Floor Marking Ideas for Warehouses The floor isn’t just for walking on anymore! In warehouses, the floor offers great opportunities for improving visual communications through the use of floor markings. While floor markings have been used for many years, companies are now using them in new and innovative ways that are far more thought out than in the past. When done properly, floor markings can be useful for people at every level of a company. It is important, however, to really think through how floor markings should be used in a facility. If they are applied without a good strategy, they can actually cause more problems than they fix. With this in mind, all facility managers should look at floor marking ideas for warehouses and determine which ones will work best for their needs. What Are Floor Markings? Floor markings are any type of marking that goes on the floor. In warehouses they are commonly used to improve safety, efficiency, organization, and more. The first step in any good floor marking strategy is learning about the different types of floor markings available and what they are good for. Types of Floor Markings There are a variety of floor marking options to choose from. Each option is generally used in different areas or to accomplish different goals. Knowing all the available options for use in a warehouse is a great place to start for any floor marking strategy. In most cases, a facility will use more than one type of floor marking to accomplish its specific goals. Different types of floor markings are best for use in different areas. Having a properly considered strategy for what to use and where can help ensure the floor markings will provide the needed results. Floor Marking Tape Floor marking tape is one of the most popular options on the market today. Unlike traditional tape, this type is made using very strong materials such as vinyl and a strong adhesive to hold it to the ground. It can be used in high traffic areas and even run over with vehicles without any problems. Heavy-duty floor marking tape can last for years without having to be replaced. Another thing many companies like about floor marking tape is its affordability. Companies can use this type of floor marking throughout the warehouse without breaking their budget. It is easy to install and can even 12

be removed without much trouble if needed. All these perks have helped make floor marking tape an extremely popular option in warehouses around the world. Many types of floor marking tape are available: • Normal Floor Marking Tape - This tape comes in a large roll that can be applied in straight lines. It can be put down by hand or using an applicator to speed up the process. This is a great option for aisle ways and other long, straight lines. • Floor Marking Shapes – Floor marking shapes come in a variety of types including dots, footprints, and arrows. Having a large circle, for example, can be used to indicate where a trash bin should be placed. Arrows and footprints can direct people during an evacuation or instruct them to travel one way down a particular aisle. • Colored Floor Markings – A tape’s color can change its meaning. An aisle with red tape, for example, could indicate the items found there are flammable. There are many ways different colors of floor tape can be used, depending on a warehouse’s needs. • Reflective – Reflective floor marking tape reflects light back at its source. This is a great option for use in areas where indoor vehicles with headlights are used. It can also be used outside at night to improve visibility. • Glow-in-the-Dark Tape – For areas where lights are bright sometimes and dim other times, glow-in-thedark tape is a great option. This tape absorbs light energy while it is bright out and then emits a visible glow when it is dark. This is an excellent option for use during power outages or other potentially dangerous events. Floor Marking Paint Floor marking paint can be applied directly to the floor of a facility. This type of paint has been used in warehouses for years and is often ineffective. It is more time consuming to apply than tape since it needs to dry, and the installation process in general is somewhat more difficult. It can also be difficult to apply when custom shapes or designs are needed. Unlike like floor marking tape, floor marking paint can be very costly. One of the common problems with floor marking paint is it chips and peels easily when vehicles

SAFETY CORNER (CONT'D) ride over it, and then it needs to be reapplied. Floor Marking Lights A technologically advanced type of floor marking actually uses special lighting systems that project the desired marking onto the floor. This is a great option for temporary markings since they can be removed by simply turning off the projector. Floor marking lights are more expensive than tape or paint, and the ongoing expenses are somewhat higher because the light bulbs in the projector need to be replaced periodically. This type of marking, however, can be projected into any area and is ideal for dark places. Advanced floor marking light systems can be set up to display any image, including words, signs, and shapes. This makes this floor marking method one of the most flexible options available. Many facilities have one or two floor marking light systems to compliment the rest of their permanent floor marking strategy. Floor Markings for Safety One of the most important ways to use floor markings in a warehouse is for improving safety. Floor markings are intended to be highly visible, so they can get people’s attention when other options aren’t effective. Using floor marking arrows, for example, can help ensure that all the indoor vehicle traffic travels in the same direction down an aisle. This can minimize the risk of accidents between vehicles and can also alert pedestrians to the fact that vehicles may be traveling through. Facilities can use different colors or patterns for their floor markings to improve safety as well. As long as the strategy for improving safety using floor markings is well thought out and documented, it can be extremely effective. Even companies that have been using floor markings for years find the safety benefits continue to exist long after employees have gotten used to seeing the markings. People see the markings and somewhat subconsciously understand the safety message. Evacuation Routes One of the most important ways floor markings can be used to improve safety is by identifying evacuation routes. Having floor marking arrows of a specific color always pointing in the direction of the nearest emergency exit can be very helpful. Some facilities even use glow-inthe-dark tape so that if the power goes out during a fire or other emergency, employees will be able to more easily find their way out of the facility. 14

When using floor markings to identify evacuation routes, it is important to ensure that the markings are easily distinguished from all other floor markings. Whether this is done using specific shapes, colors, or types of markings, choose one option and use it throughout the facility. Floor Markings for Efficiency Improving the efficiency of a facility is extremely important. A warehouse that runs efficiently is more profitable, which is the end goal of any business. When employees waste their time trying to get things done inefficiently, it costs the company money. Floor markings that identify the steps a particular item needs to go through can be helpful. When something enters the facility, it may need to be checked in by the receivables department. This could be marked with a number one on the floor of the area. The next area may label the item with a bar code or RFID tag, and that station can be marked with a two. This process can go on until the item is placed on the shelves or even shipped back out. Using floor markings to make sure all employees know exactly where things are coming from and where they need to go will help avoid wasted time. It can also make it easier for the floor supervisors to ensure employees are always productive and not just walking around looking busy. Floor Markings for Organization All warehouse owners know that using numbered aisle signs can be helpful for identifying where items are stored. Floor markings can really take that concept to the next level. To start with, many facilities will use floor markings to apply the aisle number at each end of an aisle so that it is easily visible. These markings can then be used to place letters or other symbols along each section of the aisle to break it up further and make it easier to locate items. Since the floor markings are applied directly to the floor, they are easy to see while still being completely out of the way. Hanging signs can either be hard to see or get in the way of the upper shelving. Using Floor Markings in Business Strategies There are many business strategies popular in manufacturing and warehouse facilities. Many of the strategies were created by the Toyota Motor Company and have grown or been adapted to use in many other facilities. One of the things many of these strategies have in common is the reliance on visual communication. There

are few types of visual communication more effective than floor markings. The following are a few quick floor marking ideas for some of the most common warehouse improvement methodologies: • Gemba Walks - Floor markings can help identify the different work areas within the warehouse. Knowing where to go on a gemba walk can ensure no areas are missed and that the person doing the walks accomplishes what they set out to do. • 5S – The 5S methodology is all about improving organization and eliminating all types of waste from the facility. Floor markings can help accomplish this goal in many ways. Reducing wasted time by guiding people to where they need to go and improving safety are just two of the ways floor markings can be used for 5S. • Lean – Lean is another effective waste elimination strategy used in warehouses and other facilities. Applying floor markings to identify work areas and provide insights about how to follow established procedures can be very effective. There are many other business improvement strategies out there, and just about all of them can benefit from proper use of floor markings. Any facility thinking of implementing this type of strategy should look at how floor markings can help accomplish those goals. CREAMER'S CORNER

Make Cleaning “ FUN “ !!! When it was finally decided that our company was going to start a new division, I was the lucky one put in charge of this affair. We were going to branch out, as it were, to increase business. We were all going to make a lot of money if we just worked harder. Have you heard this one before? The branching out was still fuzzy to me and how much harder would my work be? I was kind of leary of this whole idea. The idea was to clean factories, especially the ones that just closed and were empty. It all sounds easy enough. Specifically, our company would sweep and scrub the floor in the factory. The idea sprang out of our sweeper / scrubber rental business which was growing by leaps and bounds. So, I agreed reluctantly to head this business endeavor. This was in the late 1980’s era when the economy was slowing down a bit. Remember in the 1992 election, one of the slogans was “it’s the economy stupid”. During this time, I started by getting the word out through various channels including informing auction houses. That is when it all began. We started getting cleaning jobs of some size. Some of the factories closing were in the 100,000K to 150,000K square feet range. We were contracted to clean the floors in these old closing factories that have been open for 100 years and never cleaned to any extent. Well, I had my trusted machines to clean with and thought this shouldn’t be too bad. The equipment I ran with at that time were about 4 pieces. All of the equipment was Tennant. The models range from the 265 ride sweeper, the old 525 scrubber and a 550 scrubber. I even had the 42HD walk-behind sweeper for areas that were hard to get into by the bigger machines. The very first cleaning job was a learning experience that I will never forget. Of course, this was a very old factory some 100 years old. This company produced chemical dies and the floor was so thick in areas with this material it just wouldn’t come up. If you have ever seen an old gas station where they worked on cars for years, and the oils had build up year after year, the floor was in that condition. So, I had to bring in the Tennant Model K4 Scrarifier. For those of you who can remember this equipment back that far, you will appreciate that finally the floor became clean. For those of you who do not remember the K4 machine, I will try to describe it. This equipment wasn’t large, it came in the “walk18

behind” design of a sweeper. However, the main brush was comprised of about 10 rods running width wise. On these rods were carbide hardened star cutters with a center hole to slide over the rods. Each rod contained some 100pc’s of this star cutter. This machine finally solved our problem to dirt built-up. Wow, was this a lesson to me in the future. Factory after factory, our group of people got very good at this. You learn time after time to get better. Some of these jobs were so bad they were just depressing for me. And I know how it would get my people down. It was filthy dirty work and not many people would do this type of work. So, I devised a plan to make cleaning fun. Before the job, we would discuss our plan of attack. This was necessary to accomplish the feat thoroughly with a speed of urgency. Attitude, I found, is everything. One of the incentives was that “if one just showed up and worked consistently until the job was completed, then that person would get a steak dinner on the company". Of course, the obvious incentive was making good money, which they did. But it was hard work. After two or three years, we had happy workers that made their work much as a game to complete the job. With the workers I devised a cleaning plan that would directly make the workers compete with each other, hence cleaning the factory that much faster and cleaner. I came to very much respect this group of people, for all of their dedication and hard work. That time in my life became a “life lesson”. It taught me that life will not always be a bed of roses, but you can have control over your own happiness. And no matter what you do for a living, try to make it fun! Thanks for reading. If you want to know more about the K4 Tennant machine of the past, send me an e-mail. michaelc@hi-gear.com Creamer’s Corner, Michael Creamer Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/ scrubber. First lightweight shipping pallet™ performs like wood Gaynes Labs completed testing on the new hybrid wood-corrugated NextPallet supporting 2400 lbs. At just 26.5 lbs., the heavyweight version of the NextPallet hauls and racks like much heavier wood pallets (see test results). And customers won’t have to pay up for this performance: the NextPallet will be priced competitively with wood pallets. It’s the only wood alternative that won’t force users to compromise on price or performance. Start-up NextPallet expects lightweight and standard versions will weigh between 15-19 lbs. The NextPallet delivers substantial savings to shippers who pay by weight. www.nextpallet.com

New radio remote controls for hoists and cranes J D Neuhaus (JDN) has further enhanced their remote control capabilities. Three remote control models are now available, RC-X, RC-S and RC-SP, each comprising of a transmitter and receiver and all can either be integrated in existing JDN solutions or directly combined with a new JDN hoist. One of the many advantages of the new JDN receiver is its rigid and extremely compact design. All components are housed in a space-saving, shock-resistant GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) casing featuring protection class IP65 (dust and water protected). A breathable membrane guides any condensation away from the interior to the exterior. The design also offers seawater-resistance for offshore applications. www.jdngroup.com

In motion truck scale weighs each axle & calculates total A new truck scale that will dynamically weigh each axle and print a receipt with individual axle weights and the total without requiring a driver to stop has been introduced by Alliance Scale, Inc. The Alliance axleWEIGH In Motion Truck Scale weighs individual axles by simply driving over the scale at ~3 MPH and also calculates total vehicle weight regardless of truck length or configuration. Easy to use, a driver stops at the controller, enters their known tare weight or truck I.D. to recall a stored tare weight in a single pass, or can use two-pass weighing and the controller will calculate the gross, tare, and net values. www.alliancescale.com

Shine bright with new lights from TVH TVH in the Americas (TVH) has introduced the new 100 LED series to their extensive line of beacons. Shine bright with these lights that feature 11 built-in flash patterns, a Class II rating for industrial uses, and a 1-year warranty. This new series has the same footprint as xenon style ML100 but include LEDs that allow for longer usage and lower current draw. The small footprint and higher voltage result in more application options for your vehicles. This Class II rating means that it is bright enough for outdoor usage but not so bright that it cannot be used inside. www.tvh.com

BUSINESS PROFILE

We Make Pallets Smarter

With the name “Green OX® Pallet Technology”, it’s reasonable to assume that we make pallets. And we do – we make fully recyclable corrugated cardboard pallets that weigh up to 80% less than traditional wood pallets. At scale, they cost less too. “Green” stems from the fact that our pallets and bulk bins reduce fuel use, waste, and truck movements (each of which represent cost savings). “Technology” because we have brought smarter engineering, production, and design to the pallet industry. For example, with Edson Machinery, a ProMach company, we built a one-of-a-kind assembly machine that vertically integrates our pallets within the manufacturing process. When Green OX came to market in 2015, a common refrain was “corrugated pallets don’t work”. With beta clients and licensing arrangements in Latin America, Africa and the U.S., minds have opened. Recently, our pallets successfully shipped >2,000 lbs in a sea container for more than two weeks. Today, discussions tend to focus on price and value. We like when the discussion goes there because it gives us the chance to explain how our pallets are a cost-annihilating transit system that solve real-world supply chain problems and save tens of millions of dollars per year at high volumes.

For example: Airfreight: Green OX pallets are estimated to save $30 million dollars for every 1 million pallets airfreighted from China vs. wood pallets that weigh 30 lbs. Shippers: For cube-outs, our pallets can increase productper-truck by 20%. For weight-outs, an additional 1,000 lbs of product can be added to each truck. In both cases, fewer trucks. Retailers: By switching its global supply chain from 100% wood pallets to 100% corrugated pallets, IKEA saved billions of dollars and cut its carbon footprint dramatically. We look forward to retailers stealing a page from IKEA’s very public playbook. Mexico Manufacturing: Wood pallets in Mexico cost extra because of heat-treatment requirements; corrugated pallets do not incur this added cost. Eliminating Reverse Logistics Costs: All logisticians understand that reverse logistics drive up cost and emissions. Other than the recycling truck that already comes to a customers’ facility, our pallets do not require reverse logistics. Pooled and GMA wood pallets require massive reverse logistics. In 2015, we looked at the wood pallet industry and asked: “what is the aggregate cost (both financial and environmental) of moving, landfilling or recycling, chipping, etc. two billion wood pallets that weigh 40-70 pounds apiece? How many trucks must be driven to the pickup point, loaded, driven out, and then unloaded for recycling or landfilling? (The answer is 5 million.) How much energy does this consume? How much pollution and greenhouse gas emissions result from this? Our analysis led us to a conclusion: the 20th Century pallet industry is ripe for disruption. Three years later, corrugated pallets are in their infancy, but the disruption is coming. Green OX is honored to lead this change by saving our customers money and solving the logistics headaches that keep our clients awake at night. It’s who we are. INDUSTRY NEWS

How to Be Certain Warehouse Documentation is OSHA Compliant OSHA rules and regulations can be confusing, so ensuring that your enterprise is OSHA compliant can be challenging without the right tools to guide you. For example, OSHA requires fleet safety inspections but states that documentation isn’t required — at least not until an accident happens and you must prove an inspection occurred. In other words, OSHA sort of requires documentation, but won’t ask for it until you are knee-deep in a safety investigation. That's not an ideal position to be in and lacking this documentation can be costly. Recently, OSHA increased maximum penalties for inspection violations, skyrocketing from $7,000 for a serious violation to $12,471 — an increase of 78 percent. Proving a facility is compliant With today’s regulations and reporting requirements, you should be ready if OSHA inspectors ask for any specific documentation. Is it easily accessible? Are you able to quickly file reports electronically? Do you know if all safety requirements have been met? Here are four ways telematics can solve these concerns: 1. Software documents safety protocols. • Safety checklists – Customizable questions ensure safe operation and telematics • Lockout/tagout – Locks a truck on impact so the vehicle cannot operate. OSHA reports that Lockout/Tagout features prevent about 120 fatalities and approximately 50,000 injuries each year. • Historical tracking – Records traffic issues by location, operator, or the vehicle involved to show patterns. 2. Qualifications and vehicle operations are monitored. • Operator certification records show who has completed training and when certifications expire. • Telematics locks a vehicle from use by uncertified/ unqualified drivers. • OSHA requires that drivers be retrained and recertified every three years, or after an accident or “near miss” resulting from unsafe behavior. Telematics tracks, schedules, and documents retraining initiatives. • Federal OSHA regulations require that operator training consist of both classroom and hands-on training. In the event of an impact, telematics can prove both took place. 3. Accident details are documented. • OSHA’s 301 accident report requires documented details on the “how” and “why” of any impact, including operator qualifications and the condition and maintenance data of the forklift(s) involved. • Telematics automatically documents all details as they occur. 4. Records are retained. • OSHA inspectors typically request the employer produce certain documents. All data collected by telematics remains on the server and can be accessed directly at any time, either from the production system or from the archived file. Simplify and assure compliance The repetitive nature of warehouse work and daily pressures sometimes leads to workers who take shortcuts or bypass safety measures to get the job done. Unfortunately, this can lead to costly accidents, injuries, and OSHA violations. But meeting OSHA’s requirements doesn’t have to be stressful or complicated. Telematic monitoring, analysis, and detailed documentation on fleet vehicles and driver behavior can protect and guide your enterprise, alerting you to issues before they become a violation or, even worse, an accident. ADVERTORIAL

What is a “Cloud Based Battery Service?” BattRecon LLC, has developed a new Cloud Based Battery Servicing System using their Model 6080 machine featuring the “Fleet-Tune” brand of artificial intelligence (A.I.). This patented state-of-the-art process has advantages when compared to a “conventional battery service,” such as portability, low cost, a rapid cycle completion speed, minimal technician labor and expertise, advanced diagnostics and prognostication features, with greatly improved battery runtime results. The “Cloud Based Operating System” is internet capable allowing two-way communication between the battery and the operator, which allows the operator located anywhere in the world to view the battery metrics and data in real time, then create machine instructions and commands to remotely control the battery servicing process. Whether sitting in traffic, or playing golf on Sunday afternoon, use your cell phone to check the battery status, change the process, or have someone switch the battery and begin another remote battery service! The BattRecon Cloud is the world’s only battery performance servicing database that collects, stores and compares battery service results in real time, in over 900 “like-kind” battery categories. Simply select the battery from the Auto-Sequence List and the computer automatically loads and begins the correct process for that battery. The subject battery’s results are compared in real time to the database of “like-kind” stored historical results, then modified during the process to ensure the maximum restoration results. Fleet-Tune A.I. reduces or eliminates technician training and experience requirements, while eliminating battery transportation costs! Fleet-Tune quickly tests and desulfates most batteries in about 5 minutes! Fleet-Tune applies an initial BattRecon pulse into the battery, varies that pulse applying a “stress test” to the battery, then measures and compares the battery’s performance to the historical database. The result is a Battery Health Indicator Value (BHI), which is displayed on the Cloud Dashboard and within the data set at the end of the process. This “BHI” tells you the relative performance health of the battery when compared to like-kind batteries that have been previously serviced and restored using the BattRecon Cloud. 34

The Fleet-Tune process has been shown to be a predictor of Battery Life Remaining (BLR). When the BLR value is used a predictor of the actual life remaining of the battery, it is subject to how the battery is used in the future. The predicted value will be more exact if the battery is operated within a normal battery operating environment, less exact if the battery operation is extreme. The Cloud Based Service has several options, 1) a full before and after charge-discharge testing process, 2) an “Optimization Mode” that automatically cycles between Charging and BattRecon desulfation, and 3) a 5-minute BattRecon desulfation and diagnostic process. All options provide a BHI Value for determining the performance condition of the battery. Cloud enabled devices significantly reduce technician labor and training, the most expensive part of battery service. Connect Fleet-Tune to a subject battery, select and click the appropriate “Auto-Sequence” tab on the cloud dashboard and you’re done! The BattRecon Cloud’s ability to compare your local subject battery to a worldwide database base of like-kind batteries, then modify that process during the process, will maximize the battery runtime compared to Conventional Service! The devices are lightweight and portable, allowing you to take the “battery shop to the warehouse,” rather than transporting batteries. Consider placing the machine at the client’s location and have them connect and disconnect the batteries using their electricity and labor, eliminate the transportation costs, and increase the client’s battery runtime on average about 25% compared to their existing conventional service results! As a “cafeteria plan,” you could leave a machine at the large volume warehouse operator allowing them to connect batteries at their discretion, while your in-house battery professional remotely supervises and invoices for the service process! Cloud based battery services have a lower marginal cost per battery cycle while providing greater battery performance and convenience for the client! Price your cloud-based services at conventional service pricing levels, while enjoying a higher return on investment than the competition! Contact BattRecon at 951-928-0595, or visit www.battrecon.com or www. fleet-tune.com for more information.
