SAFETY CORNER

Forklift Weather Protection While Working in a Winter Wonderland Winter is coming! And while you likely don’t have to worry much about an army of the undead descending upon you, you still have to prepare yourself (if you’re an operator), associates (if you’re a supervisor), facility, and forklifts for the harsh weather conditions ahead. Winterizing your fleet and facilities is no small task and it can have serious long-term impact if you don’t take the right forklift weather protection steps before snow piles up. So where to start? There are several areas of an operation to consider as the cold arrives. Forklift Weather Protection in your Facility This one’s pretty obvious, but if your operation involves working outside, then the wintery conditions are going to affect you significantly. Whether it’s freezing rain, snow, or anything in between, you need to have procedures in place for how and when it is appropriate to work in these types of environments. What types of hazards does this present for your application? Do you have ramps or pathways that could be particularly icy or dangerous to traverse? Is there danger of your product being damaged if exposed to these elements? What effect does the weather have on your visibility? Forklift weather protection is all about understanding the severity of the weather and its impact to your entire operation; that’s key to proper decision making. Make sure to never operate a forklift in any dangerous conditions and to only travel as fast as the conditions will allow. Forklift Weather Protection for Employees The safety of all associates is paramount. This starts with making sure operators and pedestrians are dressed appropriately for the weather by wearing extra layers and covering up their extremities as needed. If you’re an operator, make sure you take responsibility and let your supervisor know your needs. Gloves, coats, socks, boots, and ear muffs are but a few additional items to consider. When visibility is adversely affected by the weather, it’s also a good idea to wear high visibility clothing such as safety vests to help ensure high visibility. However, remember that safety is the most important thing here. Any additional clothing or gear operators wear should not impair their ability to perceive their environment (e.g. hearing or sight restrictions) or operating ability (e.g. limited mobility or ability to operate controls) We talked about setting procedures for how to handle 8

November 2018

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

cold weather conditions, but it’s just as important to keep your employees informed of these procedures. Hosting daily meetings before each shift to evaluate current and expected weather conditions is a useful practice. This helps to ensure that everyone is on the same page prior to beginning their work day and allows you to develop a forklift weather protection action plan catered to the specific conditions for that day. It can also help you to reinforce good pre-operation checks. Having proper fluid levels, tire conditions, and other standards satisfied will help your operators stay safe during this time of year. If you’re an operator, this is definitely a process worth bringing up to your manager. Forklift Weather Protection for your Forklifts Does your forklift have an enclosed operator compartment and a heater/defroster? If you’re operating outdoors, and as long as the compartment doesn’t hinder perception of the working environment (fog glass, inability to hear, etc.), features like these can go a long way to keep operators warm, comfortable, and productive. It can also help make sure the operator controls and seats stay in top working condition. What about cold start aids such as engine block heaters and coolant preheaters? Are you using batteries that are designed to work or be charged in cold conditions? If you can’t even get your forklift started, you’re not going to get very much work done. Even if your forklift is properly equipped, you still need to properly maintain it to keep it up and running throughout the winter. This starts with scheduling preventative maintenance with an authorized Toyota dealer prior to the start of cold weather and having regularly scheduled maintenance throughout the year. Proper battery care and maintenance is equally as important. Maintaining proper water levels and limiting exposure to cold weather as much as possible are two general rules of thumb for electric forklifts. Cold weather can greatly reduce battery life and battery run time so you should prepare for how this might affect your productivity ahead of time. Consider your battery charging options and number of batteries on-hand to help reduce potential downtime. CREAMER'S CORNER

Non-Skid Tires for Scrubbers The Dramatic Story! Good morning someone said, as Jimmy slowly opened his eyes. Where am I? What happened? Still dazed, he heard in the distance,” you were involved in an accident at work last night”. You see Jimmy worked the night shift. Then the pain set into his mind. Wow, what is that pain, my legs hurt so much. Of course, the medication helped, but without it, he would be screaming. But he doesn’t realize yet to what extent his legs were crushed. You see Jimmy was an innocent bystander of an accident that should have not happened. That evening, Jimmy was going on shift as many thousands do every evening. We go on throughout our lives without realizing that there are many people like Jimmy working all night at factories that make our lives better and/or easier. Companies such as manufacturers, food processors and shipping / logistics help us with our lives in every way. So, when Jimmy started his shift, he was unaware what

the evening would transpire. It could have been a PowerBoss, Tennant, NilfiskAdvance or even a Karcher rider scrubber that had the accident. The machine isn’t the point and it matters not. It was the tires installed the day before that created the perilous situation. Yes, the scrubber needed new tires. They were worn to the point it became dangerous. However, no one ever dreamed that because of new tires, it became an even more dangerous situation. But, it did. So, let’s start in the beginning of this tale so there is a better understanding of exactly what occurred. During the day shift at this particular factory, new tires were being installed on the scrubber. It wasn’t a new scrubber, but only two years old with about 800 hours on the machine. It was a new buyer at the factory that purchased these tires without doing his due diligence. He didn’t look into what type of tire should be installed on a rider scrubber. All he knew was that he saved a lot of money

with the purchase and it would reflect favorably upon him. But what no one realized was this is a rider scrubber. Not a sweeper but a scrubber. This is a machine that puts a combination of detergent solution and water on the surface and then the brushes agitate the surface before being vacuumed up by the rear squeegee assembly. Isn’t it common sense that the floor surface would be slippery? Let me explain it this way. If you were to put a little bit of Dawn Detergent on the floor mixed with a little of water and then walk on it , wouldn’t you slip and fall ? Of course, you would. Or if you walk into a public bathroom and the cleaning people just mopped the floor. Don’t they put signs that say: Caution, wet floor! Of course, they do. That evening Jimmy was walking from one part of the factory to another. He was in the properly marked walkway. He was not in the aisle. When the scrubber was coming down the main aisle he was going faster than recommended, he was in a hurry and then he made a sharp left. The machine turned somewhat and started sliding. The operator had no control of the direction of the machine. The machine slid into the wall sideways pinning Jimmy between the wall and the machine. It crushed his legs. He immediately passed out. If it weren’t but for a couple of quick minded workers tying a tourniquet on to the upper part of his legs, he might not have survived this horrific accident. Why did this happen? It was ultimately agreed upon that it was the new tires that were just installed on the scrubber. You see, a scrubber will slide just as you would slip on a wet floor in that public bathroom. What can be done about this? Three points I would like to make. #1. There are special “Non-Skid” tires on the market that should be installed on scrubbers. These non-skid tires have what it is referred to as “P7 Compound” and will satisfy any urge to slide. #2. Another point I would like to make is the type of traction on the tire. I would recommend a “Cross-Cut” style tread on the tire if it is available. This type of tread helps move the water/detergent away from the tire to help keep it from sliding. #3. Buy a scrubber with the traction/steer tire in the front of the machine. You see the majority of scrubbers are designed with three wheels. Further, these

wheels consist of two idler wheels and one traction/ steer wheel. These machines either have the two idlers in front and the traction/steer in the back of the machine or the traction/steer tire in the front with the two idlers in the back. Why am I discussing this make-up? Because it matters. Think about this. With the traction/steer tire being in front, the water/detergent never touches this wheel. With the traction/steer tire in the rear, this wheel is in the heart of the water/detergent, hence more acceptable to slippage. Keep this in mind when purchasing a scrubber. And when purchasing tires, be aware that it matters what type of tires are installed on a scrubber. It just goes back to; know your parts supplier and can you trust him in providing the correct part. There could be consequences. With all of this being said, the story is just that, “A Dramatic Story”. It never happened. There is no “Jimmy”. But it can happen and has happened. TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Attitude of Gratitude While the stresses of everyday life can make it difficult to enjoy every moment, it’s important to realize that our thoughts are powerful. They affect our actions and drive our emotions. Take the Gratitude Challenge and begin to think and speak gratitude. The first step toward more positive thinking is to listen to your self-talk. If you experience negative thoughts, worst case scenarios, regrets or “what ifs”, challenge them and become your biggest supporter with a voice of kindness, motivation, appreciation and acceptance. At TVH, we offer a program with 40-weeks of Wellness with Coach Lucy and each class begins with a gratitude story. Gratitude puts things in perspective and is the best way to break the chain of entitlement while increasing appreciation. When things are not going well, it’s hard to see the positive when you feel stuck with obstacles surrounding you and fear “what if”. This is the precise time to be

grateful. Not grateful for what has you stuck, but appreciation for what doesn’t. Gratitude helps you to see your situation in a way that can open up your thinking to new solutions. We are not hardwired to be grateful, this is a learned life skill. Each day provides ample training. Practicing gratitude can make you happier. There are three stages to develop and enhance an attitude of gratitude: 1. Recognizing what we’re grateful for. Gratitude puts situations into perspective. When we can see the good as well as the bad, it becomes more difficult to complain and stay stuck. 2. Acknowledging what we’re grateful for. The awareness of what we’re grateful for can lessen our tendency to always want more. 3. Appreciating what we’re grateful for. Dematic Introduces Freezer-rated Narrow Aisle Reach AGV

The new CUV85 and CUV105 D utility vehicles boast a four-wheel independent suspension system with a front sway bar to provide unmatched stability at full load. A long swing-arm suspension, customtuned springs and shocks deliver a balance between a smooth ride and hauling loads. Ample ground clearance ensures these vehicles navigate rough terrain with ease. Features such as smooth acceleration, clear sightlines and engine braking capability make the Cat UTV well suited for hauling and towing. The intuitive column shifter allows the driver to easily maneuver through all the gears. Both models feature a continuously variable transmission, tuned specifically for work applications, offering smooth transitions and the ability to handle loads. www.cat.com

With a lift height that can access five levels of racking in a typical warehouse, a 2,500-pound load capacity, and a reach mechanism to handle doubledeep racking, the AGV is well-suited for automating operations in existing freezer distribution facilities. “Automated guided vehicle systems are an attractive solution for automating existing freezer storage warehouses that are manually operated today,” says Nathan Wolf, Director of Mobile Automation, North America, Dematic. “Companies can implement freezerrated AGVs as an automated picking solution with minimal infrastructure changes and related costs.” www.dematic.com

BUSINESS PROFILE

KION Warehouse Systems celebrates 125th anniversary KION Warehouse Systems (KWS), one of the oldest companies in the greater Reutlingen area, celebrates its 125th anniversary on September 15. A gala event with guests of honor Barbara Bosch, Reutlingen's mayor, Dr. Eike Böhm, KION's Chief Technology Officer, and Dr. Henry Puhl, President of STILL GmbH, will kick off the celebrations, which will be followed by a family day at the site in Reutlingen-Mittelstadt. Around 380 employees currently work at KWS, which serves as the KION Group's center of excellence for very narrow aisle trucks (VNAs). The site's origins can be traced back to the late 19th century and the founding of Ernst Wagner Apparatebau in 1893. The company soon recognized the potential of the growing market for logistics solutions and developed an extensive product portfolio. It was a leading innovator in the warehouse truck market in the 1980s and 1990s, when the company's automated guided vehicle systems raised its profile around the world. As a logistics pioneer, the company has had a considerable influence on the automation trend now known as Logistics 4.0. This pioneering role brought the company to the attention of Linde AG, which acquired a 100 percent stake in 1991 and made the company part of its Hamburg-based subsidiary STILL in 1996. Over the following years, the company manufactured sit-on, stand-on, and reach trucks for STILL and order picking stacker trucks for Linde and STILL. In 2004, the flagship VNA, the MX-X (manup), was fully redesigned and launched on the market. Its modular design allowed customers to create a truck to match their individual requirements - a unique feature at the time. Following the spin-off of the material handling division from Linde AG in 2006, the Reutlingen site became part of the newly established KION Group AG, a global provider of supply chain solutions, forklift trucks, warehouse technology, and related services. KION expanded the plant in Reutlingen into a multibrand site in 2010, and KWS became the center of excellence for VNAs. The KWS plant was the first to develop and produce VNAs for multiple KION brands and has become a role model for other sites in the Group. There has been continual investment in machinery since 2010, and thanks to the site's 40-strong development department KWS now has one of the most modern VNA fleets on the 24

market. The latest product, the modular MX-X/K combi truck, enjoyed a highly successful launch in spring 2018. Just under 1,000 units have been sold since the model went on sale. As always, the trucks manufactured in Reutlingen come in manual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic versions and meet the requirements of Logistics 4.0 in full. The offering from KWS includes worldwide technical support for the VNAs and is complemented by the KION VNAAcademy. Established in 2012, the academy provides training for service technicians and sales people from the KION brand companies STILL and Linde. The academy's training is being extended to other regions and is now also available in China and South America. Around 700 service technicians and sales representatives are trained in Reutlingen every year. Since a strategic realignment, the volume of units produced annually has increased by more than 50 percent. This success is also reflected in the number of employees, which has increased by around a quarter in the past years. At its Mittelstadt site, KWS also provides training for mechatronics fitters, skilled metal workers and industrial clerks, and participates in the 'Reutlingen Model' BEng degree program. Barbara Bosch, mayor of Reutlingen: "KION Warehouse Systems evolved from a long-established local business. The long history of the company is testament to the innovative strength of the city and of its residents. I am particularly pleased that we have an international market leader like KION based here whose products - made in Reutlingen - are sold around the world." Marc Lehnstaedt, managing director of KION Warehouse Systems: "The fact that the company is celebrating its 125th anniversary underlines its ability to continually reinvent itself and adapt to changing conditions. In recent years, the trend towards a global flow of goods and the growing importance of e-commerce has led to a sharp rise in demand for VNAs made in Reutlingen. The global sales network of KION's Linde and STILL brands allows us to sell our products around the world. We are proud of our product portfolio and of our leading role within the KION Group. I would like to thank our employees, whose support and ideas make us such a successful company." For more information please visit our website - www.kiongroup.com

INDUSTRY NEWS

DHL RESEARCH SHOWS 75% OF COMPANIES BELIEVE INVESTMENT IN GROUND TRANSPORTATION WILL DIRECTLY SUPPORT GROWTH DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, today launched its latest research report on ground transportation logistics. The report reveals that the fast-paced evolution underway in the sector is changing the way that shippers think when purchasing a transportation solution. The global survey of transport buyers and operations professionals found that 83 percent of businesses are willing to pay more for better and value-added services as long as they provide a measurable return on their investment. “The logistics transport evolution: the road ahead” is a report by DHL Supply Chain, using data from research by Lieberman Research Worldwide, LLC (LRW) that was commissioned by DHL to identify the factors that are impacting ground transportation logistics and how industry is adapting to the new frontier of solutions available. The report found that across sectors and regions, companies are increasingly viewing ground transportation as being more than a tactical commodity, with 71 percent now considering it to be a strategic component of their businesses. Companies agree there is a direct correlation between ground transportation and business performance with three quarters (75 percent) believing investing time and resources in ground transportation will directly help their company sales. Jim Monkmeyer, President of Transportation, DHL Supply Chain said: “Customer expectations for almost instantaneous delivery born of e-commerce are helping to position ground transportation as an important service differentiator. This is compounded by the increase in urbanization, or major population influxes to urban areas as we’re seeing here in North America, congesting traditional transportation models and causing executives to rethink their approach to distribution in this modern era. For all these reasons, transportation conversations are happening now at the C-suite table.” According to the report, the exponential growth of e-commerce and its implications on service was identified by 65 percent of companies as having a significant impact on their supply chain in the next one to two years. To manage this evolution, executives are turning to technology to empower their strategic decision making. Monkmeyer added: “As we learned in our digitalization research earlier this year, these studies emphasize the need for visibility tools and technology to not only manage goods, but also ensure a positive experience for the end-customer. Platforms that enable end-to-end supply chain monitoring and risk management, such as DHL’s MySupplyChain and Resilience 360, are now essential components of successful and strategic business operations.” Although these changing dynamics are being witnessed across regions, variations can also be identified depending on the maturity of the market and the demands placed on shippers from their consumer base. In Latin America, the priority consideration in selecting a ground transportation provider is on time delivery while in Europe, where the market is more mature, optimization of networks is the key focus for shippers. Broader societal factors were also highlighted as presenting associated 26

challenges, with 61 percent of companies referencing the increase in urbanization as a factor that will significantly impact their future business. Technology and its ability to help manage this complex environment is increasingly seen as a standard requirement of 3PLs: more than two thirds (67 percent) of companies believe that big data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) are services that are essential for 3PLs to offer their shipper customers.

NEW RESEARCH FINDS NEARLY 80% OF ENTERPRISES EXPERIENCE MIDSHIFT MOBILE DEVICE BATTERY FAILURE A sneak peek at a yet-to-be-published VDC Research study shows that for enterprise mobile devices, mid-shift battery failures occur far more often than previously believed. Such failures represent a major impediment to employee productivity, and result in significant financial losses for retail and logistics businesses that rely on batterypowered devices. To solve the battery-failure epidemic, Global Technology Systems (GTS) today launched Batteries-as-a-Service (BaaS), the first-ever mobile-power managed-service offering, and uncontested solution to support enterprises suffering from financial losses due to poor battery management. “Batteries that support enterprise business-critical mobility applications fail 30 percent of the time, causing workers to lose, on average, up to 50 minutes of productivity,” said David Krebs, Executive VP, Enterprise Mobility & Connected Devices at VDC Research. “For an enterprise supporting 500 mobile workers, for example, this productivity hit can translate into $1M of lost profit each year.” BaaS allows customers to gain control over these mismanaged assets and save millions of dollars per year. GTS provides its battery management services, which includes GTS’ on-site battery inventory analysis and removal of dangerous bad batteries, for as little as $0.05 per battery per shift. GTS CEO Larry Murray explained the benefits of BaaS this way: “The benefits of BaaS to our customers are significant. We help them to cut costs and control budgets. We also convert their random battery purchases into an organized process providing much needed predictably and inventory control. They never buy a replacement battery again, and they can replace CAPEX with OPEX to improve cash flow. Moving to an outsourced managed battery subscription service should be an easy decision for companies in retail, transportation or logistics that rely on battery-powered devices to run their businesses.” BaaS features include: Test & Replace™ – Easily and efficiently identify, remove and replace bad batteries using the GTS Tester and Mobile app onsite resulting in dramatic cost savings due to replacing batteries only when and where they are needed. Test & Replace also offers post-test management reports with actionable insights for future planning and budgeting purposes. Battery Color Coding™ – Identify, replace, and recycle only aging batteries swiftly and efficiently by using a unique color each year instead of the traditional battery color, reducing the amount of bad batteries in circulation. Free Recycling – No-cost recycling program ensuring potentially dangerous Lithium batteries do not end up in landfills creating toxic

UNICARRIERS AMERICAS ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 2017 AFTERMARKET EXCELLENCE AWARDS UniCarriers Americas Corporation (UCA) today announced the winners of its Aftermarket Excellence Program (AEP) Awards, for the past fiscal year, ending March 31, 2018. The AEP is designed to recognize UniCarriers dealers who have achieved excellent performance in aftermarket parts and service. In 2017, seven new dealers attained platinum level, the AEP’s highest honor. The AEP challenges UCA dealers to excel in performance standards across eight categories, including business planning, employee training, factory support and customer satisfaction. Each category has a maximum point value that dealers can earn in order to reach four possible award levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum. The end-result provides dealers with higher service margins, improved parts sales, more efficient work order processing, stronger customer retention, and in-turn, greater and sustained profitability. The program was first established in 1995 as the Service Excellence Program to provide dealers with tools to implement best-in-class principles covering technical and customer service practices. In 2014, UCA enhanced the program as the AEP to include parts operation metrics, allowing for a more comprehensive aftermarket program. “We want to set our dealers up for success, and the AEP was created with that goal in mind,” said Kevin Fick, Director of Aftermarket Sales for UniCarriers Americas Corporation. “All of the award winners have demonstrated they are prepared to go above and beyond to achieve exceptional performance across multiple principles, which provides an opportunity for sustainable and profitable growth.” The following dealers are recipients of the 2017 Aftermarket Excellence Program awards: Platinum Level: A.D. FEATURE STORY

Aftermarket Parts Gives You More Choices Your warehouse productivity has a significant effect on your bottom line. Downtime due to an inoperable machine, especially in the material handling industry, is extremely expensive. One way to reduce downtime is to perform regular maintenance, which will extend the life of your equipment and ensure a more reliable performance. The question is what parts do you use to keep your machines in tip-top condition, aftermarket or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts? Ensuring you purchase the correct one for your machine can be vital to the success of your business. However, before you make that decision, it is important to remember that the quality, variety and availability of aftermarket parts can be better than the OEM. You Have More Choices Today, there are a wide variety of aftermarket manufacturers to choose from, who make products ranging from tires to lights and everything in-between. As a result, you have more options to choose from if you opt to buy

aftermarket parts for your equipment. A big selection offers you the added benefit of convenience, as you’re more likely to find the aftermarket version of the part you need in stock and ready to ship. However, if you’re not familiar with today’s aftermarket brands, the sheer selection of the millions of parts available could be overwhelming. To help make the process easier be sure to work with a reputable parts supplier that is knowledgeable and has experience with the aftermarket parts industry. Aftermarket Parts Can Be the Same or Better Quality than the OEM As the aftermarket parts industry has grown significantly over the last few years, so has the quality of the product. Aftermarket parts from respected brands offer a strong, reliable alternative and are often the same or better quality than some of the OEM parts on the market today. In many cases, by choosing an aftermarket part, you can end up with a better part than you started with. Quality Parts that Help the Bottom Line Aftermarket parts are oftentimes less expensive than their OEM counterparts. How much you save varies from product type and brand. It’s important to do your research however, depending on the part you need, you could save hundreds of dollars if you opt for an aftermarket brand. It may seem too good to be true that someone could provide a better part than the company that originally assembled your machine. Rest assured, no matter which brand or model of machine you own, there are a wide variety of quality, cost effective aftermarket parts to choose from to help get your equipment up and running.
