5 Important Safety Tips for Operating Forklifts on Rough Terrain Driving a forklift on rough terrain is not an easy task. In fact, if the operator doesn’t know what he’s doing, it can result in a serious accident. Before the operators drive on rough terrains, discuss the different hazards they may face and the right safety habits they must follow.

1. Maintain Cleanliness Driving forklifts on rough terrains will cause a buildup of dirt.

This will lead to an inefficient performance of the machine. It may even become a safety hazard.

For instance, if there is mud stuck around the tires, the forklift’s grip on the ground may be compromised and lead to an accident.

Clean the forklift regularly from top to bottom. Use a pressure washer to get rid of the dirt instantly. You can also use specialized soaps and detergents to clean the forklift. Make sure you use protective clothing and goggles if you handle hazardous cleaning materials.

2. Never Overload the Forklift The load that the forklift carries also determines its safety. If the forklift is overloaded, it can tip to the side or over a steep corner or edge. An overloaded machine may be pushed to the side when you are driving it forward, which can be quite hazardous. Use a heavy-duty industrial scale to check the load to make sure it doesn’t exceed the weight.

It is also important to load and unload the forklift properly. When it is not done carefully, the person doing the task may get hurt.

A rough terrain forklift is usually set up to deal with a number of weights and loads. However, it is the operator who must focus on keeping the machine and everyone around it safe.

4. Do Regular Inspection Checks The operators must inspect the forklift before each job. They must check if the seatbelts and tires are in good condition.

Next comes the horn, brakes, backup alarms and lights. The fluid levels, and the moving and load supporting parts of the forklift must be checked next. By making sure that everything is in proper condition, you can ensure a safe job without the risk of an accident.

The forklift must also be inspected regularly even if it is not in use.

Regular inspection and maintenance make sure that the forklift runs smoothly whenever it is operated.

5. Be Aware of Fuel and Fire Safety Rough terrain forklifts are generally powdered by internal combustion engines which require refueling. You must be aware of the hazards that are associated with the fuel, regardless of whether it is gasoline, diesel, or propane. No matter what the fuel type is, a fire extinguisher must always be readily available when refueling the forklift.

Final Words Operators who are careless or don’t have proper training increase the risk of an accident that may result in serious injury or even death.

Make training programs that combine lectures, written instructions, and tests along with hands-on training. This will ensure safe operations on the site.

3. Be Cautious While Driving You need to first check if the forklift is safe to drive or not. Check the terrain on which you have to operate the forklift.

If you misjudge the terrain, it can lead to serious accidents. When you drive it on rough terrains, you need to be absolutely sure that the forklift can handle anything. You have to be attentive while driving so that you can identify potentials hazards or respond to them correctly when they occur.

Always have seatbelts on and drive the forklift at safe speeds. You must also consider factors like load stability, surface conditions, machinery operating nearby or people present in the area.

Contagious Wellness If attitudes are contagious, is yours worth catching?

We all have been influenced at one time or another by those around us and it’s important to realize that we are influencing others including our loved ones, co-workers and even strangers. The question we need to be asking ourselves is, “If attitudes and actions are contagious, is mine worth catching”?

How to Train Employees to Use Equipment on Rough Terrain While it’s true that most heavy machinery and industrial equipment comes with safe operating modes — some even designed for rough terrain — that doesn’t negate the danger of working in extreme conditions. Depending on the project, the environment can pose its series of challenges, especially when the surrounding land is hazardous.

Therefore, it’s necessary to ensure equipment operators understand and know how to deal with varying conditions, beyond just how to use the equipment. It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking about forklifts, telehandlers, cranes or any other industrial-grade machine, knowing how to handle them under extreme conditions is vital for productivity and safety.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, transportation incidents were responsible for 2,077 deaths in 2017. It’s a prescient issue, especially in the construction and development field.

In light of that, here are some actionable training tips that will aid in preparing your workforce for rough terrain.

1. Practice Makes Perfect Find a suitable training area and make it a requirement that all equipment operators spend time driving or working in varying conditions. It shouldn’t just be new hires and relatively inexperienced drivers that train — it should be everyone. As the adage goes, practice makes perfect. When operators have direct experience working in shifty or rough terrain, they know what to expect when on a job.

It’s not difficult to create a training ground that incorporates several terrain types and conditions, either.

Dirt, mud, rock, boggy conditions and many others can be simulated in a small area. You can also make use of the weather, scheduling training sessions when it’s raining or foggy to help workers build their experience.

2. Require Performance and Safety Checks Before operation, workers should always inspect the equipment for performance issues as well as relevant safety concerns. If a particular machine is malfunctioning, that may pose new risks to the operator and nearby workers.

Some machines include operational safety gear such as visors or splash guards, or malfunction-related triggers. These safety measures should always be in working order. When they’re not functioning properly, no one should use the machine. This may seem like an obvious tip, but many workers and managers will continue to use equipment just to cut down on operational delays or schedule issues. What they don’t realize is they’re creating an inordinate and unnecessary amount of risk in doing so.

3. Everyone Should Know Safety Standards Every piece of equipment, from a forklift to a tractor, has a set of safety standards associated with it. Part of the training needed to use industrial machinery involves brushing up and memorizing these standards to ensure optimal safety for all involved. However, it should never be assumed that workers know their ins and outs.

level of familiarity all workers have. If they are found lacking, they must be put through their paces and given a proper education or study session on such content.

Standards familiarity is something that should be regularly assessed. It’s more of an ongoing or continuous involvement than a one-time deal. Workers should continue to learn and stay current on their standards knowledge.

4. Tracks vs. Wheels Construction and industrial-grade equipment employ either wheel- or track-based movement systems. In some conditions, it doesn’t matter which form of mobility is used. Under these conditions, wheels and tracks are about equal in terms of usability and operation.

However, when you start moving into rough terrain or soft, slippier ground coverings, that’s when track-based mobility solutions are superior. This is because the track has much more traction due to its surface area, and this is good when you’re talking about bulky machinery or vehicles with heavy loads. It helps prevent the equipment from getting stuck or incurring damage.

From a safety standpoint, it’s important to understand which mobility type is best for the project’s terrain. It may be necessary to choose a piece of machinery with track-based mobility over wheels.

5. Know the Limits With heavy machinery that’s used to lift, stow or transport goods and materials, there’s a weight limit to be mindful of. Most of this information is presented in something called a load chart, but it’s not always a simple limit to consider. For example, a 10,000-pound rated forklift cannot always carry the full load its been rated at. When the boom is extended, that machine cannot safely handle the full 10,000 pounds. If the operator were to push that limit, the consequences could be disastrous.

It’s incredibly important that equipment operators understand the limits of their machinery as well as the additional requirements for those ratings. If an extended crane can only handle half the weight of its full limit, the restriction must be adhered to.

3 Hidden Costs of Batteries for Forklifts Common costs facility managers overlook when purchasing material handling equipment The difference between an inefficient work environment and a smooth-running operation can boil down to choosing the right forklift. And a central element of selecting the right material handling equipment involves fuel choice.

Many material handling professionals — 70 percent of fleet managers operating forklifts in the 5,000- 10,000 lbs. capacity range and 51 percent of fleet managers operating forklifts in the 10,000 lbs. and up capacities — are choosing propane. Propane forklift users trust the equipment for its versatility, increased productivity, and low emissions profile, to name a few.

Other facilities prefer electric equipment to handle their material handling needs, and while electric forklifts can offer advantages for their operations there are a few costs considerations that oftentimes get overlooked.

Here are three cost categories for facility managers to take into consideration when purchasing their next forklift to prevent buyer’s remorse: 1. Total cost of ownership According to a survey from the Propane Education Research Council, fleet managers rated initial capital cost as one of the top five important factors when purchasing a forklift. Electric forklifts, compared with propane-powered forklifts, have a higher capital cost.

In fact, the capital cost of an electric forklift can be 30 percent higher than the purchase price of a propane-powered forklift when factoring in the purchase of required batteries and recharging equipment.

Plus, electric forklifts are costly when you consider the utility costs of keeping them charged. Battery life and power output for electric forklifts also diminish over time and lead to future costs that can go overlooked, including additional expensive batteries. Charging electric forklift batteries when the remaining charge is too high or too low can reduce the lifespan of the battery by half.

With propane, beyond the initial equipment purchase and the cost of fuel, facilities are only responsible for maintenance and storing the cylinders, which they lease from their propane supplier. Facility managers may also be able to lock in a fuel price with their local propane supplier, providing even more peace of mind.

Propane forklifts’ longer lifespan also leads to cost savings. The life expectancy of a propane cylinder is three times longer than the life expectancy of an electric forklift battery and extends beyond the typical lifespan of a forklift. Plus, propane-powered forklifts can be refilled at any time without affecting the lifespan of the cylinder.

Propane beats out electric in terms of productivity costs, too.

Electric forklifts can require hours of recharging and if an employee forgets to plug the equipment in overnight, it means accelerated loss of power throughout the workday and a halt in productivity. Not to mention, heavy loads drain the battery more quickly resulting in the need for frequent recharging and adherence to strict battery management.

Propane forklifts, on the other hand, maintain 100 percent power throughout operation, pushing heavy loads at full capacity more consistently than their electric counterparts. Plus, one propane cylinder typically lasts an entire eight-hour shift, giving a facility uninterrupted operational capability.

This is great news for facilities that run operations 24/7, as propane can enable them to work around the clock.

2. Environmental costs It’s important to consider the environmental costs of a facility’s equipment, too. One of the most common misconceptions that facility managers make is choosing electric forklifts for the purpose of operating zero emission material handling equipment.

Electric forklifts may produce zero emissions during normal operation, but their emissions profile is less impressive when you take the total site-to-source emissions into account. Site-to-source emissions include those produced in the manufacturing and transportation of any energy source, including batteries for electric equipment. Electric forklifts produce 76 percent more sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, compared with propane equipment. It’s also important to consider how electricity is produced. In many parts of the country, electricity production still comes from coal fired power plants.

When you factor the emissions profile of a coal fired power plant with the transmission and distribution losses of electric, the full scale of environmental impact is quite staggering.

The electric battery disposal process isn’t so squeaky clean either.

When the battery goes dead, facility managers can’t simply dispose of them without negatively impacting the environment. Because the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers them a hazardous material, they have specific handling and disposal regulations attached. In many cases, proper disposal or reconditioning of the battery can be a costly proposition.

3. Initial installation costs Facility managers who make the move to electric oftentimes forget about the installation requirements that come with electric equipment — which can have a significant impact both financially and structurally.

Electric forklifts often require the costly installation of battery charging stations, which must be located in a designated area of the facility. It’s important to note that charging stations may cause issues in some facilities and require costly service upgrades to accommodate the new power requirements. With propane forklifts, however, infrastructure requirements are minimal. Refueling infrastructure requires only storage space for the propane cylinders, freeing up valuable warehouse square footage that would otherwise be occupied by battery stations.

By choosing the right forklift, and fuel, for their operations, facility managers can achieve higher levels of productivity, lower cost of ownership, decreased downtime, and reduced emissions. In other words, purchasing the right forklift can provide a substantial ROI for a business. Facility managers who are well-versed in how choosing the right fuel can impact their equipment and overall operations will set themselves up for success — and ultimately, maximize their investment.

Last month AIT went public with its largest acquisition to date, picking up Unitrans International Corporation, a Los Angeles-based freight forwarder with expertise in a variety of specialized services.

That move followed two deals last year to acquire food logistics forwarder WorldFresh Express and U.K.-based ConneXion World Cargo in October 2018 and December 2018, respectively.

Throughout its history, AIT has sought to not only grow, but also to actively engage with the community, Moore added, noting that AIT and its teammates helped raise more than $620,000 for the American Cancer Society since 2000 and more than $120,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital since 2017.

To commemorate the occasion, teammates at AIT locations around the world shared photos and videos of their anniversary celebrations.
