SAFETY CORNER

10 Simple Tips for Safe Forklift Operation Keep employees safe and business moving forward by reinforcing forklift safety procedures By Jeremy Wishart For employees throughout the material handling industry, safety is paramount. Working with and around heavy machinery on the job, employees in the industry are face-to-face with potential hazards on a daily basis. In order to keep employees safe, and ultimately, keep material moving, it’s critical that forklift operators comply with safety procedures. Here are 10 simple tips to help ensure safe forklift operation: 1. Inspect and maintain the forklift before use. Operators should complete a routine check of the equipment before driving them. Notify management with any damages or problems. For facilities using propane forklifts, the propane supplier will inspect cylinders each time they’re exchanged and remove any damaged cylinders from service. Cylinders that show signs of wear or leaks shouldn’t be used and may need to be replaced, even if within the cylinder’s requalification date. 2. Buckle up. It’s important for operators to buckle up while in a sit-down forklift, as overturned forklifts are a leading cause of forklift-related accidents and fatalities. Buckling up can save operators from getting crushed by a machine’s overhead guard or roll cage. 3. Wear appropriate personal protective clothing. When working around forklifts, hard hats, protective footwear, and high-visibility clothing are recommended. 4. Stop the forklift before raising or lowering forks. Ensuring the forklift is stopped before moving forks can greatly reduce the risk of tipping the machine or dropping the load. 5. Keep loads within the weight capacity of the forklift. By exceeding a forklift’s weight capacity, employees can greatly increase the risk of tipping the machine by unbalancing the forklift’s center of gravity. 6. Slow down and sound the horn in situations where vision is obstructed. Operators should also use 8

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

caution on grades or ramps. Operators should use the horn to alert pedestrians or other forklift operators of their location to avoid unnecessary collision. Take corners and turns slowly to minimize the risk of tipping. Changes in direction or any stops should be made gradually and slowly, too. 7. Ensure the pressure relief valve on the propane cylinder is secure and point away from locating pin. Check that the pressure relief valve fitting is roughly 180 degrees from the forklift’s locating pin. 8. Set parking brake, lower forks, and set controls to neutral when finished. By safely parking the machine, employees reduce the risk of unintended movement when a forklift is left unattended. If parked on an incline, employees can further secure the machine with wheel blocks. 9. Propane cylinders should be stored in a secure cage or rack. Propane forklift cylinders can be stored horizontally with the pressure relief valves in the uppermost position, and operators should use proper lifting techniques when removing them from storage and placing onto the machine. The facility’s propane supplier can help determine the best location for the cylinder storage rack or cage, which is generally located away from exits, stairways, entryways, and high-traffic areas. 10. When not in use, close service valves on propane cylinders. By doing so, operators help prevent unintended fuel loss, and potential injury around internal combustion engines. By following the proper forklift safety procedures while behind the wheel, operators can protect themselves and coworkers, prevent time-loss accidents, and keep business moving forward. Ninety percent of Class 4 and 5 operators are using forklifts powered by propane for a variety of reasons, according to data from the Propane Education & Research Council. For the many facilities already using propane-powered forklifts specifically, they have the benefit of a safety resource already at their fingertips — their local propane supplier. Find out more about the benefits of propane-powered forklifts, and forklift safety at Propane.com/SafetyFirst. Jeremy Wishart is director of off-road business development for the Propane Education & Research Council. He can be reached at jeremy. wishart@propane.com.

Safety is a constant work in progress While Lockout/Tagout has come far from the early industrial days of the late 1800s, it still remains a challenge in workplace safety. In 2013 OSHA focused specifically on LO/TO by adding an Amputations National Emphasis Program, which targets compliance with LO/TO and machine guarding standards. "Failing to protect workers from dangerous machinery is among the most frequently cited OSHA violations, and injuries involving machinery and equipment often result in death or permanent disability," said Howard Eberts, OSHA's area director in Cleveland. "Employers who are cited for repeat violations demonstrate a lack of commitment to employee safety and health.” Year after year citations for LO/TO failure continue to make the top 10 list of OSHA violations. Ranking at No. 5, LO/TO citations increased in 2018 by 2 percent, with 2,944 violations. The essence of lockout/ tagout (LO/TO) is turning off equipment, disconnecting its power supply, and locking the power supply in its disconnected state until maintenance work is done.

However, this only scratches the surface; making lockout/ tagout work involves creating a lockout/tagout program for your facility. LO/TO can be a difficult procedure especially when a job or facility has large manufacturing equipment. Workplaces and workers can prevent life-altering accidents with LO/TO products. This infographic provides an excellent visual example of the standard. Visit www.GraphicProducts.com or call 800-788-5572.

FEATURE STORY

Safety matters: the ergonomic benefits of automation Most conventional warehouses require workers to manually lift, carry and lower often-heavy containers of goods. The repetitive twisting, turning and reaching actions put warehouse staff at constant risk of injury, as well as potential long-term damages from years of prolonged physical stress. Such continued strain on muscles, tendons, joints and nerves can lead to chronic conditions, including Repetitive Stress Injuries, Repetitive Motion Injuries, Musculoskeletal Disorders, Cumulative Trauma Disorders and Cumulative Trauma Injuries. While warehouse managers can take precaution by training workers on proper lifting techniques and posture, instruction cannot fully eliminate the impact of physical labor on the human body. The International Labour Organization reports that an estimated 340 million occupational accidents happen around the world each year, with an additional 160 million workers experiencing work-related illnesses. Additionally, studies show that the number of injury cases in warehousing continues to be significantly higher than other industries. With ergonomics in mind, many industrialized nations have implemented initiatives designed to protect workers from injury. For example, the United States has legislation dating back to 1970 with the Occupational Safety and Health Act. The European Union created the Directive 90/269/EEC in 1990, which details the minimum health and safety requirements for the manual handling of loads. In 2011, Canada set forth health and safety regulations that encourage the use of mechanical aids whenever possible for ergonomics. Creating more ergonomic-friendly workplaces is one important reason for warehouses to look to automation. From conveyers and automated guided vehicles (AGVs), to automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) and order picking solutions, such robotics and machinery can alleviate staff from the demanding task of order fulfillment. Facilities can limit human intervention to supervising operations, releasing orders, selecting picking sequences, transport planning, or stepping in for products with special handling instructions.

Minimize employee risks of injury, protecting longterm health The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the rate of work-related injury and illness in the warehouse and storage industries affect over five percent of the workforce. Nearly four percent of these recordable cases lead to absences from work—a rate higher than the median absentee rate of 2.8 cases per 100. In an industry already struggling with available labor, workforce absences due to injury only puts further strain on healthy workers to pick up the slack—putting those workers at greater risk for injuries as well. Automated warehousing systems can minimize the amount of required labor in the warehouse, allowing facilities to overcome challenges due to shortages in available staff. With technology taking over the majority of materials handling, companies can counter absenteeism and proactively eliminate the risks of injury by protecting workers’ safety and long-term health. Promote a culture of safety, enhancing job satisfaction An ergonomic-friendly workplace helps to set the tone for a company’s commitment to safety, where prevention of all injuries is the goal. A positive safety culture—where the majority of workers buy into the shared commitment towards safety—has a positive influence on morale and turns workers into dependable and proactive safety advocates. Positive morale and job satisfaction directly impact employee performance and retention, saving companies from the need to replace staff in limited labor pools. Additionally, workers who are less fatigued, and not experiencing pain or discomfort, are more productive—and satisfied. Increase overall efficiency and accuracy In addition to ergonomic improvements, automation can help warehouses increase operational efficiency and productivity. With the right equipment, wasted motions are eliminated, maximizing material flow and efficiency. Facilities can better keep up with increased product demand and order numbers during peak periods. With less human intervention, order accuracy also increases. In fact, by automating order picking in its headquarters’ warehouse, bread and roll manufacturer Martin’s Famous Pastry Shoppe, Inc.® was able to eliminate the inherent

safety risks in manual fulfillment while reducing its man hours by 30 percent. Reduce operational costs Healthy, satisfied workers and a well-optimized, efficient warehouse translates to tangible, business benefits. After all, there are inherent costs associated with hiring and training employees. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) reports that companies can spend six to nine months of a single employee’s salary just on recruiting and training a replacement. With less risks for on-the-job injuries, automated warehouses can find additional savings through reduced costs in worker’s compensation, liabilities, and potential litigation. In today’s high-demand world, safe product handling is essential for success. Automated solutions, including order picking systems, conveyers, AGVs and AS/RS, can not only eliminate ergonomic hazards for workers, but also improve efficiency in distribution. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, but there are numerous options available today. Conducting a risk assessment to identify current dangers to employees—and how automation can help—is a good place to start. By Miia Vironen, Director, Corporate QHSE, Cimcorp (www.cimcorp. com)

Avoid Accidents with Essential Safety Products There is a growing awareness that safety isn’t just about protecting the operators using the machines, but the employees working around them as well. In fact, almost 40% of reported accidents are pedestrian related, many of which can be avoided with the proper safety products. However, no one product is enough to fulfill all of your safety needs. Use multiple products in order to create a complete safety system to protect not only your machines, but those working around them as well. Personnel must constantly be aware of their surroundings and the machines working in the area. One major obstacle when working in a warehouse environment is the noise level. More often than not, workers can’t hear a machine approach. This problem can be alleviated by installing pedestrian sensors at all major intersections in the warehouse. These sensors will alert pedestrians that a machine is approaching, even if they can’t see or hear it. Remanufactured Transmissions, Engines, Torque Converters, Steer Axles, Overhaul Kits and Aftermarket Parts for: • Material Handling • Construction • Agricultural Equipment

Another great option is making your machine more visible. Consider combining a variety of safety lighting options to create a complete safety zone around your equipment. Incorporate lights such as LED dual color strobes, bright work lights and red or blue warning lights that shine down on the floor in front or behind the machine. These lighting options can easily alert pedestrians that work is going on in the area, regardless of noise level and when used together will increase safety, not only for pedestrians but for operators as well. In addition to warning lights, all forklifts and industrial equipment should be equipped with quality back-up alarms. To be most effective, a back-up alarm needs to be around 10 decibels above the ambient noise of its surroundings. Since noise levels can vary depending on the time of day or activity level, it can be difficult to select the right back-up alarm to fit your needs. One great solution is to install a self-adjusting alarm. Self-Adjusting back-up alarms listen to the ambient noise level of the surrounding area by using a built-in microphone and automatically adjust its sound output to be louder than the surrounding noise. Nothing is more important than the safety of your work force. TVH is committed to being your one-stop-shop for all of your safety parts and accessories and offers a wide variety of lighting and back-up alarm options to fit your needs. www.tvh.com

BUSINESS PROFILE

Clear Cap celebrates 20th Anniversary

Example of TuffCab panel system

Example of ClearCap

ClearCap is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. Wy’East Products company founder, Steve Puls, says “it is hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since the introduction ClearCap engineered forklift roof covers”. In the late 1990’s Puls observed issues at his employer’s operation. “We were using shrink-wrap, cardboard and plywood to protect the forklift operators. It made our operation look like a dumpster, so I bought some flexible vinyl covers but they came off in a few days because the water pooled in the low spots and rushed forward when they hit the brakes”. Puls then drew on his experience in the molded plastics industry to find an affordable solution to what appeared to be a common industry problem. “I knew we could do better” he stated. The ClearCap design is simple yet very effective. UV resistant polycarbonate is molded into a cover which has a low-profile dome in the viewing area along with ribs and gutters. This keeps water from pooling and blurring the operator’s vision and eliminates cascading water during maneuvers. The basic concept is to keep the operator dry and comfortable while providing outstanding visibility and safety. ClearCaps are tough, rigid and extremely clear using the same material as riot shields. The product is also offered in a light tint for those working outside in bright sunlight. Both clear and tinted versions block 100% of harmful UV rays. The units mount simply with cam lock buckles and nylon straps. There is no drilling or tapping required and installation takes only seconds. “Looking back, I was very naïve. I thought one or two models would cover all the 16

lift trucks” Puls stated. “We are well over 40 models and counting, that’s a lot of tooling”. “In addition, we now offer the TuffCab Panels systems for companies that need windshields and more complete cab enclosures for their operators”. TuffCab systems are steel framed and safety glass panels that quickly and securely clamp to the overhead guard without any modifications to the factory guard. A windshield with wiper, roof panel and rear window panel plus high-grade marine vinyl curtains that use a unique attachment design create a full cab enclosure at an affordable price. Complete sets or individual components are in stock for most of the common models of Hyster, Yale, Toyota, Cat, Mitsubishi and Unicarrier. When asked if he had any advice after 20 years, Puls commented, “I wish I had started earlier because growing a business takes time and continuous effort. We are an overnight success that only took 20 years and counting. I think the most important thing is listen to your customers, accept responsibility for your mistakes, say thank you and mean it”. INDUSTRY NEWS

ARA forecast continues to project steady growth The new five-year forecast from the American Rental Association (ARA) updated on May 2 calls for equipment and event rental revenues in North America to surpass $61.3 billion in 2019, including $55.8 billion in the United States and $5.3 billion in Canada, up 5.0 percent compared to 2018. Similar steady growth is expected in each of the successive years of the forecast to reach $69.8 billion in revenue by 2022. The current figures, which are updated quarterly, project slightly less growth than what was forecast in February, but continues to forecast similar steady growth, outpacing the overall economy. “The equipment and event rental industry is growing and continues to expand faster than the overall economy. The outlook continues to be positive,” says John McClelland, Ph.D., ARA vice president for government affairs and chief economist. In the U.S., equipment and event rental revenue is expected to grow another 4.2 percent in 2020, 4.3 percent in 2021 and 4.7 percent in 2022 to reach $63.5 billion. Scott Hazelton, managing director, IHS Markit, the forecasting firm that compiles data and analysis for the ARA Rentalytics subscription service as part of a partnership with ARA, says the trend for the equipment and event rental industry is slightly slower growth than previously forecast, but that growth is steady. “The outlook for the equipment rental industry calls for expected growth, although at reduced rates. The maturing economy, combined with trade issues, offers more limited opportunities to the construction and manufacturing sectors, while the stimulus from tax cuts to both consumers and business is fading,” Hazelton says. “Even so, we expect moderate growth of more than 5 percent in 2019, and 4 percent in 2020 and 2021. In the United States, not one state has a decline in construction, general tool or party and event rental revenue and there are no signs of recession. However, weakness in core markets suggest that any forecast risk is on the downside and our forecast has evolved lower over the past six months,” he says. “There also is potential upside from an infrastructure bill. The exact gain to rental would depend upon the size,

time span and composition — such as transportation vs. technology infrastructure — of the bill, but something on the scale proposed by the President and Congressional leaders last week has to potential to boost equipment rental revenue by up to 10 percent from its baseline,” he says. In Canada, rental revenue is forecast to grow 2.5 percent in 2019 to total nearly C$5.6 billion and then continues to expand with revenue increases of 4.4 percent in 2020, 5.6 percent in 2021 and 3.7 percent in 2022 to total more than C$6.3 billion. McCue Enhanced Crash Barrier works as a system to flex and absorb shock

McCue Crash Barrier just got stronger— but you’d never know it from looking at its smooth, flawless yellow veneer. Beneath that flexible polymer exterior is an integrated system of industrial rubber shock absorbers, high-strength aircraft-grade cabling that allows the guard rail to absorb and rebound from massive direct hits. We custom-engineered every component from the inside out to make it perform like nothing else out there—taking an innovative approach with a dual-layer of protection the polymer rails absorb impacts and normal wear and tear and the internal shock absorbers and patent-pending cabling system stops runaway vehicles in their tracks. www.mccue.com

Dock-Lift Safety Gate

Dock-Lift safety gates are designed to create a safe environment for employees moving material to and from loading docks. The safety gate secures ledges of loading dock lifts, pit-mounted dock lifts and scissor lifts, providing fall protection for employees riding the lifts. The Dock-Lift safety gate is a self-closing gate that automatically opens when the loading dock lift is on ground level so material can be transferred on and off the lift. As the lift elevates to align with the tractor trailer, the gates automatically close and lock in place to form a fall protection barrier for employees on the lift, keeping them safe as they move palletized material out of the truck.

Damo Base Guard

The DAMO BASE GUARD protects the bottom portion of your pallet racking columns from forklift damage. It is unique in that it effectively protects the lower part of your upright while maintaining the ability to install beams close to floor level. Most pallet post guards will prevent beam installation at floor level because the guards cover the front column’s holes where beam connectors are generally attached. The DAMO BASE GUARD is designed to be independent of the columns and does not touch the front of the column. It’s solidly anchored to the floor with screw type anchors and is not attached to the racking system. www.damotech.com

Award-winning pedestrian-forklift safety system

ELOshield is an automated anticollision system for forklifts and floor workers. It automatically alerts forklift drivers and pedestrians if they get too close. The system has two safety zones—“warning” and “protection”—which can trigger different system reactions (like automatic vehicle slow-down). The range and shape of each zone can be flexibly programmed. As a failsafe, ELOshield sends multiple warnings—by sight (LED lights), sound (acoustic alarm) and feel (vibration alarm). ELOshield has won many industry accolades, including a top Innovation Award from the Material Handling Institute. The system is made by ELOKON, a global leader in industrial safety technology. www.elokon.com

INDUSTRY NEWS

MCFA Introduces New Jungheinrich Forklift Truck Series

Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America Inc. (MCFA), the provider of Jungheinrich® lift trucks and narrowaisle products in the United States, Canada and Mexico, today introduced the new 4,500 – 6,500 lb. capacity Jungheinrich EFG C23-C30L sit-down electric counterbalanced lift trucks to its North American product line. Offering exceptional runtimes, the new Jungheinrich electric counterbalanced series can operate up to two shifts on one battery charge in most applications, allowing customers to achieve more in a given work day. “We’re proud to introduce the new Jungheinrich EFG electric counterbalanced lift truck series to the North American market,” said Antonio Serrano, product marketing manager at MCFA. “Our Jungheinrich EFG series helps set a new standard for operation – from superior design and ergonomics to longer run times – making it an ideal solution for hardworking warehouse environments.” Key features include: Advanced Drive System. Rapid acceleration, smooth directional changes, and precise speed control and handling are just a few of the advantages of the Jungheinrich EFG C23-C30L lift truck series’ AC drive system. Individual performance features such as travel speed, acceleration rate and regenerative braking can all be customized to fit customer’s unique application requirements for added control.

All AC Hydraulic System. The Jungheinrich all AC hydraulic system provides smooth load handling and precise load placements. Hydraulic cushioning is built into the mast staging function to help minimize unnecessary shocks to the truck and to the load. Enhanced Hydrostatic Steering.
