SAFETY CORNER
Winter safety Temperatures are dropping, and the leaves are almost finished falling to the ground. With winter right around the corner, it’s important to evaluate the safety of your facility, and whether or not you’re ready for the hazards winter brings. If your company has employees working outdoors during the winter or in cold environments, you should have an understanding of cold stress. Any worker exposed to cold air temperatures is at risk of cold stress and it can have very serious health consequences for workers. Cold stress occurs when the body can no longer maintain its normal temperature and leads to more dangerous conditions like hypothermia, frostbite, and trench foot. These conditions are extremely serious and, in some cases, could result in amputation or even death. It is important to remember that cold stress doesn’t only happen in freezing temperatures, but in working environments with low temperatures (below 50_F), high wind speed, contact with cold surfaces or water, and inadequate clothing. A combination of these factors can cause cold stress, not just freezing temperatures. There are a number of preventative measures an employer can take to keep workers safe and comfortable when working in cold environments. Below are some strategies recommended by OSHA and NIOSH to protect workers from hazards: • Schedule frequent breaks for workers to warm back up in a heated area • Serve warm non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic drinks • Provide proper personal protective equipment for workers • Schedule work to be done during the warmest part of the day • Save maintenance jobs and repairs for the warmer months in the year • Use a variety of engineering controls, like radiant heaters Employers are required under OSHA to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers, and this can often include providing protective clothing for cold environments. For colder conditions and working outside, consider fleece balaclavas to keep the face, neck, and ear protected from the freezing temperatures. Workers should wear several layers of loose clothing for better insulation and circulation. Workers should have boots that are both waterproof and insulated. It would also be 8

beneficial for workers to carry extra cold weather gear like an extra pair of socks, gloves, hats, jacket, blankets, and a change of clothes. First aid kits at the facility or work site should include a thermometer and chemical hot packs. Employers and/or safety managers should be aware of cold stress symptoms and identifying them in workers. Another important measure that can be taken by employers and safety managers is to provide cold stress training for workers. This way workers can understand worker risk, prevention, symptoms, the importance of monitoring themselves and fellow coworkers for any possible signs and symptoms of cold-related hazards. Other winter safety Even if workers are not working outdoors this winter or completing work in a cold environment, it can be beneficial to learn other safety measures you can take. The cold winter weather often brings ice to your sidewalks, walkways, shipping docks, and other walking surfaces. The number of slips, trips, and falls in the workplace dramatically rise every winter as walking surfaces become slicker. Inform workers about wearing slip-resistant footwear during this time of year. Ensure walkways are kept clear of snow and ice by clearing them daily or de-icing them with sand or salt. When workers come in the building with wet shoes and track it indoors, these areas can often become a slipping hazard. Post a “CAUTION: Wet Floor” cone to alert workers and clearly mark or barricade these hazardous areas. Road conditions can also pose a risk to workers traveling to their job. Remind workers driving to work can be dangerous and to be aware of icy conditions on the road. Giving advice on driving safely in winter conditions and promoting safe driving practices can ensure your employees will get to work safely. If your parking lot is notorious for icing up, spread rock salt to keep cars from slipping around. With winter upon us, it is important to remember those working in cold environments and driving in icy conditions to get to work. Keep workers safe this season by understanding the symptoms of cold stress, ensuring the walkways in your facility are safe and de-iced, and promoting safe driving practices for workers. CREAMER'S CORNER
Sweeper Brush Chamber : Are My Skirts Showing ? It has stood “the test of time”. At least in my opinion. When a sweeper’s basic design has not changed in 45 years (since the year 1973), I think it is a fair statement. The model has changed somewhat over the years from generation to generation, but it is the basis of the original. And here is that design in motion. As the machine moves forward the side brush moves the dirt and debris into the center of the sweeper. At this point the main brush sweeps/directs all the debris into the debris hopper. The large pieces of debris remain at the bottom of the hopper whereas the vacuum(suction) motor sucks the light dust/particles into the hopper filter. Every other sweeper has copied this design down through the ages. It is a proven design. And what is this sweeper and who makes it? It is the Tennant Model 92 Ride-On Sweeper. And the generations are as follows. Starting with the Model 92 in 1973. This sweeper started with the four cylinder Jeep and F163 Continental engines.
The diesel engine, if required, was the 4-cylinder Perkins Model 4.108. Then the next generation was the Model 95. Still basic to the Model 92, we are starting to see some electronics being introduced into the design, such as a side brush actuator. So instead of a level to operate the side brush, the operator would just push a button to control the up and down and the off and on. Next we have the Model 97, still that basic design of the Model 92. From this point on the Model number type changed to the Model 800. Some more things have changed such as instead of a filter bag being used a filter box or “panel filter” is now used in the hopper box. All of these refinements and modifications we still see in today’s Tennant Model 810. Still true to the original Model 92, it is Tennant’s largest ride-on industrial sweeper still being made. Moving on we want to talk about the design of the main brush vacuum chamber, which was incorporated

into the first sweeper. In this design, there exists rubber skirts positioned around the main broom to create a vacuum chamber to allow the vac motor in the hopper to vacuum the debris with the help the main broom. If there are streaks of debris behind the machine while it is moving forward sweeping, then there exists a problem with the function. Maintenance needs to be done to be determine what the cause. So basically, it is not picking up all the debris. However, a telltale sign is that these are streaks. The streaks are the sign of the nature of the problem. If it were large portions of areas not being swept, I may determine that the main broom or vacuum system is damaged, but with streaks, it could only be one factor. The skirts are damaged in such a way to allow streaks to occur. This could be tears in the skirt or areas of skirting missing to allow such streaks. These tears also allow air into the chamber, reducing the amount of vacuum required for sweeping. So get under the machine and see if “my skirts are showing “. Make sure there are no tears or damage to them. You can also remove the main broom on the side of the machine and look into the chamber from this angle. And if the skirts are damaged, replace immediately. If one were to read the maintenance chart on the sweeper, one would observe that inspecting the skirts should be done every 8 hours of sweeper; so basically, a daily event or at least every other day. I hope this has been informative. Thanks for reading every month. I appreciate it. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advice, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/ scrubber. A Go-To Guide for Forklift Maintenance Agreements
Equipment downtime is your operation’s worst enemy. Just like a car or house, a forklift requires maintenance and repairs after you purchase it. Taking a reactive approach to maintaining your forklifts can be accompanied by uncertainty and unexpected periods where forklifts are out of service. This can interrupt work flows that need to run smoothly for your business to succeed. This is why many companies that use forklifts opt for a routine maintenance plan. The two most commonly used maintenance plans in the material handling business are planned maintenance agreements and full maintenance agreements (also referred to as guaranteed maintenance). Both plans are designed to maintain equipment uptime, be proactive on potential repairs before breakdown, and ultimately save you money in the long-run. But what is the difference between a planned maintenance agreement and full maintenance agreement? We break that down right here for you.

Proactive with Planned Maintenance Detailed inspections. Recommended repairs. Flexible billing. Tailor-made schedule. In my experience at a Toyota forklift dealership, these were expectations that come with a planned maintenance agreement. Many service providers have a detailed point inspection checklist the technician uses to inspect repair needs, potential safety risks, wearable items, and routine replacement parts. As technicians work through the checklist, he or she documents recommended repairs and provides service quotes to you for those repairs. After going through the inspection process and performing any necessary repairs, many dealers will then bill you and schedule in the next appointment based on both hour usage and date cadence. While this process might be slightly different with dealers throughout the Toyota dealer network, maintaining uptime for your forklift is the value of any planned maintenance agreement. At Toyota, we believe in the value of planned maintenance so much that we include four PMs in the first year when you invest in Toyota 360 Support Plus. New forklift investment and proactive maintenance should go hand-in-hand.

FEATURE STORY Free Time with Full Maintenance Signing up your forklift on a full maintenance agreement is like receiving the royal treatment. At the dealership I came from, you not only received everything included in the planned maintenance agreement, but you also had a plethora of other benefits, including: • Maintenance records, tracking, and regular reports. • Pre-paid scheduled and breakdown repairs with the exception of repairs due to misuse, abuse, and wearable items. • Replacement rental equipment for the covered repairs, without charge. • Flat monthly payment with the exception of repairs due to misuse, abuse, and wearable items. With full maintenance, dealerships often take on the burden of overseeing the entire preventive health of your forklift. The true benefit is that the people who work with the equipment daily at the dealership now manage your forklift maintenance. When the dealership is able to work side-by-side with the customer, the dealership personnel is often in the best position to understand when to make repairs and replace parts before it affects your operation.
This adds additional peace of mind when owning a forklift fleet. The monthly rate also helps you budget easier as the cost will not fluctuate from month-to-month. Ideally, you wouldn’t have to pay for every scheduled maintenance interval or the unexpected repairs that come with owning the forklift. Full maintenance monthly rates take into consideration a number of factors, such as equipment type, forklift utilization, age, service history, and the environment in which the forklift is operated. Every service provider may differ in the way that they offer maintenance agreements. Planned maintenance and full maintenance agreements, in general, follow what I outlined above. Define your expectations and take a long, hard look at a proactive maintenance for your forklift fleet. It’s up to you to work with a dealer and tailor the maintenance agreement to meet your needs. PowerMount – A safer way to manage your fleet
Hamilton introduces new casters & wheels for AGV's
Designed and manufactured by B&B Attachments, PowerMount is a unique patented system that enables the truck operator to quickly change from one hydraulic attachment to another in just 90 seconds. The PowerMount system allows for attachment change to be completed without the need for an engineer, guaranteeing a fast, easy and safe way to interchange forklift attachments. It allows one forklift truck to use several different attachments, providing the best possible utilisation of a forklift fleet. Choosing the correct attachment can have several benefits to the working environment, including enhanced control, increased productivity and improved safe working practice. www.bandbattachments.com
Hamilton’s been designing casters and wheels to operate on AGV’s for years now and recent high demand for AGV’s triggered this new standard product offering designed for 24/7 operation. According to Jeff Spektor, Hamilton’s Chief Caster Engineer, “the design for these AGV casters and wheels stems from a compilation of lessons learned from past custom AGV applications. Our customers provided excellent feedback over the years to share the “how’s and why’s” of premature wear of certain components. I’m proud to say that we were able to address each one of them and incorporate the “fixes” into this new bullet-proof AGV Series.” www.hamiltoncaster.com

Founded over 60 years ago, LiuGong has grown to become one of the fastest growing international equipment companies, with more than 13,000 employees, including 1,000 of the world’s top equipment manufacturing engineers. LiuGong is committed to being an exemplary citizen of the global community. Producing over 62,000 units annually from 24 manufacturing facilities worldwide, LiuGong’s lines of North American forklifts, wheel loaders, excavators, skid steer loaders and bulldozers made specifically for the demanding U.S. and Canadian markets benefit from the manufacturer’s expertise in global markets. LiuGong North America equipment designs focus on end-user productivity. 5th Annual Pink Pallet Jack Auction Raises $9,470 Benefitting Breast Cancer Charities Raymond Handling Concepts Corporation (RHCC), a leading materials handling equipment supplier in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest, today announced the winning bids for its fifth annual Pink Pallet Jack Project online auction. A total of $9,470 was raised through two pallet jacks sold to J&K Trucking and Prism Logistics, as
well as a $1k donation from Cascade. All proceeds raised from this year’s auction were shared between the Tina Fund in Greene, New York and HERS Breast Cancer Foundation in Fremont, California. RHCC would like to personally thank John Souza of J&K Trucking, who has continued to support Raymond Handling’s fundraising efforts by placing the winning bid for a lift truck every single year the auction has taken place. Because of his generosity, the annual charity auction has now raised almost $150,000 for breast cancer charities doing amazing things in their communities. “We have really enjoyed participating with Raymond Handling’s annual Pink Pallet Jack Project for breast cancer awareness, and are even more proud that we have won this auction for five consecutive years,” said John Souza, owner at J&K Trucking. “We are grateful for this opportunity to help two very important charities that diligently seek a cure and support women and families affected by breast cancer.” “Raymond Handling has established a legacy with five years of pink pallet jack auctions, because we know how important awareness is in today’s world where far too many people are touched by the sting of breast cancer,” said James Wilcox, president of RHCC. “With this year’s overwhelming support, we are proud of the almost $150,000 we have raised with the Pink Pallet Jack Project and are grateful to our founder, Steve Raymond for his commitment to the cure.” For additional information on the company, please visit www.raymondhandling.com
