Loading Dock Safety Also, remember to always maintain a safe distance from the edge of the loading dock. OSHA doesn’t recommend a specific measurement between a forklift and the edge of a loading dock, but you should implement good judgment to avoid falling off the side of the loading dock. Painting the edges of the loading dock a bright color is one thing you can do to help forklift operators stay aware of dock edges.

By doing the three things above, you’re well on your way to reducing accidents on loading docks, but keep these things in mind too:

Forklift accidents can happen anywhere, but because loading docks are typically narrow and elevated, they’re one place where extra caution should be used. Common loading dock incidents include falling off the edge of the dock, and skidding or slipping due to wet or icy conditions. So how can the risk of loading dock accidents be reduced?

First and foremost, make sure the trailer is secured to the dock using a locking device, either on the trailer’s rear impact guard or rear wheel. One common and dangerous issue that can arise when loading and unloading trailers in a loading dock, is the truck driver not realizing the forklift is still in the truck and pulling away, which causes the forklift to roll out. “Trailer Creep”, which happens when trailers gradually move away from the dock because of constant movement inside them, can also happen. The only way to prevent these two things from happening is to completely secure the trailer with a locking device on the trailer’s rear impact guard or rear wheel.

Clean off the surface of the loading dock. One common cause of accidents involving forklifts and loading docks is ice or water covering the dock. Clean the dock off before operating the forklift on it to help prevent sliding issues.

• Anyone operating a forklift should be trained. Proper operating training is the number-one way to prevent accidents.

• Implementing a daily loading dock inspection is important to the safety of operators and truck drivers alike.

• Keep the product secure on your pallets by covering them in plastic or metal.

• Double check floors of trailers before driving on them to ensure they’re sturdy enough to handle the weight of the forklift.

• Consider creating a dock shelter to keep rain and snow off loading docks, which can cause them to be slippery.

Top Factors to Consider When Laying Out a Warehouse for Automation

With the individualized needs, products and processes of warehouses it is no surprise that each facility requires an equally unique design and solution. A warehouse design that works perfectly for a facility that ships primarily full pallet orders may not be as efficient as one that ships a variety of products in limited quantities.

During the critical step of warehouse design, order analytics help develop the right solution and layout.

Designers and planners analyze the way products are moving today, while looking toward the future, to determine the right amount of automation necessary to gain efficiencies without incurring huge capital cost. The ultimate design should consider the capabilities of both a warehouse execution system (WES) and automation.

Warehouse Layout Manufacturers in every industry are constantly challenged with utilizing warehouse space to its maximum capacity. If you have a large number of pallets of products, it may seem like the most convenient way to store those pallets would be on the floor. However, a floor storage design might require a warehouse with a footprint 10

equal to football fields long, which is not cost effective.

Not to mention, efficiency could decrease dramatically because of the time needed to travel across the warehouse to pick orders. Moreover, many products may not have the sales volume to justify their excess storage space on the floor. Thus, you tend to have a lot of product not within a reasonable area that is readily available for picking, which is where automation can play a greater role.

Organizations that implement an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) within an existing facility typically increases storage capacity by 30 to 50 percent, allowing them to increase throughput and position themselves for future growth, without costly construction. When determining your warehouse’s layout it is important to consider what will be stored in your warehouse. When storing inventory in the fresh and frozen food industry, every square foot of the warehouse counts.

Warehouse System Design Aging of products is a huge concern for companies, especially in the food industry, that deal with perishable goods. Moreover, consumer packaged goods manufacturers prefer not to ship newer products to retailers before they clear older stock off store shelves.

To make better use of resources, these manufacturers can use an AS/RS with a WES. When combined, these systems have the ability to increase inventory visibility and control by providing real-time data that allows manufactures to increase overall operational efficiency, and plan better for future production and planning.

In addition, a WES offers a variety of options for optimal inventory replacement. For instance, the system can initiate replenishment on faster-moving products when space becomes available for a pallet on the rack. For slower moving products, users can set up an algorithm where the system does not trigger replenishment until a future order contains that product.

TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Creating A Wellness Culture

Whatever the endeavor, goals are crucial to achievement.

This holds true in all areas including workplace wellness and culture. Hoping for things to change without direction or effort is merely wishful thinking.

Over the past few years, TVH has received numerous awards for Workplace Wellness including Healthiest Employer Platinum Level Wellness Workplace Certifications and Fit-Friendly Worksite. Twelve of the most active Nudge Program participants were invited to one of the awards breakfast ceremonies as Els Themote, CEO wanted to give back and recognize the employees who are great Ambassadors for our company Nudge program.

As our Nudge Program continues to be recognized with awards, it allows the community and other companies to be inspired to do more for their employee’s health and well-being. The simple fact is a successful workplace wellness program impacts the employees as well as family members, friends and beyond. The best way to improve healthcare is by enhancing the quality of life of individuals; as participation rates increase, the wellness culture shift has made a transformation in the workplace.

My focus as the Health and Wellness Coach of TVH Americas is on encouraging personal growth, not perfection. Perfection is a myth and is not sustainable.

Personal growth is where the rubber meets the road and change happens. If you want things to change and improve in regards to workplace wellness, you must put steps in place to achieve goals and connect with employees with genuine concern.

Getting involved with the employees with a “Let’s Do This Together” attitude can make all the difference. Include 16

the fun factor and recognize involvement with “high fives” and take photos which can be posted and put into a video of the event. In the process, you will see the comradery build.

It only takes a spark to start a fire, so ignite some sparks within your company by offering fun challenges. At TVH, our most recent one-day challenge was the “High Knee Challenge.” Employees joined together and got a couple minutes of cardio with this fun challenge.

Cultivate the culture you want at your workplace and in your life. Good health is a gift you give yourself by the daily choices you make. If your company currently doesn’t have a Wellness Program, consider being the Wellness Ambassador to help create a Wellness Culture.

North America’s Largest Automation Show Announces Move to Accommodate Rapid Growth

Automate, North America’s largest showcase devoted to automation industry trends, leading-edge technology and business innovation, is moving to Detroit. The biennial Automate Show and Conference, co-located with Promat in Chicago since 2011, has grown to more than 500 exhibitors, over 20,000 attendees and 1,000 paid conference registrants. The move for the next event, which will take place May 17-20, 2021 at Cobo Center, was announced at the Automate 2019 “Moving to Motown” networking party in Chicago.

“To continue our rapid growth, and better meet the needs of our exhibitors who look to Automate to reach new potential customers, we’ve decided that now is the right time to move Automate to its own location – and Detroit is an ideal fit,” said Jeff Burnstein, president of the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), the show’s organizer. “Detroit is turning into the next major technology hub in the United States. This is an exciting change for us and our exhibitors, allowing Automate to expand in size and technology scope as the automation industry continues its steady growth.”

Named one of Lonely Planet’s top cities to visit in 2018, Detroit is transforming. Over the last few years, studies from the Brookings Institution have rated Detroit No. 4 on a list of the country’s hubs for advanced technology employment, with nearly 15 percent of the workforce in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area working in areas such as research and development and engineering. Though known as a traditional automotive hub, the region is growing in other industries such as aerospace, logistics and advanced mobility.

Hyster-Yale Group to Collaborate with RICO on Explosion Proof Lift Trucks Industries such as aerospace, automotive, chemical, petroleum, construction, food, pharmaceuticals and plastics often have designated operating areas where lift trucks may be exposed to explosive gases and combustible dust particles. It is critical for certified Explosion Proof (EX) trucks to be utilized in these areas.

New Resource Shows Equipment Distributors How to Grow Their Business with Propane Forklifts The Propane Education & Research Council released a new educational resource for equipment dealers and distributors that outlines simple ways to grow their business with propane-powered forklifts.
