General considerations for unloading trailers on loading docks

Loading docks are one of the busiest places in any warehouse operation. The American Supply Association reports that 25% of all industrial accidents occur at the loading dock. Many of these accidents can occur while loading and unloading a trailer.

Providing and reinforcing certified, OSHA-compliant safety training to workers and forklift operators which address hazards present at your specific facility (including the loading dock) and application will enhance workplace safety for both workers and forklift operators. Toyota recommends and encourages you to consult with a safety professional familiar with your environment and application of use to assess your forklifts, other material handling equipment, other equipment used in your operation, application and workplace and your safety rules to safely integrate forklifts into your workplace loading docks.

Here are some general safety considerations that should not be overlooked when creating a culture of safety on loading docks when unloading trailers.

Common Trailer Unloading Mishaps Clutter– Empty pallets, packing materials and other debris might be trip hazards for workers or cause slippage for your material handling equipment or become entrapped in, under, or around your material handling equipment. For pedestrians and operators alike, this is a point of concern as loading docks have a great deal of traffic including forklifts, warehouse equipment, and pedestrians.

One fundamental practice we use in Toyota facilities is that everything has a place or a home, and everything is put in its place or home. This practice has been effective in eliminating loading dock clutter. All employees know where “home” is for materials so tripping hazards don’t pile up. For example, Toyota facilities use receptacles for plastic wrap, and operators are required to immediately move empty pallets to proper storage 8

locations. Depending on your operation and workplace and material handling considerations, you and your safety consultant should work together to develop standard operating procedures based on your operational needs.

Slick Surfaces– Rain, sleet, snow and spills are some of the contributing factors that may lead to slick surfaces in or around a loading dock. This can cause a slip hazard for both pedestrians and material handling equipment unloading a trailer.

To minimize this risk, keep all surfaces on and surrounding your dock dry. Sweeping, mopping and use of floor fans or dryers can help maintain dry working surfaces. In the case of a spill, workers and operators should be trained on the proper steps to make sure that the spill is cleaned up and disposed of safety and appropriately. If it’s a hazardous substance, you should refer to all applicable rules, regulations and laws for safely cleaning and disposing of them. And remember, if the spill involved a forklift, OSHA requires that the operator be retrained.

Trailer Creep– Trailers can move substantially under the weight of a forklift driving back and forth between the trailer and dock. This is known as trailer creep and it’s a serious safety hazard.

Use of dock levers to bridge the gap between the trailer and loading dock, wheel chocks to prevent tractor and trailer wheel movement, and automatic trailer restraints are all ways to address this potential hazard. Once again, workers and forklift operators should receive safety training that includes the appropriate way to secure trailers at your facility.

Premature Departure– Trucks driving away before a trailer is fully unloaded is a serious concern. To minimize the potential of this occurring, clear communication between truck drivers, forklift operators, and dock managers is needed and should be a part of your safety training.

Like mentioned above, wheel chocks and automatic trailer restraints are also couple ways to reduce the likelihood of premature departure. Other ways include a lighting system that changes colors depending on the status of the unloading process or taking the truck drivers’ keys until the trailer is fully unloaded. These practices should be considered when augmenting a culture of communication and proper safety training and practices to enhance safety on and around loading docks.

Squeegees: What Material Should I Chose? What Material Fits my Needs?

There have been many articles regarding squeegees or its effect on the scrubber written by me in the past many years.

The central theme in all of these articles have been to assist the machine owner to get the best performance out of your cleaning machine. Today’s theme is to provide information about what type of squeegee material is best for your task at hand.

First let us talk about the various squeegees. On your typical rider scrubber, there are usually three squeegee assemblies. They are: #1. The Rear Squeegee Assembly #2. The Right-Hand Side Squeegee Assembly, and #3. The Left-Hand Squeegee Assembly.

With this being said, there are typically two squeegees per assembly. They go by different names such as front and rear, but I like to refer to them as inner and outer. These two terms are less confusing. Now listen to the two ways of saying the same thing. #1. I need the front rear squeegee or I need the inner rear squeegee. See what I mean. So, get in the habit of saying inner and outer and you will be better understood. With that out of the way, let us talk really quick about the maintenance of squeegees. Some people believe that once a squeegee is installed, there is nothing else to be done. Well is it not that simple.

Because there are maintenance items to be aware of. One of the items is what I call the “Post-Operation Clean-up. When the operator has completed his or her task, the machine is not just parked and left. There are certain post-operating items that should be done with regards to the maintenance of the machine.

First of all, the recovery tank (dirty water tank) should be emptied and flushed. But when it comes to the squeegee portion of the maintenance, this should be performed: #1. With a damp cloth, wipe off the squeegees, inner and outer, rear and left sides. This assures that anything foreign that was picked up during scrubbing will be removed along with any detergent or chemical coatings that may hinder the next scrubbing. #2. Don’t assume that because the squeegees were adjusted correctly when installed, that they remain correctly adjusted.

Remember to adjust “front to back” and “side to side”. Be vigilant to assure the proper height along the entire squeegee.

This will insure that the next scrub will be just as effective without problems, such as streaks.

#3. Finally, inspect all the rubbers for common wear and tear or for damage. Of course, if this is the case, they need to be replaced. When replacing the outer squeegee, replace the inner squeegee as well. This will maintain the integrity of the squeegee assemblies, hence good scrubbing consistency.

Now moving on to our topic of the different materials. So, why do we use different materials? We will explore this item by item.

Tan Gum Rubber: Most widely used squeegee material because of its tendency to conform to uneven floors and its property to gather water. It provides superior wiping action on tile, terrazzo and highly polished floors.

Red Gum Rubber: Very similar to tan gum with the exception of tensile strength. Provides the longest life on unfinished floors.

Neoprene: Has an excellent abrasion resistance. However, this material is the least on the chart of tear value. Its main advantage is value with respects that it has a very good rating in relation to oil, gas and acid resistance.

Urethane: I cannot say enough about urethane. By far the most superior material of them all. It has a high tear strength and great abrasion resistance. Fits very well in hot water applications along with chemical, oil and acid resistance applications. If I had to describe one disadvantage using urethane, it would be using this material in a very cold application, such as freezer. This material would simply stiffenup and not wipe properly. In a freezer, I would recommend Tan Gum. So, in closing, for the overhaul value, I would recommend Urethane in most cases. Thank you for reading, I appreciate it.

“TIP OF THE DAY: Before replacing the “outer rear squeegee” on your scrubber, be aware that there are four sides to this squeegee. So, when the blade is worn, simply turn the squeegee around so that the other side can be used. Once this is worn, then flip the squeegee over by now using the top of the blade and so forth. So, in actuality, the outer squeegee blade has four sides that should be use. How About That!!!

Workplace Design Influences Employee Engagement

Physical surroundings can shape employee behaviors, feelings and attitudes towards their experiences at work.

Research conducted on the many levels of employee engagement has also shown that employees who are highly satisfied with their workplace environment demonstrate higher levels of engagement.

In recent years, there has been a greater focus on the importance workplace design to increase in engagement, productivity and collaboration in the workplace. When you design a healthy and inviting workplace environment, employees reap health benefits simply by coming to work.

A healthy and engaging work environment can include a flexible layout, inviting lounge and break areas, healthy food options, good lighting and superior air quality. The addition of natural elements such as plants, water features and green materials help provide a healthy and calming atmosphere. At TVH’s Headquarters in Olathe, KS, a variety of plants decorate the hallways, and when finished, our recent renovation will include a green wall of moss, live vines on the terrace and a water feature in the atrium.

The physical, psychological and social effects of workplace design on our well-being may seem subtle but they are important building blocks in the foundation of enhancing employee engagement. Effective use of space opens up opportunity for creativity. It also allows different departments to come together and bounce off ideas and increased employee satisfaction and productivity. TVH offers a variety of different collaboration spaces to its employees including areas with unique seating and areas that are perfect for small groups to work on key projects.

Interior lighting, both natural light and LED interior lighting, can have significant effects on brain function and productivity. Poor lighting can cause eyestrain and headaches, 18

directly affecting not only the work performance of your employees but their health and wellbeing as well. TVH’s buildings, including the new addition, feature more windows than walls as well as a series of skylights in order to bring in more natural light.

It’s important to create an office interior that is designed to make employees feel more comfortable and healthy in the time they spend at work each day. Maximize your space by creating an open floor plan and incorporate cubicles with low walls so employees don’t feel closed off and isolated from one another.

Additionally, to help combat the sitting epidemic, utilize alternative work stations such as walking desks, cycle desks and standing desk to promote a healthier work environment. These alternatives help bring activity to a sedentary worker and is a great ROI for the company.

Office spaces aren’t the only areas that can be designed with employee engagement in mind. Warehouses can be made more inviting as well. In its warehouses, TVH has installed large windows to bring in sunlight and large 24-foot ceiling fans throughout the space to provide better circulation, ventilation and improved air quality.

A company’s biggest asset is its employees. By investing in a healthy and engaging workplace design, it sends a message to the employees that you care and want the work environment to be appealing, efficient and promote health, safety and wellbeing.

Strategic Triage: The Keys to Surviving a Significant Strategic Disruption Despite the best of intentions and a solid strategic plan, leaders can sometimes find their organizations in the throes of an unexpected major crisis that threatens their enterprise survival. an extinction level event. You need clarity to make rapid decisions. Your leadership activity must identify the most significant priorities necessary to stabilize your immediate situation so you can act on them. Your conversations need to engage candid dialog with your team.

1. Clarify the Key Decisions to Be Made Once you recognize you are in a strategic crisis, focus your critical thinking on the key decisions that will matter the most to resolving it. This includes gaining clarity to understand the underlying dynamics that led to the crisis. To do this, you need to rapidly obtain candid information about your true situation. How serious is this? Do you have the proper data to understand the magnitude of the crisis, and the options you have for addressing it?

Planning in a turbulent period requires a deep assessment of your business environment. This may be the time to bring in trusted advisors to provide you with insight about options to consider. Just make sure they have the depth of expertise to truly offer you options to resolve your crisis. You do not want to be part of their learning curve when the stakes are high.

Identify the critical strategic information you need to make decisions. Be clear about the outcome you desire. Do you want to save lives, save jobs or save money? This clarity will serve as your guide when you evaluate your options and choices.

Assess your assumptions and understand the market forces at play that will determine your ability to resolve the crisis.

Concentrate your critical thinking to focus on the things that matter most to resolving the short-term issue without blowing up your entire enterprise. Focus on the very heart of the key decisions you will need to make. Everything else is extraneous and a potential distraction when you are in the throes of a real strategic crisis.

2. Establish Clear Priorities The success of any Strategic Triage effort is to clarify the most significant short-term priorities. Developing clarity among all participants will help them stay focused on the activities which will work to immediately stabilize the situation. All too often, without a clear focus, if left to their own devices, team members will use their own judgment to focus on activities they deem important. Unfortunately, if they lack good critical thinking skills, they are likely to focus on efforts with minimal impact.

By taking control of your communications you will also be better able to manage your message and focus your talking points during the emergency.

HYSTER RECEIVES GRANT FOR FUEL CELL POWERED CONTAINER HANDLER FOR PORT OF LOS ANGELES

Hyster Company has announced the receipt of a grant from California Climate Investments (CCI) to support the development of a zero-emissions container handling truck powered by a Nuvera® fuel cell. The funding, awarded by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), part of CCI, the state of California’s climate change-fighting, capand-trade program, aims to help Hyster and its partners develop a zero-emissions container handler for an end-user in the Port of Los Angeles. To receive the award, recipients must meet defined business practices and overall rigorous performance measurement standards. These standards are reviewed and updated annually to represent the most critical business activities and performance excellence principles necessary to keep pace with evolving customer expectations and industry dynamics.

The Hyster® electric laden container handler entering development is intended to be powered by a Nuvera® fuel cell combined with a lithium-ion battery. This follows the news released in 2017 that a Hyster® H1150HD-CH container handling truck with fully electric motors and a large lithium-ion battery has entered the test phase.

“The right power option for a truck will always depend on the specific operation,” says Lyndle McCurley, Vice President, Big Truck Sales Americas for Hyster Company.

“Whereas the large lithium-ion battery is expected to suit those applications with a medium duty cycle where opportunity charging is possible, we anticipate the truck powered by a battery re-charged by an onboard fuel cell will better suit the challenges of this particular end-user in the Port of L.A.” The Hyster zero emissions top-loader with a fuel cell and 32

lithium-ion battery has the potential to effectively support applications with higher power consumption and a heavy duty cycle as the truck is expected to operate for a full day before requiring hydrogen re-fueling. As the truck can also operate for longer before battery re-charging is needed, this also supports operations with irregular break periods, where it may not be practical to plan in battery charging throughout the day.

Hyster aims to offer the fuel cell and battery powered Container Handler with a choice of charging options. The model in development is expected to utilize fully integrated wireless fast charging.

“Hydrogen and grid power provide complementary power solutions for ports,” says McCurley. “Where the requirements to power a fleet of electric Big Trucks are likely to exceed power capabilities of the grid, hydrogen may provide ports with readily available energy without a requirement for a high capacity electric charging infrastructure.”

“Electric charging for a large number of trucks during the day also adds complexity to overall work planning in the terminal, which can be avoided using hydrogen,” he continues, explaining that with hydrogen fuel cell technology, Hyster expects the Big Truck in development to offer ‘clean’ energy with zero emissions, as well as a low cost of ownership and comparable performance to its diesel equivalent.

The new fuel cell-powered truck is also expected to benefit from the patented Hyster energy recovery systems revealed earlier in 2018 at the TOC Europe event in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. By recovering and storing energy from lowering loads and braking, Hyster electric container handling trucks are expected to support an extended drive cycle, providing longer operating time before recharge is necessary. The innovative systems aim to increase uptime and profitability for port applications while also helping to reduce energy costs for charging.

SHOPPA’S APPOINTS NEW CORPORATE PARTS MANAGER

Shoppa’s Material Handling, one of the largest Toyota forklift distributors throughout DallasFort Worth, North Texas and Kansas City, MO., announced today the appointment of Jeff Moncrief in the role of Corporate Parts Manager for Shoppa’s Material Handling “With Jeff’s extensive experience in parts management, he will be a great fit for the Shoppa’s team,” says Jim Shoppa, President, Shoppa’s Material Handling. “We are looking forward to welcoming him and his family to Texas.”

After retiring from the U.S. Marines Corps in 2003, Moncrief attended Indiana University and was awarded a Bachelor of General Studies degree in 2007. He then received a Masters of Business Administration degree in 2009 from Ashford University in Iowa. He comes to Shoppa’s from 19th Capital Group in Indianapolis where he was Corporate Operations Manager – Parts and Inventory.

Moncrief says Shoppa’s is a good fit for him because his management style is in sync with Toyota’s “kaizen” employee engagement. Learning, focusing on process improvement and finding ways to increase revenue are his plans for his immediate future at Shoppa’s. After working for Toyota Material Handling U.S.A. in Columbus, he says he knew that Shoppa’s was a part of a proven winning team in Toyota.

With 13 years working in parts at all levels, Moncrief says he has performed every role he will be supervising.

“I’m always looking for ways to challenge myself and grow the company,” he said. “This is completely in my wheelhouse. I’m excited for the opportunity and ready to get rolling.”

Moncrief and his wife have three sons and enjoy sports, music and spending time together.
