amount of options and information out there on nutrition and exercise. There is so much to choose from that we often feel defeated before we even start. It’s easy to take something simple and complicate it; however, to take something complicated and simplify it is an art. This philosophy also applies to your health and well-being. Make it simple by incorporating these seven sustainable things into your everyday busy life. By doing this you will begin to support your body’s immune system and reap the benefits of an enhanced quality of life. Choices become habits and although you can’t change overnight, you can change the direction. A fundamental wellness guide. 1. Hydrate - Realize the power of a well hydrated body. Every cell and organ in your body benefits from hydration. Chronic dehydration is the root cause of many painful degenerative diseases and excess body weight. With proper hydration the body can function optimally, repair, restore and detox the body to a healthier state. Try to drink half your body weight in ounces every day. Amount varies depending on activity level and climate you live in. 2. Sleep - Make sleep a priority. A minimum of seven hours per night is recommended. Everything from lucid thinking and good decision making, to proper digestion and peak performance is heavily dependent on getting good quality sleep. 3. G o green - Every day include some greens in your diet such as spinach, kale, arugula, romaine, collard greens, swiss chard and bok choy. This increases your consumption of alkalizing minerals which combat acidic wastes. Acid wastes lead to inflammation which can lead to disease and illness. 16

4. Probiotics - For gut health and immunity, consume prebiotics and probiotic rich foods on a regular basis or take supplements. Drink kombucha, eat unsweetened natural yogurt or cultured vegetables including sauerkraut, kimchi and pickles. 5. Movement - A body in motion stays in motion. Play like a kid and engage in some activity for a minimum of 30 minutes every day. Don’t complicate it, this can be walking, dancing or any physical activity you enjoy. Get a friend or family member to join you for accountability. Invest in a wearable device and track your daily step average. Aim to increase the amount each month. 6. Eat raw foods - Uncooked fruits and vegetables retain their full nutrient potential, contain enzymes that aid digestion and mineral-rich water for better health. They are also more hydrating than cooked foods. Plan ahead and prepare raw veggies for snacks. 7. Mindfulness - Burning the candle at both ends makes the candle burnout twice as fast. Take time to breathe, meditate and stretch. Listen to your body’s whispers before they become screams. All change starts small and require action and most importantly, follow through. Begin by embracing the fact that the human body has not changed. What has changed dramatically is our food and lifestyles. Small changes can result in big shifts. No matter what the situation, you always have a choice. Do something today that your future self will thank you for. TVH provides weekly wellness classes, mindfulness classes and monthly speakers to educate and empower employees. Speakers in 2018 include a nutritionist, sleep specialist, mindfulness (Meditation, Reiki and Aromatherapy), coaching on how to read food labels and more. FEATURE ARTICLE

Loading dock equipment; such as dock levelers require proper usage and installation based on the manufacturer’s guidelines. Not all dock levelers are same. Each dock leveler is created to handle a specific load capacity and performance. Problems generally occur when the operating guidelines are not followed and the person who operates the dock leveler has not been properly trained to operate the dock equipment. To clear your worries and guide you in identifying the problem of your loading dock, we have come up with these “10 Supertips to prevent your Loading Dock Problem.” 1. Be familiar with the equipment. Take in mind that it is the manufacturer’s responsibility to give the important details which pertain to the dock leveler’s safety guide and precautions, product features, maintenance schedule, troubleshooting reference, component breakdown, warranty and contact number where you can reach them, in case there’s a problem with your dock leveler. Make sure to read and understand the manual carefully, it is very important to become accustomed with the dock leveler and its controls before operating them. 2. Select the right person to operate the dock leveler. • Th e person assigned to operate the dock leveler should have undergone enough training and developed strong familiarity in operating dock levelers. • S hould be physically fit to operate the device and has a positive work attitude (doesn’t operate the device under the influence of drugs or alcohol). •A fter selecting the right person, make sure he reads and understands the owner’s manual. 26

3. Practice safe operating precautions. • Remember to always disconnect or remove the safety device when operating a transport vehicle restraint. • Make it to a point, that the warning signs are intact and never removed. Never operate the equipment, if other unauthorized personnel have not transferred outside the operating area. • Make sure that the operating area is free from any foreign object that can cause accident. • Keep away from the dock leveler when trailer is approaching or leaving the loading dock area. • Avoid placing hands or any part of the body towards the moving parts. • Refrain from using a damaged dock leveler, ask a reliable loading dock service company to check and repair the equipment before using them. • Always keep in mind, that the lips of the dock leveler should extend at least 4 inches onto the truck. • Maintain safe distance on all side edges. • Do not use a dock leveling equipment, if the height of truck is obviously greater or lower. • Avoid overloading the dock leveler • Don’t let any device or object left unattended on dock leveler. 4. Make sure your dock leveler is ready before the maintenance. • Arrange the leveler properly; in vertical manner with lip extended. • Maintenance props should be securely placed in the lowered upkeep standpoint. 5. Impose safety measures during maintenance. • Practice the “lockout/tag out” procedure. Turn off the electrical power, especially when welding the

FEATURE ARTICLE device. Lock the equipment with locking device approved by OSHA. Take note that he only person who must have the access to the key is the person servicing the equipment. Barricade and Warning signs must be placed in the work station. • Keep away from the dock leveler and lip when working ahead of the dock leveler. • Never grind or weld when flammable materials are present. Have a fire extinguisher close to you, when performing these tasks. • Check the user’s guide to limit platform and bleeding hydraulic structure. 6. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for carriage and platform. • Inspect the roller track for correct form and must be clear from any unknown objects. • Take away any device that may be banded to the dock leveler. • Ensure that the lifting brackets and mounting structure are intact. Brackets should swivel deliberately to the mounting jolt. • Install the carriage slowly. • Installation of carriage depends on its type; if it’s a manual side shift you can weld it on roller track stops. After that, you can now work on the electrical connections. • Use chains and lifting equipment to carry the dock leveler. Choose a lifting device that can carry the capacity of your leveler. 7. Proper wiring and control panel installation • Practice the “lockout/tag out” procedure. Before welding the unit always remember that Ground wires and any source of electricity must be disconnected. A certified professional electrician is the only person authorized to do all the electrical work. • Mount the push button at 48 inches height. (Distance from the dock floor to the basal portion of the control panel. • Field electrical lines in the pit conjunction box and dock leveler electric cable should be interconnected. 8. Make sure placards are easy to read and are placed in designated areas. • It is highly suggestive that placards should be attached close to the control box by using a nylon tie. You can also post the placard to the wall, on the nearest left of the leveler at eye level. 28

9. When your dock levelers need troubleshooting do important preparations first. • Raise the platform, turn off and disconnect all power sources. • Every single fuse inside the control panel should be carefully checked. Immediately replace those that are broken. • Place barricade and safety warnings on the work area. 10. All maintenance, service and replacement of parts should be documented. • Written documentation will support that you are still liable for the product warranty. Knowing these 10 tips can prevent you from facing problems with your dock leveler. Just keep in mind that Dock levelers have different types and features. It is also better if you get advice from the experts to ensure that your loading dock operation is safe and sound. The professional technicians at Loading Dock, Inc. can help you keep your dock levelers in peak condition.
