SAFETY CORNER

A lesson learned the hard way Have you ever heard the saying “A lesson learned the hard way?” That is what comes to mind when I think of a recent accident here in Ohio. In the early morning of the first working day of 2016, a pedestrian was struck, drug a substantial distance and then crushed to death by a forklift at a fortune 500 manufacturing company. Unfortunately, this scenario plays out way too many times each year at companies across the United States, however this one had a little different outcome. Most of these pedestrian deaths and serious injuries are just recorded as tragic accidents, for which there is little punishment to the forklift operators, other than maybe getting a slap on the wrist or losing their job. In this case, the outcome was a bit different. The back story on this case involves a very experienced forklift operator, who had been certified and knew how to safely operate his forklift at the site. The problem is, that knowing is one thing and doing is another. According to co-workers interviewed after the accident, this operator was not safe and not doing the right things to keep others safe. In-plant cameras also caught the operator running six

stop signs in the hour prior to the accident, so even though the accident itself was not caught on camera, it was not a stretch to determine it was unlikely that he had stopped before running down the pedestrian (who was located right in the middle of a well-lit, well-painted crosswalk, which was also equipped with stop signs and stop bars in each direction.) The forklift was carrying a load that blocked his functional forward view, which should have forced him to travel in reverse, so a number of cardinal forklift safety rules were broken that day. Companies fear OSHA, but OSHA did not cite either the operator’s company or the host company. The operator told OSHA what they wanted to hear and they apparently believed it. Thankfully, the local prosecutor was not buying the story and held this operator responsible for his actions. This operator was convicted of one count of reckless homicide, a third-degree felony, and sentenced to three years in prison. This was a lesson that did not have to be learned the hard way. Companies need to do a better job of monitoring their forklift operators; things like blowing through stop signs and driving with blocked views are easy to see in every day operations across the United States. Forklift operators need to realize that they must follow the rules all the time and every time and that they have the same legal liability in driving a forklift as they do in driving a car. In the end of this story everyone loses. A wife loses a husband, two children lose a father, co-workers lose a friend, the operator’s family loses him for three years, the operator himself loses his freedom and his company likely paid huge money in the out of court civil settlement with the family. The only positive is that this cautionary tale may actually save other lives if we get the word out before something like this happens again. Key milestones reached in the past 10 years In the recent past, Ganter, a manufacturer of standard parts since 1894, formed a synergistic partnership with JW Winco that has since provided world-class business solutions to customers. In 2009, JW Winco officially became part of a Ganter Company, which expanded capabilities and solidified resources globally. Since then, both sales and inventory increased by 80% respectively. JW Winco is also a committed leader in environmental stewardship. “In 2013, Winco installed a green roof system on its New Berlin facility as part of the company’s effort in reducing our carbon footprint and managing rain water efficiently,” said Mark Winkler, JW Winco chief finance officer. In 2017, Winco invested in a new modernized logo and mobile-responsive website, which is dedicated to providing the customer with modern navigation and usability. The new look and feel of the site reflects the strength in commitment to the customers. “Winco’s new logo evolved from the previous look, depicting the face and mane of a lion with stylized shapes of products that Winco sells. The lion represents strength and leadership, two qualities the company continues to integrate into all aspects of business,” said Robert Winkler, JW Winco chief technology officer. “When we say JW Winco, a Ganter Company, we mean unmatched strength in market innovation and product solutions,” said John Winkler, JW Winco chief executive officer. “Our combined technical knowledge, customer service, design engineering, manufacturing, stocking, and distribution capabilities are our greatest strengths offered to our clients.” JW Winco, headquartered in New Berlin, WI, is ISO 9001:2015 Certified and prides itself on having the largest selection of standard parts in inch and metric sizes, made of aluminum, steel, stainless steel, and plastic. Due to extensive investments in infrastructure, a forward-thinking vision of the industry, strong leadership, and a team of very dedicated employees, Winco continues to be a leader in the standard parts industry. www.jwwinco.com

CREAMER'S CORNER

Replacement parts - Aftermarket vs OEM Confused is how I would describe the feelings of some sweeper and scrubber owners. They know that machine is going to break down, it is a matter of when. And, ultimately the question will arise - Do I use OEM parts? Well, I will delve into those unanswered questions in this article. Definition First of all let’s define the term “OEM.” As this term is broken down, it represents Original Equipment Manufacturer. So, that piece of the original equipment that you bought is made by the manufacturer. And, this term is used in many different industries not just sweeper and scrubber. This term is used in the forklift industrial market, in regards to front end loaders in the construction industry. There may be OEM names familiar to you and not so much. There are names such as Caterpillar Lift Truck, which should be familiar, then Gravely Tractor that might not be so familiar. But as far as the sweeper/ scrubber OEM’s, some of the names would include Windsor, Clarke, Nobles, Nilfisk-Advance and Minuteman PowerBoss. Of course there are many others. Moving on let’s describe the term “OEM parts.” So these are parts that the OEM’s sell. In an easy answer, yes. But are all parts they sell OEM parts. In my opinion the answer is no. I have always had two avenues of thought about this answer. OEM parts are parts made by an OEM for their equipment and could include body parts, frame parts and that sort of item. Also included are parts made by other companies bought by the OEM specifically for the application of their equipment and for a specific purpose. A special molded P7 non-skid tire would be considered an OEM part. A 500x8 pneumatic tire that is readily available on the open market is not an OEM part but what I call an OEM replacement part. Another item such as a 12v horn is again one of these such items. Yet another item would be a hydraulic motor. Equipment manufacturers are no different than any other company, they have to make a profit. These companies will send bids out on parts they use on their equipment as any other company would. You see, OEM’s sell replacement parts for their own equipment as well. These are multi-use non-specific parts that they go back to a manufacture of that product. At least this is my definition which differentiates the two kind of 12

www.mhnetwork.com

descriptions. At this definition, some may disagree. Quality This term - quality - is in the eye of the beholder. I see quality as a multi-facet resource of one’s company offerings. In other words, one can sell quality parts but lack customer service, has a rude sales force and has a one-word company description: arrogant. Then, there is the company that has great customer service, competitive pricing but their parts just don’t seem to last. Quality to me is all of the above: 1. Great customer service, 2. Knowledgeable sales group that genuinely care about the customer and 3. Parts that work and meet or exceed their function and last. And, by the way, the price is great. That’s quality. Let’s talk about examples of parts with quality. Example: Sheet metal parts, such as main brush doors, hopper doors, rear squeegee assemblies that have either been reversed engineered with the tolerances being tightened up or specially fitted and tested on original machines or both. What this means is that you will receive a better fitting part than the OEM original part. I know for a fact that many OEM manufacturers allow for tolerances to be plus (+) or minus (-) .020 to .030 thousand of an inch or more. We can hold tolerances + or - .005 thousand of an inch. Simply put, some of the aftermarket parts being made today have a higher standard than even the OEM part. Consequently, the ease with which the part installs out performs the OEM. And best of all the price is less expensive. Reliable distribution As with some long time sweeper manufacturers, they have, through the years, refined their distribution network. However with that being said, most of the manufacturers only have one parts warehouse in the USA to draw from, so the sweeper that broke down in California has to wait for parts from North Carolina. Yes, the next day air shipment is always viable, but is it cost effective? Are you going to pay $200 for freight for that part to fix a sweeper that you charge $150 to sweep a parking lot. Doesn’t make much sense. How about dealing with an aftermarket company with the ability to ship from seven warehouses just in the USA. So that part you need in California is actually stocked in California for the next day need at ground freight. By doing your due diligence you can find

an aftermarket parts company that fits this bill and you will find one out there. Warranty & support I will grant you that 30 or 40 years ago warranty was an afterthought from those parts companies. It wasn’t generally brought up as a topic, because the customer felt that getting the parts at a discounted price was enough. Today, the aftermarket parts people match or even exceed the OEM’s warranty policy. Many customers are often impressed with which these companies ease their minds when a problem may arise. So, those bad warranties are a thing of the past in most cases. But again, check out the company you are about to buy your parts from and see how the warranty policy pertains to your situation. In closing, it is not enough just to save money on aftermarket parts today, but with which the efficiency of the entire parts purchase experience occurs. The aftermarket companies have 1. Competitive pricing, 2. On-line ordering, 3. Ease to pay,

4. Rapid shipping, 5. Quality parts that last and 6. The overall ease to do business. Aftermarket vs OEM parts - you make the call! Thanks for reading. Dematic AGV receives UL system safety certification

Powered transporter makes drum handling easy for one operator

Dematic AGVs are the first to receive UL certification to the UL 3100 Standard. UL (Underwriters Laboratories) performs safety testing and certification on a variety of products, facilities, processes and systems worldwide. Its standards are recognized by industry, government and consumers as third-party certification of safer operation. As a member of UL’s Standards Technical Panel, Dematic participated in the development of UL 3100, a new safety standard specifically for AGVs. The requirements of UL 3100 call for a holistic system approach to evaluation, testing and certification to help ensure that the batteries, chargers and end products are protected against electric shock and fire. www.dematic.com

Liftomatic Material Handling, Inc. introduced the Ergo-PWPL-750 powered drum handling transport, a completely self-contained, powered drum handling transport that engages, lifts, lowers and moves all steel, plastic and fiber drums. The unit incorporates power drive forward and reverse, as well as power lift and lower features for moving drums quickly and safely in plants, warehouses and laboratories. Varying weight capacities are available between 650 and 1000 pounds. As part of Liftomatic’s Ergo-Matic® line, the unit is equipped with a fully programmable set of controls for easy operator adjustment. www.liftomatic.com

New hoists offer industry-leading technology and safety

Camso launches industry-first non-marking anti-static tire

Columbus McKinnon Corporation introduces its Yale® YK™ and ShawBox® SK™ electric wire rope hoists. The Yale YK and Shaw-Box SK monorail hoists offer reliable operation, high efficiency and long life. The Yale YK and Shaw-Box SK are designed with safety in mind, incorporating standard safety features such as a block-operated limit switch, adjustable geared limit switch, motor temperature control and overload protection. The Yale YK and ShawBox SK are ideal for applications with space limitations, featuring a low headroom trolley that can be used on monorail runways and single-girder overhead travelling cranes. www.cmworks.com

Camso unveils the first patented anti-static forklift tire to resolve the important safety issue of static electricity generated by non-marking tires. In highintensity applications, tires are pushed beyond their limits and are likely to experience heat build-up. Where non-marking tires are used, operators and warehouse managers also have the issue of static build-up to consider. Camso took these issues seriously and created the revolutionary Solideal PON 775 NMAS tire, the world’s first press-on that prevents static build-up on non-marking tires thereby resolving potential safety issues for forklift operators as well as facility damage. www.camso.co

New Dock Stop Gate prevents accidents The Dock Stop Gate from “Save”ty Yellow Products is a new safety solution designed to prevent accidents – specifically forklifts driving or backing off docks at warehouse and facility gates. Designed to withstand 4,000 pounds at 5 mph, the Dock Stop is a powerful solution that includes two rotating arms that lock with a pin, two 42”bollards, and a 30” bollard available. Meets OSHA requirements and has 5/8”x 4-3/4” wedge anchors on request. The 38” tall guards protect against a common form of damage – bends and kinks from forklifts or pallet jacks. Not only is this kind of mistake a costly one, but it shuts down production. www.save-ty.com

TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Stay calm and walk on In an age of digital fitness trackers, the 10,000 steps goal has emerged as the gold standard. Upping your step count, whether you increase your daily total to 5,000 or that coveted 10,000 steps goal, is one step toward being that much healthier. At TVH we have a walking challenge for each season of the year to help encourage employees to be active and healthy. We also make it fun by adding in a little friendly competition by recognizing the top 20 steppers from each challenge. These top steppers have routinely reached a 16,000, or more, daily step average. Whether you take 8,000 or 25,000 steps in a day, the two ultimate goals of tracking your steps are to increase your awareness of daily activity (or lack thereof ) and to strive to be your best by increasing your daily step average. When these two goals are met you are a top stepper and it’s important to acknowledge your achievements. Looking for additional motivation and guidance? Below are 10 techniques to keep you moving in the right direction and keep boredom from setting in.

4. Pass on convenience. Get out of your car instead of doing drive ups. Park your car further away in the parking lot. Return shopping carts back into the store instead of the nearest cart corral. Develop the mindset and reap the health benefits.

1. Start small. Wear your device for a day or two and don’t do anything special. Get to know what a typical daily step count is for you. If your count is 3,000 per day, trying to get 10,000 will not only seem like an impossible goal but also comes with a high risk of injury. Instead, aim for a reasonable goal of 4,000. There’s nothing magical about the 10,000 steps per day, it’s more about progress. Start where you are and build to where you want to be.

9. Cardio dance shuffle. Put on some tunes and dance. Music brings joy to the mind, body and spirit, so tune in and tune up your health.

2. Partner up. Walking with others on your journey is a great way to increase motivation and enjoyment. The shared experience will make it more about the progress and less about the number, which is an important part of creating lasting change. If you’re an office worker, consider walking meetings to get ideas and conversations flowing. 3. Take the stairs. Utilize the stairs at home and work. Set a timer and do several trips up and down. No gym required. 22

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

5. Take a walking lunch break. Split your lunch into segments, one moving and the other sitting. A 10to-15 minute movement break could log you up to 1,000 steps! 6. Exit out on the email habit. Rather than sending an email to a co-worker, walk over to their desk. Mini breaks are beneficial both mentally and physically. Your eyes will also benefit from a break from the computer screen. 7. Set a movement timer. Garmin wearables have a “red movement bar” to remind you to get up and move if you’ve been sitting for over an hour. Sitting is to the spine what sugar is to teeth. 8. Pre or post walks after meals. Take a walk with friends or family before or after dinner. Not only is it a great way to spend time together but it’s also a great way to disconnect from technology and enjoy nature. The more enjoyable the walks the more likely they will become a routine you look forward to.

10. Pet friendly. Dogs are always up for a walk and help push us farther than we’d normally go. If you don’t have a dog, check with your neighbor, friend or local animal shelter for volunteering. Getting those additional steps lead to a stronger heart, a more rugged metabolism, more stable blood sugar level and increased cognitive behavior. Walking is easy to do but also easy not to do. Do something today that your future self will be grateful for. If you would like to know more about the TVH Nudge Health and Wellness programs, contact Lucy DelSarto, Health & Wellness Coach for TVH Americas. Email networkeditorial@wcinet.com with questions.
